Maps wants to access what? - Security Discussion

So i have a pending update for Maps for my android. Why is it pending? because it wants new permissions. It wants permission to access my contacts. Why does it need to access my contacts all of the sudden?
Also, Another app, a white noise generator wanted the same permission. I have removed that app cause i saw no need for it to access that information.
(also, why is there a checkbox for "Is this a question" if the forum is going to ***** at me for it not being a Q&A forum?)

I believe its because it wants to mix the Latitude app, the Navigation and the Maps all in one. That and I think Google wants to make people use Google Plus as well.

I've found that now ALL google apps want access to contact information. I am not updating any of them because i dont see why it needs legitimate access to that personal information.

Mmm keep your software outdated certainly will not help you to have a secure system, google probably already has all your contacts (sync,mail,etc..) I don't think he would need to steal them.
Rather, you should ask if there is a method to deny these permissions without unistalling the app, considering that the smartphone is your, like the contacts...

How to remove a dodgy app from Market purchased apps?

Hi guys, this is an unusual and embarrassing one, so I hope.
Back in a day I installed a dodgy app (not from Market, duh) not knowing about it.
I want to upgrade/purchase that app as it is on the Market now, but there is no way of doing it. When I try to update, it states something along the lines of: "You have not purchased ..." message, but it is visible as "Installed".
I can not delete that app from my history of apps associated with my account
and there is no way of actually purchasing it.
What to do?
Contact app developer, or Google Play team or is there a way of doing it in some other way.
Thanks!

life without gapps aka google apps

Moderators PLEASE READ THIS THREAD BEFORE DELETING IT LIKE YOU DID THE LAST ONE
I did a couple of different searches on this board, looking for an alternative to gapps aka google apps. What viable alternatives to the google play store are there? google hangouts and google mail? I came across a thread discussion nogapps and the blank store that comes with it, but i'm not overly convinced that it lacks google's data mining processes.
I am not asking for sites that provide "pirated software" as I already know where to get that. I am asking for a "store" where I can search various phrases, and get a good return without those apps being relinked to google play store.
Have you tried the Amazon App Store? (Yes, they have Android apps)
Am I correct in assuming you are looking for a market that is completely separate from Google's servers? If privacy is your concern, you should know that all services that are provided for "free" employ some sort of data mining, because that is how they can afford to keep those services running. Since Google Play is the largest repository for Android apps, you would be hard pressed to find another service that hosts all of the same .apks, as that would seem redundant.
There simply is no viable alternative to the Play Store.
You can get alternatives, but they won't be nearly as good.
As for the rest of the gapps there are plenty of alternatives that are just fine or better.
Why are you so against gapps though? Washington doesn't care what apps you use.

Even if the app doesn't mine your data, your ISP still does ...
plenty
well there are plenty stores available on internet. if you are on android 4.1 and rooted then you can install NOKIA app store. well its tricky to use, you can find a apk on xda. when you install it just install aptitode market from there, though aptitode can be installed alone too. you can find almost all apps. but still google holds android that will mean they will have the maximum apps and secure and most updated apps. even developers always put latest updated apps on play store first. well i used wildfire which has no gpu so cpu has to do work for most of operations which makes slow and to overcome the low space on that phone i sometime skip the gapps. it depends if you want surveillance free android then go for other market apps.:silly:..google even know when you are walking. i read this on xda somewhere.
choice is yours.
100s of stores are available nowadays...

