Stock vs Custom ROM - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

After using custom ROM for 2 months now I quiet fed up. I have been using mainly Carbon, tried also CM10.1 but I have persistent problems:
- bluetooth handset is pretty much unusable. In 75% of the cases when I connect it the phone freezes. I have to shut it down and start it again. Most of the times I have to repeat the procedure multiple times.
- Poor battery life. I know that Photon Q is not a champion in the battery department but I can not survive a day of periodically synchronizing mail in the background + some browsing + 1h bluetooth audio.
- Application freezing. Touchdown always freezes when I compose a mail for more than a 3 minutes.
- When on bluetooth and listening to music and call comes in, the phone freezes either during the call or after the call has ended
I was hoping when CM10.1 is announced stable there will be no more problems but this didn't happen and now the development is shifted to 10.2 and I don't want to wait any more. After monitoring my phone use for a few days I started to wonder "do I really need a custom ROM"? Hence the thread. Definitely pure stock is not an option and I see here are a few modified ROMS based on the stock but I would like to save myself some time in testing .
What I expect from the stock based ROM is:
- Possibility to hide the buttons! This is absolute must. I can not stand the buttons eating my screen space.
- PIE control (LMT seems to be working quiet nicely although the CARBON PIE is the best)
- CM Themes! I would like to change the battery and clock colours. I have the Android blue colour for the notification bar:silly: Changing the wallpaper and icons is not enough for me.
- longer battery life - one day easily
- stability and reliability - I should be able to trust my phone
- functioning bluetooth
- removal of the Sprint crapware ( I am using GSM moded phone) I guess this can be achieve by uninstalling the corresponding apps.
Could you please recommend a better option than the custom ROM.
Do you have observations and comparison between the custom ROM and the stock in the above topics? Mainly battery life?
Thank you in advance.
P.S. I am very thankful to the developers working on the custom ROMs but I couldn't make it work for my device.

Run stock and theme it to taste.
Sounds like the only option for you.
In my experience all ROMs have their own quarks.
Good Luck
Screwed by Google. Canceled ICS upgrade on my Moto Photon 4G.

Yes the CM 10.2 gives you poor battery life. Compares to my HTC one, Photon Q's battery life is unbearable, even with Mobile data off.

I like ROMS
But you say that you have had all these problems have you checked out the CM roms or others types of roms... so far i think CM is the only one yet to make ROMS for this device you can check only nightly builds ... I just checked yes dev arrrghhh has made the PAC Man ROM for this device just google photon q pac man rom & it will come hope I was able to help.. I''m running Pac man rom on my Fascinate verzion so far I love have all 3 roms in 1 AOKP CM ParanoidAndroid it's best I feel build 8/21/13 Jellybean 4.3

I'm running the latest CM10.1 Skrilax build and it's so stable. I love the option to use sdcard as primary storage. It's been my daily driver since it was released on august 21st.

I'm running stock, but have removed a lot of bloat.
I'll have a look & see if I can find the thread where a member pulls out all the sprint stuff. That's what I followed.
Just need to figure out how to send MMS.

Maybe change the APN settings will solve the MMS problem.
I can't send & receive MMS on my sprint one even after I changed the APN settings.

Yeah, it doesn't work. The hidden DATA menu has extra settings for accts & MMS etc. I have changed these, but there is still something else stopping it. Typically need to have the acct number to edit these (although there are other ways).
Its due to the Sprint acct settings, I'm sure.
I CAN receive MMS though.

yeah, but the thing that stock is NOT perfect is the reason why we are using customs...
every roms have their own kink to iron out and we have to bear with them.
In my case, sound volumes of recorded videos are obviously not like them with stock, but I choose to go with CM10.2 just to be on par with other things.

Go SMS Pro allows me to send MMS on stock, so this solves the stock ROM in a round about way for me.
Now to find a custom ROM that will connect to my WiFi ap for my other Q.
Sent from my XT897 using xda app-developers app

To answer my question - definitely stock. The battery life is incomparable to the CM based ROMs. I can easily survive the day and may be have some juice for the morning. No restarts and force closes. I am not afraid any more that I will get a phone call while listening to music on bluetooth headset.
The main disadvantage of the stock for me is the lack of customizations. But with the expose framework and some other apps I am almost at same level as with the custom ROM.
As I am with modded GSM version I just have to find out how to remove the annoying Sprint activation message at each phone start.

