So I installed this --> showthread.php?t=1197768
However, my phone doesn't like getting into recovery, so what I did was odin to KD1 and after the installation finishes, for some reason phone always boot into recovery (stock). I applied update.zip, then got to orange recovery. Wiped data/factory and cache, then checked mounts UMMU, and installed zip from sdcard (deodexed root kg6), installs completes ok but after rebooting its on a boot loop. Nothing happens.
What can I do to get this working? I'm going to odin back to kf2+root for the time being. Is there a way to install leak KG6 and apply root?
ps: this is my 2nd time attempting to install via CWM. the first time failed as well, the robot voice would say that my partition was, something, not enough space (probably has to do with not disabling voodoo, however I didn't find any option to do that). But that was another rom.
Odin to KG4, might have to root. Then do it again

Not sure how to fix it. Before it happened, I was rooted with a Cyanogen rom on 1.6. I also had a black and green theme on. I went to install a new rom called "OpenEclair". I downloaded it, placed it in my sdcard root folder, and tried to install it. I had an installation error and it aborted. At this point, I figured ok, I'll just reboot. It kept me at the G1 screen for over 25 minutes, so I knew something was wrong. So no matter what I did from here on out (trying to perform a backup restoration, flash a different rom, etc), I would be stuck on the G1 screen. Finally, I flashed a JesusFreke rom and it let my phone come back on, so I haven't tried anything since. However, this rom is ANDROID 1.1. It sucks. Is there any way I can get back to either where I started, or even get this OpenEclair 2.1 rom working properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. When I try to install the OpenEclair rom (before and after downgrade) it will say
E:Can't chown/mod /system/xbin/librank
*No such file or directory)
D:Failure at line 221:
set perm 0 0 06755 SYSTEM:xbin/librank
Installation aborted.
Press Home+Back to reboot
I had this also. The problem went away after I installed DangerSPL which, as stated at the top of the OpenEclair thread, is required to install this on the G1.
If you don't have DangerSPL, OpenEclair will fail to install as it doesn't have enough room to place its files.
However, if you do have it...
I have noticed this with some of the 2.1 ROMs. I think the reason is that, since we flash using an "updater", it wont wipe the partition before flashing. This leaves the possibility that there are old files with different permissions that prevent the new ROM from properly taking.
Boot your phone into fastboot (for the G1, hold the camera button while powering up), set it into usb mode (by the "back" button, I think), then use the fastboot tool to clear the boot and system partitions:
/fastboot wipe boot
/fastboot wipe system
This will clear the "ROM" component from the phone, and you can then go and flash whatever ROM you want. Make sure to wipe the data partition via recovery.
If, after wiping the ROM and rebooting, the phone is stuck at the carrier screen and says "Fastboot USB", that means it tried to boot the usual way and found no data in the boot partition. You need to boot into recovery and flash a ROM. Using "fastboot reboot" or the reboot command from the phone's fastboot screen will cause this. Use the phone's fastboot "power off" button ("menu" in the G1), then boot it into recovery.
Also remember that any install that fails after the "verification" phase will destroy the existing ROM, since you will be left with a partially installed ROM on top of the older one.
Thanks a lot guys. will try all of this when I get off of work. Much appreciation!
Got everything worked out. Just had to install that danger spl :]
Just flashed FastTest rom, pretty freakin' nice I must say!
Is there a way to backup all my apps/contacts/texts before wiping and flashing a new rom?
HI,
i am trying to use this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14695856
i got the clockword running
however, i cannot find the
Select "install zip from sdcard".
Select "choose zip from sdcard
the whole menu option does exist all my CWM says is

format internal sd card"
i downloaded voodoo pb&j and left it in default file name "0602_charge_voodoo.zip." and copied it over.
it however refuses to show in CWM.
I have been searching the net for like 45 minutes trying to solve this.
can anyone help?
can someone plz help?
i just tried erasing all contents on SD card, and copying the kernal over, still doesnt show up in CWM.
ALso my CWM says "manual mode" is this the problem?
thx.
anyone? i really want to root but i am stuck =\
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657
that is the exact guide i am following, but i am having the problem i described above. within CWM i am unable to load the kernal.
When yo ugo into recovery mode what color is all the lettering on the screen?
Secondly after flashing CWR did you fully boot the device up before trying to flash a kernel? If so that is your problem. Reason being is if you DO NOT flash a kernel right after flashing CWR before boot the device the recovery image gets overwritten. You MUST install a custom kernel right after flashing CWR before fully booting the device up the first time.

He's right. You have to flash the kernel and rom before you boot. If your recovery is yellow your good to go. If its blue then your flashing the recovery correctly. Redownload the recovery file and try again.
hey thx works now, comes down to the first reboot. they should add that to the guide.
Great glad it got worked out for ya.
I'll post my question after some background:
I was on CWM Touch, downloaded and installed the TWRP from google play. Rebooted into recovery, created backups to internal and external, and flashed SkyICS 4.2f6 by Seanz. I followed OP instructions on how to flash. Did not have any problems and it was very easy to use.
Used TWRP and flashed several MODS and ROM updates without any hitch. All I did was reboot into recovery selected the zip files and swipe to install, did not even had to wipe cache or anything. I am not sure if this is the correct way but I was able to do so without any problems.
I wanted to install the same rom but to do a clean wipe since the rom had several updates. So, I rebooted into TWRP recovery, did OP flashing instructions which were:
-reboot into team win recovery
-wipe system
-factory data reset
-then go to mounts and choose external sd
-no go back and find the rom by choosing install zip
-swipe to confirm
-then install the radio you downloaded
and when complete reboot phone
-at this point everything will be settling and caching
which may or may not seem laggy.... and yes that white line is normal
its a battery representation mod
-im sure youll be eager to update busybox immediatly but let me tell you no
first open super user app.. find preferences and update user binary
hit it twice giving it root permissions
now .. is when to update busy box through the provided installer
-after you have done this
-power down phone
reboot into recovery and flash the latest update
and email package only
However, I was not able to reboot into recovery. I have a Samsung Skyrocket but was not able to put the phone into recovery mode by pressing and holding the power, volume up, and volume down buttons. The phone kept vibrating but the Samsung screen wont come up. Frustrated, I rebooted the phone, downloaded CWM, updated to Touch and proceeded to flash using CWM with no problems.
At this point i'm hesitant on using TWRP. I am not even sure if ODIN supports it. I'm afraid that if i'm on TWRP and brick my phone, I will not be able to use ODIN.
Questions:
Has anyone encounter the same problem?
Is TWRP compatible with ODIN?
Can anyone using Samsung Skyrocket confirm the recovery steps used above is correct?
Thank you for your help.
i am currently using twrp and ive had no problems flashing roms including sky ics which those directions are from also a recovery isnt compatible with odin if you want to odin back to stock or flash anew recovery image you just go into download mode and procedd from there

