does this blog post by Jean-Baptiste Kempf (Aug 28) mean that VLC is ready for RT?? - Microsoft Surface

http://www.jbkempf.com/blog/post/2013/VLC-2.1.0-rc1
I haven't seen any of the news organizations comment on the last blog post yet by JBK. He mentions Windows RT in one of the bullets, but I'm not tech savy enough to interpret the lingo.
Can anyone help me out in translating his blog post in relation to windows RT?

Says WinRT not windows RT. Somewhat confusing but the 2 are not one and the same. However now that WinRT is cracked I doubt it will be long until Windows RT is also cracked. As it stands right now VLC is not on the windows store for x86 either, I expect both ARM and x86 versions to be coming very soon though. Source code is there so it might well be possible to compile it for RT manually right now.

if you have time, can you explain the difference?

WinRT - Correct term for windows 8/RT metro apps, or rather the framework they run on. WinRT is a set of functions and libraries etc that all metro/modern/start apps use in order to run in both windows 8 and windows RT.
Windows RT - Windows 8 on ARM processors.
I think winRT is meant to mean windows runtime. Windows rt doesn't really mean anything though.

Ah, but it does. It means that Microsoft's branding folks are *still* braindead. They'l be the last people left after the zombie apocalypse; nothing they have would be of interest.
Seriously, this is from the people who brought you "Windows Phone 7 Series" instead of something like Xphone or Zune Phone or some such. I thought they canned that guy, but apparently it wasn't confined to him...

Is there a way to build this state of progress from source to test it? I only found a tut for cross-compiling it for old arm (pda).
Cheers

They only posted source to VLC itself, not the MinGW toolchain required to target WinRT so we can't test windows 8/RT app support yet on x86 or ARM.

Oh Thank you very much for your answer (so fast). So good to know. Still waiting for a good free mkv player. "mobile.hd media player" (trail expired) and "PowerDVD mobile" (trail running) are very very good to play mkv, but sadly not free...

download VLC on another PC. Control+R. In the window which appears click Add. Click the little arrow on the convert/save button, click convert. Leave it at default settings (or play with it if you wish), set the output file to "file.mp4" of course changing file for the name you want. Hit start. Takes awhile though (about as long as the original file itself takes to play sometimes).
In my life I have never come across an mkv file, ever. Convert it to something else, play on RT.

Hey, I'm aware of that we can play mp4 files on our RT, but sadly my hd-movie-collection is 500GB+ and it would be hard to convert all the videos. There are also some players for the RT, which converts mkv to mp4 just before you want to watch, and it also takes a while. I was just stunned as I saw, that our RT is able to play that 10GB+-mkv-file flawlessly (with the mentioned players), without any framedrops or stucking or audio-lagging. So I think, I just wait a bit...

It wouldn't be that hard to convert your MKV files to MP4. No re-encoding is necessary, just a re-writing of the files in MP4 containers. It takes only a few minutes/GB. Just find a converter that will batch process. I think that MKV/AVI to MP4 (for non-RT Windows) does that. It'll take all night or all afternoon to go through 500GB, but it won't require any supervision.
Keep in mind, though, that a main reason why MKV is the preferred format for ripped movies is that it has better subtitle and audio track support (ex. more than one audio track, whether it be two different languages or, say, 2.0 English and 5.1 English) than MP4 does. You might lose these features on any movies that have them if you convert them. If your movies don't use those features, or if the only subtitled movies that you have have the subtitles burned into the video, then you should be fine.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot Though most of my movies are dual-lang, I would try some of them to be put in a new container with single-lang

FYI, I just tested on a movie of mine, and my initial estimation was quite a bit off, so my mistake on that. It takes several minutes per GB, not 10-30 seconds (it can take 10-30 seconds for a 350MB, low-quality rip, just not for a full GB). So, we're talking about a batch process that will take the better part of a day to go through 500GB, but, still, that's not so bad (considering the sheer size), since you don't need to babysit it any. You might start a batch of the entire collection and let it go for a day or you might split it up and do, say, 200GB overnight one night, 200GB overnight the next night and so on, so as not to tax the system too much or make it unusable for work or play during the day.

