Returned Surface RT to Microsoft - Microsoft Surface

Hi, i want to tell my experience about why i'm returning back to Microsoft my Surface RT.
Some days ago, my Surface started to show BSOD's while i was using it. It just frozen and i had to wait like 5 minutes to boot again. That was really annoying. Also, i bought 'Halo: Spartan Assault' (that was running at sooo low FPS on my Surface, 15 aprox, while in my PC is running perfectly), and while i was playing it showed a 'Drivers problem' about the Nvidia with a message on the desktop and the game crashed.
Also i want to say that apps like Twitter opened really slow (For example, Twitter took like one minute to open!), and Internet Explorer doesn't run smooth, it has a really sluggy scroll on complex webpages. This problems, and a blacklight bleeding problems with the screen took me to return the Surface RT to the technical service.
There is a photo of the backlight bleeding problem.

I have a small amount of light bleed in one corner. The same corner I dropped it on, so I just assumed it was due to that.

That backlight bleeding was really annoying, i wish that Microsoft repair the LCD, and fix these weird problems. or at least give me a new Surface. I never dropped the Surface, and these light bleeds are in the screen from the first day

By the way, you can vastly increase the browser performance by using the desktop-mode browser and using the Tracking Protection feature as an ad-blocker. The problem for RT's browsing is that the browser is fully capable like a desktop browser, meaning that it will show all the Flash ads and mouse-hover-pop-over ads and all that bullcrap, but the CPU powering it is way less powerful than any desktop CPU from the last five years or so. So yeah, really complex pages aimed at desktop browsers (and/or written brainless "developers" who don't give a damn about performance or test on anything except high-end hardware) will be slow.
Tracking Protection can massively improve this. To use it, go to desktop IE, click the Gear icon in the upper right, and then select Manage Add-ons. Go to Tracking Protection (on the left) and select "Get a tracking protection list online" (left side, low). Add whatever lists you like - try to keep the number reasonably low, I only have two and find that EasyList does a pretty good job - to the browser and subscribe to updates (should happen by default). Then, make sure Tracking Protection is enabled (it should be listed under gear -> safety -> tracking protection) and you should see ads go away and performance get much better. You can selectively disable blocking on specific pages by clicking the blue crossed-out-circle that appears in the address bar and turning off tracking protection for that page.
Note that this works on all recent versions of IE; it's nice to browse without ads on your laptop/desktop too.

Gonna say, x86_64 laptop here, useful hint thanks. I prefer chrome but do the odd bit of browsing in IE (got 1 site I visit which wont play nicely with chrome or safari and if there is a link posted on that site then I tend to remain in IE to watch it rather than firing up chrome seperately).

Backlightbleed is common for an LCD. There won't be any unit without it.

Light bleed is only a problem if you sit there looking at a black screen

This looks pretty cool. I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes. Thanks!
Man this is really great work. I don't see why that app hasn't got any resonance yet if you think about all the tcmpc streaming approaches...
The only cons i find is that you can't chose the site you want to search (e.g. only veoh.com, or only youtube.com). A menu in which you can demand a specific site as source would be wonderful.
and then, the screen format is odd. if it ran fullscreen, most videos would fit, but this way they are either cropped or shown in the wrong size. specially in non-landscape mode.
but other than that, it works perfectly. video and audio stream very stable over wifi with my prophet annd without overclocking, which isn't the case with tcmpc and flashvideobundle.
keep up the good work, this is what people wanted for a long time, obviously
does this work over EDGE?
This is a pretty cool program. Please continue to develop it.
I have to agree with E_Shinobi though, it would be nice to have an option to only surf one type of site. Maybe add a menu for users to pick if they want to view Youtube videos or Google videos.
Is there a list of all supported sites? What other sites will we be able to view in the future? I know there are a lot of them these days.
Very nice program, but not all results show at this time. But I assume this is something you are working on. Also, if I accidently hit a key, like the start menu key, the program gets glitchy.

