[Q] Confusion S-Off and unlocked bootloader - HTC Sensation

My friend has sensation 4g. he buy it second handed. Now he want me to flash some roms in his device. When i see the bootloader screen i see that his device is already S-off.
My question is his device bootloader unlocked or not?how can i know it??
hboot is 1.27.000 and its on ics
Now do i need to unlock bootloader or not?
And if i do unlock does it effect device cause its s-off already??
And i do want to flash jb or say cyanojenmod 4.1.2 roms?
So i need full information on this...
If anyone can help me understand i wil be great...

I think if you follow this thread you will find all your answers.

Also about the roms, my advice is read a bit about each one in the development section, and use the one you think will suit you more and like best. I personally use Albinoman's but everyone has his favourite choice. Good luck!

Hi,
If you are s-off and hboot 1.27 , then, you can flash any JB OR ICS ROM you like.
DO NOT GO TO HTC TO UNLOCK YOUR DEVICE!
Sent telepathically from my S4

You can flash any ROM, since the Phone is S-OFF!
But you are really advised to install Firmware-3.33 first! This is very important for any ROM to work well.
There is Universal Firmware-3.33 that would install on any device, but it is important what CID does the phone have now?
For this reason, very often people change the CID to 8 times 1, namely 11111111, which means "Any Region".
Check the CID via ADB Tools - Command Prompt right-click "Run As Administrator" and then after:
adb devices
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot getvar cid
or the more detailed
fastboot getvar all

You need S-OFF if you want to change the hboot/bootloader or the radio. SInce you have the latest versions of both it is not necessary at this moment. In you need to S-OFF by any reason it is possible via downgrading to older version that is supported by Revolutionary.
If you unlock the bootloader with HTCDev.com you will remain S-ON but will have the ability to flash custom Recovery, Kernel or ROMs and rooting as well. So basically you have the freedom to change your system according to your preferences
Hi thanks for the reply,
so it`s not neccessary to S-off to be able to root the phone? I will do some more reading before I take the plunge as I do not want to brick my new phone

Exactly.
Basically you will need to unlock your hboot at htcdev.com, then flash a custom recovery then
1) flash Superuser to have root or
2) flash a custom ROM, they are all prerooted

What about relocking hboot?
Thanks for your input into this thread by the way, I was led to believe according to the guide section that you must be s-off (therefore downgrade from 2.00.0002) in order to flash custom roms.

Just in case I was to send my device for a warranty fix or such!
Unlocking the bootloader at htcdev will void your warranty.
I am patiently waiting for May 2012 for my warranty to be over and then I will unlock my boot loader..
As said the htcdev unlock void your warranty, it will send the info of your phone to HTC.
You can do the HBOOT downgrade http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399331 and use Revolutionary to get S-OFF and if you need the warranty you can use eng hboot and flash a new RUU to get back to stock and S-ON.

Hi,
You are right.
1.27.000 is not currently supported.
You have to wait until it is...
No,there is no eta.
So basically I'm stuck with original firmware?
What can I do then, root? scid..? cwm?

Hi,
Yes,you can root and install CWM.
But you can only install ROMS with a 3.32 base(latest ICS)
So,6.6.2 is OK
Ok, thank you.
But I tried to flash the CWM taken from the guide thred putting the PG58IMG.zip in the root of the sd.
But when I start the bootloader it says wrong image...

Hi,
Try THIS ONE
Still says wrong image....
My cid num, got with adb, is: VODAP102.
Should I insert it in android-info?
Should I super cid the phone before cwm?
Youre gonna have to unlock your bootloader by using htc's official method (google it). Then youll be able to install CWM and whatever else. There are limitations, theres a good guide in the development section about htc official bootloader unlocker. Read that before attempting.

Yes you will have to use the HTC Dev method right now if you want to flash a custom ICS ROM being as those are the only ones you will be able to flash with the Hboot you have. But know this ahead of time the HYC De. Unlock is very different then the Revolutionary unlock. Click the link in my sig to learn mote about the HTc Dev unlock and what it allows you to do. But if I was you I would just wait until Revolutionary supports Hboot 1.27.0000, or someone comes up with a Hboot downgrade for the Sensation cause the HTC Dev method does not fully unlock all portitions except the radio portition like Revolutionary does. Plus it leaves evidence your bootloader has been unlocked so HTC can say your warranty is void. Check out this post to as it gives a little more insight on HTC Dev unlock.
So to root the device I have to CWM it, to CWM it I need to unlock the bootloader?
But, If not rooted, unlocked nor CWModded, can I just install ARHD?
Ok, let's take it the other way round:
My phone is locked, hboot 1.27.0000, S-on, cid VODAP102 and not rooted, but last official stock ics.
Now I want to install last ARHD, what should I do and how??