A way to synchronize (not backup/restore) my contacts and calendars on the Internet (Mega, Dropbox, whatever...) to be shared among other devices. This is bare minimum.
Then, if I could also synchronize (again, not backup/restore)some system stuff like WiFi passwords, call logs, SMS/MMS, instant messaging stuff and some application settings, this would be an extra great feature.
Can you do it without GApps? If you know how to, please share!
I don't know if this idea will benefit the app devs. Getting rid of the play store is like taking away one of their BIGGEST market place. What do you think?
People wouldnt feel the need to seek alternatives if Google wasnt so hardcore with it
Like dam, is it really even reasonable to keep location tracking in the background 24/7 and 15 different types of loggers at once? You'd think those morons would understand how large of a percentage of their would-be-users would actually use more of their services if they didnt chose to make it an all or nothing affair. I literally use only the playstore, and because of whats needed for that I go ahead and utilize the sync. I would definitely be open to gmail, g+, etc. if they werent so retarted with it. Rant over.

I think more about my privacy than the app business.
I wish in could use something like CM with some synchronizing mechanism.
Unluckily for me I have a non-dumb-phone, a netbook and a desktop PC.
I use all three for work and would need some synchonization mechanism for calls, SMS and other stuff.
Do you have a suggestion in this direction?
I have read the opening post. So please remember that.
However, this kind of question will always lead to warez sites.... As it already has. And will continue to. And another thread asking same thing will lead to warez app responses yet again.
Google play store and Amazon are really the only ones that are legit and most other sites offer cracked versions of paid apps.
Obviously a website dedicated to Development and developers will not approve of most of the recommendations here, which I have deleted.
Please don't open another one of these threads. There's been enough answers provided already. So this thread is closed.
Thanks for understanding,

How to fully disable Android Device Manager ?

Greetings.
as you know, even if we disable "android device manager" from settings->security->device administrators, it still can be enabled from https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager "enable lock & erase"
from one side it is good, but from other side it is bad - i don't want that my phone can be remotely erased by google
this functionality definitely resides in gmscore.apk
of course, we can just kill all google services, but we loose too much.
so : probably someone from devs here already know answer what to patch in gmscore to disable this behavior ?
with latest gmscore update ( 6.1.74 (1511752-038) ) the only message i can see, when pushing "enable lock and erase" :
GCM message com.google.android.gms 0:1414056810224892%136ddda63e77bab2

I can't seem to find that service, heck I can't even find gmscore.apk
When I use find / -name gmscore.apk in terminal nothing came up.
Running 4.4.2 on galaxy S5, google framework 4.4.2-940549
Any ideas?
I would really not want my device wiped If my google account was compromised (really only have it for android)
as i remember, this service because build into gmscore from 4.4.4 and enabling downloading some external application.
can be wrong, though.
damn it google!
This is really frustrating. I can't find a way to disable it and I can't find 'com.google.android.gms.mdm.services.GcmReceiverService'.
This a serious security flaw, let me explain why.... I have a company account on my phone, just for the purpose of receiving gmail, and that's very important to me. This also means this account can access my phone through android device manager. So, anyone that can log in to firm's gmail can lock and erase my phone and there's no way to disable it. Best I could do was turn off location reporting and hide my phone from showing in device list. However, anyone that can log in to this account, can also change this in settings and unhide it, enable lock and erase, make it ring and.... well, lock and erase it.
This is very worrying when you have a lot of people with access to gmail account that you also have on your phone. ATM only solution I see is to remove account on my phone and search for other email app.
Anyone knows how one could deal with this and still use gmail app?

Instead of a problem with ADM, this sounds like a massive security issue on your company's side. I don't know why your company need to share the same email account, but the more people who have access, the more likely someone will spill the beans. If I am you, getting my phone wiped will the least of my worries.

