[Q] A bit confused. - General Questions and Answers

Heys,
I've been installing ROM's for a while and I was looking at this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387504
This is the page to download the ROM but it gives me a load of files and I'm not sure how to flash it.
I would ask it in that thread but it doesn't let me as I'm new :3
Thanks

Choose the latest/newest zip file..
Well I assume you know how to flash ROM via Recovery Mode. And well, just reminding if you come from another ROM, you have to do full wipe (wipe data, cache and dalvik cache). Good luck..

miui and CM7 keeps cycling the inital loading

hi all,
Ok, I'm new to this stuff.
1. used the simple root and it worked great.
2. I then flashed CM7 and it worked great except market was not on it.
3. I downloaded and flashed gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip by mistake, not realizing I had to use another gapps.
4. After I flashed it, the cm7 and android setup screens kept cycling between each other.
5. I restored to clockworkmod (sp) and then deleted the gapps and tried to then flash cm7. It didn't cycle between cm7 and android setup, but the cm7 screens kept cycling and never got past that.
6. I thought perhaps it was just cm7 now, so I tried miui and it's doing the same thing. It's cycling between the gingerbread man and MIUI with the status bar and won't do anything else.
Very frustrated. what have I done and how do I fix it?
Thanks folks,
Brett
I believe that those ROMs both require ENG S-OFF. Open simple root on your computer, click Fixes, then apply the fix there. Also, did you make sure you cleared your Dalvik cache before flashing? Always do a factory reset AND clear dalvik cache when changing ROMs.

what method do you use to flash cm7? what exactly do you do.
to clarify what is your exact process for flashing the rom?

Hi. Thanks.
I use rom manager to boot to recovery. Then I install zip from sd card. I go through the process until it says reboot. It's when I reboot that I get stuck in the bootloop. It just cycles from the CM7 circular arrow to blank and then to the arrow thing again. MIUI does the same between the gingerbread guy and the status bar and back.
I then take the battery out, take out the sdcard, down volume & power, reinsert sdcard and do a restore so I can use my phone again in clockworkmod 3.0.0.6.
thanks,
brett

actually, I did that.
it's weird. I restored a few times, did the above you suggested, and still in a loop. The first time I installed CM7 it was great, then the gapps thing seems to have screwed it up.
I'm lost.

Probably a silly question but you're doing full reinstalls, right? Not using a nandroid backup? I can't think of any reason that you should be boot looping permanently from flashing the gapps if you're going into clockwork, doing a factory reset, wiping the cache, then wiping the Dalvik cache, then flashing the ROM.

hmm. I'm a little new to this, but I'm using the backup/restore option in recovery mode and am then flashing one of the backups. Could that be the problem?
If it is, how do I do a full reinstall?

That's your problem right there. If you make a backup of a busted ROM, its still going to be busted when you restore it.
Do the factory reset, then clear the cache again just to make sure, go to advanced and clear Dalvik, then go to the main menu and use the choose install zip from sdcard option, then choose "choose zip from sdcard", find the ROM zip file and select it, then say yes to the flash and reboot when its done. If you are flashing CM7, make sure that you flash the correct gapps package after you flash the ROM or the ROM won't be very useful.

I'll give it a shot and then get back to you.
I do believe, however, that the restore I'm doing is the backup I did right before I did the original cm7 flash. I'll try.
thanks!
If you toggle wifi on after the first boot it goes into a bootloop. This is a know bug not a hunch.

[Q] [HELP] Can't boot GT-S5670 (galaxy fit)

Hi Guys,
Has anyone had this problem?
I had Creed's Rom v2.0 last month, and that worked perfect. I used it for a month.
this morning I decided to change my android rom into a new version of Creed's Rom.
I tried to boot and flash the Creed's Rom v3.0 and it's successfully flashed,,
But, whenever I try to boot my phone, I got stuck with the boot animation!!
It's never take me into the home screen??
It's keep showing me the bootanimation (Creed's Rom Text) for a long time ..,
So i decided to go back into SGFit default stock and successfully flashed it with ODIN..
When the device try to reboot, I get the same SAMSUNG bootanimation,,
it's keep rebooting the phone again and again (without any result),
And then I decide to flash the other rom., I tried "CyanogenMod 7.1",, I flashed it successfully, I do "Wipe Data / Reset" and "Wipe Cache Partition" also "Wipe Dalvik Cache" too, but whenever I try to reboot the phone, I've always got the freakin bootanimation and never take into the homescreen..
I also reformatted the memory card, still no result... :/
Any ideas please???