Hey there - I have removed a lot of sprint bloat out of stock, and I no longer get the activation request on boot. Can't remember the thread where one of the guys (German I think) listed all the bits to pull out, but you'll find it if you look.

WIFI is now connecting with CM Rom if using WPA2-PSK
Just a quick note to say that I have now resolved the WIFI connectivity with my WiFi AP while running CM Rom (10.2-20131129 by Skrillax).
In a nutshell, after adjusting many settings on my AP (TX power %, Wireless Mode, etc, etc), it is the security mode.
CM don't want to connect when running WPA-PSK. Changing to WPA2-PSK has fixed it.
I get a 'connecting' notify, then 'saved' if I switch back to WPA-PSK. Just don't know if this is due to the recent build, as I was running CM from around June, previously.
Pretty certain I tried the different security modes before, even turning security off didn't help. Manually assigning IP's in the phone also didn't help.
I DID however have the TX power set at 25% when it first connected, but I have reset all settings back to normal/default, & it is still going strong.
You can decide for yourself whether it is better that CM won't connect when using WPA-PSK, for me it has been a pain in the A$$. Stock Rom connected fine on WPA-PSK.
Hope this sheds some light on poss wifi issues for the propeller heads, and other connectivity frustrated individuals. May even help others that suffer dropped connections??

I am using the stock ICS ROM and I am getting 169hrs of standby time.
I use a combination of Tasker and Smart Actions to automate my phone. Tasker controls plugins for Greenify, Secure Settings and Taskill (for some apps)
I am easily getting a full day out of my phone with 60% battery usage. I do use my phone quite often.
The screen brightness and keyboard backlight are the real killers of battery life. Set these to as low as you can handle.
Every time the screen is OFF, my (WiFi, Mobile Data, Bluetooth and GPS) is set OFF.
WiFi is my main data connection when I am near a WiFi spot.
Mobile Data only turns on when I need it.
Bluetooth on when I am charging to connect to my car. Everything gets Greenified on automatic exit of Car Mode
GPS is only set on when I am in the car.
Certain Apps only sync when I turn the screen on, others only when I open them. Even though I can set an interval for this.
When I jump in my car, Car Home V3 is launched with my custom widget setup and plays Spotify Automatically.
With root and xposed framework, Greenify will allow data sync at set intervals. The main thing is it Hibernates all chosen apps and their data usage. Set Tasker to Greenify (hibernate) apps for certain triggers, i.e. Leave home Wifi = Greenify (Hibernate) All Apps.
I also deleted a lot of the Sprint bloatware.
"Better Battery Stats" helped me get to the bottom of my battery draining apps.
I also have a "Battery Graph Widget" installed so I can keep an eye on my levels.

GS4G Problems Driving me nuts - can someone else confirm these?

