Compass Issue - Samsung Galaxy R i9103

I've been searching for solutions to this problem for weeks now with no luck.
Many users have complained about this issue. I'm quoting what the problem is exactly below.
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/61818a4ef4
Ever since I use Gingerbread and Google Maps (5.+), the compass function in Google Maps is totally erratic and wrong, basically useless.
Here is what I noticed when using compass dependent apps:
If it is a based magnetic compass only, it works.
if it is a GPS based compass only, it works, although you must be moving over a certain speed for the GPS to detect directions.
If it is a acceleration (Gyro) based compass it is all screwed up.
I tested all the above scenarios with many GPS, compass, and map utilities and I can confirm that that is teh case.
here is an simple way you can test this:
use Google Maps (not Nav) to display a map while you are driving. you will notice that while the car is in motion the map orientation is correct and tracks you direction in relations to North. Once you stop for more then a few seconds, the GPS compass can not detect motion and you will see the orientation of the map (or the little blue triangle) shifts to a new direction sometime as wrong as 180 degrees!
I tried calibration, resting the A-GPS data, factory reset, you name it.. Nothing fixes this problem. I don't think it is a hardware problem because I had the same issue with an Atrix 4G..
From the research I did on line there are evidence that this effect all Motorola gingerbread phone, and possibly other makes as well.
This is not a new problem, and all the solutions I have found on line do not fix this problem.

I've tried all the calibration tips, but it just doesnt work because it isnt a problem with the compass. On dialing #*0*# I'm able to check if the compass is working fine on its own, and yes, its properly calibrated. The problem is with Google Maps and the Android OS.
I've even found a possible solution here:
http://androidforums.com/incredible-support-troubleshooting/79713-compass-calibration-problem.html
I worked out a fix that does not require a factory reset! It does require root and the Android SDK. Connect the phone to your computer using usb and run 'adb shell' once connected run the following commands:
su
cd /data/misc
rm AK8973Prms.txt
rm AK8973Prms.txt.tmp
reboot
This removes the saved calibration data. On reboot it will regenerate these files. In my research I found that on other phones the calibration data may be stored in a file called akmd_set.txt.
I hope this helps anyone else with this issue.

I'm quite positive that these solutions would work but they require root access. I would like to do a temporary root (root and then unroot) so that my warranty doesnt get voided. I've tried using SuperOneClick but it was unsuccessful (checked through SU checker). So is there any other way in which this could be done or solved?
Its running 2.3.6.

Hi
I have exactly that issue, always when you need your navigator walking. It happens with google maps navigator and with Copilot Live too.Just when walking, not driving. So you need to imagine where are you walking.
I asked in a Spanish forum (htcmania.com) but nobody talked about. So I thank it were from my rom (last Austrian with last CSC from the last Germany), our perhaps from the kernel (Ardatdat 1.8.1 to 1.8.3).

How? SuperOneClick has an Unroot option but it isnt rooting my phone. Can this (rooting and unrooting) be done with other rooting methods too?

Yes, you can root by flashing a rooted stock kernel which can be found in our forum easily and you can unroot by flashing the stock kernel after you're done.
I think SuperOneClick does not support galaxy r

Would flashing the stock kernel require me to restore a backup or would my phone data be intact? I'm asking this because I did the restore once when I did a device update and it was a messy procedure, it did not happen successfully. Sorry for being such a noob.

Ideally a kernel only affects the boot image. All other images like System, Data etc remain intact....so there's no question of you phone data getting messed.

Thanks a tonne, all of you!
I wish something could be done about this bug. Its been there since Android 2.3.

Happy to help! Just root your phone! Try if the solutions above do solve the bug and report back. Who knows you might squash an imp. bug

can any1 help abt this ???
Actually, navigation/directions doent work on my SGR, when i select get directions, it will show route, but the MY POSITION icon doent move at all...
where as in my friend's Sony Neo V (2.3.5) it works awesome, what is the problem in my phone

