[Q] SIM unlock for Canadian GSM carrier - Droid 2 Global General

I used to be with Verizon but switched to Sprint 2 months ago. I have a friend who is visiting from Canada and I figured they'd get more use out of this phone since I don't plan on going back to Verizon anytime soon and this phone is quite old. I tried putting their SIM in the phone and the phone asked for an unlock code. I've been doing some research on here but it seems like no one can guarantee a good solution for unlocking.
If I ask Verizon nicely, will they give me the unlock code?
Or do I need to search for a third party? How reliable are those? And there are apparently SIMs I can purchase that will unlock the phone? Which is better?
Honestly, I'd prefer a free option, but I want to make sure when my friend heads back to Canada next week, the phone will work without any further action required.
Thanks for your help.

The only guaranteed ways are either contacting Verizon Global Support (and you must have an active account in good standing with them for at least 6 months) or using a hardware dongle called SigmaKey which is $120.
Online unlocking services are “unreliable” as in, it depends on whether you're lucky enough to have a device with its unlock code unchanged.

very, I have unlocked 4 motorola phones
90% or better of D2G's can be unlocked, the problem is there are 3 different possible unlock codes for every D2G
if the first fails, ask for 2nd...

turbo sims may work fine for calls and texts, but burn out very fast using data.

only free would be Verizon, there have been reports of them making exceptions, and the call would be free.

Is this referring to mobile data only? I.e. wifi is okay to use? My buddy doesn't have a data plan so this could be ideal.
Very thorough response. Thank you for your help!

yes, wifi does not use the sim card

Verizon locked most recent Globals. None of the code work.

If anyone know how to unlock them (well I don't really know how otherwise I wouldn't post this LOL), please send me a PM. Thanks.
Large QTY available and of course will pay.
Option 1 - you have access to Verizon's secret database to get the correct code
Option 2 - you have your own program that can break the lock permanently.
TurboSim is not an option for me.
Sending the phones out to someone to unlock is not an option either.
Buying codes from ebay, from Swiftunlocks, etc... Dude, don't you think I have tried them all already?

sorry, u are not d only one with d problem
it was FALSELY advertised as global phone, so we tot it can be used any where in the word...
It is a global phone. But a Verizon global phone...
To the OP, I would check in GSM unlocking forums, where people lurking there have some serious experience in phone unlocking..
There might be a hardware solution available.

I know this has been probably long been debated but... we bought a MOTOROLA phone with Verizon as our service provider. Why should they choose to lock the phone up if we want to use it abroad? Why should they dictate how we can receive service on OUR MOTOROLA devices? Personally I think if we want to unlock these without an active contract with Verizon that should be our choice, or at the very least Motos.

I know this is an old thread but I thought my input might help others.
I got 2 D2Gs in Jan 2011 and I called Verizon and got both of them unlocked without any issues. I already travelled to 3 different countries and have used 3 different GSM providers. The codes worked perfectly fine.
3G, 2G, H, etc... You name it! They all worked fine.
How about POSTING them in the thread?

You get one code and it will on your phone and no one elses. Also I've heard if you fail to enter a correct code 10 times the phone is locked forever from being global on another gsm provider. You will be locked to verzion period if you leave the country.
This is all i've heard.

My codes are obviously not going to work with your phone, unless what you wanted was for me to post pictures of my D2G working on all those bands. If ever someone wants to go figure how the code matches my IMEI/ESN and what not, I would be happy to PM them all the info.

That's good to know. I was shocked the other week to find out that Verizon has basically removed their global plans from their offerings (they exist for some areas, but $100 for 70MB is a joke). Thus, for an upcoming month-long trip I'll drop $40 on a local GSM data SIM and end up better off. I'm already unlocked so again, thanks for the confirmation.
Any travel to Europe and Asia is going to cost you a fortune for roaming. I used to use Verizon's global data all the time, but lately, I had to get the Droid 2 Global just to keep Verizon phone, my love for Android and not break bank by using local sim cards for data and calls.

I have a motorola drois 2 Global.
Can you help mt to unlock it?
So I may have gotten lucky but this is my input on my droid 2 global sim unlocking.
When I received the phone pretty much the first thing I did was root it to install Fission de-blurred rom. Ok? Good.
You would have to go to defuze's website to get all the details on installing their Roms (its not hard). But after installing the rom along with the droid 2 global fix it simply... worked. Kid you not.
I called a Verizon rep I had worked with before to unlock it and we were confused as to why when putting in a different sim card it did not ask for a unlock code. Even stranger under security sim settings the only option available was to re-lock.
Hell I gave it a shot in popped in a t-mobile sim I had from my touch pro 2 unlocked and called from my droid 2 global and what do you know, worked flawlessly.
My best guess is the droid 2 global fix that automatically installs when installing the rom.
I have not had the opportunity to test abroad yet though I don't have plans to travel until maybe this summer money permitted.
**edit
This doesn't actually worked I checked again and the number which makes the call is my verizon number not the tmobile number of the sim card inside. So now to figure out how to unlock my droid 2 global.

well i have the Fission ROM running on my D2G and it still asks for a network unlock code whenever i put my simcard in.
Not a lot of ROMs for the D2G. Unless you use ports of D2. Seems like codes work for some and don't work for others. I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with what ROM you're using.

