[SOLVED] aptX support for the Note 3 (US/European/Korean version confirmed) - Galaxy Note 3 General

UPDATE January 7th: Posted the log which confirms the presence of aptX
UPDATE October 16th: AptX confirmed. I tried it with my bluetooth headphones (Harman Kardon BT). It connects via aptX(LED flashing four times)
UPDATE October 5th: According to a recent live chat, the US and European version do support aptX. The Korean version has it printed on the back of the box.
I just had a customer chat with Samsung US. Here's the transcript.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Samsung: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Visitor: Hi, I'm currently using the Samsung Galaxy S 4 and I would like to preorder the new Galaxy Note 3 but I need the bluetooth protocol aptX that the Galaxy S4 supports. Do you know if the Note 3 also supports aptX?
Samsung: I understand your concern.
Samsung: I'll be glad to assist you.
Samsung: May I place you on hold for 3 minutes, while I gather the information on your request?
Visitor: Sure. Thank you very much.
Samsung: Thank you.
Samsung: Thank you for being on hold.
Samsung: I have checked with the information and I would like to inform you that (aptX) bluetooth profile is not supported by Note3 device.
Visitor: Ok. Thank you very much for helping me out.
Wonder who had the great idea to remove aptX... .

The unboxing videos show that apt-X is specifically mentioned on the back of the Note 3 box, so I suspect the Samsung rep is incorrect.

If this is correct I will pull my thread immediately.
But I could not see any aptX on the back of the box in this unboxing video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxf3btdm0C4 After 11 seconds he shows the back.

I'm sure I've seen a video with the apt-X logo on the back, will try to find it again.

Ask Supercurio he might know the answer...

What's the use of this "aptX" ? I never heard about it ! ^^

AptX is a bluetooth protocol. It's an audio codec. . Standard aptX goes up to a bitrate of 352kbps. Best mp3's only have a bitrate of up to 320 kbps, so the remaining 32 kbps don't really matter.
There are some other versions of aptX such as aptX lossless with the capability of much higher data rates.
The advantage of aptX is its convenience. Adapter attached to the sound system, switch bluetooth on on your aptX device and connect it. Done. Now you can listen to your mp3 collection without any further losses in quality.
For guys who like to listen to lossless music it's not the right choice of course.
But you cannot hear the difference between a 320kbps mp3 and a let's say 800 or 1000 kbps flac anyways. If you don't believe me do a blind test with foobar and if you are one of the fortunate few, who actually are able to hear the difference, well congrats.

If the recording is exceptional I can take that challenge.

Ok, if you have a great recording maybe you can hear the difference when you really focus on the recording. But where's the joy in that?

Well, try it yourself. Get a QUALITY 96/24 or 192/24 or heck even a quality 48/16 file and encode it to FLAC or mp3 on your own. I have a bunch of classical, flaming lips, Gabriel, king crimson etc recordings and the difference is night and day on a capable system or with some good cans. Not everyone can appreciate and many more will care less because they've never heard the difference. You'd be amazed at differences that can be heard playing a movie at reference level and what ever is considered loud in your household. I myself rarely get to enjoy movies at that level. Mp3 and aac needs to die already. Recording artists are partly to blame for this.

Maybe they are able to develop a codec in a few years, that has the size of a mp3 but is lossless. But back to topic.
I hate it when they announce a new product like the Note 3 with all the features and stuff and the customer support doesn't know **** about their own products. Some say yes, some say no. Some say they don't have the info. Who else has the info if not the manufacturer? Ridiculous.

apt-x as far as I knew is included with the Note 3.

I need this confirmed. No speculation.

Considering Samsung purchased CSR who OWN Apt-X it seems unlikely in the extreme that they would go backwards and not support this since it has been on all their high-end stuff since the S3 (and lots of their less high-end stuff also). Add to this that they make a number of Apt-X capable accessories and it seems even less likely.
EDIT: ...and yes, it is very obviously on the box in that unboxing video.

It seems there are different versions.
@WILD9: Thanks for the video. As the guy mentions in his video it's the Korean version. On the video I posted on the first page, he shows the back at about 11 seconds. There's no aptX mentioned on the back. I don't get it why they release different versions without aptX... .
Here's the link of the video I posted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxf3btdm0C4
EDIT: After watching your unboxing video, it's pretty ****ed up to see what kind of accessories they all have included.

Possibly something to do with Exynos? Does he mention which processor it has, I have no sound here.

In the description it says 2.3 Ghz Quad Core. I'll ask which one it is.
Is there a way to edit the thread name? I would like to mention that the Korean version supports it whereas the European and US versions do not. Or at least it seems they don't.

