I know this is a bad subject to bring into discussion but notice the S4 charger for the wall charger charges faster I bought a generic car charger for my last phone and it couldn't even keep up with the charge if I was using the GPS...... Any idea what a good car charger brand is or even Samsung makes for for the S4? I really would like a nice car charger that won't screw things up with my phone thanks all if you can just put your input if not thats ok too...
i bought this http://www.amazon.co.uk/MOFREDĀ®-Mic...sr=1-1&keywords=samsung+galaxy+s4+car+charger should be good
The Motorola with the blue light, pn SPN5400A.
I am also looking for a car charger that quickly charges the battery like the stock wall charger. I went from 1% to 50% in around 45 minutes with the stock wall charger the other day.
Try to find a 2000mA (2A) car charger

its 1 amp.
get at least a 2 amp charger @ OP
I agree 2Amp tends to be the way to go from what im learning but still looking for a great car charger lol
Is there a way within the UI to see how much charge the phone is getting? I have a generic USB car charger and I want to know if it's .5, 1, or 2 amps.
Generally I'm happy if I can use Google Maps navigation on a charger without losing any battery % but it would still be nice to know if I'm getting the fastest charge possible.

Generic car chargers, usually offers 700mah or 1000mah for the most.
It seems that getting 2000mah charger is the only good solution.

I have the same one. Works great.
Just keep in mind battery monitor widget does a best guess calculation on Samsung devices because Sammy refuses to put the code in that reports the actual current. Back on GB on my Captivate one of the roms had the code and it was nice but Samsung in its infinite wisdom deems it more important to include 500MB of bloat and omit this tiny important driver.

Can someone recommend a car charger that I can buy in the UK that can charge the S4 reliably at 2A? I tried a few so-called 2A chargers, but they are only able to deliver 1.1A (as measured by the Galaxy Current App), while the wall charger delivers 1.9A.

Pleomax is apparently a subsidiary company of Samsung, so I'm expecting compatibility/functionality to be good.
I ordered the following holder to go with it too, from the same manufacturer and seller, its currently in the same shipment as the charger:

Just to point out.... While you do need a 2A+ charger, the cable also plays a huge factor. I've measured anywhere from 460mA to 1900mA depending on the cable plugged into it.

I heard there is a difference between car charger. Some charge faster than others. I just bought one off ebay for 5 bucks. Damn thing charges maybe 10% after 30 minutes in my car. My nokia n95 car charger changed the phone from dead to full in 45 minutes and that battery lasted the same if not longer than the nexus one.
Also which phone dock should I buy, now that you can't buy a google/htc dock. I want one that is visually appealing.
This Motorola charger has been great. I can't remember how much its rated, but I think around 850mH.

Use this one too and love it
i use Griffin's. it has 2 usb, so it's good for charging my ipod and n1 at the same time. the bad side is, i think it don't have enough energy to charge my n1. it only slows the batt consumption. i use it a lot when i go for travels because i use my n1 as gps.
It makes sense to get the official N1 car dock. It's a sweet dock that can also be used to plug the charger directly into the phone.

Is it ok to use a car charger rated at 1.2 amps? Do we need exactly 1 amp or 960 m amp?

The phone draws whatever it wants. The rating on the charger just says what the charger is capable of outputting. The official nexus car dock, for example, uses a cigarette lighter adapter which is rated for 2 amps while a usb cable plugged into your computer is only rated for 500ma.
The problem with buying 1A car chargers is that the phone may not know how much it can draw and will default to taking just 500ma. Every charger has some sort of way of telling the phone what it can supply, such as shorting out the 2 signal pins or putting a resistor between them. every manufacturer has it's own standard and it's a guessing game as to whether it will pull 1A or 500ma. Iphones, for example, will not draw any current at all unless it sees the exact set of resistances across the 2 signal and ground pins which is just silly.

does the phone really charge so slow??
There's already a few threads discussing the slow charge time. Seems to be an issue for many. All Galaxy S phones seem to take a lot longer to charge than say an iPhone.
My Nexus S always makes it through a good 16+ hour day without needing a charge, and I always charge overnight while sleeping, so I haven't personally noticed this as an issue.
Like any smartphone these days, it's probably a good idea to just partial charge during the day when you're in a situation (like the car, or at your computer desk) that lets you. It's not necessary to do the full drain, full recharge only with the current battery technology.
Its odd, mine and my wife's phones take maybe 3 hours to get to full from sub30% yet that seems to be the outlier.

