[Q] Major problems trying to root & install CWM. - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Okay so my friend just bought my old T959V from me last night & the funny thing is he knows that TWiz is not where it's at, anyway he wants me to root & install CWM and a custom ROM. I ran into a few problems last night - I factory reset it to have a fresh start and once it booted back up the Wi-Fi wouldn't connect it would just hang at obtaining IP address. So I ignored it and tried connecting it to the computer to use the one click method, it worked but I can't grant anything permission because Wi-Fi won't connect so I can't download anything like root checker for example. Though I can still see the superuser app. Now for installing CWM, seeing as most of these threads for this phone are from 2010 & 2011 I've had a tough time finding a CWM recovery for this phone. EDIT: I managed to get some type of CWM running it's all red but whenever I try to wipe data/ factory reset/wipe cache & dalvik cache, I go to install zip from SD card selecting the ROM I transferred from my PC it says "install aborted." Does this everytime. I have a Nexus 4 running PA 3.99 RC1 & I don't remember Samsung phones being this difficult to get a custom ROM running on it. . Oh and I also tried Odin which wouldn't even detect his phone with the proper drivers installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I might suggest that you use Heimdall to one-click back to stock Gingerbread. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953878&postcount=2
After that, and while you still have Heimdall running, you can flash AntonX's Basic With A Twist Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25115050&postcount=1
At this point you'll have rooted GB with CWM recovery.
You can go from there.

Okay so now I have all the files downloaded but once i plug it into my computer it says USB device not recognized. ODIN wont detect it either, it keeps going into that red CWM recovery. That's the only issue, the CPU won't pick up the phone.

Under advanced options, isn't there a reboot download?
Try a different port & cable.

[Q] CWM Works but when flashing a Rom device hangs

I just tried all the tips around here before I create this thread but honestly i could not sort out my issue...
I rooted & installed CWM final without any issues on my SGS4G...then I could Access the Zip rom & flash it via CWM (I even checked the device Mounts & Unmounts) every thing goes fine till it shows a message "Install completed from SD card" but when i reboot it keeps hanging on the Logo (GALAXY S 4G - SAMSUNG) it never pass from that Logo, i also tried with many latest roms such as Blackice, Audiophile & bionix but the same issue
Then i used to load a rom Via Odin (2.2.1 ) then tried the above process nearly 15 times
someone could pointout me where do i make a mistake & what should i need to confirm further more from above process?

which rom are u flashing from????
after the initial flash, try going to the advanced menu, and reboot recovery. Then wipe everything again, check mounts, and reboot. give that a shot. If you are flashing icbinb, you need to enable voodoo lagfix in CWM and reboot recovery before rebooting the phone.
are you on orange CWM, or red CWM?
Moved to proper forum.

[Q] CWM Data Wipe/Factory Reset gets stuck on formatting SD card

I waited 2 nights to register so I could wade through fixes and tips and have seem to come up with little to nothing. I have CWM flashed on my phone through ROM Manager with the recovery file replaced in the system/bin and the update zip in the root of the SD card.
When I access CWM and click on Wipe Data/Factory reset it breezes through the first few steps pretty quickly and then gives me this error:
E: format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
It continues past this and then goes on to "formatting sd_card" and then just freezes. I left it on for 30mins and there was absolutely no progress. I've tried battery pulls and re-attempting the wipe with the same result. Have re-flashed CWM, ODIN'ed back to stock, etc etc and still run into the same snag. I'm beyond frustrated because since it never gets past this part I can't install the custom ROM I'm eying and it wipes enough data to have to ODIN every single time and re-root all over again. Just to be clear this error is NOT popping up on bootup but only during Data Wipe/Factory Reset and the only way out of the freeze is to do a battery pull which results in a soft brick.
If it helps any here is what I did prior to ever having run into this problem.
Rooted with SuperOneClick V.2.3.3
Installed ROM Manager
Installed RootBrowser Lite
Downloaded recovery and update zip
Placed both into root of SD card
Used RootBrowser Lite to move recovery file into system/bin
Booted into recovery mode
Attempted to Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Ran into snag on first try and every try thereafter
Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong, how to fix it or a workaround?
If possible a very detailed walk through would be appreciated as this is my first ROM flashing. Your help is greatly appreciated!

No, actually, I didn't. I haven't seen a guide point it out or a video that went through this step. Lemme' give this a shot and see if that helps with the problem I'm running into Thanks for the quick response, hoping this is what I was missing!

Unfortunately this didn't seem to fix my problem. Still encountering:
E:format_volume: make_ext4fs failed on /dev/block/mmblk0p2
Formatting /sdcard/ .android_secure...
And frozen again -_- It's bad enough that the sidekick sucks as stock (took me this long to finally want to do something about it) and that it's being difficult and resisting change.
Hmmm was your phone stock before you did anything to it? Or did you get the phone used or something?
My advice would be Odin to stock and start over try redownloading the recovery.zip to make sure it wasn't a bad download. And try again go slow and tripple check to make sure your following the instructions word for word. I've messed them up a few times cuz I got cocky but I got everything down from doing it so much and checking my work. The first time I rooted my sk4g I did it with adb not superoneclick and it was my first android phone it took me 2 hours of reading and following steps perfectly.

go back to stock with odin,
Then root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100513
Flash cwm http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124453
And them flash this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663622 (dont freak out with the first boot with this kernel let it convert the partitions to ext4 and a loud voice will tell you what is going on)
Ive had that problem from flashing recovery from rom manager, and when it comes up i just return to stock. try to save and remove the update.zip from the sd card and see if you can get into recovery again and just flash the kernel(if cwm come up)