This dosent appear to be working, as after I disable all the above services, clicked on "enable lock and erase" from my google account it reactivated said services. So which service is activating and overriding the services I disabled?
Im running Android 4.4.2(goldeneye rom, Googymax kernal) on a Samsung i9505, I use Xprivacy, Android firewall, and Appmaster(app uninstaller & autostart manager)
Trying to secure an oem samsung Rom from google and its services while still using all the factory apps is going to be like herding cats...
It's similar to going to the pool and expecting to swim but not getting wet.
If you use Google apps and use the accounts feature of Android then you are going to have Google play services and other Google services running, and sadly you can stop them all you want they update and restart themselves regularly.
You just can't get away from Google, if you still use Google play, the Google mail app, Google voice search, Google account verifier, Google download manager, Google hangouts, Google plus or the host of other Google services and apps that a baked into your rom.
All you will do in find yourself with a lot of force closes from apps, and less hair more cats.
What @Cyclu said was the right way. there are several services and receivers that have "mdm" , probably what you could do is use the search function in the app while viewing the services for GooglePlayServices. at the top of the screen, click menu, toggle full, (full/short option) then tap the magnifying glass, then the search box and type "mdm" , then do the same thing under the receivers section
This is so annoying. Can you imagine disabling admin on the phone, knowing that after reading the description in that area of the settings that it cannot be used to wipe the phone? Then someone testing it to prove it and they click "Enable" and wipe the phone? Know how dangerous that is? My phone is an S5 mini, stock firmware and rooted with SuperSU. What can I do to just prevent admin mode being enabled? I want to be able to track my phone's location but I do NOT want my phone able to be remotely wiped by anyone including myself, remotely.
I tried all. Looks like there is no way to disable ADM. Even if u disable corresponding service for ADM still when u restart that service gets re-enables it self again. Had any got a solution to disable this crappy android device manager fully?? thx in advance.
Forgive me, but this thread is just pathetic. If you have Gapps, your device is not yours. It is Google's. Period. If you can't live without hangouts and similar garbage, then enjoy them, but stop *****ing about remote wipe. You can't be half-pregnant. By the way, remote wipe is not the worse thing that could happen to you. Anything could be silently installed on "your" phone, even if you somehow disable ADM. It could be done through Google play and google services framework. Not to mention thar google analytics record everything about your activities and gsf regularly reports the same "home" i.e Google.
To gmail at work guy: if you can't use another client to access your work gmail, get a separate feature phone.
even "android = google" ? much less gapps , eh ?

Android, unlike Gapps, is open source. So, you can get under the hood and clean lots of things.

Remove COVID-19 contact tracing

If you go into settings and search for 'covid', you'll see settings implying that contact tracing functionality is installed.
How far does it go? It needs bluetooth but will it enable bluetooth regardless if you enable your antenna or not?
Will it show your bluetooth to be on or not?
I don't need answers to these questions. I want to remove this stuff from my phone.
My understanding is that the functionality was installed 'as a part of' and 'in an update of' Google Play-Services.
To remove it, I guess we would need a modified Google Play-Services package
or
remove Google Play-Services altogether.
I don't know to what lengths Google Play-Services is required by OxygenOS or other distros for that matter.
Google Apps won't work anymore without it. That definitely suck for Translate and Maps but I guess there are alternatives for that.
Google bought Waze. I wonder if Waze needs Google Play-Services..
I never was a fan of custom ROMs and rooting. I was perfectly happy with OxygenOS (OnePlus 7).
Now I really don't care, I want this garbage off my phone. Kr,

I am interested in this approach, as Aurora Store isn't able to fully replace google play at this time (no app purchasing)
So I have 2. questions to the community at large:
Would OpenGapps be the way forward? would this prevent googleplayserevices from be update by google thus preventing unauthorised/non-consented changes that facilitate state-level tracking.
And regard9ing the existing google services is there anyway to disable the covid19 toast notification appearing everytime time you enabled/disable bluetooth and or gps. The xposed module 'EnhancedToast' is able to do this, but only works on Andoird 6/7 or below.

Covid-19 contact tracing requires installing an app, if you, yourself, the user, have not installed some form of Covid-19 contact tracing app, then you "should" be in the clear unless you somehow agreed to/allowed/gave permission to something without knowing what you were agreeing to/allowing/giving permission to .

