[Q] How to properly save external game data using titanium backup? - General Questions and Answers

Hello. I have a game here (Bard's Tale) and it has created a new folder called /Android/data/com.inxille.BardTale to store game data.
I tried backing the whole app + external data and I can't do it. I'm pretty sure this use to work on old versions (I seemed to recall making a backup of this game 3 months ago).
I've tried changing "Backup app external data" to:
1. Enabled (always)
2. Enabled if smaller than a certain size (I picked 9999 as the size and the game data is about 3.5GB)
3. Enabled for apps within a chosen label (I've checked the game is included in the list I chose)
Any ideas on how to back it up properly?
thanks

[Q] How to painlessly move from Nexus One to Nexus S

I just bought the Nexus S, but I fear the process of importing all my apps and settings from the N1 to the NS. I have about 80 apps, approx 20 paid apps and 20gb used on the external 32Gb memorycard. Of course, I will need to trim down the data amount to lower than 16Gb that is available on the NS. All of the apps that can, are installed on the SD card.
I have both a regular gmail account and a paid Google Apps account that are synked with my N1
So, must I set aside a whole working day manually re-installing all apps and reenter licence codes & settings & synk settings, or can I simple log in to the new phone and experience - like magic - that everything is transferred wirelessly? (I would consider believing in Santaclaus if that happened)
i moved from hero to nexus s and had the same problem, i used titanium backup to restore most of my apps+data, it will automatically link the apps to the market and install them on the next best place (for example it was on ext on my hero but got moved to internal on my nexus s)
but rom-/systemapp-settings had to be reentered manually because the rom got corrupted when i tried to restore my settings (for example google account)
hope this could help you out a bit.
I've gone through 4 phones and my paid apps have followed me. The non paid apps don't though. I definitely recommend Titanium Backup for those as well. Especially if you have game saves or something. I don't mind re-entering information for like connecting to my server but game saves that would piss me off to lose.
The free version I think you have to restore them individually but the paid version you can do them all at once I believe. Coming from the same android version always helps this process too.
Google login on the new phone should push a lot of stuff to the phone, but you might need to make sure the setting on the Nexus One to back up your setigns on the cloud/mothership is turned on. It's not been 100% reliable for me in the past moving from one phone to another.
Agreed with the others who suggest Titanium, it's been a life-saver.
We're assuming you're rooted, because to use Titanium, you must be rooted. Also, get the paid version, it's under $5 and adds a lot of functionality, like batch restore of all your apps.
On caveat when moving from one phone to another (or even one ROM to another) is that when you restore with Titanium, you just want to restore apps + app data...you don't want to restore system settings, this could, supposedly, lead to some trouble.
i see this asked a lot, but i must be confused. i thought that anytime you sign into an android phone with your account, all free and paid apps you have automaitically download to the phone, simply by signing in. i know when i completely wipe my phone, sign in upon boot up, and all apps return like i never even wiped. i can watch them install one by one over a 15 min period.
even my wallpaper gets saved to google's server, and placed back onto the phone as my wall paper. most settings too.
the one thing you will not have saved are texts, oh and any app-specific data from the old phone.
Your app history is tied to the sign in account (free and paid).
The data/settings for the applications is the issue at hand. Some developers sync the data to cloud services, some don't. For the latter you must to the titanium backup deal to move stuff or copy the sd card contents. Some devs opt to just create a folder on the sd card.
Most google applications (obviously) sync data/settings to the cloud. They offer devs a service to do the same. As more devs use it or their own you'll be able to seemlessly switch from device to device withou a hassle.
if i didn't want to use titanium is it as simple as zipping up the content on the nexus one's sd card and then somehow importing all contents (app data, etc) on to the nexus S?
then after that reinstall any apps that i have downloaded or bought?

Yep, it's pretty much that simple.

[Q] how to backup a game properly?

I downloaded a racing game (Asphalt 7) and it's about 1.7GB installed according to "manage apps". According to playstore, the game is around 1.6GB download.
When I backed it up using titatium backup pro, I looked at the backup files and altogether the files are around 150mb. Obviously, something is amiss.
Can you help? thanks
In Titanium preferences you have an option to "Backup app external data" and "Select external data max size".
Try to just set the first one to Enabled (Always).
I'm not sure if it's worth it tho. Maybe better to just save your game settings and progress and have the big files downloaded when you need them.
Tried always and using Max size of 9999mb, backup size is still too small
Hmm thats strange, well the huge datafiles from games are stored here and there.
I have quite a few big games and most of them store their huge files here:
/Android/data/obb/
and
/Gameloft/
I was thinking of just manually backing these folders up just incase download servers would go down or something like that.
Anyway, maybe it's best to have these huge packs separated from Titanium backups since I feel Titanium is pretty slow as it is when it comes to Dropbox, Box syncing.
Just having Titanium compressing them huge files will take some time even on a pretty fast phone.

[Q] Titanium backup showed less current bkp's after...