Theoretically, yes. However, depending on where you are, your EDGE signal might not be able to provide enough throughput to stream the video at full speed. In fact, I'm going to hazard a guess at "yes, but..." if you let the video buffer, you should be OK. I just tested the service on AT&T's EDGE in South Jersey (four bar signal), with a 15 second clip from Google Video, and it was OK, a long buffering time, a little stuttering towards the middle, but otherwise OK. I also tested it with a six minute clip from YouTube called the "Hubblecast" (Hubblecast 07, to be precise) and it stuttered a little, but that might have been the CPU being a little overloaded. After about 30 seconds, it seemed to hang. It might be just too much visual complexity, but it's also possible that EDGE just isn't fast enough to keep up. After a pause for 20 seconds or so, the video played OK, until it hung again. When I switched over to WiFi, I experienced similar results. So the problem might be the Dash just isn't fast enough to handle Atov at this early stage, or the servers are being slammed and destroying quality of service.
My biggest disappointment is the lack of a full screen option, or an option where the video is properly scaled, and not just smashed into the available space. Also, I'm using this on my Dash, and the thing seemed picky about how much RAM was available. I'm using the stock T-Mo firmware, and after running a few apps, it's hard to free up more than 5 MB or so, but that seems to be just enough.
This thread needs to be bumped.
Runs choppy on my Mogul, I think it's because of a directdraw issue with the mogul. Is there any way to change the output driver to GDI? How does it handle compression, I don't have flash installed, and it still streams. I would love to hear some more details on how the program actually works.
Dustin
running quite well on my wizard sometimes a little choppy, also couldnt work out how to get full screen but that was probably just me.
On my tornado, when the video is playing, I can't stop it, it just hanged while the video is playing.
Pressing home button, I can see the home screen blinking behind the video, but then late the video overlap it back
have been looking for somthing like this for some time so will defiantly be giving it a go thanks

Google Maps Text Size

Is there anyway to make the text in Google Maps visible without using a microscope?
Subscribing. I want to know too.
also would like to know
i would like to know the same here
Me Too. I'm very interested.
it is quite tiny!
Miniscule.
I found that turning satellite view off made the letters appears big enough to read. Hope this helps someone.
What I don't understand is why, when selected, a scale one step larger than the maximum will start to load (with larger font and graphics) but then stops and defaults back to the maximum allowed.
Using a magnifying glass is very inconvenient
I just carry one of these with me everywhere I go, just in case I need to use google maps.

I guess I'm the only one here that thinks it's an improvement. Admittedly I just had my eyes checked and I'm better than 20/20 with glasses so maybe that is the difference, but I can still read the streets on the map when holding the phone at arm length.
It is harder in satelite view but the text is the same size, it's just all the mess around the names that makes it hard to read.
I hope they keep it as it is, I want to see the streets without giant text covering the maps.
Edit: I attached a screenshot just so people can compare to see if it's the same they're getting.
What version of Google Maps do you have? my map resolution / street name size is no where near that large / legible.
Michael
Lol, now I feel like a jackass for complaining. I looked at your pic, and think it looks fine, so I looked back at my Google Maps, and I guess it is fine.
I think some of us are coming from the HTC 6800 with 320x240 screen resolution, so we're used to that.
But the program is GREAT!!! Love the street view addition (although I personally don't use it much other than to show off to my iPhone friends - but they have it too).
I have is version 2.1.0.10 of Google Maps.
When I zoom out, for a split second all the street names are shrunk and barely legible but then the screen redraws and the names go back to normal. I wonder if some people are stuck with that resolution that is one step smaller than the zoom level they should be at.
And I was wrong above, satellite view is definitely smaller text. It's still readable but not as easy as map view.
I believe the latest version is 2.3.0.9. That's what I have.
im getting my fuze on monday and i plan to use google maps alot, what i want to know if you set a route while in gps mode will it count down the miles till the next turn/checkpoint? and update to the next one? i know it doesnt have voice or turn by turn but i was just curious how it works with driving directions in gps mode. there are really no vids on youtube or anything showing how it works while moving

No, it doesn't do this. It pretty much calculates the route from where you were at the time of starting the route. You can use My Location to show where you are relative to the upcoming turn, but it doesn't function as a true navigation yet.
But don't be mistaken, this program is still amazing!

