[Q] CWM Data Wipe/Factory Reset gets stuck on formatting SD card - T-Mobile Sidekick 4G

I waited 2 nights to register so I could wade through fixes and tips and have seem to come up with little to nothing. I have CWM flashed on my phone through ROM Manager with the recovery file replaced in the system/bin and the update zip in the root of the SD card.
When I access CWM and click on Wipe Data/Factory reset it breezes through the first few steps pretty quickly and then gives me this error:
E: format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
It continues past this and then goes on to "formatting sd_card" and then just freezes. I left it on for 30mins and there was absolutely no progress. I've tried battery pulls and re-attempting the wipe with the same result. Have re-flashed CWM, ODIN'ed back to stock, etc etc and still run into the same snag. I'm beyond frustrated because since it never gets past this part I can't install the custom ROM I'm eying and it wipes enough data to have to ODIN every single time and re-root all over again. Just to be clear this error is NOT popping up on bootup but only during Data Wipe/Factory Reset and the only way out of the freeze is to do a battery pull which results in a soft brick.
If it helps any here is what I did prior to ever having run into this problem.
Rooted with SuperOneClick V.2.3.3
Installed ROM Manager
Installed RootBrowser Lite
Downloaded recovery and update zip
Placed both into root of SD card
Used RootBrowser Lite to move recovery file into system/bin
Booted into recovery mode
Attempted to Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Ran into snag on first try and every try thereafter
Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong, how to fix it or a workaround?
If possible a very detailed walk through would be appreciated as this is my first ROM flashing. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Did you hit apply update.zip after booting into recovery the first time I don't see that listed in your steps

No, actually, I didn't. I haven't seen a guide point it out or a video that went through this step. Lemme' give this a shot and see if that helps with the problem I'm running into Thanks for the quick response, hoping this is what I was missing!

Unfortunately this didn't seem to fix my problem. Still encountering:
E:format_volume: make_ext4fs failed on /dev/block/mmblk0p2
Formatting /sdcard/ .android_secure...
And frozen again -_- It's bad enough that the sidekick sucks as stock (took me this long to finally want to do something about it) and that it's being difficult and resisting change.

Hmmm was your phone stock before you did anything to it? Or did you get the phone used or something?
My advice would be Odin to stock and start over try redownloading the recovery.zip to make sure it wasn't a bad download. And try again go slow and tripple check to make sure your following the instructions word for word. I've messed them up a few times cuz I got cocky but I got everything down from doing it so much and checking my work. The first time I rooted my sk4g I did it with adb not superoneclick and it was my first android phone it took me 2 hours of reading and following steps perfectly.

go back to stock with odin,
Then root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100513
Flash cwm http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124453
And them flash this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663622 (dont freak out with the first boot with this kernel let it convert the partitions to ext4 and a loud voice will tell you what is going on)
Ive had that problem from flashing recovery from rom manager, and when it comes up i just return to stock. try to save and remove the update.zip from the sd card and see if you can get into recovery again and just flash the kernel(if cwm come up)

[Q] Can't get it to boot

So I installed this --> showthread.php?t=1197768
However, my phone doesn't like getting into recovery, so what I did was odin to KD1 and after the installation finishes, for some reason phone always boot into recovery (stock). I applied update.zip, then got to orange recovery. Wiped data/factory and cache, then checked mounts UMMU, and installed zip from sdcard (deodexed root kg6), installs completes ok but after rebooting its on a boot loop. Nothing happens.
What can I do to get this working? I'm going to odin back to kf2+root for the time being. Is there a way to install leak KG6 and apply root?
ps: this is my 2nd time attempting to install via CWM. the first time failed as well, the robot voice would say that my partition was, something, not enough space (probably has to do with not disabling voodoo, however I didn't find any option to do that). But that was another rom.
Odin to KG4, might have to root. Then do it again

Helpfully Hint.