Yeah I agree fully it seems weird but like I said it just worked. I may have gotten lucky with a already unlocked phone which was the Verizon rep's input on it. I was putting it out there in case someone had not tried this yet.

But I have heard about the page in Poland, where they will send you a message in two days with a number to unlock your Motorola for 23Euro. Will at&t one x work on tmobile if unlocked?

Just wondering if I decide to use a tmobile prepaid sim in it.
UPDATE for the lazy folks:
Yes, this can be sim-unlocked
Currently, this is the only unlocker who is able to: http://unlockphonenetwork.com/unlock/3
Turnaround time is 12-24 hours.
No, this phone does not have 3g on T-Mobile, only 2g EDGE speeds are possible.

Weren't you anti the 1x just yesterday?
2G uses the same basic GSM frequencies as phone calls, I think. If you can make a call, you can get 2G. Really slow 2G...
Just as an update, I have two pending unlock requests for the HTC one X from different companies (got a good deal so the two were only $15 combined).
The first one I tried failed and they refunded my money. Hopefully someone can unlock this device.
Any update on this ?

Not necessarily true.. if you use a newer tmobile sim card you will only be able to make calls and text, there is no Edge unless you use an older sim card.

All as an update, still no word on my two pending unlocks. The company I tried but refunded me was Cellunlocker.net
The two places I have a pending unlock with are cellunlock.net and UnlockMagic.com Update FAILED
Pending some word from them I will gladly try other services, but I can't afford to pay everyone to unlock my phone

Since there is more action in this thread than my thread with the same question, I'll post here. Thanks for trying those that their phones already. I'll try some of the other services not yet tested once I get mine.
I'm starting to think I've purchased an iPhone now. Lock bootloader, no carrier sim unlock. Google Voice not working fully.
i'm waiting aswell, my bro and i will be spending 1100$ for 2 devices, so we dont wanna be stuck with devices that cant make calls (

Even when I purchased my iPhone at full price it came sim unlocked on AT&T. The One X on the other hand.....
Well, UnlockMagic.com just failed and gave me a refund.
I went ahead and purchased an unlock from http://unlockphonenetwork.com and in record time they refunded my money. They claim there is a method (http://unlockphonenetwork.com/products-page/htc-unlock-codes/htc-unlock-code-not-found?cid=25) but its $30 and will take 12-24 hours.
In the interest of science, and of course getting my phone unlocked I am taking the plunge now.
my bro is currently in the US, he'll be leaving on the 11th, so i don't think i've got much time :S
Sorry for the crazy amount of posts, but those subscribed may not have seen all my updates (and they were plentiful).
The quick summary:
cellunlocker.net - failed
unlockmagic.com - failed
first attempt at phoneunlocknetwork.com - failed
cellunlock.net - pending
htccode.com - wouldn't let me proceed after sharing my IMEI
QUESTION - if they manage to unlock the BL, will that also allow us to make it SIM-free ?

unlock for t-mobile?

is it possible to get the at&t mini and unlock it for t-mobile? wasn't sure if it takes awhile for the mini to be unlockable and are the carriers compatible with one another? from what I understand both work off of gsm but will I have issues with t-mobiles 4g/etc...
I just got my at&t one mini unlocked today and can receive/send voice and text without issue using a T-Mobile USA sim card. However, I don't yet have any data connection. I was told it could take up to 24 hours so I'll report back tomorrow.
Hooray for me! Just called T-Mobile tech support and they walked me through manually configuring the APN and now I've got voice, text, and freakin' LTE! I was told this phone wouldn't work with our LTE, but it looks like they were WRONG! HTC One mini on T-Mobile USA FTW!

My apologies if this question is foolish, but AT&T says they can't unlock my htc one mini for me, even though I paid for it in full, says there is no unlock code for it. Talk to tech support and everything, and they still deny there is a code available.
So I try ebay and other pay for code websites; probably like 8 of them can't find an unlock code. They have even searched the 'not found' databases.
Is it possible to have a phone that is 'unlockable?" or one that has no code for it? Are there any alternative methods to unlock the sim to use on other networks? I've never had such a hard time finding an unlock code for a cell phone.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide!

As mentioned earlier, this same thing happened to me. The customer service reps don't know why, but their computers tell them they don't have an unlock code. They have to open a "case" for you and some technical guru will call you back with the unlock code.
Keep in mind (I found this out the hard way), unless you root the phone, you won't be able to use the WiFi hotspot feature on T-mobile.

