Just unlocked my bootloader, and was wondering for the One S what the most stable 4.3 ROM is? If there's not a stable one yet, I'll just go to 4.2.2.
I want to start with something at the easier end of the flashing spectrum and then work my way up. I'm staying S-On by the way.
Cheers!
The best way to know what ROMs are the most stable is by flashing them and testing them for yourself.
Just be sure to read everything as you're going along so that you don't mess anything up.
As this is essentially a best ROM thread, it's against our rules.

I'm looking for anything and everything even remotely related to a different ROM/OS/MOD for my transfix. I've looked high and low and the only thing I could find is how to root it, and that's all I've been able to do so far. Is there anyone that could either provide me with some sort of ROM, or at least point me in the right direction?
-sadface- I guess there aren't any mods for it yet?

Nope no ROMS yet..Need a working CWM port first.
Ah man... That makes me sad. My girlfriend has a rooted Epic 4G touch and won't let me put Cyanogen on it.

This thread claims to be looking for beta-testers for a Transfix Rom:

I would beta test if I knew how to do all of the stuff they say I need to.

Well, it seems like a CWM port is on the way, which will go a long ways into doing any roms for this phone. Believe me I feel your pain, I hate stock, especially when a custom ROM would do wonders for the hardware in this phone (Like DTA2SD & updated Adreno drivers). All we can do is be patient and start with the custom recovery.
Just wondering what you guys thought.
I am rooted on JB and VRBLK bootchain. I don't know a lot about the Aroma installer. Where can I find more info on that, and can I install any ROM with it?
Or where should I start? There is so much info, it's hard to find a good place to start installing ROMS on the Verizon S3.

For you info aroma installer isn't some special process it is AIO program that devs use. Some ROMS are installed via the installer so we can cherry pick the mods we want. Also common knowledge is to go to the Android development section and the original development section for ROMS as those are the only 2 places with ROMS.
I know where to find them in the development section. I just want more info before I start flashing away. And with all of the recent changes to Jelly Bean, I don't want to flash something incompatible.

Well since you do have a Verizon varient of the S3 phone all ROMS including the ported ones posted here are compatible that is common knowledge. There isn't a compatibility issue with these ROMS it is the "people can't follow directions when flashing" issue and some bugs on some ROMs. Also the devs provide info about what is in these ROMS. If the ROMs weren't compatible with Verizon S 3 phones then it wouldn't have been posted here at all. Those incampatible ROMS will be in a more suitable section of the site.

Well partner, look over that guide posted earlier. You can rest easy if you follow it because with the unlocked boot loader you can flash any if the ROMs for the Verizon s3. Just remember to back up you imei and read the op of any ROM you're thinking about because done like cm10.1 cause issues .

Thanks guys.
On the Vibrant, you could not flash a gingerbread rom if you were on froyo, and vise versa. Are you saying it's ok to flash an ICS rom if you're running JB?
2 more quick questions.
What's this flash counter I keep seeing people talking about? What does it do, and how do I keep it from causing problems?
And, do I have to unlock the bootloader each time I flash a Rom or is it always unlocked after I unlock it? Or is it different with each Rom?
I know these are noob questions, but I've flashed plenty...... just not on this phone. It seems like Verizon tried to complicate the process.

The flash counter keeps track of how many times you've flashed via download mode(Odin only). It becomes a problem when you return your phone. You only need to unlock your phone once to flash custom ROMs only when you flash back to stock will your phone will be locked again.
Make your first flash synergy and back up your imei so we don't have to tell you that you should have...

Sorry, that question can't be answered. One thing I've learned from my time here is that all phones are NOT the same, what works on my S3 may or may not work on yours.
You'll have to make your own tests, get started flashing various ROMs and good luck!

You have to understand that all of those ROMs have some problems since they are fairly new. All are still in the early stages of development.

I dont know if you are new or not so please dont think I mean to preach. But, when I am deciding what rom to use I read pages upon pages of the thread for that rom. I believe this is important so not only can I see what rom works like I want but, also prepares me for what to expect after flashing. Simply taking someones advice on which rom to flash will not always end with the best result.
That being said I am loving masta's cm10.1 unofficial.

I couldn't agree more.
Asking people for advice is probably bad because many stick with the first one they find work well.
Or they use what someone else says works best.
Roms work differently on everyone's phone so you must try for yourself.
Also people become very bias when they find a ROM they like.
Haha so it may not be the best for your needs.
Good luck and get flashing

I'm looking for answers pertaining to the basis of how ROMs operate. Question: Do ROMs replace android operating systems or do they enhance and work along side them? Again, Do ROMs REPLACE an operating system or do they allow the user simply to use them better.
In the case of custom ROMs using Sense I get that. Clearly that ROM is enhancing the "Sense experience." But what of JB and ICS. If a user has ICS can it upgrade to JB?
MORE SPECIFICALLY: I am asking these questions in regards to myself. I am currently running android 4.0.4 and sense 4.0 on my HTC One XL (2.20). It's been rooted and ready to be flashed a ROM. I am seeking to install viperxl but am unsure how to proceed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1868236
Can I upgrade my phone not only to a Viperxl ROM but to the JB and Sense 4.1 version?? Or must I stick with the ICS versions? Finally WHY? Is this because the Viper ROMs do not actually replace the android OS, but others might?
Thanks for taking the time to read and help me out!
- Sincerely Learninnoob
They replace. They are custom softwares. You can flash the latest viperxl just fine. It will even flash the boot.img for you.

What is the point then for offering ICS ROMs?
Think of a Rom like you would windows software... (Well not exactly, but it's comparable)
It mimics you switching your computer from windows xp to windows 7, etc. Your switching out operating systems on your phone, all unique and customized in their own way.
The firmware you're on will allow you to switch roms as you please. Only thing to remember is to fastboot flash the boot.img to get it to boot :/

I'm gonna take you up on that titan as I have questions on kernels..
So I'm not sure if this is correct but if the firmware allows me to switch ROMs then that firmware is the 'limiting agent,' so to speak.. meaning the firmware will eventually stop me from upgrading?
I think I'm just a little confused there, but that seems like a topic for another time.
I have an idea then and I'm not sure I've found the answer yet. I currently am running on an at&t phone but since I've got su over my phone is it possible to flash a t-mobile radio onto the phone in order for it to transmit at t-mobiles appropriate frequency?

Rom = firmware. When you flash a Rom you are installing the entire firmware. If you want to use a different Rom be it ics, jb, you just flash a Rom, there is no limitation. You can flash any Rom for your phone but because of your hboot version you need to remember to flash the boot.img extracted from the rom you are flashing.
I do not believe there is a tmobile radio. And unfortunately with that hboot you cannot flash radios. You would need to downgrade your hboot which, to be perfectly honest, seems a bit beyond your level right now. If you did manage to downgrade your hboot without bricking, you could flash some radios to see if any work better than what you are using now.

You need to do your own research and decide for yourself. We are not here to do your homework. Read the OPs of the ROMs you are interested in. Pay attention to the bugs list and read the last 5 or so pages of the thread to see if any users are having issues. Remember XDA is not here to hold your hand. You are responsible for your device and so you must go do your own research.

Going to close this out before this goes into a "best ROM" thread.
If you want to know what ROMs to try, why not consider trying a few on your own and make a choice based on your own preference?
You will find you get a better understanding of what's out there as well.
Thanks!
