[Q] Basic Knowledge and Guidance on ViperXL ROMs - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I'm looking for answers pertaining to the basis of how ROMs operate. Question: Do ROMs replace android operating systems or do they enhance and work along side them? Again, Do ROMs REPLACE an operating system or do they allow the user simply to use them better.
In the case of custom ROMs using Sense I get that. Clearly that ROM is enhancing the "Sense experience." But what of JB and ICS. If a user has ICS can it upgrade to JB?
MORE SPECIFICALLY: I am asking these questions in regards to myself. I am currently running android 4.0.4 and sense 4.0 on my HTC One XL (2.20). It's been rooted and ready to be flashed a ROM. I am seeking to install viperxl but am unsure how to proceed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1868236
Can I upgrade my phone not only to a Viperxl ROM but to the JB and Sense 4.1 version?? Or must I stick with the ICS versions? Finally WHY? Is this because the Viper ROMs do not actually replace the android OS, but others might?
Thanks for taking the time to read and help me out!
- Sincerely Learninnoob

They replace. They are custom softwares. You can flash the latest viperxl just fine. It will even flash the boot.img for you.

What is the point then for offering ICS ROMs?

Think of a Rom like you would windows software... (Well not exactly, but it's comparable)
It mimics you switching your computer from windows xp to windows 7, etc. Your switching out operating systems on your phone, all unique and customized in their own way.
The firmware you're on will allow you to switch roms as you please. Only thing to remember is to fastboot flash the boot.img to get it to boot :/

I'm gonna take you up on that titan as I have questions on kernels..
So I'm not sure if this is correct but if the firmware allows me to switch ROMs then that firmware is the 'limiting agent,' so to speak.. meaning the firmware will eventually stop me from upgrading?
I think I'm just a little confused there, but that seems like a topic for another time.
I have an idea then and I'm not sure I've found the answer yet. I currently am running on an at&t phone but since I've got su over my phone is it possible to flash a t-mobile radio onto the phone in order for it to transmit at t-mobiles appropriate frequency?

Rom = firmware. When you flash a Rom you are installing the entire firmware. If you want to use a different Rom be it ics, jb, you just flash a Rom, there is no limitation. You can flash any Rom for your phone but because of your hboot version you need to remember to flash the boot.img extracted from the rom you are flashing.
I do not believe there is a tmobile radio. And unfortunately with that hboot you cannot flash radios. You would need to downgrade your hboot which, to be perfectly honest, seems a bit beyond your level right now. If you did manage to downgrade your hboot without bricking, you could flash some radios to see if any work better than what you are using now.

moved from win6.5 to android, got S-OFF, what next?

hey everyone,
I have been on this forum many years but now I have to restart again: I switched to the Desire S, over from good ol' windows..
I am confused by all the posts and just need a quick answer so I can start contributing here. I bought a Hong Kong Desire S in Beijing, it is S-OFF (I checked) and has some ROM on it which contains a lot of preinstalled stuff. Now I would like to switch to a pure, clean stock ROM.
Question 1: is there a clean, official ROM I can flash on the phone which will be updated over the air by Google/HTC legally, or will I need to do the update (as soon as there is a new Android version) from now on myself?
Question 2: IF I flash, do I need to care which ROM I use or can I flash in there whatever I want? Like, try a Europe ROM first, then a US ROM and maybe an Asian one afterwards? Will they all work, despite my phone being from Hong Kong?
Question 3: will the phone keep being S-OFF even after flashing?
I am aware that there are all the answers out there somewhere if I search long enough, but I would really appreciate if you could be so nice once and give me short answer here
thanks a lot!!
henrik
If you take a look in the thread a little way down, there is a selection of shipped tons 'shipped desire s rom collection', currently they are mostly various carrier based European, there is a clean stock rom also, which I'm running until I get s-off. However there are a couple threads with customised roms one from MarylandCookie and one from LBC, that may be a little more interesting. The custom roms won't change s-off, but I am unsure whether the stock roms will....
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
Once you are S-off flashing roms does not take you back to S-on, in fact I don't think its possible to go back.
Its also now possible for you to become root.
I'd be more tempted by the custom roms in this thread than by a stock rom.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
haha,
you guys are good, thanks a lot! "sent from my desire S", guess I need to install the xda dev app too asap
ok, then as a last question: I also would tend to install a custom ROM, however, isn't it true that after flashing such a ROM I cannot use the Marketplace app AND also will not receive official OTA updates?
On the other hand, if I install the Europe Stock ROM, I keep both these opportunities right? meaning, the stock rom will be updated regularly and I can buy apps on the app market?
You'd be best off to try both and see what you find to your liking
makes sense.
will download both and first try the newest MOD rom.. Hope I only have to connect it to the PC and run the exe.
Thanks both of you for your help!
cheers!