WinRT is the API used for start apps. Windows RT is windows 8 running on ARM (so both contain winrt). You wouldn't be the first to mix the 2, nor the last, frankly microsoft shouldnt have given the 2 such similar names.
I'm guessing because they dont mention ARM or windows RT, its winrt on x86 only at this time.

Thank you soo much for your answer. I'm so happy that a well known member has given me the answer, and I'm so sad they we cannot profit from that vlc 2.1 on our arm

Need all your Help to push MS / avi transcoding issue

Hi Everyone,
I m kindly asking you to help me push MS into fixing the avi/xvid issue since conversion times are too long.
edit Several members have also raised concern that the Zune software transcodes videos where there is really no need!

I have created a post on the official MS support forums and the fellow users have supported the post but MS is trying not to give a proper answer on the issues unless people reply enough or click the "I would like an answer too" button. The post seems to be ending up unanswered and pushed back. I need to let the post grab MS attention!
I would like MS to escalate the issue internally but I need more input! So please be so kind!
I suggest that we could do this for other issues as well!!!
Their forum relies on Live IDs so it is just about entering your username. (Doesn't take long)

It can be fixed quite easily.
1) Write down the spec of your computer on a piece of paper.
2) Go to your local PC shop
3) Hand them the piece of paper and ask for something faster at encoding video
4) Happiness
Yep. Crap computers suck at transcoding video. Even a better graphics card would work much better, since lots of GPUs these days can offload much of the conversion.
Some notebooks were sold without multi-core processors (but are still 64-bit, some people assume 64-bit = multi-core), and lots of consumers have things like mismatched ram sticks and the like that can reduce their computer performance for these types of tasks.
Thanks a lot guys!!!! Appreciated!
It looks like they are still ignoring the issue. I think I might try to upvote the thread tomorrow again.
My general issue is that I am accessing different PCs all the time. Let it be work, uni, friends, or my home laptop. So I generally just need a fast way to get stuff onto the device.
Maybe we get lucky and they enable it again
I personally don't think this issue should have a high priority, as Zune software reencode your file on the fly.
Even at Microsoft, ressources are limited, and there are lots a other stuff I would like first (custom ringtones, multitask, silverlight and flash on the browser...)
My 2 cents.

The issue here is that it works on the Zune HD without re encoding or demuxing and the same applied to the wp7 emulator until they decided to take the feature out...
Maybe it will be a OEM specific feature?!
Name one reason for DivX /XviD support, except that you want to play your pirated movies...
Transcoding XviD shouldn't take much time with a modern computer.
Why do they have to be pirated? There are those of us who have huge DVD/BD libraries ripped to xvid (and later on MKV). Personally I have several hundred DVDs that I have painstakingly converted to xvid for digital storage and easy access from my HTPCs.

You could make the same assumption about mp3s. I started ripping in 99.. I don't have the resources to rerip my music into something better now. And in a real case scenario I don't want to be told 2 years from now that an MP3 player doesn't play mp3s anymore because they are "all" considered to be pirated .....
I have pleny of DVD's/BD that on top of normal movie have a digital copy that can be used with portable players. They come in many formats on those discs and all require to enter a code before 1st play so it can check if it is valid copy.
I do that and then can play them on my PC even via Zune. Formats I have are WMV, AVI, MP4 and DIVX.
My death race in wmv that works on windows 7 fresh install (with no extra codes and net access) is converted by zune. Annoying as zune officially supports WMV and even plays that movie.
Two mp4 movies (Mummy and Mummy 2) from the same Box set one just copies and works one is converted from mp4 to mp4. Some Divx movies are "converted" but it lasts 1 to 2 min aka it only changes extension while some are properly reconverted but resolution or quality are the same afterwards (720p or standard resolution no matter). There is a problem there.

