Compass Issue

I've been searching for solutions to this problem for weeks now with no luck.
Many users have complained about this issue. I'm quoting what the problem is exactly below.

Ever since I use Gingerbread and Google Maps (5.+), the compass function in Google Maps is totally erratic and wrong, basically useless.
Here is what I noticed when using compass dependent apps:
If it is a based magnetic compass only, it works.
if it is a GPS based compass only, it works, although you must be moving over a certain speed for the GPS to detect directions.
If it is a acceleration (Gyro) based compass it is all screwed up.
I tested all the above scenarios with many GPS, compass, and map utilities and I can confirm that that is teh case.
here is an simple way you can test this:
use Google Maps (not Nav) to display a map while you are driving. you will notice that while the car is in motion the map orientation is correct and tracks you direction in relations to North. Once you stop for more then a few seconds, the GPS compass can not detect motion and you will see the orientation of the map (or the little blue triangle) shifts to a new direction sometime as wrong as 180 degrees!
I tried calibration, resting the A-GPS data, factory reset, you name it.. Nothing fixes this problem. I don't think it is a hardware problem because I had the same issue with an Atrix 4G..
From the research I did on line there are evidence that this effect all Motorola gingerbread phone, and possibly other makes as well.
This is not a new problem, and all the solutions I have found on line do not fix this problem.

I've tried all the calibration tips, but it just doesnt work because it isnt a problem with the compass. On dialing #*0*# I'm able to check if the compass is working fine on its own, and yes, its properly calibrated. The problem is with Google Maps and the Android OS.

I worked out a fix that does not require a factory reset! It does require root and the Android SDK. Connect the phone to your computer using usb and run 'adb shell' once connected run the following commands:
su
cd /data/misc
rm AK8973Prms.txt
rm AK8973Prms.txt.tmp
reboot
This removes the saved calibration data. On reboot it will regenerate these files. In my research I found that on other phones the calibration data may be stored in a file called akmd_set.txt.

I'm quite positive that these solutions would work but they require root access. I would like to do a temporary root (root and then unroot) so that my warranty doesnt get voided. I've tried using SuperOneClick but it was unsuccessful (checked through SU checker). So is there any other way in which this could be done or solved?
Its running 2.3.6.

I have exactly that issue, always when you need your navigator walking. It happens with google maps navigator and with Copilot Live too.Just when walking, not driving. So you need to imagine where are you walking.
I asked in a Spanish forum (htcmania.com) but nobody talked about. So I thank it were from my rom (last Austrian with last CSC from the last Germany), our perhaps from the kernel (Ardatdat 1.8.1 to 1.8.3).

How? SuperOneClick has an Unroot option but it isnt rooting my phone. Can this (rooting and unrooting) be done with other rooting methods too?

Yes, you can root by flashing a rooted stock kernel which can be found in our forum easily and you can unroot by flashing the stock kernel after you're done.
I think SuperOneClick does not support galaxy r

Would flashing the stock kernel require me to restore a backup or would my phone data be intact? I'm asking this because I did the restore once when I did a device update and it was a messy procedure, it did not happen successfully. Sorry for being such a noob.

Ideally a kernel only affects the boot image. All other images like System, Data etc remain intact....so there's no question of you phone data getting messed.

Actually, navigation/directions doent work on my SGR, when i select get directions, it will show route, but the MY POSITION icon doent move at all...

Phone display off but phone is working

Hey.
My Galaxy R display gone off after sometime of locking the phone. But phone is working fine. I can hear the ringtone when call is coming. When I switch any button phone display not work but I can use phone after rebooting and again it happen after sometime when the phone is lock. I tried installing another ROM and kernel but still it is happening. So what i have to do to solve this.

I think there's a problem with the display backlight. Better take it to the SSC if the device is in warranty..

Sadly I don't have warranty and I don't think it is backlight problem. If it is then why would it work every time after reboot.

I figured something else and now I am sure it is not problem with backlight. Today I changed light setting to automatic off to 10 minutes. And after that I checked whether it happen or not. After sometime I tried to unlock drawing the pattern but it is very difficult to draw and goes wrongly and i tried every button but except power button no button work. I tried after that drawing the pattern and working fine. After sometime again it happen and it goes fine after pressing power button. But still it wont work it if happen when the backlight is off. So I think now you people have some more information. And i hope I can fix it soon with your help.

