Which root method to use? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hi. Forgive me if I am in the wrong section. I want to door my Rogers one x. I went to the Rogers one x compilation and could not find the right one. My firmware is 3.17.631.2. Can I use the root method listed for 3.18? I do not want to mess things up. I previously used Hassoons toolkit to unlock the boot loader. Now when I use it to install tarp, I do not think it recognizes my phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Think you.

I meant twrp.

All you need to do is go to htcdev and unlock your bootloader there, then you can flash TWRP 2.6, and flash a custom ROM, smooth sailing!

I have already unlocked my bootloader previously. It is flashing twrp that I am having problems with.

I had downloaded a twrp zip file and unzipped it as well as an SU file. From there I am unsure how to flash them onto my phone. I did plug my phone into my PC and tried to locate the internal SD but could not. If you could give me any clearer directions, that would be great. Thank you.

I am usually pretty good at following instructions. I just rerooted my N7 following the latest updates. But this one x has me stumped thus far.

Well, I went to Team Win's website and downloaded TWRP and Goo Manager. I now have tampered status and have installed twrp through GooManager but have yet to find it on my device. Sometimes it is a struggle.

I have success!

I know you were able to install TWRP using Goo Manager. But the proper way to install using your PC, would be using fastboot, with the command:
fastboot flash recovery filename.img
Where "filename" is the actual name of the recovery .img file.

Another thing to note, you don't need to unzip the recovery zip file.

I'm rooted I think on 2.3.3 but I'm not???

I have no idea what happened I ran the new revolutionary tool on my wife's evo. The phone when I go to the bootloader screen it says revolutionary 2.15 hboot ect. S-off. I tried running terminal but it says access denied. When I ran the tool it went through but I forgot to flash the recovery. What do I do can someone point me in the right direction. Thanks

Is your superuser working? From what I understand using the terminal requires you to use su key (superuser)
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Finish the steps provided with revolutionary, flash recovery, then either flash a custom rom or the Su files.
No I tried putting su in and it said access denied.

If it is S-Off then get AmonRa as a PC36IMG.zip and flash recovery through the bootloader. Check my signature for a link. Directions in the OP.
Then flash a rooted ROM, stock or whichever ROM you want. Or else I think that you can flash a Superuser.zip in recovery mode. I have never done so, because I like flashing ROMs and kernels

So download that and rename it then flash and then i can flash over any rom right
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
When you download the PC36IMG.zip from Amon_RA it will downlaod as PC36IMG.zip. So you don't have to rename it. Keep it on the root of your sd card and go into your bootloader and let it scan for the zip. When asked to update select yes and when it ask to reboot just select no. Go into your new recovery and flash a rom or you can flash the superuser from the recovery. That last part is up to you.
I think I got it.

Can't Root

I've been using the guide for preparing my One X for ROMs, but I can't get the root tool to root my phone. When I launch the promt, it shows a list of a few items and it says failure across them all and says permission denied.
What can I do to get my phone to root?

I havent updated that guide in a while. Heres what I suggest you do:
1. Update to the latest official software (1.85) if you arent already on it, assuming you are on AT&T
2. Root using this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709424
3. Unlock the bootloader using this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1734558
5. Flash TWRP using this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1777773
6. Install whatever custom ROMs you want
Thanks for being so fast! I'll give it a try tonight and let you know how it goes!

This tool is still coded to install ClockworkMod Recovery so in order to use it you will need to right click the install.bat and click edit. Change line 7 to: fastboot.exe flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.0-evita.img
Or after you unlock your bootloader, download GooManager from the market and after you open the app press menu and hit Install OpenRecoveryScript and it will install TWRP for you.
I am so confused by the thread in your third post on unlocking the bootloader. I can't figure out how to do it. Where do I get the Unlock_Code.bin file without going to HTCDEV.com?

Clockwork touch recovery

I have cwm re overly installed. I flashed the touch version, but it doesn't stick. What's wrong?

Did you use fastboot boot recovery path to recovery instead of fastboot flash recovery path to recovery?

It was a downloaded zip file. I flashed it thru recovery have do.e it this was on other pho.es without problem.

It might be because we lack s off, I don't know, but can you try using fastboot and see if that works? There are guides about this in the dev section
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
did you get it--
Tried every suggestion I could find. It won't stick after reboot
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using xda premium
if you want to go thru exact steps for cwm we can, but you need adb/fastboot working on your pc, and knowing how to use them. I won't have time tonite for a tutorial on that, but plenty of info out there.
also on phone make sure under settings/power fastboot is unchecked. if you are going to use fastboot to flash cwm you need usb debugging check under settings/dev options
easier way is to flash twrp recovery
their thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677670
mainly just download goo mananger from play store
open it
tap on menu, mine is the 3 dots
tap on Install OpenRecoveryScript
follow directions
with twrp you can flash radios and most roms without flashing kernel thru fastboot
always have a nandroid and sdcard bu before doing these things
Yes, I've done that already uh sing hassoons tool kit. Probably just stick with reg cwm. Not on recovery much anyways. Have used cwm for a couple years. I tried the twrp rec. For a few minutes.

don't use the toolkit
fastboot the 5.8.3.1 image thru command terminal window
do you use fastboot

Hi I have used the tool kit, but some of the recoveries there don't work. I found this file online after searching and it does work with my HTC One S. This is touch recovery, pretty good, actually.
You can just flash the .img file through:
a) adb command(fastboot), might be faster for you.
or
b) you can put this file(extract it first) into the "data" folder of the tool kit, but you will have to edit bat file to be able to integrate your new .img file with the UI. I did this way.
This is the link where I got the above recovery. http://www.modaco.com/topic/353006-...ch-recovery-for-the-htc-one-s-stock-download/
This link also have stock .img you might need in the future. I tried both the recovery and stock files, they both worked well.
See if this will help you out.

Goin from cwm to twrp

Do I just install twrp over cwm? I'm not sure how this works.. and I'm having trouble finding twrp.
Any help is appreciated
Thanks

Not sure wher you are looking, because most everything you will ever need can be easily found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Also, you can install TWRP by getting goomanager from the Play Store.

If you are rooted, go and download goomanager from the play store and use it to flash TWRP. Much quicker and easier than doing it through fastboot.

Slim1991 did just that and it worked, despite having tried to install the Endeavor recovery previously (I'm surprised that it worked). Of course, there is no way you would no that, since he cross posted to another thread:

No root after installing a stock rom

First of all I am new to all of this, but I recently flashed turge's new sense 5 stock Rom. The Rom is nice but I want to go back to my old cleanrom 6.5. But now it seems my phone is not rooted. I can get into bootloader and it still says 'unlocked' but I can't get my computer to recognize my phone via fastboot usb.
You can just install root, I'm on the same ROM and rooting it was easy. Download Superuser from Play Store, open it, it'll prompt you to update binaries, choose TWRP/CWM method. It'll do the rest for you.

I tried that but superuser gives me a prompt about the binaries and that 'this is a problem'. I did not check the md5, the Rom seems to be working well but eventually I would want to get back on a rooted Rom but like I said in another post, I'm not sure how i lost access to fastboot usb. Thanks for the help.

I'll try this, but how could I regain fastboot usb in order to go back to a rooted Rom.
You probably just need to sort your drivers out.