[Q] APT-X HD Bluetooth Audio

What is the story with APT-X? I am starting to see bluetooth headphones and other "receivers" supporting this, but I am not finding any information on which phones, mp3 players, or other "transmitters" support APT-X. Can anybody shed any light on this subject?
Would like to know this as well.
No point in getting a new phone if this isn't supported, at least I will have reasonable audio quality through bluetooth if I get a headset + phone with this.
...bump...
...bump...
apt-X is a lossless codec for bluetooth audio, MUCH better than A2DP.
If htc (for example) want´s to pimp a phone with it, they have to pay licence fee to CSR. As there are only a few bt receiver with apt-X, they will not pay and implement it (instead they get crappy "beats")
I think, apt-X is only a kernel-driver, no hardware, but not sure about this.
If so, a kernel chef could cook some additional codec in, but this is not open source codec...
I would LOVE an apt-X enhanced bt kernel for my sensation!

"Filmic Pro" like video recording apps on Android...

I have Galaxy S2 and as everyone knows its camera is beast but sadly we can't see its own real performance. Android market has full of games and programs so android is not crawling anymore but there is no any video recording program like iphone's "filmic pro" which have 48 mb/s video bitrate & exposure lock & manual focus etc... Is it so hard to do? We still working camera hacking which is changing only video/audio bitrates and its just peak to 30 mb/s but its quality is still not enough. We need an app! Don't you think it is?
i like to know this to... for SG4T
Agreed, anyone??! I'm looking for it, and still no solution. Especially for manual focus while shooting video.
Agree with you guys! I really miss an app like filmpic pro. It's able to shoot with 24 fps what I really miss from available android camera apps.
Check this out!!!!

Thanks I already use that but exposure lock and fps features are not working,(at least for me) In this case, it has focus problems while you tap the record button. (it leaves focused position to zero suddenly) Plus, image quality is not quite enough even on 50mb bitrate etc... I'm wondering, they were saying exposure lock comes with ICS a long time ago but why are we still waiting for it?

Where do you found this info? I asked them about that but they never replied to me so I think they will never release this product for android. By the way, android is not like ios and iphone, there is a lot of brand and models which is different hardwares for android phones. I guess its hard to handle that to get this product work on every android phones.

does anyone have patched version of filmic pro 6.0..?

Hands-On: Mi Mix 2S 8GB White Ceramic Edition (Q&A)

I've got my hands on the 8GB RAM / 256GB ROM White Ceramic edition.
So I made a quick unboxing and hands-on in 2K resolution and 60FPS:

Any questions? I have the device and I'm happy to answer.
I'll do an in depth review after 1 week of usage.
I've seen a few people specifically mention "ceramic edition", but I though all variants were ceramic this time?

Probably true, I was also confused. In end of March I was reading news regarding the 6GB vs. 8GB variants, and the Chinese websites keep saying the 8GB variant was specifically ceramics. I think in the end all variants are ceramic, but it added to the confusion. Is anyone with a 6GB variant able to confirm this?
Are you using the Global version? I've seen some reviews (with the Chinese version) and it seems video recording sound is pretty bad, also for in-call audio. Could you confirm?
Also, I think it comes with a case, right? How is it? Does the camera still stick out with the case?

Thanks. Unfortunately for monetized videos the selection of music is very limited due to copyright problems. Almost all classical music is copyrighted, so I did a quick search on copyright free background beats and took the first one.
Next time I may simply speak instead of having music. But English is not my native language, and I hate my voice =)
Thanks for the feedback

I appreciate your sentiment, but there may be misunderstanding here. All classical music (not neo or modern but old school) is public domain and not copyrighted, because classical music has been created more than 70 years ago. Certain performances by certain artists may be copyrighted, but the vast majority of classical music is completely free to use. Moreover, and this is a guess but I think a good guess, automatic algorithms by Youtube couldn't distinguish between royalty free and copyrighted classical music.

Thanks. I meant the performances of course which are under copyright. I do sampling and beat production in my free time and had to hire a sample Clearance service for the songs i sold.
Moreover i cater to a very homogeneous target audience which isn't really into classic music. Currently a lot of tech channels are using "casey neistat type beats". That's exactly what i did in my video. Sorry if it didn't fit your taste, next time I simply usey voice instead of music. Haha

My Mix2S was 6GB /128GB, it's white ceramic. It looks like yours, there's silver aluminium frame as well.
I'd got mine from MBK too.
Well, I'm sure I overpaid as well, but I went cheap. 6gb of ram and 64 of storage. Which is enough for me. In black.
720ish CAD from gearbest. Global version.
I can confirm that at least with my carrier Koodo (same as Telus) I get LTE and LTE+ (although it shows accurately as 4G and 4G+)
It's nice, but I wish the face recognition and Google assistant were working properly.