[Q] Netflix?

Netflix plays on silverlight.
There is a linux silverlight project called moonlight.
Android is Linux.
My searching has found 0 tutorials on how to get all of that together so I can stream netflix movies onto my captivate.
I did see the article about netflix saying in 2011 that there will be a netflix branded app on some devices but it doesnt list devices so not even sure if that would help.
Moonlight doesn't work with Netflix even on Ubuntu or Fedora, or any other Linux build. On normal Linux, even when switching the UA string to one that identifies as Windows, it still isn't compatible. To watch Netflix on Linux you have to create a VM with Windows and use Silverlight there.
It is a nice idea though. I hear Netflix is coming out with an Android client here soon. They maybe waiting on Gingerbread or Honeycomb.
So I guess the question here is this: What would it take to get virtualbox ported to android??

More RAM in our devices.
Two things to add
1. Oracle needs to stop suing Google (VirtualBox was Sun and now Oracle) for VirtualBox to be even remotely ported to something like Android.
2. Android to stop fragmenting so badly that companies like Netflix has to write specific versions of the app for the platform (refer to Angry Birds dev about the topic if you are curious).
Thanks guys - good information...
If Netflix comes out for a phone such as the droid incredible but not for the captivate because the droid has a "DRM" path or something.
Will it be easy for people to "steal" the app so we can get it to work on captivate? Or is it hard to do stuff like that?

No doubt, that's one MAJOR factor thats held back Netflix for soo long on Android... DRM. With Android being as open as it is, Netflix's content providers won't allow it without some kind of strong DRM. It would probably be as easy to "barrow" as Blockbuster from a VZW Android phone.
VirtualBox won't run Windows on a phone. Not enough memory, and CPU emulation from ARM to x86 is crazy slow on something like a phone CPU, no matter if it's 1GHz or 1.28GHz like mine. The UI for an emulated XP, for example, would be like a seriously laggy powerpoint presentation.
We're best off not even thinking about it until an official client is announced.

That's not an issue. EVERY Android phone is capable of displaying streaming video. Even the 528MHz MSM7200 based phones can handle streams of up to 1500Kb/s.
Even if the phone is capable of streaming video, Androids fragmentation is getting in the way of the streaming software. For example, the android ustream app does not work on the Galaxy S.

Again, that has nothing to do with fragmentation. That app is in Beta, so bugs on different builds of Android are 100% expected.

[Q] DVD digital copies

The kids have a few DVD's that allow you to transfer a digital copy to a mobile device, i have transfered one to my PC as WMV but it does not play on the TF .Should i be selecting the I pod option or should i re code the WMV and if so with what format
thanks for any help
Neither will work as most downloaded digital copies are drm protected. Only way to play them is to strip the drm off which is easier said then done
yeah as lordgodgeneral said, no DVD copy will ever work on android because they all have either iTunes, Sony, or WMP DRM in them.
The only way to get your DVDs onto the tablet is to strip the DRM from the digital copies, or rip the DVD to a video file.

any guides on this and what the best format is ?
Handbreak to rip the movie. Dvd43 can remove copyright protection if you have a 32 bit copy of windows. Anydvd will remove copyright protection on 32 and 64 bit, but cost $69.
I've been using acidrip (which is a simple to use wrapper around mencoder (linux)) for dvds. The avi's play cleanly on transformer; though there is a bit of distortion (I'm beginning to think the transformer pixels are not square) but the videos play without any lag et all.
Haven't tried blu-rays yet; not sure if there is a good solution for linux.
What format to RIP DVD's to for playing on Transformer
I just got my Transformer and I would like to rip some of the Kids and my movies for the long car trips. I was looking into getting DVDFAB DVD Ripper. What format should I rip my DVD's into to run on the Transformer using MoboPlayer? My computer is Windows 7 64 Bit and mostly I have are DVD's and would be loading them to the microSD Card.

