So I figured a wireless charger will prevent my otterbox from stretching out and all. What ive found to be a pain in the ass compared to all videos ive seen. Every one people just throw the phone on top. Comes on charging. My phone complains for me to center the circle on the screen with the dot in the center of my QI charger.
Anybody else notice this? Or is the droid maxx just a pain in the ass to wireless charge?

Its nice but I prefer to charge via wire my s4 stock charger charges at 2 amps a second where as the wireless charger only charges at around .5 amps so instead of taking around 2 hours to charge it would take around 5 hours .

I think you meant the charger rating is 2 amps. Battery has a rating of amp/hr, but not chargers. They are only rated at amps. E.g., if a battery is rated at 60 amp/hr, and it is flat, to fully-charge using a 2 amp charger it will take about 30 hrs (30 * 2 = 60). That's only theoretical because other factors take into play: the condition of the electrolyte, the physical condition of the battery, the performance of the charger, ambient temperature and humidity, etc.

If charging at 2 amps take 2 hours, then charging at 0.5 amps will take 8 hrs (2.0 / 0.5 * 2 = 8)
In the above examples, I am assuming that the battery and charger Voltage rating is the same.
Just clarifying.
I want a spot in my car where you set your phone and it wirelessly charges while playing your music via bluetooth and doing calls/texts via bluetooth and voice. Set your phone there when you get in the car and it is fully powered, charging, and ties into everything. It needs some mechanism to keep the phone there (some sort of clamp?) and be positioned well for GPS usage.
Wireless charging will be awesome once there is a standard and it starts getting built into things like that.

Think of it as a transformer with the primary and secondary coils not firmly attached to each other. It's no more dangerous than any AC adapter. Of course, if they decided to make these chargers to work at a distance, there might be some risk. (shades of Tesla!)

I totally agree, there should be thorough study on the electromagnetic waves not affecting the memory cards and the volatile storage inside the phone... might result in data loss?

It seems to charge pretty fast from the A/C charger but plugging it in to your Pc seems to take FOREVER.
Mine takes forever charging no matter what. Ive put it on the charger at 50% and it took 3hours ish to get back to 100%. Granted my phone could probably go two days with four hours of on screen time too.
Granted I can't speak for stock because I rooted asap. I mainly use AC 95% too. Not sure if how much root affects it, I'm on synergy (awesome btw).

Charging on AC is really fast for me too. Car charging and PC charging not so much.
GNEX was my fastest charging smartphone...but also had the worst battery life.

I am betting it's because most of us have 1amp or 2.1 amp chargers available in the car. I, personally, still use the motorola 950mAh car charger, which speeds thru the charging process too.
USB still pumps out 500 mAh at best, always gonna be slow.
None of this has to do with the phone, btw.
Slow charging for me. But its random. Sometimes its decently quick but other times it takes forever to charge. Fastest phone to charge for me was the OG droid.

I've noticed that when its plugged into the wall charger, its super fast, computer though is utterly slow.
Its really fast, about an hour and I'm at 100% from 0%.

There is a thing in the charging port that only the samsung charger activated that allows charing upwards of 1000 when using normal micro usb only does 300.
If you download imosyens leankernal he developed it into the kernal that you go to terminal editor and put "ffc"and charger will go as fast as thr samsung one.

Lol I'm the opposite. Coming from a Galaxy Nexus this phone charges much slower. Galaxy Nexus would be fully charged in maybe an hour and a half. With the GS3 it's closer to 3 hours for a full charge. Hear it's the low-power brick that comes with it though.

Yep. For example, the Motorola SPN5400A will charge the S3 in about 1\2 to 1\3 the time it would take if plugged into a USB port. I honestly believe it's because it has quality internal circuitry. Hell, at .95 mAh it charges quicker than most 2.1mAh chargers. Again, has nothing to do with the phones, it's the chargers that come with.

3 hrs seems off. I think I could wire mine to my electric razor and charge it faster

Just for info, my wireless energizer pad and Verizon wireless door charge faster than the factory charger. And my factory charger will charge between 1.5 and 2 hours from 3% or 4%.
If you are taking over 2 hours I would check the battery and make sure it isn't swollen or something wrong with it. As far as usb most ports are "as stated above" not going to supply juice fast enough to charge quickly.
And it's probably worth seeing if something is on thats sucking power, Bluetooth, gps, facebook, anything that sync's alot. And using almost as much power as the usb is putting out.

I have one here and it works fine, charges my phone with no problem and temperatures never go above 36c. The only two issues I have is firstly the Nexus 4 slides around on this thing like there is a layer of Teflon between the phone and charger. I heartily recommend LEAVING the protective film that the Maxell comes with ON the charger that stops the phone slipping.
Secondly forget about using daydream with the charger, in my experience daydream uses up too much power to be useful with wireless charging. The battery charges at snail pace and the phone heats up to over 45c with daydream enabled. I like the Maxell and I like wireless charging my first choice would be the Nexus Orb if it was available, but the Maxell does a good a job as any.