Well, global version just means that it supports most of the existing bands around the world, but the other variants do still support quite a few. Perhaps what you have is not a global version, but it still supports the bands that you need. Why did you say that yours was global, was it advertised as global?
I'm not an expert on Google Assistant but I have played with it quite a bit on previous phones and on my current Pixel XL. I may be able to help, if luck has it, to troubleshoot your particular problem. What are you trying to do and what isn't working, precisely?

It WAS advertised as global version. It comes with the global rom, with Google play and all that.
Maybe it is some other version that they flashed with the global rom, is there a way to check?
For the assistant. While it's sitting on a table, screen off. I say OK Google, and nothing happens. It's supposed to light up and let me talk to the assistant.
My LG G6 does it fine.
Also, I can't find the settings for face unlock.

I honestly don't know if there's an easy way to check aside from trying the phone with a carrier that is supported on global but not on others. Perhaps through some logcat info or maybe there's an app, I don't know. Maybe another user could answer.

The phone definitely should have hardware to use lower power microphone to listen to voice commands with screen off. That is a standard feature of the 845 chipset. It may be disabled, though I doubt it. Are you sure you set it up correctly? I had a whole helluva time setting up a brand new Galaxy S9 today, but trying to do the opposite of what you want - no voice recognition with screen off, but voice recognition with screen on. The settings were buried by Google, and it took a few minutes to find them.
UPDATE: BTW, there must have been a very recent Google Assistant update recently, because things are now behaving differently from what I remember. You might want to try to experiment setting up the assistant and turning it off several times over to get the proper behavior - I just tried to set up my Pixel XL assistant 30 seconds ago and I couldn't. Gonna play with it myself.
As for face recognition, it's like this:
Settings/Security & Location/Smart Lock/Trusted Face. In your firmware, "Security & Location" may be "Security and Lock screen" or something similar.
Update 2: I can no longer set up Google Assistant with this new software the way it used to work with old software . Even though I did it today on the S9.
I am baffled... maybe bugs?
Here's what you need to do though for your goal.
Settings/Google/Search/Voice/Voice Match --- enable "Access with Voice Match," enable "Unlock with Voice Match." You should be set.
Yeah, I'll play with the assistant some more. I am aware of how to set it up, but I'll play a bit with it.
I literally don't have that option for face unlock. If I remember correctly, that's the Google version. I thought xiaomi had their own version built in, maybe something they left out of the global rom?

The global rom is not yet available on the Xiaomi website, so we cannot say whether it's bugs and missing features yet. The fact that you don't have the "Trusted Face" option in Google settings or the Xiaomi variant of this feature makes me think that you have an incomplete rom that will probably be updated to rectify these issues in the future.

[petition] 24bit/192khz Hi-Res Audio not supported on Mi A1: petition on xiaomi forum

did you know that the Xiaomi MI A1 has no Hi-Res Audio compatibility?
as seen on this thread on the official poweramp forum seems to be that Xiaomi did not add the latest qualcomm patch that makes possible to use Poweramp V3 with 24bit/192khz audio quality.
actually there is a petition thread on the official Xiaomi forum but we lack of votes to make developers know this issue.
note: maybe this is due to qualcomm royalties or patents like with QuickCharge but in this case the hardware is totally aviable to this function even more some custom roms have the patch included
i hope that with this post more people vote for this petition so this way users with stock rom can have a better audio experience on this device

Hi-res audio makes absolutely no difference to how music sounds, it's pure snake oil. Don't waste your time on this.
Don't be taken in by marketing gimmicks about higher resolution: it means nothing. Instead, watch the full pair of Monty explanations of the technical details of when bits and frequencies matter and when they don't.

Certainly not everyone notice the difference but some people myself included can hear the quality diferences, also even if its not a necessary feature this may be usefull for custom roms that want to have a focus on audio quality, also when using the "fake" hd mode on poweramp the sound goes worse and certainly everybody can notice that.

What headphones do you use with this phone that you are able to spot the difference between 16b/48kHz and 24b/192kHz?

did you know that the Xiaomi MI A1 has no Hi-Res Audio compatibility?
as seen on this thread on the official poweramp forum seems to be that Xiaomi did not add the latest qualcomm patch that makes possible to use Poweramp V3 with 24bit/192khz audio quality.
actually there is a petition thread on the official Xiaomi forum but we lack of votes to make developers know this issue.
note: maybe this is due to qualcomm royalties or patents like with QuickCharge but in this case the hardware is totally aviable to this function even more some custom roms have the patch included
i hope that with this post more people vote for this petition so this way users with stock rom can have a better audio experience on this device

You can you USB Audio Player Pro on custom rom like GZOSP or LineageOS 15.1 to get 192kHz/24bit direct to headphone.