Dang you're right. I forgot that I just put on a new ROM, I guess the cab I had saved was the old one.
But even after the upgrade the text size stayed the same. Here's another screenshot if anybody wants to see the side by side of the old and the new.
I think the real issue here is that the text is actually embedded in images sent to your device from Google's map servers. That would mean that any fix for this would have to include a server-side component.
In addition, I'm pretty sure they'll have an aggressive server-side caching algorithm in order to increase performance for clients, which would probably use lots of storage space in their data-centers. For each new resolution they want to support server-side, they'll have to have a completely new image cache. I have no idea how expensive this might be, but it's possible that someone did a cost/benefit calculation, and given that VGA mobile devices aren't particularly common at this point, they may have decided it's not worth fixing ... yet.
I suggest you go to Google's mobile help forum and ask there, if you haven't already:

Dorothy: an Internet browser for Windows Mobile 6/6.1

Hi, all.
I'd like to introduce Dorothy, an Internet Browser for Windows Mobile 6/6.1.
In fact, I'm one of the developers of this browser.
It's a stand-alone, webkit-based browser.
We tested it on HTC HD/Diamond, Sony Ericsson X1i, and Samsung Omnia.
We started the closed beta program a few weeks ago.
You can join at http://www.dorothybrowser.com .
I hope you enjoy the Internet browsing with Dorothy.
We welcome any feedback or suggestion.

All the bests,
Daniel W. Kim.
i am only downloading because i really like the name.
They call it a 'service,' so perhaps they use their servers to transcode websites before sending them to the phone? If so, it's in the same vein as Opera Mini, Opera Turbo and Bolt Browser.
I hope it's not the case.
i too love the name

It does not use any proxy server. It's stand alone.
Oh sweet! I can't wait to test it then. If it really is three times faster than Opera, this could be one killer browser.
I already registered, har har. :3
Update: got the download link! I'm excited.
Interesting. Only basics, but fast. I miss only text wrapping (now it's hard to read anything) and tabbed brwosing. I like rendering - it's fast on start, it's fast when scolling, it's fast when exitting. I can't save my homepage in settings.
Interesting yeah. Not quite the three times faster than Opera Mobile as advertised, but further developments would be fun to watch.
Will we get updates by email?

Dorothy already has automatic update feature in it. You can see the update dialogue if there is any update. (The dialogue appears once a day if the update is available.) And we are planning to send e-mail notifications for updates.
We are now in the closed beta phase, that is, we are adding new features, fixing bugs, and changing things. Your suggestion or feedback will be very helpful. Please feel free to suggest.
I'm still waiting for their email with the download...
Really looking forward to trying it!
My email went in the spam box-check there.
Nice browser. I like the blue skin. It's not as fast as mini 4.2, but is on par with ucweb6 and opera 9.7. It needs settings and a full screen mode. Definitely a keeper.
Pages seem to render faster than Opera Mobile 9.5, actually. The issue is that they aren't updated to the screen properly. For example, when I navigate from one page to another, while the new page is loading, I still see the previous page, but if I scroll while it's loading, it renders the new parts without updating the section that's still painted with the old page.
Definitely a keeper. Needs more work on usability features, such as kinetic scrolling, better zooming and text reflow. Good job guys!
Oh, by the way, I use an HTC Touch Diamond. VGA screen.
Somebody registered but didn't get an e-mail?
Please let me know if you can't find any e-mail from "Dorothy" even in the spam box.
Maybe we should modify the e-mail sender module
contact e-mail: [email protected]
And, on the other hand, yes,
we are working on that page update bug.
Hey! Thanks for the update. I just sent an email to the feedback address so all of your team can see it. I also included a couple more concerns, I think.
In any case, it's pretty awesome to have yet another quality browser enter the WinMo market. We'll see how the competition plays out. Best of luck to everyone? Haha~
wow this is really a keeper! it really loads pages fast, even got more speed than opera mini on my device (touch pro 2)! needs a full screen mode though... and sometimes i get minor rendering issues( grey boxes here and there)
will keep an eye out for updates!
same here with the email - not spam folder no email, unfortunately.

Not yet
We are preparing resolution independent version.
When can I expect to get my email?
I really like it!
On touch HD the rendering is fast and accurate, also compared to Iris it seems that the page better follows the finger gesture (more fluid movement).
Compared to opera, It better supports Iphone websites thanks to webkit.
Impressive first attempt.
Like everybody else I'd like to see features like:
- Fullscreen (I really don't need to see windows top bar when surfing, and the address bar could be hidden the same way the bottom bar is hidden: just leaving a back button and an extend bar button maybe?)
- Zoom (I'd like not to have to scroll left and right when I zoom on iphone websites, could we chose the canvas size like in Opera? or have options like in Iris Mobile, Desktop, Column...)
- Kinetic scrolling (Everybody is really used to it, even if I also like the opera mini way were scrolling on the page is twice as fast as scrolling the finger - this one can be implemented easily I guess if kinetic takes too much time for now allowing for faster scrolling)
- Remember passwords (in safe and secure way of course)
Also question: What is the option at the right in the bottom bar with a + and a t?
Anyway thanks, really happy to see things moving on WM side of browsing, funny to see the new IE struggling compared to the competition...