I love this phone when it's working. That's WHEN.
Here is a short list of some of the various problems I'm having consistently with the phone. It would be great if anyone else can confirm if these are happening to them. Would be nice to see if this is a problem with the GS4G in general or just with my specific unit. TIA.
1. Wifi sometimes cannot be turned on. Clicking it on will just result in the word error apearing. Nothing more. A reboot will always fix this.
2. Bluetooth will regularly have to be manually connected to the Sync in my Ford and it will arbitrarily disconnect from Sync in the middle of calls. Never had any bluetooth issues with the Ford with my s740 for more than a year. It's not the car.
3. Ringtones and notification sounds magically stop working. They simply act as if they are playing, but don't. vibration does work. Rebooting will always fix this.
4. Google Navigator will only speak to me when it feels like it. It will stop speaking mid route or not speak at all when it doesn't feel like it. No idea how to fix this one. Reboots or restarting the app don't help. It's random.
The good news is GPS on this phone is GREAT. The screen is AMAZING. Most of the time it's pretty fast. It's a bit laggy sometimes thanks to the bloatware I think. I used link2sd and partitioned the memory card. Also the memory card in this phone is CLASS 2!!! I have a Class 6 on order so that should help.
ALL the problems existed prior to partitioning and installing link2sd and pror to rooting so that is not the cause of the trouble. I suspect the problems may be related to the limited rom and ram being overloaded and system processes crashing until reboot. I HOPE it's not defective hardware although I guess I'm still withint the 30 day return period so hope to sort it out and keep it rather than turn it in.
i would try and odin to stock using krylon's post in the dev section. if you do that and you still have these errors... most likely hardware related and you need a new phone. i have zero issues with mine.
I got the same issue when I had my regular Vibrant using Bionix V with the Wifi toggle. Same thing with my Galaxy S 4G. Most of the time I can go into settings and toggle it from there and it will work. Sometimes not. I also use SuperPower App and it turns off the Wifi when the screen is off I think.
only issue I too am having is that my wifi does error out at times as well. It is quite annoying but aside from the rest of the features of the phone it's not a huge deal; especially given that the internet speed top notch and most any connecting to my home system is ran via wan not lan just for comparability reasons when i leave the house.
I've had all those issues.
I hate the lag.
I replaced the 16gig 2 class with my 8gig class 6.
Still lag, and just not very snappy.
This thing is going back this week.
I have all these problems too - both before I rooted and installed link2sd and after.
I really like this phone but am probably going to have to take it back because of these issues.
the original Vibrant had lag, as well. but over a few months... custom roms saved the day. i would stick it out cuz the hardware is pretty awesome. just my two cents.
The only problem I've Had is the WiFi (AP) Froze ON once, and the screen did not want to respond well. Reboot fixed it. That problem happened after uninstalling some apps. I haven't had any problems since. Phone works Good.
I've figured out a couple things. Basically all the problems on the phome seem to be thanks to bad software and bloatware.
1 the wifi refusing to turn on issue. This seems to be caused by the "drive smart (small)" app. Using Android Assistant killing that app allows wifi to turn back on immediately. The app does not always block wifi from starting, but when wifi is not starting, killing this app lets it start. At least on my phome.
2 no sound from navigation apps and other notification sounds not playing. When connecting to my ford sync, there are two bluetooth profiles used. One is the phone profile and one is bt audio. This is normal. Every phone i've had connects both. The problem is that this phone tries to send all audio to the car when it should only be sending phone call audio and media playback to the car. This is not how my old winphone devices behaved. I don't know if this is an android thing or just bad bluetooth software on the gs4g. Sometimes once the car is turned off, the phone still sends all the notification sounds to bluetooth. I know this because when there are no sounds toggling off bt will fix it. The answer was to simply uncheck the bt audio option on the phone for the ford sync connection.
I still have not figured out how to get the phone to stop randomly disconnecting frpm ford sync in the middle of calls or even having to be manually connected to bt devices in the first place. I thonl maube the bt stack in this rom is just really poorly written.

I have issues too with BT auto connecting with a Sony Headset. I would agree that the BT stack is f'ked on this ROM. I have CY6 on my G1 & it never ever had issues with my headset. I'd just turn my headset on, turn BT, wait for magic & play pandora.
I feel you on that one. we all just need to wait for some good roms to come, which is really soon. i have the app2sd app which helps but i do have lag (at times) but for me tegrak overclock, galaxy tuner, and sgs tools. all help a lot.
App2sd didn't help me much. Instead I partitioned the card and used link2sd.
That worked for a while but then i started getting storage full notices again.
So today I also used the fota fix which clears up 250mb all by itself. And I also ised titanium to freeze some system bloatware apps so they won't run in the background.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
I have had NONE of the issues everyone is talking about.. additionally i've removed all of the bloatware, original ROM and SD card on phone, and it's snappy as heck.
I have not had any random bt disconnects since freezing some sytem apps and doing the fota fix. Only been a day but the phone is running like a dream w/those fixes so far.

you're using all those with your sgs 4g? I've heard of sgs tools creating issues (namely, camera) with the 4g.
Oh and +1 for the wifi issue, although it's only happened to me once I think. Then again, I don't use wifi very often.
I'm not sure if it was sgs tool's fault but ever since i used it my phone has been acting up so i might have to flash krylons stock rom. Now i have like no available ram memory, recording fails constantly, video that actually does record make the video player crash a lot, touch wiz no longer works, wifi always has an error, and i can't set ringtones anymore. Ill ive done on this phone is change the gallery, camera, and touch wiz through sgs tools and now its acting up a lot. I wish i can flash the rom now but my stupid computer says download error once i get to around 50%. I seriously learned my lesson, I'm not gonna mess with things that i don't really understand.