Don't believe in usb audio player pro info. You should launch Terminal application, use "dumpsys media.audio_flinger" ater "su" to check the output like my attachment when it's playing.

the idea it's to have the feature on stock android, custom roms are great on fixing manufacturer software errors/mistakes, but not everyone want to loose warranty/screw their phones.
I'll try to gather more votes for this. But to be real, developers are too lazy to fix and add features since this is like an illegitimate child of Xiaomi and Google and they are more focused with MIUI phones.
Kindly also link in OP the link for discussion in Mi A1 subforum so someone can ressurect that thread.

You got right ! Lol 48 in output.
Due to the very powerful amp the a1 has i dont notice any "serious" difference comparing it with my mx4pro with fiio a5 amp that supports 24/192 (tested with the command you told me). Using sennheiser hd600.

Question International ROM for XIAOXIN PAD PRO 2021 unlikely?

All the news this week is referring to a Snapdragon 888 and 8Gb ram P12 Pro. Do we think the 870 2021 Xiaoxin will ever receive an International ROM?
I've got one in the mail and thinking I may have made a big mistake. Its main use will be netflix and Disney+ and I wanting to take advantage of Dolby Vision.
Can't say for sure about Disney+, but I have no issue playing Netflix Videos on Full HD downloaded from Play Store.
In case you're wondering, I installed Play Store with an APK downloaded from APK Mirror and it seems to work out of the box.
The only thing i didn't like about the tablet is it disables notification for each app by default and set battery optimization option on by default on newly installed app which could affect some things like notifications. Other than that, this tablet is a satisfying multimedia powerhouse
Edit: Also i set Dolby option to "Movie" and it sounds wonderful.
Well this is promising. Is yours the 2021 version? Did you update any software and just use out of the box?
Does it have widevine 1? I've seen reports of it dropping back to 3?
I guess you have to have the ultra subscription (which you may not have) but did you notice if Netflix offers Dolby Vision?
I'll be steaming most my content via plex so as long as that works well I guess it won't be a total loss if Disney+ and Prime aren't in FHD HDR.
I have Plex, Tubi, Locast, Peacock and Kodi on mine and no issues with any of them. This is the best tablet I have ever owned. Even Starmaker (Karaoke app) works well with Bluetooth headset.
Great news. Mine arrives next week I'll report back.
Looking forward on catching up on some of the latest series from the comfort of my bed!!
Also going to give moonlight a go to try and game stream my pc from downstairs.
I've got mesh WiFi-6 so hopefully it'll work well.
Hi!!!
i have an issue. i got on a spending spree and ordered the tablet. first of all it is not as bright as i expected and i paid lot for it (due to VAT) i have GOOGLE PLAY
but here is my problem?
how to check for HDR?
NETFLIX doesn't support HDR for this tablet (only for p11 pro...)
should i get prime video?
do you have HDR?
If you updated via the update when you first boot you've lost widevine 1. Download DRM off the play store and it'll tell you your current level (it's 1 out of the box).
Out the box the tablet does FHD on Netflix with no HDR as you say. Prime video is SD and a waste of time.
Just got to hope for an international ROM or else you've got a great tablet which is limited by its software.
I'm doing everything via plex and its working well.

I'm sort of in the same boat. If you're just using it for media the P11 Pro has the better software.
However if we get a proper international release and firmware it'll be worth it still.
The P12 Pro talk at the moment referees to a Snapdragon 888 processor so I'm not holding my breath.
I'm lucky really despite having amazon prime, disney+ and Netflix subs I'm having to torrent the Dolby Vision versions of the stuff I want to watch to my plex. It's a ball ache having to do it, but at least I've not wasted my money.

i expected at least better brightness.
if i had gotten the p11 pro i would have saved 200 euros........... + vat
I must have got lucky as I didn't have to pay any import charges so it cost me £350 delivered which is a very good price for the hardware.
Shame there's not a bigger scene on here supporting custom roms etc.

i paid 400 euros + 150 for import charges... the p11 pro would have been 420 total...

Where did you get it from? Mine was from Giztop but I paid for express shipping.
I also bought mine from Giztop, £435 delivered, including the keyboard case.. pretty good deal if you ask me.
Havent updated base firmware to avoid losing the widevine L1 as everyone is referencing.. but am also hoping we eventually get a global rom for it.
I've done more digging on this. I've updated and still have widevine level 1.
Pretty happy with it overall. One stuck pixel though
If an international rom doesn't come out I'm possibly going to pick up an S7+ second hand when their new one launches.
so you could order this with international rom?

Yeah that's the 2020 version. We're talking about the 2021 version which does not have an international version.