Custom: no problems with market - no ota updates (don't even try it - will mess your system if forced - but normaly will abort)
With EuropeStock you will be able to update without problems - but you will not have the nice sense3.0 lockscreen.
For both: root with "gingerbreak"
Than with clockworkmodrecovery (ROMmanager from market) you can do backups of the ROMs and could try both. BUT: BEFORE you install the OTA-update you have to switch to stock-recovery.
"good old win": I was on win-moblie for years - you will not miss it..
hth
I rooted my phone with gingerbreak successfully, but the "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" process stops after 5-10min, saying it was unsuccessful.. Is there another way to flash the custom rom, or better: is there something I forgot? do I need to change a setting somewhere? format the sd card?
Got it!!
Thanks everyone for your support!

[ROM]-Stock 1.55.531.3 Rooted, Deodex -- REMOVED DUE TO KANG :O

KANG - To steal or a stolen code when referring to programming. Also can refer to leaked coding.
Due to the copious amounts of kanging that now happens in regards to android development I will be pulling all of my links and changing the original posts with this. If you would like to use my roms please feel free to find the kanged version elsewhere.
For inspiring developers, rtfm or ask someone who knows what they are doing before you steal someone elses work, look at someones code and get the general idea. If you port or use something as a base, credit that person. Do not just link back to the thread where you got it from. My email is [email protected] so feel free to ask questions, if I know the answers I will be willing to assist.
I don't wish to call anyone out but I will say there are a few roms, specifically for MT4G Slide that have been kanged. One of which was taken from me, another was a kanged version of CM7 which was just the Settings.apk SettingsProvider.apk and Launcher.apk replaced. CM7 is framework edits, not just a list of apps an entire team works on. You cannot just replace apps in CyanogenMod and expect it to work thus the reason some parts of the Settings.apk force close. Its not hard to be an idiot but its even easier to spot bull**** work, do yourselves a favor, leave xda, leave rootzwiki, leave whatever thread you are on and learn from people who know what the fk they're doing.
If my email fills with hate mail, then fine, at least what I did I feel was right and do not have to worry about my development being taken and rebadged, if I'm out of line then have a moderator delete and close my thread. Thanks!
Mainly because we are looking for s-off... Good work though

I know Daniel60104's ROM does have the unsecure boot.img, not sure on this one.
On a side note, has anyone tried flashing the radio update that accompanied this release? I know that radio is a no-go for older ROMS, but since it was designed with this release, no word yet how it works with a rooted ROM.
Anyone noticed battery life improvement on this stock version? I've been using this for a week now and I can say there's a big difference compare to the older version. I am using the non-debloat (stock). Another thing is I have yet to experience the random warm battery issue that I've been experiencing from older stock based roms.

I have noticed much better battery performance with this stock ROM, as well. I'm using Daniel's stock, rooted ROM, and I ran Bloater to take out the things I didn't want (like TMobileTV, TeleNAV, QIK). This ROM runs very quick, smooth. I'm still wondering about the newer radio, though I'm hesitant to flash it because I can't afford to screw up this phone. This is my ONLY phone, it has to work.

As long as the Md5 matches your safe, just follow the instructions one at a time, like read all the way through them once and make sure you understand the steps, then go back and start the process, that's it the phone handles the rest...BUT its still scary I understand that, Hell I've had my own EVO Shift ROM for about 10 months and i still use the stock 2.2 radio on that phone

Given that I'm running 1.55.531.3, S-OFF and rooted, with the original stock radio, and everything is working splendidly (wi-fi, bluetooth, camera, gps, etc.), I'm not gonna mess with it for now.
I'm interested to see what HTC comes out with since they halted the 1.55.531.3 OTA update due to "performance issues". When they restart, I wonder if it will be a different version, for instance.