Can you please provide a list of what you actually removed? I'm familiar with what's bloat on the evo, but not on this device.
In a few days i'll be helping someone root their device along with installing a bunch of actually useful programs. This person is not interested in a custom rom/kernel, but getting rid of some of the stock bloat would be great.
Thanks!
Theres another weird thing I noticed about sgs4g, when you turned data off signal doesnt come on or takes a long time... Anybody else getting that and mine is stock no root nothing

Since we're talking signal in here...sitting at work, my G1 got great signal, now with my SG4G I bounce between 1 and two bars...
Do the SG4Gs only use 4G or Edge?

Safe Mode

Whenever i say that new smart phones aren't really phones, but actually entertainment devices that make calls, everyone nods and agrees. But what if there was a way to reverse that so they only made calls and pretty much nothing else? I'm looking to find a "safe mode", in which lots of services and drivers aren't even loaded.. ever. A good example of its use would be when i needed to drive 4 hours away for a funeral. I had no need for twitter and angry birds, I just needed to freely communicate with relatives. Another example is being stranded on the highway cause of dead car battery. Most Evo users would be clinging to dear battery life. Sometimes we want to be saturated with features, and other times we would be just fine with a classic green screen phone that only needs a weekly charge.
Would it be possible to dual boot into a very minimalist rom? If i knew my phone had a mode for emergencies, i wouldn't be searching every inch of the web for juice saving tips. Is this possible? If so, which rom would accomplish this? Thanks.

I have an option on my DroidX and it might work for you. I think it is generic for Android phones.
From the dialer do *#*#4636#*#* and go into the phone menu and you can change the network or disable the data connection altogether. On my phone it makes and receives phone calls and text messages but nothing else.
There is sometimes a delay when I make a change, a few seconds, so be patient.
I have a feeling you could do some damage in this menu so make a note of anything you change.
Since you are rooted, you could also install Droidwall or something similar and be very selective about what applications you allow to have a data connection.
You can theoretically create a custom CM7 or AOSP ROM with only the essentials- the phone.apk, contacts.apk, mms.apk, settings, and their corresponding supporting files/ framework.
Mind you, the screen would still be the biggest battery drain. And there comes a question of dual booting (which should be possible in my phone at least, with Magldr...).

No sync after radio update

My adventures with the HTC One S just dont seem to end. Here is a short history:
First thing I did when I got the phone was flash over CM9 as I dont like Sense
All was good until the home button issue popped up, this was at that time my only issue and sync worked just fine
I flashed over CM10 when it was stable enough, this didnt fix the home button issue though
I then flashed over the new RUU with radio 2.21 and directly after that CM10 again (I still dont like Sense)
After the first flash I had a lot of grey signal bars (either bad signal or no connection with Google servers) so I flashed CM10 again.
The signal bars where blue after that and the new radio (2.21) has improved the signal a lot and therefor minimizing the home button issue
But since the new radio I'm experiencing a new problem, just as much annoying. My phone wont sync when the screen is off or wont sync at all unless I do it manually.
This is what I have tried so far:
First cleaned cache from Gmail, Google Services Framework and Market -> no fix
Rebooted the phone with airplane mode on and enabling data connection afterwards -> no fix
Factory reset from recovery, flash CM10 again and restore apps with TB -> no fix
Factory reset from recovery, flash CM10 again and no restore of apps but just vanilla CM10 -> no fix
I have ran out of options so I could use some help here. Why are emails not pushed to my phone when the screen is off?
I had all kinds of sync issues with that radio until I flashed Trickdroid 7.1 which is built off the base which included that radio. Can't figure out how, but it's like they work best together though my best guess is that TD just maintains more free memory, so whatever process syncs the phone doesn't get killed. You can even desense TD as part of the tweak pack if you want to try it

Hmmm ... thanx for this info. I hoped the problem was not related to the radio and I missed something stupid. When I have some time I'll make a nandroid backup of CM10 and will give Trickdroid 7.1 a go, see if it fixes things.
Another solution I was thinking of was buying Tasker and schedule a sync job. When set up right it might even save me some battery juice.

