Since this is my first post, just recently registered but I have used the site many times for troubleshooting, I will introduce myself. My name is Austin and I am a Mechanical Engineering student in Indiana.
I have a GS3 on AOKP mr1 milestone 2
and an unrooted old nexus 7
My GS3 has been great and with the help of a friend I rooted it and have been installing different roms (mainly AOKP) but just today my power button stopped working. I have searched the forums and got a lot of different threads, but no definite solutions. My button is doing the "seesaw" thing like I saw on another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2023158) and will not lock my screen or turn the phone off.
I went to vzw and I am still under the manufacturer warranty, but the guy told me that I needed to unroot my phone and make sure there is no signs of it being rooted. Is this possible to do without the power button?
I also saw on a the same thread mentioned earlier that someone said just buy the button online it snaps in. Is this true and how hard is this to do or will it even solve my problem? I would really like to just replace my button but I am afraid of turning my phone off.
Speaking of turning my phone off, as soon as I noticed my button not working my brain stopped and I took off my back cover and popped out the battery. First thought that popped into my head was how stupid can you be? If your power button doesn't work why would you even think about taking out the battery!?!? But believe it or not it turned back on right away.
The button still wouldn't work after turning it on. It will not lock/unlock the phone, bring up the power menu, or turn off the phone and I have been too afraid to take out the battery again.
Has anyone else had this problem and what should I do?

How about downloading a stock ROM and just flashing that? If your on AOKP you should able to reboot into recovery from the home screen on the phone then just flash the stock ROM. If its rooted just use the stock TW launcher to HIDE the SUPERUSER OR SUPERSU app from the app drawer. Just hit the menu button after opening app drawer and select HIDE APPLICATIONS. if the stock ROM has SUPERSU you can always choose the FULL UNROOT option in the settings of that app and it will delete the app.

On the power button thing I don't know, but if your phone is under the manufacturer warranty like you say, you can always just call Verizon and they will just send one to your house then you just ship your old one back. That way nobody sees the device except you. I've sent back rooted and ROM'D phones and have had 0 issues.
That is, if you can't fix the button yourself like you would like.
Yeah well apparently it's a "known issue".
Sudden death syndrome or some nonsense.
Go Samsung.

You are an idiot for sending back rooted and ROMed phones
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 4
Before I flashed my phone for the very first time I made a back up on CWM of my stock rom, but I really don't want to send back a rooted phone. I assume that if my phone really does go through an audit at vzw that they would catch that fairly quick and charge me full price for my refurb
redwings - did you have this problem or do you know anyone who has replaced the button and does that even help?
Update -
I think my switch has gone bad. I took the back casing off and the 10 or so small phillips screws that hold on an outer frame and took my button out and tried to press the button in and it would not lock or unlock the phone still :/
I am not sure what to do now. Idk if I can replace this switch or not.
Does anyone know if I can send it to someone who can do it for a reasonable price?
Has anyone else just flashed a stock rom on their rooted phone and sent it back to vzw? Sounds like a bad idea but almost better than waiting until nov 2014 when my contract is up
Mobile tech videos does the power switch repair. I had mine done (out of warranty) and it's been great ever since. Pretty easy process, buy the repair service through the website, mail off the phone according to their instructions, and get it back a few days later. You can choose to pay more for rush processing and faster return shipping if you want to.

I don't understand your statement. How is he a idiot? If he played for a device that comes with a warranty shouldnt it be honored? You saying he should flash stock rom etc is being just as dishonest. On top of that he even opened up the phone to check the power button. That also voids warranty does it not? If sending back a rooted/romed phone is not acceptible by verizon they will send the phone back. Theres no way they will charge you full retail without the phone itself being PHYSICALLY DAMAGED. when they send you a warranty replacement they specifically state everything you need to know. Your a idiot for calling someone a idiot.
Hypocrisy at its finest.

And you expecting them to take a phone that's been opened up is any different? He said he's done it twice. So obviously there was no problem the first time because he's done it once more.
Your a fool if you think they can't tell the phone has been flashed or tampered with, even with your triangle away. Its no different.

Oh okay. So what OP said prior to your post was "Took the caseing off and the 10 or so small..." Meaning he's already opened up the phone.
THEN you post that you would just "Use triangle away to reset..."
You didn't say that? Knowing the phone has already been opened and thus "Voiding" his warranty.
You called me a idiot for returning a rom'd phone? How is your statement regarding him returning a phone that's been opened up any different.? I agree with @Billbill123 at the hypocrisy statement.
I admit I didn't read the whole OP. I didn't see that he has taken the phone apart. He has Voided his warrenty by doing that.