To flash AHRD you will have to have a unlocked bootloader, either by HTC Dev method or by Revolutionary method. Now as stated by you, malybru, and myself we all know Revolutionary is not compatible with Hboot 1.27.0000 (as of right now), which your device currently has. So this leaves only the HTC Dev method. Now I personally agree with others here on XDA, I would normally stay far away from unlocking via HTC Dev. But seeing as you bought your Sensation new with Hboot 1.27.0000, you really have no other alternative but to wait for Revolutionary to update or for some other means of unlocking becomes available. Also if you do manage to downgrade your Hboot you will have to use HTC Dev to do it.
Now I am in no way saying you should use HTC Dev, nor am I advocating HTC Dev. I am just trying to inform you. What you do with your device is your choice and your choice only. But what ever you do, please post back here with your decision and if applicable any results.
Also if you was wondering why you have to use HT Dev to downgrade Hboot, read this post. Yeah I know it is for GB ROMs but I imagine the same probably holds true for ICS. I mean it is the HTC Dev unlock that allowsyou to downgrade in that senario. But what do I know.

Sure, exploit H.Boot 1.27.0000 for S-Off is revolution, new model of HTC phone is same like HTC_One
****ing S-ON policy HTC because you total locked us
And that is why HTC always following behind Samsung nowadays
I'm waiting XDA revolution
Hi,
I'm new to this forum and new nothing about rooting until a few days ago...quickly discovered the fact that Revolution does not support 1.27.
I unlocked with HTC DEV, ran recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.0.9-pyramid.img using Fastboot CLI.
After that I backed up my stock Vodafone ICS ROM using CWM then switched to the XDA guide for rooting with su-2.3.6.3 and followed rest of XDA guides for installing a ROM (really useful guides - Thanks!!)
Within an hour I had gone from stock Vodafone ICS to Virtuous Inquisition-v4.0.1
I'll admit I got hooked up on flashing recovery and was given some guidance by a friendly soul but figured the rest out from this forum..

I recommend you to s-off your device, it makes everything easier for you.
I also recommend you to do a factory reset after flashing the ruu.
so:
1. flash stock recovery
2. relock your bootloader (fastboot oem lock)
3. run the ruu
4. factory reset
5. be happy to have the stock rom back
thanks

unbranded = you can use every carrier
branded = you can only use e.g. vodafone
it depends on your needs which custom rom you want to use.
if you only want a stable phone the stock rom should be enough.
trickdroid and viper one s are good too.
if you like to experiment a little and can life with bugs cm 10.1 and the other aosp (pure android) based roms should be good too.
and there is a thanks button for giving me a thanks hope I could help you
and yes if you are relocked you can unlock again, just follow the same steps again (flash unlock.bin etc.)
ruu only will run if the bootloader is unlocked (if you have s-off it doesnt matter)

uhm... as far as I know we only got the branding free JB ruu.
the other will not work because you alreade have the new hboot.
I think the best would be to follow the S-off guide and change your CID to a brandingfree one (HTC__001)
this also has the advantage that you will get updates sooner than the branded one and you can use every sim now.
if you follow the guide carefully and step by step it shouldnt be that difficult
the s-off procedure itself only takes ~5-10min

The 3 UK files are the RUUs which are labelled H3G.
Once you have S-OFF you can just run a lower RUU than your current software version and it will downgrade.
Without S-OFF it won't work though.

Yes, you need to fastboot the boot.img from the ROM zip you are flashing.
Also, don't use twrp 2.4 or higher. Use lower or cwm.

[HOWTO] [HTC One SV] Unbrand your phone to get the OTA updates

Bonjour everyone, here's a little guide on how to unbrand your phone in order to get the OTA updates notifications directly and be able to install them.
If you want to get S-OFF one day on your One SV, read this first. You need to change CID to SuperCID to do so, and it's not possible (for the moment) if you upgrade to JB
Basically this works as long as your phone model is sold unbranded somewhere in the world and that the people having such a phone got an OTA update.
For now, ther's no way to change CID if you're running JB and are S-ON. That means that this only work for One SV's running ICS who want to get the OTA updates.
As far as I know, it works on K2_U and K2_UL, since they both got an OTA update to JB.
The trick is simple, I didn't invent it and haven't been able to find its original founder, but thanks a lot to her or him !
I'm basically just a messenger here since I only tried out some stuff that worked with other phones, so thanks a lot to bkcokota, old.splatterhand and jmztaylor
Don't try it if you're worried, bricks happen, you'd be the only one responsible !
Here we go :
1. First you need to root your phone, here's how.
2. Change you CID using the same method than for the One S.
Personnaly, I changed it to "HTC__203", which is the CID unbranded HTC phones have in France (HTC-FRA).
For example, "HTC__001" is HTC-WWE, which stands for World Wide English.
You can change it to whatever CID you like : choose it well. I can only recommend to use HTC__203 since it's the only one I tried and that it worked, but do as you please !
3. Flash stock recovery back. You'll find it here or here. Flash it like you flashed CWM recovery (into fastboot, using fastboot flash recovery xxxxxx.img).
4. Relock your bootloader. It's possible that it's not necessary, but it can't hurt ("fastboot oem lock", when in fastboot usb)
5. Run a RUU that matches you unbranded CID to get an "unbranded" rom.
You'll find them here, for example. The "RUU_K2_UL_ICS_40_HTC_Europe_1.17.401.5_R....exe" one will work with HTC__203 and HTC__001 CIDs.
6. Go ask your phone if he can find any updates
WARNING : for the moment there's no way to change CID if you upgrade to JB since the newer HBOOT (v2.00) don't let you do it. That means that for now you won't be able to S-OFF if you upgrate to JB using this method. For now...
Nice one!
Only thing i would add for people to know:
if somebody want to get S-Off, they should change the CID to SuperCID 11111111 (or if you want 22222222,...).