Hey buddy. this thing happened with me lots of time when I was over GB. If you are over GB then flash ICS or JB.. this will definitely solve out your problem. But if you think this wont help then can visit SSC.

I updated my phone to ICS. But still it is happening. i don't knw what is wrong with it. Is there any other solution.

Hmmm... me too faced the issue in GB... not sure about ICS.. coz I was very little time in ICS... can u connect ur phone with PC and run log cat... after it get stuck.. when u reboot it will get ended and u can send the logcat... developers can see what is going wrong...

Not sure.. how u have taken this logcat.. not getting anything interesting...
1. Run logcat after connecting your pc..
2. let it run till ur mobile get stuck...
3. after it get stuck.. u have to reboot(rite?)
4. while rebooting the logcat will get ended
5. send the logcat...
If u used the same procedure, then do one more testing after doing a factory reset(don't install any app and don't restore ur app)...

An app won't work because the logcat is cleared as soon as the device reboots.

i froze some apps using BT and i had just to turn USB debuging on :\ since than the phone didnt turn off randomly.it didnt reboot once since i enabled it.i didnt even look for this but i accidently found it and tried.but still im going to find out what was the problme.im a newbie on android roms but i want to create my own rom without those google services.i aim for battery life.anyways thnx again for your help

Glad you fixed the random reboots. It always seems to be a defective app, unless it's hardware. That's cool you want to create your own roms. Maybe you can create roms for those with older phones too. XDA forums is a great place to learn all about roms, flashing, and what tools to use if your getting into rom development. Best of luck in your quest.

[Q] It's been 4 days and I still can't fix this bootloop!

Okay I had an L rom for about a month maybe less. Then Friday night, it just turns off and now all I see is flying colors.
In the ask any question thread I asked and some really awesome dudes were trying to help me but all of their solutions were in vain.
I used method 1 and 2 of the return to stock.
I made sure I followed EVERY step. Still nothing, it's been trying to boot for far far too long.
I really need my phone, and I'm not sure what else to do. I can't jump because I'm broke and that tamper flag is up.
Can someone help me? I have teamveiwer if it helps.
Also I should say I get several errors I think, like no recovery.sig or boot.sig when I clearly just flashed them.
Why do I get these errors? Is nobody else having the same problem as me? I'm getting really frustrated and to anyone who helps me solve my problem will get my oatmeal raisin cookie recipe (Not kidding, that's serious).
Please somebody help me. Ill be constantly refreshing this page so if you have any questions I will answer them.

Download "15 second adb installer" if you're having issues with adb or fastboot commands
Ignore the .sig errors
Worst case scenario flash each file one by one if flash all.bat doesn't work
Post up what happens after you run flash all.bat too

Have you tried flashing the KitKat factory images instead of Lollipop?

Help Note 5 continuously restarts during calls after root

After I rooted my Note 5 the phone will randomly restart/reboot. Sometimes it happens hours in between each other and sometimes it's minutes in between. I factory reset it I've tried unrooting through SuperSU I've flashed a different rom, the phone would still restart randomly after that. I'm just getting tired of my phone restarting during calls. Someone plz help me I don't want a refurbished phone from my cellular provider ...

Well if you did some more research you would see that it's your kernel causing problems. I won't tell you what kernel to flash because that would be too easy.

Bro when u asking for help give all the info u have. Are u using a Rom any mods. When issue occurs how long does it take to happen. More info is better or your gonna get told to search.

Try skyhigh kernel 2.1 and you're laughing. [emoji5] [emoji5]

I'm having that same issue. I rooted using the guide on here, using Oden, TWRP, and the Noble root Kernal. The phone is only rebooting while making phone calls. It usually happens right around 1 minute into the phone call. I have searched on here and tried coming up with something onew google. From what I have read is it something wrong with the kernal? Just hoping someone can point me in the right direction on how to correct this problem, and is all that needs to be done is flash a different kernal? If so what kernel should I use. Sorry for hijacking your thread, just didn't want to make another one asking the same question. Any help is greatly appreciated

If you don't know what you're doing then you should do plenty of research... You shouldn't ever "screw around" if you don't know what you're doing. Keep reading and learn how to properly flash everything before you do this stuff or else you'll end up with a fancy paperweight.

You need to flash that file through custom recovery. You have to download it to your phone then boot into your custom recovery to install it. Just follow the directions on aryer97's thread where you downloaded the kernal.