JH7 update removes unlock code

This has been observed in at least one post, buried deep within another thread, but I thought it is important enough to have its own thread.
The latest JH7 OTA update seems to remove the file containing the unlock code for the Captivate. I unlocked my phone a couple of weeks ago, and after receiving the upgrade I verified that the phone is still unlocked. However, the SGS Unlock app no longer finds the code. Presumably, other PC/Mac-basede unlock techniques will be affected, as they look for the unlock code in the same file.
Anybody else can confirm this? In a word (two, really), what now? I was about to buy another Captivate for my wife, but the only reason she was willing to get it instead of the iPhone 4 was the possibility to unlock it (we travel to Europe twice a year).
If I manually peek at the bml3 or nv_data files, I still see my unlock code after JH7. I haven't used any apps to unlock, but it sounds like they just need an update if they are failing.
Well, if you bought the phone today, it wouldn't have the JH7 update, I would presume. So, you can run the unlocker to get the code. It sounds like, though I cannot confirm because the update failed on my phone, that it just deletes a file with a number in it. If that's the case, it shouldn't be able to undo any existing unlocks, and there's no time limit once you have the code.
Then you better buy one now and extract the unlock code before you upgrade. It typically takes AT&T a few months to sell phones with new firmware.
Even though new firm ware makes current unlock method useless, it won't chang your unlock code.

Ok, so maybe the SGS unlock app fails but could be fixed in the future, or perhaps one of the other methods still works...

One question: are you rooted? I tried copying the nv_... file to the sd card using adb, but got a "permission denied" error.

Yup. That may be what is breaking the apps... I don't remember it needing it before to access /efs/nv_data.bin. I can read it after su though.
edit: If you want to try and get it manually, the following grep works for me, but I'm not exactly sure if it work on others...
su
busybox grep -E "^[0-9]{8}$" /efs/nv_data.bin
You should see 2 identical sets of numbers.

OK, so this is very good news.
To clarify (here's the noob asking...): rooting does *not* affect your ability to get the update, right? If all rooting does is install su & friends (and uninstall removes them), there should be no adverse consequences at all, especially if you unroot prior to getting the update. I'm just worried about the reports of updates failing (everything went smoothly for me, but I'm 100% stock and not rooted). Thanks!

I am rooted and the install went fine for me. I had not done any of the lag fixes, overclocking, or flashing custom ROMs though.
Same. Rooted before the update. It even stayed rooted after the update.
If the grep above doesn't work btw, look here for how to manually copy the files to your computer, and view the code using a hex editor: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761045 . Just remember you need to use "su" first now. Or just wait... One of the devs will probably update their app soon enough.
Ok, thanks! This helps a lot.

It could just that the servers are currently overloaded... take a look at the thread on successful updates; although there are still only a few reports, phones that did not have a lagfix at the time of the update did OK, and rooting does not seem to matter. In any case, it's not like your update failed: you haven't even downloaded it yet.

That makes sense, because the JH7 update changed the *permissions* of the nv_data file. So, even if you reflash the stock ROM, the permissions on that file stay the same.
BTW, I suppose this means that one way to fix this would be to create a very simple update.zip that changes the permissions on that particular file. Although, if you go down that route, you might as well root your phone, I guess!

Why would you use a code to flash it? Replace the Camera.apk file. Also what firmware are you on? Would be nice if you mentioned that aswell.
i update my i9003 to GB, i offen met camera errors, so i tried to flash it by code, but it cannot work, and currently my rom is xxkb3

I quote this from the KP9 Feedback thread, this has already been discussed, so please avoid making new threads, I will highlight the important part in bold. It's important that you look at the KP9 Flash guide to make sure your not missing any steps. Bootloader is a must to flash aswell.
1. Make all your backups using TB. Don't forget to move the TB folder to Ext_SD or PC after backing up.
2. Factory reset phone using manual code. (*2767*3855#)
3. Get into recovery mode and wipe all.
4. Now flash the new ROM as usual (latona and then the remaining 4 files.) Be sure not to make any lame errors here.
5. Factory reset again using manual code.
6. Now check to see if the power button functions and the phone reboots when you ask so. (It should work.)
7. Check camera. If you have a black screen, its okay.
8. Factory reset again using manual code.
9. Redo flash procedure again.
10. Factory reset again.
11. Check power button issue and camera. Both should be totally fine.
12. Press power button to lock and leave device for 10 mins. Now, press power button to check if the device wakes up as normal. It should. If you want to avoid the device being woken up by calls or texts or other notifications, just put it into flight mode and turn off Wi-Fi.
13. Root using SuperOneClick. It will show up Kernel Panic error in the end, but its no problem.
14. Just pull battery after that and restart phone. You should see SuperUser installed and working. Upgrade Busybox to 1.18.4 by Stericson.
15. Now install TB and go about your restoring business. DO NOT restore any system apps. Just restore User Apps and data.
16. If you didn't **** up any of the above, you should be up and running 2.3.4 without any issues (yet!).
yes, i tried this method, but it does not work for me, camera still keep black first, then camera failed message pops up... i am not sure if the camera is the same as i9000, then i can try the wave bin files. thx anyway

The firmware for your camera is now gone.. Take it your samsung service center and *do not* mention the secret menu for camera. Just say it stopped working.
Many of these menus are hidden for a reason..