Well them performance issues can and will be addressed asap, its all about tweaking the ROM, we had major Sense reloads on the evo shift so we learned to allocate more memory here rather than there, and once a ROM was odexed/scripted/opted they flat out flew.
When it comes to the radio on my DoubleShot i will probably never change the radio cause if it aint broke dont fix it

[Q] Help Bricked my One-X and cant find the stock RUU

So i got a little ahead of myself today when i unlock my AT&T One X bootloader. I tried to instal CWR and then Cyan9. Rooted and unlocked fine but i get the feeling CWR is still not compatible with the AT&T One-X bootloader.
So the problem im having is reinstalling the stock RUU and ROM. I found lists and lists of RUUs and tried one the is supposed to work but i have had little success. How can i find the stock RUU for my phone or better yet is there a CWR that i can instal to get Cyan9 running?
Im sorry im sure you guys get idiot questions like this all the time but i have spent hours googling with no luck. Im desperate to use my phone again!
Thanks for you input in advanced

Thank you so much. You dont think CM would work on top of this CWM? Or am i missing a whole nother aspect here?
Frankly, I'm not entirely sure what all is involved in porting CM9 from one platform to another, but I would suspect we'll have to wait for HTC to release the source to pull some of the drivers, etc before we make much progress. I would expect somebody to have started a thread on it in the development section if anybody were actively working on it that the moment.
Lol there is no cyanogen mod for this device yet. If there was, and it would've been in the development section. You shouldve known better not to flash the file if it isn't for this device.
You deserve the brick..

I'm guessing you flashed the unofficial CM9 build for the international One X? That phone has a completely different CPU and SoC (Tegra 3) from the AT&T version (Snapdragon S4) and ROMs are not compatible between the 2.
Either that or you flashed the ROM from some random, completely different phone. In either case, don't flash ROMs for other phones. It won't work, and its a good way to brick your phone.
Sounds like you are pretty correct when you said you've gotten a little ahead of yourself. Don't Google around and install things on your phone unless you are very comfortable with what you are doing. If you are a noob, your best bet is to stick to the Development subforum for your particular device here on XDA.
I've posted an index thread in Development, and it is your friend. Its a sticky at the top of the Development subforum, and you should always read the threads stickied to the top of the forums. I've kept it updated with the latest ROMs that will work on your phone. It also links the appropriate RUUs, as well as other tools.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Also, even flashing the correct RUU will not work, unless you relock the bootloader.
If your smart enough to root and flash **** how did you not know you can't flash a Rom for an entirely different phone. Smh

Was that necessary? We were all noobs once
Anyway i think he got confused with all of the initials... He was saying CWR, Saying cyan9 should work on top of CWR. Hopefully was typo and meant CWM. No wonder you couldn't find any info. Sounds like he thought they were the same or went together. CWM stands for Clockwork Mod, not cyanogen. I may be wrong with this assumption. Anyway..

Complete Jelly Bean Rom

As per title, is there a complete JB Rom that I can obtain?
I'm a new Android user and yet to touch the stock Telstra One XL rom, so yes I'm a newbie to this.
I basically want the full functions of the phone like using the camera etc, as I noticed some roms here aren't final.
And Sense 4.0 is quite laggy and I'm really anal about it, so thought a clean and bloatware-free OS would do the trick.
If anyone can assist please.

What you need to do first is look inside the threads for original android development when you see 1 that said jelly bean or c m 10 read the very first host of the thread and see if it says a daily driver. If you're new to routing and developing for android you may get overwhelmed really quickly so it's best to wait until you find a rom that is available as a daily driver . Please excuse any typos you may find since I'm typing this using my voice lol

OK, thanks mate. Yes I want to use it and pretty much forget it, until a new software update becomes available from HTC/Telstra.
Just looking for a clean installation. Not really liking Sense 4.0 performance-wise.
I'm gonna be honest: I love Sense (at least the way the widgets look), but everything else is ehh. Check out the AOKP ice cream sandwich rom. It's optimized for speed. Once you root and unlock your bootloader that should be the first one you check out: it made MY XL run smooth as butter

Currently I don't think there are any Jelly Bean Roms that are 100% done. I am using the CM 10 by h8rift and I think this one is as close as there is to being 100% done. Here is the link to check it out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790032.
I am using this as my daily driver and haven't had too many problems with it and I love how fast and smooth everything is. That being said if you are looking for a rom that you can flash and leave and not mess with basically forever I wouldn't recommend and of the Jelly Bean ones. Some of them are getting close to being complete but none are quite there yet. I would stick to one of the Ice Cream Sandwich roms. I haven't tried any of them so I don't have personal experience with any of them but I do like the work h8rift has done on the CM 10 rom so I would at least look at his CM 9 rom and see if that looks good for you. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1808206. As I copied the link still seems like there are some things that need to be sorted out so I might go with the person above me's recommendation as he at least has personal experience.
Hope this helps!

no, you'll brick your phone with that ROM. ROMs in that section are ONLY for International HOX.
regarding on unlocking and rooting, like others have said, I'd suggest you go to this section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1541
read as much as you can on threads related to unlocking and rooting, otherwise, it can brick your device if something is wrong. And reading those can also helps you understand how things work so you can troubleshoot problems later on.