Done, sir.
It was only said at the bottom of the message at first, but now I put it at the beginning as well.
There's one thing that I'm trying to get though : according to a lot of people and forums, you don't get OTA when you have SuperCID... but some poeple say they do.
It probably changes depending on the type of HTC phone, but also depending on the OTA (some got the first ones, but not the latest...).
I got the ota notification with SuperCID, i think it depends on more things.
But there i'm not far enough into it.
I have had no success at all. My story:
Updated a branded phone to JB, rooted. Then I did a moonshine S-off and changed CID to HTC__001 (even tried 11111111).
I have downloaded a ICS RUU (couldn't find stock K2_UL so I thought that I would download ICS first and then do OTA to JB) but I am getting error 158. I have checked md5 sum and it matches (http://androidfiles.org/ruu/getdown...0.14_2_10.49.40.11L_release_301902_signed.exe). Any ideas?
If you're on jb and hboot 2.00, that's normal... and written in the first post.
There is information that it is impossible to change CID while on JB and with 2.0 hboot, but I guess that I have had success in changing to superCID (at least this is what I can read in bootloader and using fastboot oem readcid command.
So, as far as I understand newer hboot won't let me use older RUU as well, right?
Is there any chance to make this for the k2cl ( boost mobile ) version?

old.splatterhand, you seem to know this and that about One SV. No chance for older RUU, right? I can't seem to find a clean WWE JB OTA update. I just want a clean, stock, not modified ROM from HTC and I thought RUU is the only way to go :crying: Any advices?

This was before moonshine was available. With S-Off i think it should be possible.

I think so.

To get it a bit clearer.
At this point i'm not very up to date, thats why i didn't answer til now.
I think (but i'm not sure) you can flash the ruu, if you are on hboot 1.0.
And as you are S-Off you should be able to downgrade hboot. But this is a very risky point, you can easily brick your device. Here is, how you have to do:

To change hboot you will need a PL80IMG.zip on sdcard with android-info.txt and hboot.img inside it.
reboot to bootloader and flash.

The thing what makes it difficult, is to get the hboot.img (its inside ics ruu), cause the htc ruu's encrypted and i only have heard about tools for linux which can decrypt it.
Thanks to your reply I did some research and I have managed to do what I wanted. I have downgraded hboot first (by extracting and encrypting ICS RUU using linux), then I could run RUU and now I am stock ICS with S-off and superCID
Should I post some files from RUU? 1.0 hboot or stock recovery? You guys need something?
Thanks for your helping hand old.splatterhand!

Glad, it worked for you.
Yes, of course, everything is appreciated! You can use this thread, please post ruu name too. You can look at my posts there. Hboot, boot.img, recovery, radio, would be fine.
HERE have other ruu

Wow, that's cool !
Did you use rollon's method and flashed PL80IMG.zip in bootloader mode ?
If yes, which android-info.txt did you use ?
If not, how did you do it ?

Even cooler for you.
Did you get the ota update notification for JB then ?
Did you manage to apply it ?
Thanks and congratulations !
Hi everyone.
Just a quick message to confirm that rollon's method works.
To downgrade you need to be S-OFF, extract and decrypt (with ruuveal, using linux or a linux virtualbox runned in windows) hboot and androidinfo from ICS RUU, put them in a zip named PL80IMG.zip, put it on your sd card and boot into bootloader. Then you can run the ICS RUU normally and you'll be back to stock ICS, with a "*** LOCKED ***" bootloader (not relocked !), will be able to go back to S-ON using "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3" (thanks to JMZ)...
You'll then have a locked S-ON out of box phone running 100% stock ICS with original boot, recovery and all that... who'll get the 2 JB OTA's...
In case anyone's interested

Bootloader Question

Thanks

What is ur hboot? U mite be able to use revolutionary to s-off. Much better in everyway
Also, If you unlock Bootloader, I highly recommend this one:
HTML:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679338
You can flash ROMS which require HBOOT 2.x WITHOUT writing commands in ADB.
With HTCDev you can unlock bootloader on any HBOOT and keep S-ON but if you want to S-OFF and unlock you have to downgrade from 2.x.x to lower HBOOT and use Revolutionary. Then you can change HBOOT as you wish but you can brick your phone if something goes wrong.
There's great guides here for everything so do a serach. GL