Then given your acknowledgment that "no forum including above provides a solution" the general consensus (and multiple Google searches) -- seems to confirm that if one "updates" their camera firmware from the hidden menu -- that there is at present - no known, recovery - short of taking the phone to a samsung service center..
I just don't understand how re-asking the question is going to yield a different answer.. like the easy do-it-yourself solution is being withheld in favor of the more difficult one of taking the phone to the service center -- just waiting for someone to ask..

This root method works wonders nothing is more better then to learn to manually root your device. Of course you can use the tool provided in the, the development forums, but I personally enjoy learning to do things without the use of developed tools.

Use the manual method by Indirect if you want to have more control over what you're doing (also does not void your warranty) and definitely read read read
I would recommend at least going through the whole "user" section of xda-university before even touching your phone, it has tons of useful information

Na i was using you shift rootility tutorial, but i screwed up and put the wrong PG06IMG.zip in the $path. there was 2 versions a 12.7MB and a 227MB one. i didn't realize that i needed to do the 227MB to downgrade first then after it's downgraded then use the 12.7MB one.
so i stopped mid way through and tried to boot normally, which sent me into a boot loop. doing a factory restore fixed the boot-loop and now i am starting over again.

No worries about responding right away, this isn't a huge issue just something I'd like to fix if possible. It is my only phone but I don't need GPS daily so no rush.

Marshall London root?

Hey guys,
I really don't know where to ask this since this phone doesn't have a forum or anything - at least that I know of. If there is one I am glad if you can point me to it.
So, is there any way to root this device? I only bought it as a second phone for listening to music but I'd really like to root it, so, do you know anyhting?

Try King Root latest version. Not Kingoroot, but King Root.
KingoRoot, King Root not working. Anything else?
Thanks for reporting. Hoping for a root option before pulling the trigger...

not any news on this? i would love to root this phone and have a custom firmware. mine is full of bugs thats make it useless as a phone and camera, the only good thing about mine is the sound!
Me too want to root this phone, anyone know? Kingoroot & King Root cant root. After failed to root, it popup to ask them for help. It's around 150+ people already interested to root this phone.
This was essential for me. I have given up on purchasing this device. Based on monitoring the support page, it also seems the manufacturer is slow to develop updates. This device is starting to look like a manufacturer's experiment. I hope they do create an updated device and open to the US market...
Edit: Typo

Is there already an option for rooting because there has been a software update but KingRoot doesn't work
If I were you, I'd try to flash root binaries via the recovery menu. Keep in mind, that I don't have that phone. If that fails, you can wait for the custom recovery and you can try to install binaries from there. Keep me updated.

Yes it is extremely slow development on this phone, since i did get it at the release there have been like 4-5 updates and none major update just some bugfixes that actually made the phone worse.
The support at MP is good fast answers but their not that good at helping you, they basically just copy&paste a standard Q&A.
My phone does stop vibrate occasionally, notification led is only functional sometimes, random reboots, Led flash is unusable on taking photos it does blend the lens so photos get almost black and some minor bugs, did contact support about this and they was not able to do anything due to that this is a gift from them. I had to pay for a shipping and repair myself.
I was hoping for root and custom rom, but as it seems that it will never happen i have an nice looking paperweight.

A custom rom might be a stretch due to the unique nature of the device, closed source code for the DAC, among other things. I have had trouble finding source code for this device, using code from similar devices tend to run into kernel panic issues.
I am working on a way to have flashable system images and a custom recovery on this device... and also a way to return the device completely to stock. The good news is that once you have binaries, you can use Fastboot to restore partitions. I have been able to re-flash experimental recovery builds with the original without any issue. No need to unlock or root.
And yes, root is possible. Kingoroot worked for me and I was able to successfully remove Kingo for SuperSU using the built in root swap tool in SuperSU.
I plan on starting a new thread for everything that I have for the Marshall London when I have everything working. Root, recovery, flashable ZIPs and stock images.
It may not be a device that is widely used but it definitely has a niche. I use it exclusively as an MP3 player because of its amazing sound. I also will be using it as a travel phone when I go to Europe. Shame the phone didn't find a larger market or even make it to North America because it's a very unique phone.

You now have root and a working recovery for the Marshall London.