Well...I've done this, opened a case number, and the response was I was not eligable. Said I have to have active service for 6 months before I can have an unlock code. I manage to buy this outright on a gophone account.
Is it possible to software unlock via cable or some alternate method? It doesn't look like AT&T is willing to help me out. I'm not looking to use on T-mobile, I want to use this out of country.

Well I finally managed get an unlock code through AT&T.
Spent and hour last week with tech support, and then a supervisor had to then request the unlock code specially on my behalf to another person higher up. Got a case number and 1 week later this morning got the code. It was a painful process, totally not worth the time. Better to pay for the code.
I had tried cellunlocker.net 2 weeks ago, but I guess the code wasn't available then but is now.
Note to self; don't buy a phone when its totally brand new to unlock, wait a few weeks or months.

Question S21+ T-Mobile locked issue

I jumped on the S21+ T-Mobile variant as it was offered with extra $100 off, cheaper than unlocked. I assumed the phone would be able to be used on any carrier since it would be fully paid off. But inserting my Verizon sim, I'm greeted with it saying the sim is unlocked and a reason code 132. Anyone have any ideas on what's going on, what I should try, or just return for unlocked version?
Try calling T-Mobile for the unlock code. I thought phones in the US weren't locked anymore or maybe they won't be in the future. Good luck!

Thanks. I'm working with T-Mobile now, and they have suggested that I make a T-Mobile account then try to unlock it. Hoping all goes well
T-Mobile can't even *see* the phone to unlock it if it isn't attached to a T-Mobile SIM, so they won't be able to unlock it (nevermind willing) without that. If you can get one in there, you might be able to use 'team of experts' through Facebook or Twitter and have them unlock it, they're pretty good about working around normal limitations when you explain situations to them. We were able to get a still on EIP iPhone unlocked when we were in the Philippines by letting the TES agent know we were wanting to put a local SIM in, I would hope they'd be willing to work with you if you let them know you didn't realize it would be locked.
Will eat into your $100 discount some, though, with the risk that they tell you it still has to be active on T-Mobile for 45 days. I've always had good luck with them, they seem to be more capable of independent thought than a normal call-center person, provided you're calm with them.

Were you ever able to solve this? I have exact same thing going on with a Galaxy Tab S7+ that was bought directly from Samsung. Thought was too be unlocked but it's locked to TMobile. Strange thing is 3 different stories from 3 different TMobile reps. Phone can't be locked since you bought from manufacturer. Yes we can unlock it. And no we're can't unlock it until you've spent over $100 with prepaid fees lol.

So thank you for the suggestion. The Twitter TMobile contact was the secret. After hours on the phone with T-Mobile support (and without being super critical they were just NOT very knowledgeable .... I think I knew more than they did) the Twitter alternative was quick and easy. They added the IMEI to their system and I was unlocked in less than 24 hours.

General Method to unlock your T-Mobile S22 Ultra

I was able to get my T-Mobile S22 Ultra Unlocked 2 days ago by speaking to T-Mobile support via T-Force on Twitter. It's relatively easy, all you need to tell them is you frequently go overseas and have a trip coming up. I got my phone unlocked within a few minutes.

Yes that's correct. But I don't think it matters much of as long as you're in good standing on your account. I've been able to unlock phones this way even when I was on my first month of financing from T-Mobile.
I hate these posts. No they will not do this is your phone's not paid off. Obviously anyone will knock your phone if it's paid off no matter where you reach out or what excuse you give them.

Yeah, I was told at first that I need to at least have the device activated for 40 days in order for them to permanently unlock the phone. I only had 4 days of use on the S22U, T-Force person said they only make exceptions for people who travel overseas.

I've tried since day one of Android development back in the early 00's. Not once had it worked for me. Not with a financed phone anyways.
Mine was paid in full and while through the phone it said it was not eligible for unlocking I followed your advice and went on twitter and they approved my unlocking. Sweet

Yes. Same previously with an Iphone and the S21 Ultra. Tmobile has always come through for me on unlocking.

Yeah as long as your account is in good standing they usually help you out.
Now I'm debating if I should root. Lol
Make sure you are not using WiFi calling when you attempt to unlock it. My first attempt on a cell network fixed my unlocking problems.

Not gonna happen sadly bootloader isn't unlockable
This might be a stupid question, but what does unlocking allow you to do?

Unlocking a network locked phone allows you to use sim cards from other service providers.
I was able to unlock my s22 ultra (Bought from Samsung.com T-Mobile variant) took advantage of the $50 activation plus $100 discount.. As soon I received the phone, contacted T-Mobile via Twitter and their T-Force team was able to unlock the phone right away after providing my IMEI number. After the full unlock.. I switched my sim to eSim.. and then Flashed my phone with SM-S908U1 with TMB CSC.. (unlocked version with no T-Mo bloats) and used international sim as well