Well today I took some time to try and figure out why people are having so many issues loading up these nice custom ROMS that the Developers have spent such great time on to make or tablets so great. We'll let start off with first I am no way a Developer and I do understand to processes that are needed to take my Tablet to the next level and recover whatever problems I happen to fall in along the way. After saying that let's begin.
This processes that I did is only for those willing to go the distance on there devices. If this is your first time with installing a custom rom and you where or are running TapUI firmware 5699 or if you happen to reverted back to stock TapUI to get the latest 5699 firmware update and are having trouble with installing new ROMS then this is for you. Others well I guess stick to the Q&A forums for further help, but this might help you out as well.
I went ahead and reverted back to stock using the 1.2 NVflash file found here http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummie...sig_permission_level=0&fb_sig_network=fw#2132
This got me back to stock 1.2 with stock Android recovery, not CWM. After the installation was complete I went ahead and checked for update and sure enough there was 5699 update available. So after update I tried loading up G_Harmony_Gingebreadv2.8.2 for 1.2 BL using stock recovery. I changed file name to update.zip like usual and installed it. Sure enough on reboot system it just stayed at the android splash screen, not the bootanimation. So, I thought maybe it's the recovery so I loaded up CWM 3.0.2.8 on its update zip to my internal SD card. Got it going and since I was using it I just left the ROM file name alone and installed it from internal SD card. Same thing happened as before. Was able to get back into recovery and mounts and format cache, data and system and install. Guess what same thing. For some reason I think is that the new firmware changes something that would cause these 1.2 ROMS not to load up. I tried 3 different ROMS without success and all 3 worked before the update. Solution I did was go into current CWM recovery and wipe data factory reset go into mounts and format cache, mount data then format and mount system then format. Go back and reboot system and when the first splash screen shows up hold down the power button to shut the tablet down. Reboot into APX mode and NVflash to fully stock 1.2 with Android recovery and let it boot up the TapUI fully. Then you can NVflash recovery 3.0.2.8 or NVflash 5.5.0.4 beta 15 for DRH. Choose you poison and flash away again without issues. Hopefully this will help other out and if you need the NVflash files I will be more then happy to uplink them or point you in the right direction.

[Q] Infuse 4G Bricked

Hi, i'm a relative noob to rooting and rom flashing but i know the basics and have successfully installed cyanogen on other phones and devices in the past. So essentially I am trying to install jellybean on my infuse 4g (on rogers). I begun with this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776129) but and gotten stuck trying to install entropy's cm9 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601844). i flashed the rom and then formatted the data, system and cache, but then realized forgot to put the ICS gapps bundle on the sd card before i started. So i flashed once, did the formatting of data, system, cache, then attempted to boot and now im stuck at the samsung screen. It just hangs at that screen every time i try to boot. I have the red CWM screen and can get to CWM, but whenever i try to mount the SD it does not show up on my PC (Mac too) so i can't put any thing on it to flash and fix it.. when i attempt to flash the cm9 rom again it says [bad] and aborts. If anyone could help me out in where to go from here. I have done some reading about setting up ADB to push a rom to it, but will that work if i cant even mount the sd in the first place. CWM allows me to mount and say it should be active but i get nothing on the pc. Also which rom should i use to fix it.. also i follwoed the instructions and have Qksters IMEI backup script run (I'm not exactly sure what this does).
Thanks

the samsung boot loop is to be expected when flashing cm9. If CM9 is not your target Rom, then having GApps on your SD card or not doesnt matter. Carefully refollow the step in CM9 then continue onto cm10. After you do the three finger salute, your cwm will be blue. if all else fails, odin back to stock and start over..just make sure you have GApps when you reach the time to flash cm10.
You need to go to mount then unmount the first set. Then re flashee infinitum.

[Q] Bootlooping MD5 mismatch after CM11 install

Using ROM Manager and the latest version of CWM I tried installing today's (12-08) nightly build of CM11 to try it out. After doing a complete backup and then wipe data/cache the install failed. I'm not sure why but it said it was aborted and to check log and report the error to ROM Manager.
After that it asked if I wanted to reboot and I wanted to make sure I restored from my backup so I backed out of the screen but then it booted up on its own. It did not get past the S3 loading screen with the CM Android/alien guy it just turned off, back to that screen again and then back into recovery.
At this point I went to recover from my backup file and it said MD5 mismatch and won't load. I've since tried wiping data/cache/dalvik cache all manually and then boot up, or wipe everything and try to install the rom again... every time it just loops back to recovery mode. The last time I tried installing the rom again it told me I might have lost root access and asked if I wanted to repair it... I'm not sure what that means.
Any suggestions? I am lost at this point. I have no experience with ADB (I'm not sure if that's my only option) but I've used ODIN mode a few times. Easiest solution would be best.

I had the exact same issue when trying to flash that same CM11 nightly build but with TWRP...
I just pulled the battery took my SD card out and reinserted it and I just kept booting into recovery and turning the phone off until it let me reflash a rom or backup. Obviously this isnt the most legitimate solution but that could work for you! It did for me!...
This could have been caused by needing an update of CWM or TWRP to better support 4.4 perhaps?

I tried that to no avail. I unfortunately had to revert to stock unrooted via ODIN mode and it got me to boot back up. I can just reroot now. Luckily I made a backup with Titanium and uploaded it to my Google Drive.

