Are there any aftermarket USB to micro-USB cables with the shorted 4/5 pins that will activate the S4 and put it into car mode?
And are there any Y-cables with the shorted 5-pin micro-USB cable to activate car mode, AND output sound from the S4's micro-USB to a line out?
Basically the same cable that's sold with the iBolt? I'm just looking to buy the cable and not the entire dock/cable.

Does the cable put the S4 into car mode? I think there's a difference between car mode and dock mode right? A lot of the car dock programs like iBolt's own app can do certain things when it's in car mode (and not dock mode). I can turn on Dock Mode via settings or drop down notification menu, but there's no way to turn on Car Mode. Funny thing is, the CarHome app turns on Car Mode when it launches even without a cable.

Hi,
connecting the cable, your phone will go in Dock Mode, and I setup stock option of the Phone to do Nothing when dock cable is connected.
Then I setup Tasker, to detect when phone go in Dock Mode. With Secure Settings and Tasker I can put phone in Car Mode. Please note that Samsung's Car Mode, is not Android Native Cardock, so you need to workaround this.
Due this limitation i cannot use a Dock on My desk. This Because my phone will go in car mode when connected to a dock.
You can workaround this, if you have a Bluetooth Radio on the car.
With Tasker you can Detect Dock Cable and turn on Bluetooth, and trigge car mode when your car hands free will be connected.

So I ordered that USB cable from eBay and it works very well! It automatically puts the phone into Dock Mode when plugged in.
I have the phone set to launch CarHome Ultra when it goes into Dock Mode, and CarHome Ultra actually turns on Car Mode automatically when it launches. It can also be set to turn on the phone's Drive Mode if you want, and it turns on Bluetooth, and turns off WiFi also.
So now I just plug the phone into the USB charger, it launches CarHome Ultra automatically, turns on Car Mode and Bluetooth which then pairs with my car's bluetooth. I even have the home button working so that it goes back to CarHome Ultra when pressing the home button (using Xposed framework with EnableCarDock module on stock, rooted odexed Sprint S4).
Too bad my car's bluetooth is older and does not have the media playing profile so I can't stream the phone's sound via bluetooth. I'd either have to use the headphone out to the car's auxillary (works great but bluetooth phone can't be used when the headphone jack is in use - stupid Samsung!), or buy another bluetooth to auxillary device just for music/sound streaming, or buy iBolt's Y-cable (which many people seem to report poor sound quality or lots of noise).
The S2 Car Dock doesn't work with the S4
For the folks out there wondering whether an old original Samsung Galaxy S2 (i9100) car dock will work with the S4, assuming one could somehow shoehorn the S4 into it: Nope, It doesn't work. The S4 doesn't enter "Car Mode" as one would expect.
I didn't actually use a shoe horn - I took apart my old Galaxy S2 Car Dock and plugged the phone into the base once I had it separated from the holder.
I figure that Samsung either disabled the mode on the S4 or they changed the resistor value in the S4 so that it is different from the S2.
... or my S2 car dock is dead (unlikely).
It is frustrating that Samsung hasn't released a "proper" Car Dock for the S4 yet, like the kind they had for the S2. The one they do sell is a rip-off and a PITA to use with it's separate "charger" and "holder". There are a few vendors out there with "active" car docks for the S4, but I haven't tried any yet.
The S4 kernel was not configured with Car Dock mode enabled. Most cables have a 635k resistor for car dock mode and won't work on the S4. Only home dock mode is enabled and needs a 320k resistor (values might be different).

I keep setting it to remeber my settings and to have both music and phone going through the dock but when I get back in the car it only has music checked so when I answer a call it doesn't use the bluetooth to the dock

A little sporadic for me too. Although for the most part it works. What do you mean when you say "when I get back in the car"? Do you mean you:
1) Get in your car, start car and drive off, all the time with the N1 never leaving the dock.
2) Get in your car, start car, place phone it car dock...
3) Get in your car, place phone it car dock, start car....
I know it sounds pedantic but I suspect the method you use can effect how things end up. Especially considering how the power to the Car Dock usually is interrupted during ENG start. Furthermore I am not sure if the phone can or does sense that it has been placed in the car dock if the actual docking happens before you turn the IGN on. This is only speculative though.
So what I tend to do is method 2. I start my car first, to ensure power is going to the cradle during docking AND wont be interrupted. Then place the phone into the cradle. This seems to work all the time for me resulting in phone audio connecting.
Also for testing, you will have probably noticed the little BT notification it the top margin grows ears >BT< when it the phone is connected to something via BT. Unfortunately it does not differentiate between phone or media audio though. So you will have the same indication there for phone or media or both connections being active. To test your cradle placement technique is working reliably, disable the media audio pairing to the car dock for a couple of days. Then every time you dock the phone in the cradle the BT with ears appearing will confirm you successfully have phone audio connected.