Just got one of these from eBay for £42. Seems to charge fine with the N4 the S line TPC case on.
My only, albeit minor, issue with it is the bright blue LED which illuminates while charging. This is easily resolved by making sure the N4 covers it or stick a bit of dark tape on top.

I just picked a Maxell Air Voltage charger up from Ebay here in the UK, it is a very nice bit of kit I must say and works great, the only downside is that the charging range isnt too good, I was expecting at least 6mm so that I could charge it whilst it was in my flip case, it wont charge through the flip case and it wont charge through any case that is metal or has a foil liner this of course is fairly obvious.
i am sure some of the thinner plastic half cases and gel cases it will be fine, I think that the Nillkin Fashion Shape Flip Leather Case is also OK with it so I will pick one of those up with it.
I tested the effective range with UK 2 x 1p pieces stacked on top of each other which is 3.0 mm thick in total, so if your case it over 3mm thick then it wont work without taking the phone out of the case, something to think about if you are going to get this charger.
I wouldnt hang on to get the orb charger, thats a long way off IMHO, the Maxell air voltage is a great unit, is cheap and will work with other QI devices, well worth getting it.

Did originally have daydream turned on and it was a little slow but now its off it charges great.

Cheers mate, I was a bit worried about charging through my S-Line case. I've just ordered one from play. I have a desktop stand, but sometimes the connection doesn't fit in properly.
Got my nillkin case for my n4 which is superb and can confirm the Maxwell does charge through it as the other poster mentioned so it isn't a one off, if the case was a little thicker it won't do it though so be warned

Mine is getting stuck at 89%. Then it goes in to a state of limbo where it disconnects, uses up a bit of charge, reconnects, gets back to 89% disconnects, etc etc.
Anyone else? Defective unit?
Also, has anyone else suffered severe battery life deterioration after using this? It may well just be coincidence but about 3 days after first using it my battery life has fallen off a cliff. The Android Kernal OS is suddenly showing up at over 30% usage on the stock battery data page, whereas before it was under 10%.
Working fine with mine no problems. But I find when it charges to 100% it waits until it drops to 95% before recharging again. This is fine as I understand that qi charging doesn't allow for trickle charging, so it's either full power or no power. I wouldn't say it degrades the battery life but rather it screws up the battery stats. To fix this I just plug the usb charger once a week or so.
I think the capacity reading gets messed a bit as due to the on/off charging after reaching full charge, since unlike trickle charging where the battery's voltage is kept constant, the voltage is always raising or falling. Depending on when you take your phone away with you in relation to its current charge state you might get a slightly lower capacity for that particular charge.

What im going to do to solve this is buy a electricity temporizator and set it to 3 h so it stops once those hours are done. I always charge mobile at the same hour.

It's actually better that many of these Qi chargers are only charging to 89 or 95% of capacity by the wireless charges. It's better for the long life of the battery. Charge them often too. Don't let it go down to 10% or 5%. Put them on the charger when your phone is down to 50% and take them off the charger when they get to 90%. It's easy to do with a wireless charger.

I'm actually aware that constant trickle charging at full charge isn't ideal for long term health of the battery. Which is why I mentioned I only plug the wired usb charger once a week. I only plug it in for about 30 mins so the voltage stabilises as to help the phone more accurately display its charge % state better. Obviously it's all subjective as I've yet to actually perform any tests to see if it's ture or not.
On the subject of long term battery health, trickle charging on wired may not be ideal, but nor is wireless charging due to heat it produces. During wireless charging, according to my battery stats widget the phone reaches 39°C, while wired usb it never goes above 22°C (room temp. basically). The good thing about wireless charging is the heat drops back down when the battery is full and the qi charger is no longer sending any current. But when the charge drops back down to 95 % it restarts charging again, and the heat returns.
So, which is more harmful to the battery, heat or constant trickle charging? In either cases it's still a good practice to remove the phone from the charger (both wired or wireless) once it's reached full charge.

I know this is a bad subject to bring into discussion but notice the S4 charger for the wall charger charges faster I bought a generic car charger for my last phone and it couldn't even keep up with the charge if I was using the GPS...... Any idea what a good car charger brand is or even Samsung makes for for the S4? I really would like a nice car charger that won't screw things up with my phone thanks all if you can just put your input if not thats ok too...

Generally I'm happy if I can use Google Maps navigation on a charger without losing any battery % but it would still be nice to know if I'm getting the fastest charge possible.