Can someone please confirm that these steps are either spot on or if I'm missing something?
Just to recap, its a HOXL - version 1.89 - Telstra (AUS)
Plug phone via USB (Charge only)
Enable USB debugging
Go to HTCDev to unlock bootloader
Flash TWRP custom recovery via Fastboot (GooManager) Google App store
Flash Pre-rooted ROM of your choice (Telstra AUS tick approval).
I just did a backup, factory reset and wiped all data. I want to keep the factory ROM, just in case things go south.

Yep! Though your recovery flashing step is worded a bit weird. What you can do is download GooManager Beta from the Play Store, open it, hit menu, and select Install OpenRecovery (or something like that, I forget the exact wording). That will download and install TWRP for you. Reboot into recovery to confirm it worked.

difference about two Android developments

Hi everybody:
I need to ask this: what its the difference about the forum "One X android development and One X Original Android Development" until this day I only used roms from "One X android Develepment" but I see in the other post are roms too....
I installed cocinated roms on my HTC ONE X LTE AT&T, Im from version 2.20... but If I decided to install again the original factory rom ( version 2.20 ) nothing happen with my phone ? and If I decided to get it again, where can I get the original version version 2.20 and how to reinstall it ?
just ask because I try several cocinated roms ( the last used its viper rom ) but in this last rom my phone battery its drain very very fast, and with the original version 2.20 ( without a root ) the battery have a good life....
please, any help with this questions ? please ?
Android development is mods, tweaks, kernels and ROMs that have to do with sense based software.
Original android development has to do with raw Google software, I.e. aosp ROMs and kernels. Contains aosp, aokp, PA, miui.... in short its Google software without any manufactured overlays. Hope this helps

Umm I'm not sure because of language barrier but, maybe he's referring to like a RUU? do you want the phone to go back to the way it was when you bought it?

yes that its my question, how if I dont feels good with install any cocinated rom, so No go back at all, just only stay root my phone but install the original factory room ( you say RUU ) , I just say this because I remember when I update my phone to the version 2.20 ( without root ) my battery its very fine because its longer life....
If I want to do this, where can I get that RUU and how to install it, and if I can do this, nothing happen with my phone ?
Nothing will happen, although you will lose root and you will be relocked  but very easy to root and unlock again
One more question before I provide the correct ruu, you are 100% sure it was version 2.20 before you rooted?

yes, this its the version that I was downloaded and installed to my phone, then I pass several months with this room, until the new exploit to have root show in XDA Developers... so I rooted..
My phone its those what we need first flash via Fastboot the "boot.img" and then flash the room...If I dont do this the phone dont start, just show the "initiating swager" and never start up.....
I came from this version :

Keep in mind several things:
1) Battery meter when you flash a ROM is not accurate. You need to use the phone for a couple days until the meter re-calibrates itself. Charge to full, then drain to 10-20%, and repeat a couple times to get the most accurate calibration. You need to do this every time you flash a new ROM, otherwise the battery meter readings can't be trusted.
2) Rooting in itself does not affect battery. Its not a matter of root versus non-root that is causing battery drain (my feeling is that the meter is just not calibrated, per item 1 above). Other causes for battery drain may be mis-matched radio and RIL. You can try a different radio.
3) If you just want to revert to the stock 2.20 firmware, you can try flashing the stock pre-rooted version here.
I wouldn't recommend running the RUU just to get back to stock ROM. You would have to relock the bootlaoder, run the RUU. Then unlock bootloader and re-install TWRP if you ever want to install custom ROMs again. Flashing the pre-rooted ROM I linked is just much easier.
4) Make a nandroid backup in TWRP next time, before flashing ROMs. That way, you can just revert to the old ROM, if the new ones you've tried are giving you any issues.
5) What the heck does "cocinated" mean? I Googled it, and aside from an obscure Twitter feed with no posts, this thread is the top result!

I always have a nandroid (TWRP backup) around, in case anything goes wrong flashing or doing other mods. At least on your computer, that you can load onto the phone. But on the phone's SD itself is the safest place to keep one (if you can afford the space).
Don't have to make a nandroid of every ROM you flash. But at least one known good one, that you can revert to in case of trouble. I always do a nandroid of the stock ROM (after bootloader unlock, root, etc) in case I want to revert to it. But its not completely necessary. Just a known good, working ROM.
