Samsung Knox is it the end of custom firmware bootloaders ect. - Galaxy S 4 General

I have to admit i've not bothered this year doing anything with my S4 just left it stock, but what about those that like to install custom firmwares ect, will this be your last Samsung device & if so what will you be considering next year, or have you already decided to get rid of your S4's now for something else?

Knox takes out part of the fun. Not just because of the warranty, but because of the increase risk
of an hard brick. Probably I'll revert to a more permissive platform.

Samsung Knox is probably just the beginning of the lock down.

I think that the xda comunity is to importatnt to lock down...the true inovations are always from XDA and later implemented in other devices. And not to forget about the leaking and beta testings.

The S4 has totally put me off Samsung to be honest.
I've had every Galaxy S released and been very pleased but in my opinion the S4 was a complete flop.
Now with all this KNOX crap and secure boot loaders I'm definitely not buying Samsung next year.
I will probably get a Sony device.

Samsung to roll out 4.3 in October

This has been known and posted for some time now. However, it does not mean that AT&T or Verizon will be getting the update that soon. Canadian S4s are slated to receive the update sometime in October, but I would be surprised to see AT&T roll it out any time this year. With a locked bootloader it will be better to get a hold of the Canadian or International update and let the Devs incorporate it into the MDL bootloaders. Maybe even safestrap can be updated to allow those types of hybrid ROMs on MF3?

Three possible ways to run 4.3 prior to the official ATT release:
1) Have an MDB/MDL phone and use loki.
2) Safestrap and hope the MF3 kernel is compatible.
3) SS adds kexec support.
I think the biggest reason is that the Samsung Smart Gear only runs on 4.3 so if they don't force the phone co. to allow the update then they will lose sales for the smart watch very fast
Samsung is trying to get the market before the IPhone releases their watch next year

Samsung doesn't have the ability to force AT&T or Verizon to do anything. It's actually the other way around. AT&T and Verizon are simply to big in the US and they are considered Samsung's "customer". With around 100 million + subscribers each, Samsung simply can not afford to "dictate" terms to them. Samsung will be more than content to profit from the Gear sales that will accompany the Note 3 sales for the time being. Eventually, 4.3 will roll out to AT&T and Verizon S4s, but I wouldn't bet on it being anytime before Q2 of next year. Of course, it is just speculation.

Yes I mentioned Att in there...but I didn't specifically say Att was the only one that would be delayed...I said the carrier variants will be delayed, granted yours won't be delayed as long since they don't have to throw a new boot loader in it will still very likely be delayed so they can rebloat it and test it them self before releasing it to their customers.
And yep...a flash able version will soon be available for us. Hopefully its compatible with the mf3 kernel so those on safe strap can enjoy it too

But you also lost all the software features that go along with getting an S4. I personally think that the google play versions of the HTC One and S4 are not worth it because you lose the features that make those phones unique.

Sure I don't have the Samsung software, but I can load a Samsung Rom if I choose to do so. Also this version of the S4 is more compatible with Linux than the Samsung S3 is. I can plug it into my laptop, drag and drop to and from the device. Wasn't able to do so easily with the S3.
Fellow Canadians,
1. Do you think Samsung will include a patch that will lock the bootlader when they roll out JB 4.3 ?
I'm asking because unlike in the U.S, the Canadian S4 has an unlocked bootloader
Well, unless it was AT&T who was the driver behind the locked bootloader in the USA ....
2. if I uncheck "auto-update", am I safe ?
(because if I root before the rollout, I dont want to lose my root

Why I will never buy samsung galaxy again

Ok, as noticed in last news samsung published the source code of the Galaxy S4 and the "Samsung Knox".
That mean, that probably we WILL NEVER able to flash custom roms.
That move its so ugly and to make money on us.
From one hand they published the "Samsung Knox" and full protective system that mean that we cant do anything with the source code without lose the warranty.
And the other hand samsung published the Galaxy S4 source code.
On the Downloading Mode new line appeared - "Warranty Bit" - that the only thing he does is to tell to our labs that we dont have warranty,
in other words 0 = You can fix it, warranty man. 1 = No. we want's that man on our eyes, and our eys on his money.
SAMSUNG IN MORE COUPLE YEARS GONNA BE LIKE APPLE - A FULL CLOSED PROTECTED SYSTEM.
And i didnt starting talking about all the suspicious things that's hint on Tracking.

Sadly closed systems are better in quality. I know people won't agree specially here but my iPhone had much nicer and stable apps. My S4 is great to but I can imagine with more close system comes other benefits. Is devs were to develop specifically for the Galaxy I'm sure it would raise the quality.

It boils down to this. You're a thief and you've been a thief for quite some time. You're committing theft of service.
The warranty bit are direct responses to things like the brick bug on the Galaxy S2; if the user would have never rooted their phones and installed custom recoveries, it would have never been discovered or triggered. But many people destroyed their eMMCs.
I think people don't fully understand the possible consequences of things like rooting or flashing a new kernel, you can literally fry your components. On the i9305 we had people who fried their touchscreens controllers because they flashed the wrong firmware from the n710X.
In the end the cost ends up with the manufacturer.
If you decide to take control over your hardware, then accept the consequences of it. That includes warranty getting void. This whole rationale of people expecting service after they possibly screw up their devices is insanely crooked.
Knox is an entreprise solution and I think the warranty void is about the warranty that your phones data security is no longer guaranteed because the device has been tempered with. It has nothing to do with the warranty itself.