Generic car chargers, usually offers 700mah or 1000mah for the most.
It seems that getting 2000mah charger is the only good solution.

Battery Monitor Widget from the market will. It shows discharge rate when off charge on charging rate when on charger.

I have the same one. Works great.
Just keep in mind battery monitor widget does a best guess calculation on Samsung devices because Sammy refuses to put the code in that reports the actual current. Back on GB on my Captivate one of the roms had the code and it was nice but Samsung in its infinite wisdom deems it more important to include 500MB of bloat and omit this tiny important driver.

Just to point out.... While you do need a 2A+ charger, the cable also plays a huge factor. I've measured anywhere from 460mA to 1900mA depending on the cable plugged into it.

Imo its a waste of money... I personally am still going to use my 850mA chargers in most cases, but Ill keep my 2amp nearby in case I need a quick 20% mid day

S4 has a hardware limitation on charging current, right now it won't go above 1100mah while charging which is 1.1a, perhaps in future with kernel development we'll be able to raise the charging current but for now purchasing a charger above 2a would be completely useless.

On this point what you need to realize is that the usb cable loses a bunch of the power on the way... so like, a 3 foot cable might deliver most of the power to the phone ... a 10foot cable might only deliver 66% of it... so really a 2amp charger is whatthe s4 needed but going above it is kind of useless
The S4 actually goes to 1,910a when charging, I've checked with and app (galaxy charging current) that's why it charges so fast

Do the lights dim everywhere in your house?
Oh and guys/gals, you cannot get around Ohm's law. 2A at 5V is 10Watts. You can use a 10A (50W) PSU but your phone will only use what it's designed to charge at unless you increase the voltage which I don't recommend unless you like to smell burned electronics.
Larger power supplies do have an advantage, however. You can charge multiple devices at the same time, i.e. a tablet, phone, spare battery, all at once. Good to prepare for a storm like we had last night here.

Are you guys serious? I have the original charger from Samsung, mine charges at 1100 according to the same app

10w is not a lot btw... My laptop pulls 60w on load and a hair dryer is 1000w... I mean't 1.9A sry for the confusion in french we use "," for the decimals in numbers

1900 here for me as well, USB cords can also limit the current supplied, can only get this rate on a 6' (or less) my 10' and 15' each drop down quite a bit

Haha yes I figured, just being sarcastic, no harm meant.
I will add using this app I find interesting results of cable length vs. mA delivered. If you want to charge fast use a shorter cord.
I may connect it to a bench supply and see how it reacts to a gentle overvolt, say 5.5V. This could be what's needed to compensate for a longer cable, i.e. getting ~2A with a ten foot cable!

Just a thought but what about a 10ft+ cord with a 3 amp charger? I wonder if the 3 amp will bring up the charging?

The currents which we're discussing when charging apply from the phone to the battery which subsequently uses the battery voltage as a charging indicator. Those 1.9A only happen at low battery percentages with voltages around 3.6V or lower, with raising voltage the current is limited. This is basically what QC quickcharge is. I don't really see the gimmick in it, as such a logic could be emulated in software on any phone.

and then I found this (link above) with 2.1A
is it matter charging via 2.1A and not 2A? what is the different? it will charge faster/slower?

In Stock kernel there is current limit 1.9A. So everything above it, will be the same as 1.9A.
In reality, you will find that even 2.1A charger doesn't supply even 1.9A. Chinese charges definitely don't supply current thay claim. And beware of them - you may fry your device by such cheap charger.
Also, it heavily depends on USB cable as well. It has to be very short and very thick.
I have a Mediabridge car adapter that has a 2.1 amp charger on it. When I charge my S4 with it it barely charges faster than the 1 amp charger does. I think it charges at either 1.3 or 1.7 amps, sorry can't remember exactly.

I don't have the equipment to measure it exactly. So what I did was charge my phone from 50% for 40 minutes on my stock Samsung wall charger and then recorder the percentage it increased. I then took that number and assumed it was charging at 2 amps and used it as a baseline. Then I did the same test with my car adapter and recorded the results. The I figured out the percentage difference and came up with me estimates. I just don't have the data in front of me anymore but I remembered it being somewhere between 1.3 or 1.7.

Chargers, power supplies, etc, don't "decide" the amps that go to a device - the device "draws" a certain amount. Just because a lamp is plugged into a 20amp circuit in your home doesn't mean 20 amps are going to be shoved through the bulb.
So if, as sorg says, the phone is only going to "ask" for 1.9a, you could plug it into a 5 amp charger and it would make no difference.

No, your phone will NEVER charge faster than 1900 until a developer comes along and figures out how to hack the system to allow this. And it would be a potentiallly STUPID idea to charge faster than Samsung has deemed safe.