I also have a faulty power switch on my phone. I ordered a new button, though once it arrived, I realized this is not the part I needed. I need the actual switch from the circuit board. Does anyone know of a reputable company through which I can quickly acquire a new power switch?

For $40 it seems really reasonable and I can activate my old phone while mine is gone. I e-mailed them my problem and they said it will fix it or money back.
Thanks again to everyone who has helped me so far! I will try to give an update after I send my phone off and maybe a review so then if this topic comes up for more people this thread will help them and they won't have to post a new one!

Hello there, I recently installed serendipity 7, everything was going good for 2 days then the power button stopped working, I read that was a common problem and people were saying to try take pics with the camera but my power button totally stopped working.
I couldn't reinstall it because once i was in recovery mode, i couldn't use the power to select re install.
so i managed to reset it back to 2.1, then i updated to froyo hoping that would reset the power button, but it still doesn't work.
looks like I will have to buy a new phone unless someone knows of a fix, any help would be greatly appreciated
Why would you need to BUY a new one?
that is a hardware issue so you will need a new one...but that is a manufacturer defect and your phone should still be under warranty. Just call up at&t(or rogers) or samsung explain the issue you should get it replaced without any hassle.

what I meant was I'll have to pay the $50 to get a new one, its not really a manu defect when it stopped working from the custom rom
DON'T TELL THEM ABOUT THE CUSTOM ROM!! ARE YOU CRAZY? THATS AN AUTOMATIC VOIDING OF THE WARRANTY!! just play DUMB say you are on stock 2.2 (for added effect mispronounce froyo, say froya or something)
plus i dont think the custom rom broke the button at all, if it was the rom (software related) flashing back to stock would have removed the broken software and your power button would work. and not only did you replace it with a stock firmware...but you flashed 2 and its still broken.
its a hardware problem.
lol no not gonna tell them bout the rom I'm just sayin

Hey guys
I gave my cousin my infuse 4g, which was running gtg's Infused latest ROM.
According to her, she was at the mall and she pulled out the phone from her pocket and all she saw was infinite logo bootloop.
At first to me it seemed like a soft brick but it's not recoverable.
When I put the battery in, it goes into infinite samsung logo bootloop.
Three button combo to CWM doesn't work, the download mode jig also does not work.
when i put the download jig in, the yellow downloading mode logo shows up for 2 seconds and then the phone turns off. and the process repeats.
When i put the charging cable in, it infinitely loops the "battery picture", turning off 1 second later everytime and turning back on...
I plan on taking it back to the AT&T Service Shop for a chance at claiming a replacement device.
So here's my question.
I've tried everything I can to get this thing back to a working state, but to no avail.
Does this mean that the engineers at the service center will also not be able to get it back up (meaning that they won't be able to tell that i've voided the warranty)?
I mean, something is seriously wrong with this infuse. it won't even go to download mode.
I bought this device back in July 2011, so I'm still under that 1 year manufacturer's warranty.
Do you guys think I will be able to get a replacement device?
Thanks guys!

jhong91,
It is not often but several other users have reported similar hard power loops that you're describing.
If you go back through the Q/A thread, there are a few with this.
Some users have succeeded in restoring their device via jtag method - by mobiletech or something like that.
Others opted for the replacement and was successful too.
Look through the last 20-40 pages...(garen21, brazcub may have similar situation ) Others have been told that it was due to corrosion of the battery terminal or bad circuit board.

Hello,
thanks for the reply!
if the problem really is, as you may have kindly pointed out, with the circuit board or bad battery terminal, do you think it's unrecoverable even by the AT&T technicians (or mobiletechvideo's jtag service)?
Also, this is my first time dealing with warranties on smartphone.
If they happen to find out that I have voided the warranty by rooting the phone, the worst thing that could happen is not getting a replacement device right? they can't charge me or penalize me right?
Thanks in advance!
You will be OK.
I bricked mine and sent it in, they didn't even realize it was rooted and sent me a new one. Just don't mention it man. Also its better if you take it to a smaller att store, they seem to be a bit cooler then the big corporate stores