That app would be no good for this problem. The Nexus One is not meant to be in Speakerphone mode when in the genuine google car dock. It is meant to be in BT phone audio mode. It is the car dock itself that needs to do the speakerphone bit with its inbuilt mic and speakers.
I have my dock connected to uninterupted power so it works even when the engine is off, starting, running.
I'll play with at what point I put it in for fun but I don't think that will matter.
I just hate it when I don't do it and someone calls and I have to call them back or scamble to rip the phone off the dock. Hopefully 2.2 will give us a sideways menu/phone/contacts list as well ;-)

I've heard that there is an official car dock coming which will switch the phone into car dock mode. Does anyone have any idea how this might be done? Someone on one of the other forums tried shorting some pins in the usb connector but without success.
Could it be through magnets like some other phones? Does anyone have any ideas about how the phone is signalled which mode it should be in?
I'm using an app to change modes at the moment, but it would be lovely if I could do it all in hardware.

can you tell me what app you use to change modes please? i've been trying to find it for ages now
I'm still not sure about how the modes are recognized yet, although I know it's done within the USB somehow, there are no magnetic switches in the Desire.
And for the apps, there are a few to choose from.
Nexus - CarHome.apk
EVO- NavPanel.apk
DeskClock.apk (there are a few different ones) for "HomeDock"
And there is an app to launch the 2 different apps manually; DockSimulator.apk.
You should be able to find all of the above in this forum, DockSimulator can be found in the market.
It's really frustating...
I've had a play around again with the data lines, but no matter what I do with them all I seem to be able to do is trigger PC mode. Some people have said that by wiggling the micro usb they can sometimes trigger the car mode. COuld it be something to do with the 5th pin on the micro usb connector?
I guess we may just have to wait until the official dock launches, and then try to reverse engineer it. I don't really like the look of it, as I don't want a suction mount and I'm very happy with the fixed Brodit cradle.
Using the dock simulator is a good second best, especially in conjunction with the free 'Car Dock' app available from the market. It seems to switch the phone into a mode where it never locks and the backlight is permanently on. It also switches on speakerphone mode by default, although I use a bluetooth kit instead.
Any further thoughts on where to look?

If You use a bluetooth kit I'm sure You can figure out the way to launch car dock mode once paired to Your bluetooth car device. I know for sure, that You can simulate car dock when the phone is charging using Locale.
As an update, I've found a great app on the market called 'Bluedock' which does exactly this. It triggers car dock mode when connected to a bluetooth headset (you can specify exactly which of the paired devices, so you it only triggers when in the car), and optionally when connected to power. Mine is set up so when it's in the charging cradle, and connected to the handsfree kit, it switches into car dock mode.
Well worth $1! The author also has written a free car dock replacement app also on the market which I'd also really recommend.

It does state that the NaviPanel is automatically activated when the phone is docked ...for my money it's dead expensive though.
Still listed as pre order on clove, i am guessing it will come out after the next desire update which will have the navigation software built in.

I have a current working setup in my car where I have a 30 pin splitter to usb and 3.5 mm cable to both charge and listen to music (pandora, apollo, play music). This method works just fine. But I was hoping that I could use a USB OTG and then just force audio through the USB OTG to the 30 pin ipod connection. Therefore I would no longer need to also have the 3.5 mm connected. Below are all the connnections I have in the car both current (working) and future (what I hope will work/but does not as of yet).
Basically I need a method to force analog audio through the micro USB of the GS3. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Current Solution Working:
Male 30 Pin Dock connector > Female 30 Pin split to Female USB/Female 3.5mm > 3.5 mm male-male to audio input and usb to microUSB to charge
(photo 1 > photo 2 > photo 3)
Due to this setup, I know that the audio going into the usb and 30 pin is in analog and not digital. Since it involves connecting to the analog 3.5 mm.
Therefore I was hoping I could force some dock mode or analog audio out through USB.