I've had great success with DVD Catalyst 4, which enables you to rip DVDs (including DRM'ed ones) as well as convert existing video files. There are no specific Transformer profiles (yet), but use the Xoom HQ2 profile and you're good to go. Well worth the $9.95.

dvd fab is fine for ripping the movie it even has option to convert to mp4 for mobile device (but you have to pay for that option).so whats the best setting to convert rips for the transformer

Not that it helps the OP in the slightest, but this can be done on certain Android implementations. For example, my Galaxy Tab 7" can play DRM'd WMP titles.

Honestly this topic is turning into a pretty good place to find out how to work DVDs on the transformer. Hope it stays around since a lot of people are going to need this.
Personally i've used AnyDVD and CloneDVD mobile in the past, but handbreak is a lot better.
i haven't tried DVD catalyst, but if it has a profile for honeycomb, i may have to check that one out. and for only $10 thats a steal.
Another vote for DVD catalyst. Some really good results. Using the Xoom/Honeycomb profile.
Still working of ripping Toy Story 3 though. I own all on DVD, and it would have been great to take TS3 with me to keep the the little-un quiet. He's now addicted to Ice Age, so {{{raspberry}} to you Disney.
I'll second DVD Fab as well, simple and easy to use. 1Click DVD works well also, it really is one click (minus 1 time setup and fiddling).
What's a good solution for blu-rays ?

The Toy Stories are a bit picky. 1 and 2 (platinum edition) do work in the current beta, TS3, track 19 should be the correct one. Have a look in the "Problem DVD" section on my website. When I run into issues with DVDs, I list them there (along with what is needed to make them work)

The one I have is the bluray + DVD combo Special Edition.
When the selection box shows, it (for some reason) doesn't show times, but with track 40 selected (should be selected by default) just click OK. Scanning will start then restarts to a different scanning mode because the dvd is picky, and after that, the conversion should work fine.
I attached a screenshot of it running on my system using the standard Xoom profile.
If for some reason your DVD is different, you can use VLC or PowerDVD or something to play the DVD on your PC, get to the point where you are actually in the movie, and then look for the title # or track #. This is the the track to use.

Correct, the Transformer profiles are copies of the Xoom profiles. Since it uses the same hardware internally (tegra2) and runs the same OS, it has the same capabilities and limitations regarding video playback.

Playing Flac

Any ideas? I presume this would need an app.
Tim
My entire music collection is in FLAC format so if Windows RT cannot play it - at all - then that is a problem for me. Windows 8 Pro on the desktop doesn't properly play it(wthout additional third party filters or apps etc.) so I'm not expecting Windows RT to play nice.
Let's hope some good Windows RT apps come out soon for this purpose. My Android tablets and smartphones all play FLAC using the built in apps I just kindof expected it to be there.
Although popular in the Linux space (which Android is built on), FLAC gets relatively little attention from the commercial OS vendors. You *could* transcode it to WMA-Lossless if you don't mind storing each song twice, I guess...
Implementing an app to decode and play FLAC would be fairly easy, aside from the hassle of implementing a decent media player UI (not trivial, even for developers that supposedly know how to do GUIs). Better would be to just implement an installable codec, but I'm not sure if that's even possible on RT and it might not work in Store apps even on Win8.

List ofverified tablets that can play HVEC H265 files without a hickup.

I am searching hi and low for a tablet that can handle HVEC H265 files without studdering, I rather prefer the android based tablets, I have the Nvidia Shield Tablet and plays them well but the battery life when playing them is awful.
If any of you have any experiences with your own devices that you can share, please do, it will help.
I have been searching for this for quite awhile all over, and I find it amazing that someone have not thought of making a list of existing tablet devices that can play HEVC H265.
Another question, why is the Nvidia table shield out of stock for quite awhile now?
Help will be appreciated.
no one is having bad experiences with the new codecs and their tablets?