To reboot into recovery you hold power, volume up and down and when you see the first samsung logo let go of the power or it will keep rebooting.
As for being compatible with odin, I'm not sure what you mean. You can flash TWRP through odin, you can get into download mode with twrp installed also.
Have you tried reinstalling TWRP?
I waited 2 nights to register so I could wade through fixes and tips and have seem to come up with little to nothing. I have CWM flashed on my phone through ROM Manager with the recovery file replaced in the system/bin and the update zip in the root of the SD card.
When I access CWM and click on Wipe Data/Factory reset it breezes through the first few steps pretty quickly and then gives me this error:
E: format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
It continues past this and then goes on to "formatting sd_card" and then just freezes. I left it on for 30mins and there was absolutely no progress. I've tried battery pulls and re-attempting the wipe with the same result. Have re-flashed CWM, ODIN'ed back to stock, etc etc and still run into the same snag. I'm beyond frustrated because since it never gets past this part I can't install the custom ROM I'm eying and it wipes enough data to have to ODIN every single time and re-root all over again. Just to be clear this error is NOT popping up on bootup but only during Data Wipe/Factory Reset and the only way out of the freeze is to do a battery pull which results in a soft brick.
If it helps any here is what I did prior to ever having run into this problem.
Rooted with SuperOneClick V.2.3.3
Installed ROM Manager
Installed RootBrowser Lite
Downloaded recovery and update zip
Placed both into root of SD card
Used RootBrowser Lite to move recovery file into system/bin
Booted into recovery mode
Attempted to Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Ran into snag on first try and every try thereafter
Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong, how to fix it or a workaround?
If possible a very detailed walk through would be appreciated as this is my first ROM flashing. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Did you hit apply update.zip after booting into recovery the first time I don't see that listed in your steps

No, actually, I didn't. I haven't seen a guide point it out or a video that went through this step. Lemme' give this a shot and see if that helps with the problem I'm running into Thanks for the quick response, hoping this is what I was missing!

Unfortunately this didn't seem to fix my problem. Still encountering:
E:format_volume: make_ext4fs failed on /dev/block/mmblk0p2
Formatting /sdcard/ .android_secure...
And frozen again -_- It's bad enough that the sidekick sucks as stock (took me this long to finally want to do something about it) and that it's being difficult and resisting change.
Hmmm was your phone stock before you did anything to it? Or did you get the phone used or something?
My advice would be Odin to stock and start over try redownloading the recovery.zip to make sure it wasn't a bad download. And try again go slow and tripple check to make sure your following the instructions word for word. I've messed them up a few times cuz I got cocky but I got everything down from doing it so much and checking my work. The first time I rooted my sk4g I did it with adb not superoneclick and it was my first android phone it took me 2 hours of reading and following steps perfectly.

go back to stock with odin,
Then root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100513
Flash cwm http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124453
And them flash this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663622 (dont freak out with the first boot with this kernel let it convert the partitions to ext4 and a loud voice will tell you what is going on)
Ive had that problem from flashing recovery from rom manager, and when it comes up i just return to stock. try to save and remove the update.zip from the sd card and see if you can get into recovery again and just flash the kernel(if cwm come up)

You are my saviour! I seriously love you! This worked PERFECTLY! I'm now running Glorious Overdos v3.3 and loving every single second of it. Because of you my phone is no longer a nightmare. You deserve a thanks
I am trying to flash a custom ROM to my DINC2, this is my first time. I have run into a problem. 4ext recovery has been sitting at the "Installing update..." screen while flashing the ROM for over an hour now. I can hit the phone search button and get "taking screenshot" to appear, but nothing else happens. What is going on?
I have chosen the unofficial multilang MIUI4 ICS ROM. So far I have done the following.
1) Revolutionary S-OFF via downgrade method, install CWM
2) Root with su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip
3) Download & install 4EXT recovery (RC8).
4) With 4EXT, full wipe/ factory restore, clear cache + dalvik
5) Flash the ROM zip file once, this was successful and took about 5 minutes. However whenever I rebooted phone it would come right back to 4EXT rather than booting into the ROM.
6) Decided to try flashing ROM zip file second time over previous flash. I did NOT do a wipe this time, just attempted to overwrite. Now the phone is just sitting there.
I did check the md5 sums all along the way and everything looks ok. Can anyone help me?
Update. In case anyone cared. 4ext RC8 remained in the same for several more hours. I ended up rebooting the phone with vol up + vol down + pwr, and then attempted the same action again after wipe + format all except SD card. This time the flash "took" and I am now running the ROM. I am not sure what happened as I did everything exactly the same. But it's running now.