The only way to get rid of it is to delete Google Play Services. That's how they snuck it in. On Android Pie it's simple. Just debloat via ADB using pm list packages prompt and voila! it's gone. On Android 10 it works the same EXCEPT none of the google apps, firefox, instacart, or anything like that will WORK. So you can de-google all you want - they've baked it into everything. It's something I'm struggling with now since I was forced to upgrade.

com.google.android.syncadapters.contacts - safe to remove?

Some of you will be tempted to reply in a rude and arrogant way and say something "this app is syncing contacts, bla-bla", but let's all take a breath of air and focus on the reason why i am asking: many apps can have misleading names.
So, as I do not know that this app is doing precisely, I would like to know in what way removing it would impact my phone and my contacts list. Is this app ONLY syncing contacts with my google account, or it has other functionalities too? Because I prefer to keep my contacts on the phone, not on the google account and also I don't use gmail anymore, except as the google account for android.
On my phone there are two more contacts-related apps: com.oneplus.contacts (called Contacts) and com.android.providers.contacts (Called Contacts Storage), which I assume are in charge with contacts list storage.
So, bottom line, what that app com.google.android.syncadapters.contacts does and how would it impact my phone if I remove it?
Thanks.

Almost the same question was asked some time ago in Reddit, here : (com.google.android.syncadapters.contacts included)
https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/feplos/is_it_safe_or_beneficial_to_remove_the_following/
Ok...We know "com.google.android.syncadapters.contacts" definitely concerns the Google Contacts sync. But the problem is: We do not know for sure if it is related to any other Google application
_ Google, perhaps using "scripts", interconnects applications.I mean, you delete one application and there is a problem with other applications. For example, there may be a problem with Google Photos,Google Calendar & more Google apps, maybe even with Log in & Google account (?)....Really IDK
Some phone manufacturers are adding their app with different package name, such as "com". Maybe this application, apart from the synchronization, is even related to other Google apps...So, probably no one knows for sure "100%" the answer in this question...
_ But If you want, you can "delete" this app, with this way (of course first take back up your data, & your contacts mainly). This "deletes" the application for the user.If you delete an app by mistake, you can bring it back simply performing "factory reset" in your device(ofcourse, data is deleted as you know)...
It is the safest method, without the need for root, only via ADB...
https://beebom.com/how-remove-bloatware-android-without-root/
_ And this list is also interesting, with oneplus bloatware & Google Bloatware on OnePlus devices & OOS : https://technastic.com/oneplus-bloatware-list-oxygen-os-debloater/
("com.google.android.syncadapters.contacts" is not mentioned in this list)
The "com.google.android.syncadapters.contacts" is on the route : /system/product/app/GoogleContactsSyncAdapter/GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk
Yes correctly, the "com.android.providers.contacts" is the "contacts list storage" in : /data/app/com.android.providers.contacts-xxxxxxSNxxxxxxx-NxxDxQ==/base.apk
and "com.oneplus.contacts" - called as "Contacts" in : /system/priv-app/Contacts/Contacts.apk

Thank you for your complex answer. It almost makes me switch to LineageOS (I had it before on my huawei phone, but i got seduced by OOS, so i found it hard to listen to the voice of reason :cyclops.
What mainly concerns me about all this "bloatware lists" is they are mainly a list of apps, no description whatsoever. Is basically asking one to trust that list blindly. I feel uncomfortable with that. So, I am trying to know at least the minimum about what an app does before taking it down. What one may consider bloatware, I may see it as a desired feature.
And you are correct, most users here on XDA are great people, however it happened that I've seen some answers which I didn't approve. Never happened to me so far though...
I guess I won't take down com.google.android.syncadapters.contacts . If I want to walk that route, I'll switch to Lineage.

I looked over the app. There are two main concerns here:
1. app requires a lot of permissions (understandable, due to the nature of the app)
2. app is not open source. Combined with the previous point, it gives a slight sense of incertitude. For such intrusive apps, I prefer fully transparent ones. And although I am not qualified enough to fully inspect an app's code, there are other people which do it and then they share their thoughts about.