To be clear from the start, my titanium backup is the paid version and it was set to store all backups on my external SD card. I had been recently manually running the two scheduled programs "Redo backups for modified data" and "Backup new user+system apps & newer versions" over the last couple of weeks. I wiped my phone entirely and using TWRP put on a clean backup of a fresh full firmware flash and did my system all over again since I had removed one too many system apps and "Videos" app was not working correctly and a few others.
Well I got my phone encrypted (not SD card), rooted it, got titanium backup installed and set it to use the SD card instead of internal but when it refreshed I saw many many many apps only had backups as of March... I purposefully ran the two schedules before I did the phone wipe, to ensure that I would have current up-to-date saved data for all apps. I remember scanning down a bit and seeing April 17 for the backup dates. So why did so many backups not appear? I have had a hell of a time setting everything up correctly again, my launcher was disorganized as it was before I set up my phone entirely to my desires. Everything was messed up. A few apps did in fact have current backups. Especially the new apps.
Is there something I am missing about "Redo backups for modified data" and "Backup new user+system apps & newer versions" as to what their function is? Don't those two fuctions ensure that every app both old and new get all backed up and all their data with it? Or do I have to go to batch actions and manually just tell it to do an entire backup of everything and ignore those two features? I am very confused by this and a bit angry since I thought the whole point of those scheduled programs were to ensure you had everything backed up.
Can you help me figure this out?
Thanks.

[Q] Titanium Backup Pro not backing up game data?

I have a Spiderman Unlimited game on my Moto G (2nd gen) that had about 600MB + of game data, and I thought backing it up using Titanium Backup Pro would save that data (I backed it up onto my SD card), but now that I've restored the backup, only the basic game is present and I'll have to re-download the additional data all over again. How do I prevent this from happening in the future?

You see, apart from normal app data, other additional large data are stored in /mnt/obb or /*memory_card_path*/Android/obb
Titanium may not backup these files. (I'm not sure though)
So backup them manually.

Thanks for your reply. My SD card data is still intact. Is there some way to manually move my game data to the game's installation folder in order to avoid downloading it all over again?

The game data is stored in /data/data/com.something.game_name folder. ( You have to find it)
The large files as I said will be stored in /mnt/obb or /sdcard_location/Android/obb
So, if you have the game data perfectly with folders inside like cache, databases and all, you can place it inside /data/data/com.something.game_folder and it will work.

Thanks I'll check it out.
Also, to save me the trouble in the future, I went to Titanium Backup Settings and enabled "Backup app external data". That should do it, right?
Another doubt I had is: How do I save my home screen layout (i.e positioning of app icons, etc.) using Titanium backup?
The game is giving me issues, and it says that I have too many Google Play Games Accounts linked to the game. Does backing up and restoring apps from Titanium backup usually give issues or is it perfectly safe? I don't want it to cause any unnecessary tangles and knots on my phone...

Titanium Backup & Internal Storage: Does Not Display Apps Which Exist on SD

Hey Guys -
I've looked everywhere for a solution to this issue and even submitted a request to Titanium's developers, but have yet to find a solution or get a response. In fact, I can't find an issue matching mine online. Posting here hoping someone can help...
The Issue
When launching Titanium Backup on my Shield (6.01 / Rooted), it lists only 289 apps. The problem is that I have a total of 310 user / system ones installed therefore roughly 20 apps aren't listed. I'm wanting to upgrade my tablet to 4.2 and want to backup first, but many of the apps I frequently use are installed to the sd physically.
Why I Think It's Happening
Apps not listed seem to be all of the ones whose files are physically stored on the SD by the OS - I don't think it's related to permissions at all. When upgrading to Marshmallow, I formatted my 64gb SD as "Internal Storage" as doing so makes space management so much easier. No more having to use 3rd party apps to manage and create symlinks for apps I manually copy to the SD. Android seems to dynamically moves / copies things to the SD as needed which works well. If wanting to install a large (1gb+) app, sometimes I must go to an app's properties in Settings and choose to have it's files physically stored on the SD, but that's rare and still using an OEM toolset.
Attempted Workarounds
Most topics I've found when looking for a resolution dealt with not being able to restore apps involving an SD which isn't my issue. Still, I did try the following:
- Tried different storage Providers when setting backup folder location
- Looked all over for potential settings that may have an effect
- Ensured everything's up to date (all is except minor version behind on OS)
- Created new Data Profile in TB
- Tried default settings in TB
Example
Attached are a couple of screenshots for my installation of "Borderlands 2" which is one of the apps affected. As installed it's just shy of 4gb, it must exist on an SD or be the only thing installed, yet it does not appear in TB. To note, when using a file explorer such as FX, the OBB & Data folders / files for applications existing physically on the SD still appear when browsing to Android\Obb or Android\Data from internal storage. In fact, they aren't even listed as symlinks.
Tablet Specs
- Nvidia Shield Tablet (Not K1, but was replaced after battery callback)
- Android 6.0.1
- Rooted /w SuperSU (binary 2.78) All prompts set to "Grant"
- Titanium Backup Pro 7.5.0
- 64gb microsd formatted as Internal Storage (Fastest write and best rated I could find as of 6 months ago)
- Storage (as reported by OS in Settings)
- 70.28gb total
- 63.96gb used
- Internal Storage: 8.31gb of 11.61gb used
- Samsung SD Card: 55.65gb or 58.67gb used
Any suggestions? Thanks!
Hi, in the meantime could you try another software to make your app's backup, helium is my current choice (slide down in first page and select full backup instead of data only).