Which people don't seem to understand. Knox is one thing, the warranty bit has existed since the Galaxy S2. That TriangleAway and other methods were able to circumvent this was just luck / incompetence from the manufacturers' side;

This is what annoys me. I was perfectly happy with the S4 as it was when released (hence I bought it). However with the way KNOX affects things, I would have bought something else.
Ah well, easy enough to sell the S4 and get the N5 once it's released.
Thank goodness for insurance!
Whats funny?
Some people care about KNOX and their warranty, when even without KNOX flashing or customizing your phone will void your warranty.
Thats why every rom thread starts with do/flash it with your own risk or sometimes flashing this will VOID your warranty.

Pff yeah..To have a phone with powerful hardware but with slow as f*ck software 'cause of Samsung's crapware+poorly customized Touchwiz.
If you will use your brains, and will read about it a lot you won't damage your device such easily. And I wonder how such "beginner" like me which is using Android "only" for 7 months didn't damage device, didn't burn CPU/GPU, even if I was overclocking it and rooting when I was absolutely "noob"
But yes, of course if my device will die 'cause of SDS Samsung will say that it's dead 'cause of my fault not their but actually I am reading a lot about Android things and still improve but it's fact that very little people know about SDS in my country and they probably won't believe me if I will tell them about SDS.

If you got a new one that's also affected by the bad batch, then just get another replacement.
There's no point crippling the phone when you can get it exchanged for free... Also the fact that lowering the CPU frequency will not help a faulty battery.

Hmm.. the biggest advantage, from my point of view, of nexus devices are, they'll rather have support for upcoming OSs such as Ubuntu, Mozilla etc. because of AOSP(drivers etc.). Samsung/HTC/Sony on the other side have always their customized Android OS, which is also a good thing because they have to be absolutely stable.
My SHV-E330S(same as I9506) has not less mods than my old S2. I would say, it has much more mods than S2.
The only difference - you wait when someone will do this for you, while i do it by myself.
Actually, i don't see what is interesting in using already made custom ROM which has be made in someone's specific taste.
Today, there are much more devices than before. Thus, concentration of developers for particular device is less and less. If you want to get something interesting for particular device, you have to become one of such developers.
Otherwise, just get Nexus - it already has naked Android which most people here is looking for.
The only thing i miss for my I9506 is the kernel developement. But if you think better why would you OC the Krait 400?Isn`t the fastest CPU avalaible on the market?A kernel with udervoltage feature enabled would be perfect. For the rest...if you have root you can make it all by yourself. There are a lot of tutorials on the market explaining how you can port a custom ROM and a lot of mods and themes ar compatible for this phone from I9505 thread and Note 3.For short...i`m very satisfied with my I9506.Way faster and less battery draining than I9505.I have them both!
If no-one is porting a rom from either the Xperia Z1, or from the Note 3 wich at least have the same CPU, i will probably look into how to do this myself.. I bought the i9506 yesterday and thought there would be a custom rom allready, but no.. My old Optimus 4X HD is still in use, cause i really hate the Samsung menu system!

Yes, I agree on this also.
I had an S3 before and I have to say that Devs were going crazy making new Roms/Tweaks and kernels almost every day!
I thought the GS4 would be even more crazier but turns out that it isn't. Should've got that Nexus 5 :|

[Descussion] People Leave s4?

after everyone saw galaxy s5. all people are disappointed for it.
and they say it will let Samsung.
So, do you think people (especially developers) will leave s4 to get htc m8 and lg g3 and others?.
is it the end of Sammy?
Thanks in advance.
Regards.
I use long time Galaxy phones 2/3/4 and nexus phones 1/2/3/4/5 but I stop now with Samsung devices , the S5 is a joke. We are for sure support S5 in the future but I am will not work on it. Nexus is and will be the best

and knox will be another reason not to buy

I believe there will be two versions of this phone. The one announced, and then a metal one further down the road with a new snapdragon processor...
i agree. guys the s5 is joke it is sucks. but i think the people will stay developing on s series and other Galaxys that so good news thanks for all developers on Samsung devices, for that i will skip htc one and just get the s4.

we believe that will be more version but only with other processor (exynos or snapdragon ect.)
but the device will stay the same. and that sad for Samsung lovers coz we expected more from Sammy.
but no problem as there are always s4 note 3 and others.

No S5 for me. I don't like the size of the S4 but I have to live with it it's a great phone otherwise. S5 looks even bigger than S4 so no way. May as well just have a tablet with phone facilities.

I really thought they would get rid of plastic on this one... im keeping my s4... and in the even there is nothing else good on the market by the time my GS4 dies, I would go for nexus... cheaper, better, no bloat GOOD

Let's see what the Nexus 6 brings us.. as know will be taking over your phone and Samsung will be trying to eliminate every way to mod your device a little, I'm out
Me Gusta!
Here is another reason. 661 Euro. Ready to spend this amount of money?

S4 was basically the S3 with a few tweaks and upgrades.

Actually, I dont care about the S5.
After I had 2 LG-devices, I thought I go the mainstream and follow Samsung.
I actually can not complain about my S4. It is working.
But the implemented Samsung features like airview, airfart and air-whatever are poorly implemented and useless for me.
I am disappointed by Samsung doesn't care of the Exynos-version (which I have) and I understand that the devs dont care either Samsung continues their developer hostile strategy.
Not sure what comes next.
Due to lack of financial resources, I will stick with my phone... but as soon as I have more money left over again, I might switch to Sony or Huawei or Oppo (I guess).
After the show off S5 at MWC 2014, It's the same. I don know since Galaxy S4, all Galaxy series is almost same.
Why I need to go to S5?
Just only for fingerprint scanner or heart beat scanner?
Just icon changed and extra hardware with boring and 18th century look :3
M happy with my s4 + I will think to other manufacturer if I got bored from s4.