My Captivate Review

Alright folks, here's my impressions/review of the Captivate after 3 days of use.
I won't go into technical details here, you can look those up elsewhere.
This is just some "real-world" usage info for anyone on the fence or whatnot. Obviously, no iTunes bloatware or anything to screw with. Rooting this took about two minutes once I had all the software I needed installed (which is simply extracting a zip file, so it's not that big of deal, in itself)
The unlock screen is a 3x3 screen that you can set into any pattern you'd like to set. Simply connecting straight lines of dots or doing a big S or something, you can set this pattern however you'd like. Unlike the iPhone, which you have to unlock THEN enter the pass code, you just have to know the unlock pattern to get into this phone, saving a step. Huge advantage just for casual folks.
Granted, the 9 dot (3x3) unlock isn't as numerous in possible combinations as is a custom code, but as I said: "casual" folks, and you can set an additional code there if you'd like.
Second, the Facebook integration (I'd imagine the Twitter/MySpace is the same, I don't use those) is great. Whereas the iPhone really won't integrate much other than photos, you can integrate calendar events, status updates, and everything without ever having to pull up the Facebook app itself. From one calendar I can see both Facebook events and my Google Calendar events... Just little stuff makes you happy. Of course stuff like this is to be expected on Android. I could go on and on of all these awesome little differences, but I'm just picking a few of what I think are popular examples.
Third, the size is just slightly bigger than the iPhone, of course. Thickness is about the same, but the bigger screen means it's SLIGHTLY bigger. IMO this is the PERFECT size of screen for something in your pocket. Looking at the iPhone's is like torture now. Whereas it's still a good size to fit in your pocket.
One note about this phone is that it's LIGHT. Very light, yet at least this ATT version feels solidly sturdy. It's also got the easiest to access battery cover I've ever used.
Tons of customizations. TouchWiz isn't bad, and I like Samsung's Facebook widget better than the actual Facebook widget... But I switched to Launcher Pro simply because it has a ton of options. Displaying your App Drawer in 3D is awesome, for example. You can set number of desktops, etc... Tons of options with Launcher Pro.
Battery life seems to be acceptable. As with many batteries it won't reach it's "maturity" until I've gone through 5 or so charges... Day 1 and 2 I had it plugged in quite often, so this will be my first day going straight through. I can say that I unplugged it 5 hours ago and it's dropped 25%, with moderate (IMO) usage. Again, that can only get better over time. I think it'd be safe to say I can get a whole day out of this phone.
Now the primary reason for this was the Super AMOLED display.
First, sunlight viewing. Here are some pics comparing it to my 3GS. This slightly wins in the sunlight test.

}
You can also notice... Images (and everything) looks better on the Super AMOLED. There's debate about text, and I will admit the iPhone 4 is capable of better text display, but when held at arm's (normal) length, I can't tell any quality difference between my laptop and the text quality of the Super AMOLED. IMO if you have to study the display with a microscope to tell the difference, than well... I'll just say it: iPhone users paid a premium for a feature that lacks real-world relevance.
Onto viewing angles. Hands down, the Super AMOLED wins.
Obviously, color reproduction is better. Here's the same pic on both that displays the black levels, however... Super AMOLED again wins hands down:
Tons of advantages here. Android accounts for many of them. This is hands-down the best phone I've used (and yes, the iPhone 4 is included in that).
My only minor gripe is the home screen buttons don't stay lit up for the duration of the display, they time out after several seconds (versus the 30 seconds or so I have the screen set to). Just an annoyance which I'm sure will be fixed at some point, again: this device isn't even released yet and it has some great community fixes going for it already.
For those of you that want an awesome phone that doesn't drop the signal with a fingertip, this is it
Thanks man! Good review, and it is quick and straight to the point!
Great review, thanks for the info . When did you get yours and for how much? (on or off contract?)
p.s. I'd take those pics again for image comparison after you wipe both of those screens off . I think i can see a booger on the first iphone pic. lol jk, but it would really help us see the difference better if both screens were clean
*edit: that is if you care or have the time. Thanks again.
Great work! Quick question if you don't mind. I've heard rumors of not being able to download 3rd party apps from the Android Market thanks to AT&T... tell me this isn't true