[Q] Only fastboot accessible to flash / restore my TF700

Hello,
My TF700 was on a CleanRom (2.3 i think), for a while, i decided to update.
- I installed the latest CWM (via fastboot) and flashed a Cyanogen 10.2 "stable", but my tablet freezed very quickly after successful boot, i tried some reboots and get same problem.
- I tried to install a stock ODEX root ROM, the tablet freezed at asus logo
- I flashed TWRP instead of CWM, it doesn't helped
- I tried wipe data and cache with TWRP, then my data was not accessible anymore and TWRP was unable to re-create it
- I searched on forums and found on this one that flash a boot.blob file can solve the problem
- It doesn't and now CWM and TWRP refuse to work ....
So i post here before getting my tablet completely brick.
At this point, i get access to fastboot / abd, CWM load but don't work (reboot when trying to do something), TWRP don't load.
Any suggestion to get back to a Stock ODEX rooted rom ?
Excuse my english ...

Sounds like you are on an old bootloader. Flash the stock rom from asus by unzipping the zip you download from their website and placing in the root folder of your micro sd and then go into rck from the bootloader menu (power + volume down whilst booting)
Or you could just flash it from recovery....
lj50036 helped me to flash a new bootloader, recovery, rom and nvflash to make it unbrickable
Not just helped he spent many times to explain me how it works and what he did.
He is very nice and this was a pleasure to talk with him, i'm happy that there's still person like that on this planet
see you !

I buy a tf700 with cm 11 a few days ago i am really interessted on how this steps works. I really want to make it unbrickeable, But i dont really understand how it works. I can not enter in fastboot. at least i got cwm interface when rebooting with adb into recovery.
Can u explain how you did it?
It invovles flashing a modified bootloader and the flatline recovery and then using Wheelie to generate your nvflash blobs.
Step-by-step instructions (which you need to follow to the letter) are here:

Stuck in boot loop, fastboot and recovery accessible
Hello,
I'm having a similar issue and I need help! Initially my tablet was rooted with Cromi-X 5.4. Then I decided to try Crombi-KK.
Here is what happened:
- Updated TWRP recovery
- Did a full wipe as recommended
- Flashing got stuck at the Crombi-KK loading sign
- Tried to reflash but TWRP wasn't detecting data partition anymore
- Instead installed the other recommended recovery CWMR.
- Flashed Crombi-KK, it worked. Played around with it for a few days, it was wonderful, fast and responsive.
- Battery died out and when I turned it back on I got a UIDs system inconsistent error.
- I found online many recommendations to reflash so I tried to do that
- Since then I'm stuck in a boot loop. I see the initial "bios" Asus logo then it restarts over and over.
- I am able to access bootloader and recovery
I've tried reflashing the asus stock blob. I've tried wiping the data through CWMR but it starts working and then it restarts. I don't know what to do anymore, so if anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it!
Thanks
Which recovery and bootloader version do you have now?
A (for KK) outdated bootloader seems the most likely culprit.
You can try save the recovery log when you flash or grab a logcat of the bootloop, but probably it'll only tell you that the recovery cannot mount /data.
Determine that you are on the correct bootloader, if not update it. If you're lucky the tablet will start right up. If it doesn't, formatting /data is the only way I know to get it back. Not just wiping - formatting it. You will loose everything on internal SD, so I hope you have a nandroid you can restore from later.
If you use TWRP 2.7+ be aware that formatting can take more than an hour. Let it finish!
For good measure, download CROMBi-KK again, check the md5 and then flash that file.
I'm on 10.6.1.14.10 bootloader which I think is the latest one
I have 6.0.4.7 CWMR
I'm trying to format data completely but when i do it in CWMR it starts and then the tablet reboots on it's own after a couple of minutes.
How can I retrieve the logs, I never had to do it before.
Thanks for your help
Mhh, getting a little more complicated.
Your BL is ok...
What do you see in CWM when you go into Mounts and Storage? What is mounted?
The recovery logs are under Advanced > show logs.
I'm at work now but from what I remember the only thing mounted was the cache. I'll double check tonight. Do you think there's any hope or I have a brand new paper weight?

Can you fastboot flash twrp?
It's much much better than CWM, has its own terminal and will be easier to offer the correct format command.

So I flashed TWRP and when I go in mount/storage everything is selected except for system. Should I do a format data from the wipe menu before flashing crombi-kk again?

To be in the safe side, yes, that is what I would do. TWTRP 2.7.+ takes a long time to format and it may seem the process got stuck. Give it at least 90 minutes to finish.
Then reflash CROMBi
I'm back up and running !!!
This time installing TWRP, everything was mounted (maybe my previous flash before CWMR wasn't good), did a format data, waited until it was done, flashed latest Crombi-KK and going through setup now. Hopefully won't have the same UID issue on next shutdown. I didn't enable fsync or journaling so hopefully it won't happen again.
Thanks both of you for your help!
Good deal! Happy for you!