Hi, my headphone jack has always been pick about having things plugged in just right, usually the slightest bit of ling screws it up. Finally today, it just started giving serious static in right side. when music or any sound starts it goes away, but the volume is very low on that side. It only does it when there is power (battery is in), so I think it is a bad connection in there. I have some questions regarding this.
1. How horrible is the Motorola service? they say 5-7 days, but is that really the case (In the U.S.). My warranty is still good, I'll just flash back to stock.
2. will opening the phone up void my warranty? I am somewhat experienced with electronics, so I could probably fix it, but I don't wantt to void the warranty in case it doesn't work.
3. I also have a stuck pixel on my screen that has been there since I got the phone (New). Will they fix that as well even though I can only select one problem on the application form? Should I mention it as well so that they might fix it?
Thank you,
-lkrasner
P.S. Unfortunately this means that I might be unable to do much for a while when I send my phone away. I hope you guys get ICS without me, and I will be waiting to try it out myself.

Just do a mis-flash or delete the system partition and take it into a store and tell/show them it does not boot, that you picked it up off the charger and it was like that, and you need a replacement. They will send you a replacement and you have 30 days to return your "broken" phone. I have done this 4 times with my A2s.

But my AT&T warranty is up?!?! will it still work? I still have my 1 year moto warranty.
Edit: If this does work I owe you something huge, plus I would get my screen problem fixed
EDIT 2: would I be better off just deleting something that would just stop if from booting past the boot logo (big M) so it wouldn't be so obvious that I just killed it with is basically sayins so on the fastboot screen. If so what could I delete that wouldn't prove I had rooted, probably nothing now that I say that.

That is the Moto warranty, AT&T will just help you "file" it since it is done through them anyhow.
Just don't call moto yourself.

Do anything that will make it either boot loop or stick on the dual core/moto boot screen. Whacking system/boot should do that, and you can still flash it back to stock before you send it back if you really want to.... they are just going to fully refurb it and re-sell it...
The secret is to act dumb, pretend like you know nothing bout flashing and this site... just act like it just went nuts and started this, and it will not boot.
Ask for the advanced replacement.

OK, and they will not be able to see root then, and if they flash it back to stock it will no longer be rooted, so I should be fine. I opened a service request with Moto earlier, do you think that will be a problem? Should I wait until it expires so they don't get suspicious that I bricked it on purpose.

if it is borked when you take it to the store they can't see that it is rooted cause it won't boot... all they are going to do it call their 1-800 number and help you file a support request... then the person the phone will let you know of the "requirements" and ask if the phone has any visible water damage, yadda yadda...
Then they will send you a new phone and you should get it in 3 or so days and you are supposed to send the old one back in the SAME box... so you will already have flashed the fxz and been using the phone the whole time you waited for the new one to show up... just don't forget to send it back... I did and waited until 25 days later, and I was bugged mercillessly by att...
Just make sure you factory wipe and take out your sim and SDcard, and battery door... they do not send anything but the core of the phone, no batt or batt door or anything.

@jim on playing dumb, hilarious ..i do that when i upgrade my phone.im such an ass when i upgraded to a2 from xperia x10 that i didnt even bother restoring it to stock, i left cm7 on it,custom bootlogo ,said "free xperia team" on boot.i just pretended i didnt know what happend. it was so enjoyable.
service rep - "it appears to be rooted"
My response - "What do you mean rooted? It has roots like a plant?".
@krasner
You worry to much, they cant prove anything.just brick it and youll be fine.u could even play dumb as u crack a smile while doing so and they still really cant do anything to prove u did it and have to exchange it.

worked beautifully! I deleted build.prop and default.prop, so it just went to a black screen after the moto logo. when the guy called the warranty center he said it was "extremely defective and clearly in need of replacement."
After I walked out, I went home, booted into bp tools, taking me to cwm and used adb to push the two files back. The phone already shipped.
However I am thinking of selling it BNIB and getting something else, any ideas what I could get for it

worked beautifully!

Hello XDA Forums, long time lurker, and about time I started contributing to the community.:good:
Anyway, I received my Galaxy S3 via VZW preorder a few weeks ago. It ran like a charm. However, as of today, the messenger app keeps crashing, and no longer responds/works. The question of whether or not it was because I rooted it caused the problem is irrelevant, but I digress...
I called Verizon about the problem and they are sending me a replacement in overnight shipping, and as of now they don't know it's rooted.
Whenever i boot the phone it has the custom symbol with the lock on it, will that mean my warranty will be voided and I will have to pay for the full price? Although I ordered overnight shipping it won't be shipped for another 2 days due to the fact that tomorrow is sunday. It is still rooted ATM. Thanks in advance guys! Hope to be a long-time active member here.
You need to Odin back to stock. Also before doing that make sure that your flash counter in download mode is at 0 and not at custom stuff. If it is use triangle away app v 1.7 to get rid of the flash count. THEN Odin back to stock.
Yes, if you send it back rooted they will void it.