If the voltage is correct, the amperage should not be an issue...the phone should only draw the current it actually wants/needs.
But bear in mind, if your phone blows up, it's not my fault, I have no experience with that charger or it's actual ratings.
Has anyone managed to get a car charger for this phone?
I've just tried to charge the phone with my car charger modded to "AC" mode by shorting the middle pins... and the S4 gets nada...
Have they changed the charging mechanics?

Yup, the car charger still charges my old HTC, even with the Samsung cable... so there's definitely something different inside the charger...

Hmmm will have to look into getting a decent 2A charger then and NOT modifying it...
So I opened up my car charger and un-modded it back to original and it works like a charm now
I've got a 1A Belkin car charger and it seems to overload after a while when charging my gs4.
The green light on it blinks and my phone makes that sound when you plug in the charger.
Takes a while for it to happen but gets more frequent the longer you have it plugged in.
The charger works fine with my gf's nexus 4.

I'm using the Motorola charger (big blue circle). Got it for my Razr Maxx a year or so ago (I've gone through like 4 phones since then) and it works wonderfully. It's the best micro-USB car charger I've ever seen. Coiled cord, huge blue light (but not too bright since it's an ambient-style light), and charges quickly.

Different USB cables do pass different current even if using the same charging main. From tests I've done so far, a generic 3 ft USB 2.0 cable I randomly purchased online only allowed around 400 mA. An old Blackberry Torch 9810 cable allowed around 1200 mA. Original cable that came with the S4 allows 1900 mA. These numbers are from using the original wall charger main that came with phone.

My stock charger is us for galaxy s4 (samsung regular charger)
and then I found this (link above) with 2.1A
is it matter charging via 2.1A and not 2A? what is the different? it will charge faster/slower?
thanks
In Stock kernel there is current limit 1.9A. So everything above it, will be the same as 1.9A.
In reality, you will find that even 2.1A charger doesn't supply even 1.9A. Chinese charges definitely don't supply current thay claim. And beware of them - you may fry your device by such cheap charger.
Also, it heavily depends on USB cable as well. It has to be very short and very thick.
I have a Mediabridge car adapter that has a 2.1 amp charger on it. When I charge my S4 with it it barely charges faster than the 1 amp charger does. I think it charges at either 1.3 or 1.7 amps, sorry can't remember exactly.

I don't have the equipment to measure it exactly. So what I did was charge my phone from 50% for 40 minutes on my stock Samsung wall charger and then recorder the percentage it increased. I then took that number and assumed it was charging at 2 amps and used it as a baseline. Then I did the same test with my car adapter and recorded the results. The I figured out the percentage difference and came up with me estimates. I just don't have the data in front of me anymore but I remembered it being somewhere between 1.3 or 1.7.

Chargers, power supplies, etc, don't "decide" the amps that go to a device - the device "draws" a certain amount. Just because a lamp is plugged into a 20amp circuit in your home doesn't mean 20 amps are going to be shoved through the bulb.
So if, as sorg says, the phone is only going to "ask" for 1.9a, you could plug it into a 5 amp charger and it would make no difference.

You already got your answer above.
No, your phone will NEVER charge faster than 1900 until a developer comes along and figures out how to hack the system to allow this. And it would be a potentiallly STUPID idea to charge faster than Samsung has deemed safe.
Go here to find out how to test your charging rate:

No way! I call you on that one. Our 3 year old devices can't quick charge without damage. Please do not post such info without knowing 1st hand. Our custom kernels limit fast charge to 1.8 A for a good reason.
Sorry I thought this was the Galaxy Note 8 (new phone) forum. Confusing from the XDA app... Having a QuickCharge charger won't hurt on old devices, they will charge at the normal 2.1 or 1.8 amps. But I agree in this case (old tablet) it won't help (but it's not like the newer charger will damage the device--they scale back their charging gracefully).