[Q] Infuse 4G Bricked

Hi, i'm a relative noob to rooting and rom flashing but i know the basics and have successfully installed cyanogen on other phones and devices in the past. So essentially I am trying to install jellybean on my infuse 4g (on rogers). I begun with this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776129) but and gotten stuck trying to install entropy's cm9 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601844). i flashed the rom and then formatted the data, system and cache, but then realized forgot to put the ICS gapps bundle on the sd card before i started. So i flashed once, did the formatting of data, system, cache, then attempted to boot and now im stuck at the samsung screen. It just hangs at that screen every time i try to boot. I have the red CWM screen and can get to CWM, but whenever i try to mount the SD it does not show up on my PC (Mac too) so i can't put any thing on it to flash and fix it.. when i attempt to flash the cm9 rom again it says [bad] and aborts. If anyone could help me out in where to go from here. I have done some reading about setting up ADB to push a rom to it, but will that work if i cant even mount the sd in the first place. CWM allows me to mount and say it should be active but i get nothing on the pc. Also which rom should i use to fix it.. also i follwoed the instructions and have Qksters IMEI backup script run (I'm not exactly sure what this does).
Thanks

the samsung boot loop is to be expected when flashing cm9. If CM9 is not your target Rom, then having GApps on your SD card or not doesnt matter. Carefully refollow the step in CM9 then continue onto cm10. After you do the three finger salute, your cwm will be blue. if all else fails, odin back to stock and start over..just make sure you have GApps when you reach the time to flash cm10.
You need to go to mount then unmount the first set. Then re flashee infinitum.

[Q] TWRP not installing right on GS3

Hey Guys!
I have rooted 3 other GS3's using the method listed here:
http://theunlockr.com/2013/04/02/how-to-root-the-verizon-samsung-galaxy-s-iii-running-android-4-1-2/
All other roots worked great! I was able to flash TWRP (I realize that the specific tutorial above calls for CWM instead of TWRP) and then install a CyanogenMod ROM. However, this time it did not go well.
I forgot to enable USB debugging before flashing VRALEC the first time, and when I went to run TWRP (2.7.0 for d2vzw) I realized that it did not mount the file system I thought that this was unusual and then realized that I need to enable USB debugging. I completely unrooted the phone and installed stock recovery and rom (VRBMF1, Android 4.1.2) once this was done I figured that I would go back to a personally tried and true version of TWRP (2.5.0 for d2vzw). At this point I was careful to ensure that I enabled USB debugging before proceeding with the root process.
With TWRP 2.5.0 I was prompted with a password. This befuddled me and upon some reading on the forums I came across a solution that worked for others but NOT ME. (Essentially you clear the cache and to a factory reset 3x in TWRP recovery and it will stop prompting you for the password and mount your file system correctly). For me I was unable to mount the cache for dalvic-cache to wipe it and factory reset does nothing.
I have rooted and unrooted my phone approx seven times trying different versions of TWRP, CWM, and even trying to use a seperately downloaded VRALEC file just in case if mine had an error.
I also came across this thread (below) and it did look somewhat promising however it is for android 4.2.1 and I don't want to mess up my phone any more than it already was. I am getting similar (not exactly the same) errors in my TWRP. I also made sure to use the same bootloader that I used on other 4.1.2 android systems in addition to using the d2vzw version of TWRP (It is for this reason that I am not sure that flumpster's comment applies to me). I figured that I would include this information just in case it was helpful:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2228447
Any Ideas? I am really looking forward to trying Liquid Smooth 3.0!
Just a quick addition: I was able to use Casual's root method however I am still running into the password prompt in recovery and 3 wipes is not getting rid of that password prompt..
Thanks in advance for any help!

Stuck while installing Pacrom, no backup, safestrap gs4

I started to install pacrom on my verizon galaxy s4 and am havings troubles. I'll start from the beginning.
I rooted the phone via Towelroot app and checked it with rootchecker.
Then i downloaded the following.
downloadandroidrom.com/file/GalaxyS4/SCH-i545/roms/PACMan/pac_jfltevzw-nightly-20130913.zip
downloadandroidrom.com/file/gapps/PA/pa_gapps-full-4.2-20130610-signed.zip
androidfilehost.com/?fid=95784891001603023 this is safestrap for "FOR USERS OF MJ7/MK2" IDK the difference between that and ME7/MI1 but i used MJ7/MK2
From here I opened up the safestrap app and installed the recovery and loaded it up. I left it on the stock rom slot while i continued to wipe everything and install the rom and GAPPS. This was a mistake, however, because i it bootlooped. I tried wiping and installing many different ways and still ended up with a bootloop. I realized in needed to use a rom slot and set that up. I wiped all the necessary things and installed the rom and GAPPS. Still it bootlooped. I have even tried to install without GAPPS with no avail. I forgot to make a backup of the stock and the stock slot just bootloops the pacrom boot screen. I cant find a way to add filed from my computer because whenever i connect it during the boot screen it shows up as a disc drive on my computer. Normally i would choose USB settings and make it where i can transefer data files, but i cant do this. I really need some help with this as I have done all I know to do. The downloads may be the problem, but from what i understand they are the correct ones. Thanks
Download this rom, move it to your phone and flash with recovery.
If you can't get the file on the phone I will help you out.