I tried Trickdroid 7.1 today but spent no longer then 5 minutes on this ROM. Although I selected all options of going back to stock and removing anything related to Sense in the Trickdroid Tweaks it was no where near the AOSP feeling I like best. So I didnt like Trickdroid at all.
Didnt properly test the syncing but in the one test I did I received my email instantly. So I guess there is indeed a problem with the new radio and CM10. I'll report this in the CM10 support thread.

Mic is going quiet during calls - receiver notices volume drop.

I've regularly been getting reports that during a call, the other party notices the mic volume on my PQ drops - sounds like I'm far away from the phone.

Might want to mention what you're running. I have the same problem in CM11, and it's always been like that. Wonder if it's CM specific. I don't have problems if I hold the phone flat to my face, but I don't like putting something that's had hands all over onto my face.

Please edit /system/build.prop to change 'ro.qc.sdk.audio.fluencetype' from 'fluence' to 'none' and then reboot.
Let me know if it helped.
This change will disable the qcom fluence noise cancellation algorithm (unless 'persist.audio.fluence.voicecall' is set to true as well, but it shouldn't be - you can check the audio properties by 'su', then 'getprop | grep audio' command run from adb shell or terminal emulator on phone).

I'd welcome feedback on this property change (ro.qc.sdk.audio.fluencetype=none) as I'm considering to make it default in CM (if there will be agreement on it between the few moto_msm8960 maintainers).
It really seems to help the voice clarity heard by the remote party on the other end of the phone call in my case, both using my Photon Q and also Razr HD.
Motorola stock sets it to 'none' as well, and I seem to see (hear) the reason for it now...
I've been using it for a little bit - can't confirm precisely yet, I'll have to test a bit longer. Some calls are still having issues I think.
I'm also thinking about going down a few notches with ROM's - just getting a lot of lagging & stoppages with PAC rom KK RC3

This has reached the point where I can call one person (or they call me) 5-6 times, and they can't hear me - using BT or handset mic, but I can call someone else in between & they hear me fine.
Almost like it is a network/service provider compatibility issue - used to be that iPhone's had trouble hearing me, but my wife's iPhone doesn't so that idea was scrapped (yes she has one, but she also has a great ass).
Now running ICS on second handset, and no problems yet. I'll try ICS on first handset in a couple of weeks & see if that fixes the issue.
Its either going to be hardware or software/rom- possibly something to do with managing the call to BT.
The fact that it happens intermittantly on BT or handset mic, even after reboot makes me think software.

I wonder if you are encountering the same 'bug', in which case flashing stock would resolve your problem. Obviously his issue is with notifications, but I wonder if his workaround resolves it for you.

It sounds kinda like what I had going on- rocking the volume did seem to help the BT volume/calls sometimes for me also.
Its like the phone doesn't know how to manage the audio/mic.

My other handset running ICS works fine - however there are some annoyances with ICS - stops charging while in car dock etc.
So I've just loaded Carbon onto the original handset (both actually) that was having volume issues, and I will test & report I the volume/mic/BT issues have gone.
Sent from my PHOTON Q using XDA Free mobile app
Carbon is working well, I did have a complaint that the mic was muting again during a call just once - seemed to happen when I changed my grip in the phone - this may have shifted the slider very slightly, so I've swapped out the whole screen/ribbon assy to see if it makes any kind of difference - don't know why it would, possibly a faulty track causing a disturbance.
Have yet to test BT.
Sent from my PHOTON Q using XDA Free mobile app
BT & mic are failing in the same way with Carbon. I've tested long enough & tried a number of variables (headsets etc).
I have tried it on 2 handsets, with full wipe/clean installs.
I'm convinced it is a software issue and is affecting different roms, so at some stage this bug has slipped into the builds unnoticed.

Carbon / PAC / lots of ROM's are heavily based on CM, so if it's affecting CM it usually affects a lot of other ROM's as well.
FIXED!
By going back to JB stock, stripping out unwanted apk's & bloat (sprint etc), and adding some features with xposed framework.

Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
I noticed one small problem, I was unable to send a text message. I could read them but.unable to send with the built messaging app. I did not have a lot of time to spend on this rom yet. Look forward to it though. Thanks

Hrm, were you using hangouts? I use hangouts for SMS and have had no probs yet, haven't really tested MMS yet though.