Ah, I wish it was that easy. I just tried it, but with car mode enabled the audio still plays through speaker. So it looks like that is a no go.
I just found this in the forums and going to see if this might work:

Or buy the infuse dock for $18 and an extension cable (and take it apart for the circuit board as I explain in one of the threads) and you are good to go.

So if I got a car deck with usb input I wouldn't be able to just connect the phone via usb and play music through it while charging?
Using my Samsung Infuse 4G Car dock.....i can play sounds through my car using the 3.5mm cable plugged into the back of the dock w/ it using just the usb connector to the phone. So somehow there should be a way to as sound is transferred though the usb port, tho it is prob something on the circuit board of the car dock that converts it. It dose put my Gs3 into car mode. Call's do not go through the the cable tho but to get anything to play you must goto Settings > Dock > Auto Output Mode (Checked). Hope maybe that helps you.
I had the same problem. Here is the solution go into settings go to dock its near the bottom then make sure you have audio output mode checked so it says use external speakers. When I do that I am able to use my cats speakers through my car dock to play the sound.

My car doesn't have bluetooth, so I have been looking for some sort of bluetooth device that will turn on and off with the car.
I don't want to use any type of bluetooth receiver since:
I'm already using my aux-in for my echo.
FM transmitter is also out since I'm switched to aux-in.
If I have the bluetooth receiver audio go nowhere, then I won't be able to hear my phone's GPS navigation.
I thought about bluetooth hands-free calling speakerphone devices, but the ones I've seen all use batteries, meaning it'll not turn off immediately when I turn off my car and will also probably need me to manually turn them on when I start my car. Anyone seen a batteryless version?
Are there any other bluetooth devices that run purely off usb power or off the car charger port?
I just tried the nonda zua smart charger that is suppose to connect to your phone when you turn it on. Only problem is that despite it showing up in the bluetooth device list, it doesn't seem to be a device that you can normally connect to. You have to install their app and the app somehow connects to it, even though the phone's bluetooth icon shows no active connections. Maybe the phone will only show a connection to devices it has supported profiles for. I can't even get tasker or android's smart lock to sense that the device is near.
Anything else out there? Is there a bluetooth input device that runs purely on usb? I have a selfie stick with a usb component that charges over usb and has an on/off switch, and I'm tempted to test if I can power it with the internal battery and have it turn on automatically when power is supplied. It's actually a bluetooth speaker that doesn't have a battery. No idea if it will auto-pair when usb power is on or if the lamp can be turned off.
Can't you use an NFC tag on your car mount? When you mount your phone it hits the NFC tag and since you use Tasker you can set it to do what you want when you touch the NFC tag.

I may not always mount my phone and it may just stay in my pocket. And I would need to remember to hit the NFC again when I leave my car to 'automatically' turn off the hotspot. I also sometimes forget to take my phone with me and was going to have the phone alert me when the car is off.

I'll look into that. I need it automatically connect to my phone without the need to install an app. I don't want to face the same issue as with the nonda car charger, which requires the app to be running constantly to connect and it somehow can connect without android showing a bluetooth connection to it.
I've decided against obdii adapter because I am unsure if android has a built-in profile to automatically connect to it without the aid of a third party app to constantly monitor bluetooth. And they are rather expensive, especially for the ones that are smart enough to go to sleep and not constantly be powered on and drain the car's battery.
There are some speakerphone adapters that don't use batteries so I'm going to try one of them and connect them to usb-powered speakers. Going from a Nexus 6P to a Pixel XL, I'm finding the speakers are now rather weak and adding external speakers will help with GPS navigation.
It seems to me the easiest thing to do would be to upgrade your car stereo. By the time you're done with all of these workarounds, it might be cheaper, too.
Either that or ditch the echo dot and use the phone to replace it's functionality. I'd go to an auto audio shop and see if they could install an ignition switch controlled power source running a proper Bluetooth to aux adapter and compare that to the cost of a new head unit.

Do they make car stereo units that can mix multiple sources like aux-in and bluetooth?
I've had a cheap ODBII scanner in multiple cars for years and never had a battery drain issue. I honestly can't remember if my phone auto connects to it or not, last time I tried to read from it I couldn't because the latest Android beta update broke the connection.

You're missing the point, android auto will do your music and satnav prompts over usb. No need for the echo dot at all.