Yeah its true but you can still use adb and the phone has already been rooted. Check the Captivate Software Development thread to learn how to do it.
That sucks that its true and great that we can go around it. Thanks for the info
@jjimenezjj 3rd party apps are those not in the Android Market, like betas or test run apps, so anything in the market should be fine. But with the free ADB tool in the Android SDK any app can be pushed to the phone and so "side-loaded. "
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Hmmm. I have all sorts of apps from the Android store on my Captivate. E-Wallet Viewer, Yelp, Documents-to-go, YPmobile. . . .
What I don't like is that AT&T doesn't package any useful business friendly apps on it, like Doc's2Go, so you have to buy those. They need to get rid of the bloatware and add some business friendly apps. Losing a couple of the map apps would be good.
If you use exchange for mail - there are some issues with that also. The mail client isn't a true exchange client. If you have a link in an appointment, such as checking in for an airline reservation like Southwest or American, you cannot click on the link and go to the website from the appointment pop-up. Bad form. Hopefully fixed in A2.2. Also, unlike the BlackBerry, you can't sync personal folders from outlook. Another feature that'd be nice. Customization is amazingly easy. And rooting is really simple.
Otherwise a great phone. Decent battery life, expecially if you don't use an Active Wallpaper. I'm not going back to my Blackberry Bold II. . . . .

Thanks. Anil
PS. I'm running CM7 on a O2X with an ICS theme.
They're roughly ordered into categories, although the more used options tend to be closer to the top (WIFI settings have the possibility to be accessed as part of regular usage, other menus are accessed less frequently)

Hi Kagadar, categories? Most frequently used?
I for one have a Wi-Fi widget, which means that option can be accessed from one of my home screens. When I do pay a visit to the system menu's, it seems a bit chaotic, especially for new users. And don't user patterns differ greatly?
Most OS' use an alphabetical listing, which is logical. Thanks for your reply. I wish there was an option to list alphabetically.
Anil
Yeah, I would have to goto usability/ease of use. Top 4 options in ics i use many more times than other options
While I agree that it is chaotic at first, not everyone uses a wifi widget (I simply don't have the screen real estate for something as infrequently used as that). If I need to enter settings, 9/10 times it is to access bluetooth or wifi settings. Those are right on the top simply because they're the most common reason to be in the settings menu.
A lot of the other settings are things that only need a one time configuration based on the users preferences. Applications is another commonly used one, but its redundant since there is a link from the launcher context menu directly to the applications page.

Hi Kagadar, interesting points. I have never used Bluetooth, LOL. And your right once most settings are normally visited once and then set, there isn't much need to go back. I have a Wi-Fi widget simply to turn Wi-Fi off so I can switch to 3G when my home internet connection has a lot of traffic.
I think the most 'logical' order would alphabetical. But the coolest order would be sorted in order of times used. The options you rarely use move down, and the ones you use often move to the top. That is how technology should work, for us, not the other way around.
Thanks for your sharing your opinion, very enlightening. Anil

Hi toast333, ease of use is always the best option. But ALL users have different usage patterns. So you may please a lot of users, some users will be s**t out of luck.
But my question is from a UI designers point of view. I know new users know their alphabet, a, b, c, d... So having to learn where settings are, can be less frustrating if they follow an order they already understand.
I do see your point, you are by your comment, an experienced user? I wonder how new users would find this layout? I cut my UI teeth on a Mac, a platform which has a lot of consistency and predictable logic. Simply because a user shouldn't have to re-learn certain fundamentals. Key commands are the same throughout and rarely/never change from app to app.
It makes the user experience less frustrating.
Thanks for your opinion. Anil
Apple probably have a Patent on listing Menus alphabetically!

Actually Apple, don't list menu items alphabetically.
Thanks for your informed comment. Anil
Not only did you miss the point but you failed to realise that it even existed!
Do you think that every patent Apple owns is IP that is included in it's own software? That's not how it works!

OK, if it makes you feel better, feel smug.
Nothing like ignorance without the bliss.
Greetings from sunny Italy. Anil
And one more because it's a Friday