I really want to try this ROM on my phone but I only have one device and its my daily device. I read in the other thread that there was an issue with answering incoming calls. Is there a fix for that?

Has anyone tested the IR Blaster on this build yet? I'm interested in trying this ROM but from what I understand and from my previous CM12 experience, I haven't seen the IR Blaster working on any AOSP ROM.
Anyone have advice on getting the messaging app to work? I'm using a third party app but the regular messaging app is constantly force closing. Would it be safe to just disable it or would that stop texts all together?

Thanks, I'll try that App out. I've been using Smart Remote with TW based ROM's w/great success, thought I'd give IR a try again on AOSP ROM's since it appeared to be working per list of working items. Thanks again for the reply.
call bug in CM12
Whenever my phone received a call it would forward them straight to voicemail and would have this ringing sound that would come from the handset earpiece of the phone and it would only stop after I restart the phone. What should I do?
P.s. I have the SM-G900p (sprint variant) of the Samsung galaxy
Thanks for the awesome ROM!
I did also notice some bugginess with BT, Pandora when connected to my Mazda 3.
Funny behavior is that it works fine when disconnected but soon as I connect to the car Pandora does not play...so I'm not sure If its an issue with Pandora itself or something else..
Thanks! Great work!

I experienced this as well when using the CM from the official site. Mike's ROM Fixed this..
Another Issue I've found, not sure if its just google or CM12 base, but if you open up the dial pad while in the call i.e to push keys for menus or something, the ear piece stops outputing sound, have to enable speaker phone in order to hear when key pad is open.
Bluetooth issue, bluetooth share crashes after a few songs played back on Pandora..
Anyone else experiencing MISC battery drain? 40% of my battery drain is related to that. I've read its caused by WIFI being on (makes sense as I"m almost always connected to WiFi (home or work) ... going to test to see if keeping wifi off at work tomrrow helps out more.
I'm using the 1/13 nightly build (flashed 1/11 beforehand) - this looks and works great. Two bugs in facing: I cannot receive phone calls (just a weird ring that only goes away with a reboot) and MMS won't work. Planning on doing tonight's build.
@ Izzy.. ineteresting, I was seeing that with Official Nightly's, but not Miked's compile.. wonder what he's doing differently
Also, with the latest nightly for 1/12 that Mike put out looks like bluetooth is stable.... atleast made it through my entire morning commute to work (about 30 mins) without any issues. Lets see what happens on the way home.
Regarding calls
In regards to calls in the most recent posts on page 9, I am also having issues. I have tried calling to and from my office so I can control both ends and I'm unable to hear either end. The calls connect but there is no noise from either speaker. Just chiming in on the issue. Thanks for an otherwise solid build!

I think I may have found a fix for the battery drain, try out my latest build and let me know.
As for the call problems people are having, I really don't know I have not had any issues since the first build I did. After the first one I used a different device tree and haven't had any problems. Just to try to correlate the issue, could anybody having calling problems please report what baseband they are using? I am on NKD, and like I said no probs. The first build I made had the same problem as the official nightlies where it had a weird ring but couldn't pick up. In fact the only build I had the problem on was actually removed from the links so anybody experiencing it is likely running into something new.

I've installed your latest build, testing it now, well will charge fully to 100% and then see if misc battery drain appears.
I'm on NK4 baseband. Experiencing a few issues...
- Laggy dialer
- When using keypad in the dialer sometimes earpiece cuts out and have to put into speaker phone and then back (i.e when using automated menus during calls)
I am able to make and receive calls as far as I can tell... Should I have flashed the stock lolipop rom first I wonder...

That's the same thing I am wondering, not sure if the people who are experiencing call issues are related to their baseband. I did briefly test on some earlier basebands and didn't notice any probs, but the testing was far from extensive. Its just a thought but could be related.
I haven't noticed the earpiece problem, but I always use speakerphone for menus and such. The dialer lag I have noticed, it just hasn't seemed worse to me than on any other ROM including stock ones. Hopefully these are things that will be washed out with future updates. I plan to continue builds indefinitely, and fix what I can, but these seem like they would be hard to track down at this point.