The flash counter appears in the download screen. Press and hold power, vol down, and home button until boot.

I have returned 2 rooted VZW phones for hardware failure. DId it through the mail. No problem. I believe that there was a court ruling that messing with software on phones doesn't void hardware warraanty but I'm too lazy to google it right now. GL.
Hi. long story short. I got my nexus 5. Probably about almost 3 weeks. And I liked it and all, got it rooted, custom ROM etc etc etc..... Today I was playing a random game. No problem at all. Started using it like normal. Then out of nowhere, tremendous lag(maybe 40 seconds) then phone turns off. Then it reboots. I probably thought, some Roms have these issues. I can live with it. Then out of nowhere while in the middle of a call...... it decides to turn off. I try turning it on, and get nothing. I try charging it. Nothing at all. Luckily I have my nexus 4. But truthfully. I bought a nexus 5 off some guy who bought it from the site. I still have the box and all. But if this is a hardware issue only Google can fix. Is there something that has to be done to get it sent to them? I hate the fact that it was completely out of nowhere. Nothing wet, hardcase cover, screen protector. Everything was secure. Haven't had any problem at all till right now!
Is there a solution to this? I have tried going into boot loader. Download or w.e it is. Connecting it to a computer and nothing at all works!!! I'm starting to panic!!! Is there anything else I can do?!?!
Does it have warranty at Google? You can fastboot it and download the stock rom via google and return to stock. If that doesn't work RMA it. If it doesn't have warranty then use it as a building block in your backyard coz that's one of the risks of buying a phone from another person at 2nd hand; you'll never know what that person did to the phone.

If you purchase a nexus five other than a Google Play Store the Google warranty is no longer valid unless the device is given as a quote on quote gift as of this you will have to wear it is all into dealing with LG into RMA the device

Crap.... Read about the Completely wipe phone... *Sigh*... I have a white nexus 5 as well that went through this. But for some reason it let's me get to the boot loader at least.... Possible way of using a toolkit to fix it? I really don't want to delete all those pics and other stuff I have on my phone. But if that's what I must do then I guess its better than having a paper weight.

Well since its already a paperweight ATM. I got some tools to open the phone. Should I at least try to see if something went wrong? Like battery or anything ?

If you're saying that you want to open your N5 as in literally open it, you're wasting your time. Accept the fact that you have to full wipe through fastboot and when it does open, use Dropbox or any other app that saves your pictures/contacts/apps when you sync it so when you have this problem again, wiping won't be an issue. I can't even begin to fathom why you would literally open the phone when clearly it's a software issue.
EDIT: or find the person who sold it to you and demand a replacement IF it has a one year warranty though that's more of a hassle.

Uhh... OP flashed custom firmware on it so how is it the seller's fault? Even if it was on warranty, OP voided it when he flashed the custom ROM. This is a risk that everyone on XDA is or should be aware of.
@ImHereToSaveTheDay- If you can get into the bootloader or recovery you can likely save the phone. Try flashing the factory image. If you can't get into the bootloader you might need to have the phone JTAG'd. When you connect it to your computer what pops up under device manager? If it comes up as QHSUSB_DLOAD then it's hard bricked and needs to be JTAG'd.

software wont brick the phone, especially software thats made for the nexus 5. and google will still replace a phone if its the hardwares issue, even if you are rooted running custom software. that risk that you say everyone should be aware of doesnt really exist if its the hardwares issue. and if its software, it can always be fixed.

That's not entirely true. My One X had to be JTAG'd because of software. Granted it was different circumstances than this, but it certainly wasn't a hardware fault.
If it is a hardware issue then yes, it will still be covered by warranty, but running any type of custom firmware does come with a risk, Nexus phone or not. As it stands, OP doesn't know what the problem is, so calling the seller and demanding a replacement isn't quite appropriate. That's all I was really commenting on.
After playing around with it and all something even weirder happened. My phone started vibrating. The screen is completely off but the calls still go through now. Its weird to me because I can actually answer the calls with the phone's screen completely off as well as hear them. Does this mean... The phone boots up and everything. Just won't show anything on screen. Is this like a digitizer or something related type of problem now that I'm facing ?
Also I've managed to reach the guy. He told me he would have a look at it if its still not fixed by Wednesday.