I had a similar problem yesterday. To me was advised to install via ODIN stock ROM (S5670XXKPI) which has 4 files. I did it, and the system is booted. Then I changed stosk and other custom ROM and everything works OK.

The first you install S5670XXKPI, after you installed and the system is booted, you later install what want.

[Q] Rom + Kernel installation question

Hey Guys, Monday evening, i guess, i'm gonna receive my Nexus 5 32GB White... Well my question is:
After unlocking and rooting, I want to install Catclysm Rom + Franco.Kernel If i delete the Boot.img file inside the zip of cataclysm rom and replace it with the franco's img will it work?? will i have Cataclysm and franco.kernel at the first boot?? So i don't have to reboot again to flash the kernel
Thank you guys for your help
p.s.: In future when cataclysm will get another update, do i have to wipe evrything or just cache and dalvik?? (Before flashing i'll delete the boot.img file inside the zip so i won't loose the kernel)
p.p.s.:Maybe i'm crazy but i need to know these little things xD
Hi,
Yes you can replace the boot.img inside the zip before flashing the rom..., but is it too hard to flash it separately?
With a rom update you can make a dirty flash (only cache partition+Dalvik cache) but if there is a new base it is recommended to do a full wipe to avoid some weird behaviors, bugs, etc... In any case if you do a dirty flash and you have some issues, you'll be good to do a full wipe.
Sometimes the dev recommend to do a full wipe...
For me it's always a full wipe, always begin with a fresh intallation so I'm pretty sure that all will be fine. It makes time to setup again the rom but...

Some noob questions.

Hello XDA community,
I've rooted my HTC One X+ like 2 months ago.
I still got the latest stock ROM but I want to put a custom ROM on it.
Which is this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987885
I still got some questions about it since it will be the first time flashing a ROM, because the thread isn't really clear to me so I hope someone can help me out with a little bit more detailed guide than mentioned in the ROM thread.
1. Do I have to wipe all my data?
2. Is a dalvik wipe really needed?
I contacted the developer of the ROM he said I didn't have to but when I asked more things about it he didn't reply.
3. How to flash a boot.img?
I can't find a really good tutorial on that.
4. What's the really right order to perform this flash mentioned in above linked thread?
I hope anyone of you can help me out since most of the threads I've seen around people are *****ing about: you shouldn't do it if you don't know what you are doing blablabla.
Since I really want to learn something about it too.

FULL WIPE is clearly recommended when you want to flash another rom. That means (/boot) /system /data /cache /dalvik. You can try it without a FULL WIPE but that will causes errors in most cases.
You need a working HTC USB cable
You need working adb/fastboot, download it from here
You need latest HTC drivers, download it from here
You need a GOOD custom recovery, download it from here
Additionally you need a flashable rom + boot.img
When you got all these we can proceed with flashing a rom

Hello LS.xD,
Thanks for your reply.
I am not at home at the moment.
I will be in about 4.5 or 5 hours, so I will download everything then.
I got the recovery flashed already, so I can probably skip that.
My HTC drivers are probably outdated.
Since my HTC desktop programm had to update the last time I opened it.
And I downloaded the files of the ROM too.

By the way LS.xD,
I got 'CWM-based Recovery v6.0.3.2'. (That's what it says in the top when I am in recovery mode)
I got three wipe options:
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- wipe dalvik cache
These are all the wipes I got to perform AFTER installing the zip right? Because if you do it before you will wipe the zip file, is that right?

Its for a reason i recommended the recovery in my post. Pls install and THEN we can go on
and NO you first perform the wipe and then install a rom.
and pls uninstall HTC sync before using fastboot to flash boot.img as it will cause errors if you have htc sync installed.

Probably a dumb question, but if you do a factory reset your music and pictures will be deleted, why doesn't the zip file be deleted? I will test it at home though. Factory reset, put the zip file on it, then factory reset again in recovery and look if the zip file still exists on my phone.

It could be caused by a few things. It usually means outdated recovery. @Android-Andi has recovery thread in the Dev section with the latest versions of PhilZ, TWRP, and CWM. Try flashing one of those. Also, make sure you check the md5/sha1 on the downloaded file to make sure it isn't corrupt.
