Neither one as they are both thunderbolt plugs *NOT* mini display port, poor advertising on their part. A thunderbolt plug contains electrical signalling for both thunderbolt and mini display port but does not share the same physical connector.

One of the Apple FAQs I read indicated that DisplayPort will work with devices with a Thunderbolt port but not the other way around and that the wiring on Thunderbolt was bi-directional.
I was hoping to get a couple of adapters instead of a bunch of cables.
Just done some research. Thunderbolt and displayport sockets and plugs are very much related it turns out. The thunderbolt cable uses a displayport socket with additional contacts added in locations which shouldnt interfere with displayport wiring. So you should be able to plug a mini displayport straight into a thunderbolt socket, but you cannot necessarily plug a thunderbolt cable into a displayport, but a "thunderbolt" > HDMI adaptor would most likely just use the cheaper displayport plug for maximum compatibility. So it should work, but it might not, depends on whether the company is genuinely using a displayport plug or a thunderbolt plug.

I spoke with MonoPrice and they claim they will work - I'm going to give it a try. If they don't work I'll ship them back. If they do, they are a nice alternative to the Microsoft ones which are pricey.
I'll post a review of the adapters when they come.
Now I'm searching for a AC charger for the unit. I need a spare and I don't want to pay the $80 Microsoft wants.

Not sure what you mean. I plug my hdmi cable into the adapter and plug into tv. Video and sound is automatic. Now if the tv has a dvi port on back, you can get the display port to dvi adapter. Then I guess you'll have no sound then and have to route sound through headphone jack or so on the pro ?????

These are for the pro not the RT. The RT does *not* have a display port. It has HDMI instead (which I also think the pro should have had, seriously, who the hell has a display port, I have *never* in my life seen one, plenty of HDMI, DVI and VGA ports though).
I dont have an HDMI device without speakers sadly so I dont know how windows would handle sound. But I do know that if you plug an HDMI device into windows, and then plug in separate speakers (USB or 3.5mm audio jack) then windows outputs to the external speakers by default. Or you can right click the audio icon on your system tray, Playback devices, change it so that the RT speakers are in use and not HDMI speakers or whatever.

The reason for display port is its the newer high standard in media transfer or whatever. Hdmi "supposedly" tops out at 1080p content. Display port can put out 4k or higher content. All or most apple devices use display port also. Its just including the latest and greatest like the pro usb 3.0 port.
Display port is a higher functioning port than just plain hdmi. For example hdmi does not support daisy chain devices but display port does. This means you can run multiple displays from a single port, with the right adapter.

Hmm, the new Haswell based Dell's we got at work are all Display Port based. I guess it's something we're going to see more and more of. The new video card I got for my PC at home also came with Display Port along with all the other types.
DisplayPort appears to be intended more for the computer industry (for connecting to computer monitors, primarily), while HDMI appears to be intended more for most other consumer electronics (for connecting to TVs, primarily). I imagine that Microsoft figured that the Pro would more likely be used for real work, including in business environments, so DisplayPort made more sense, whereas the RT is more of a personal media consumption device (the kind that you use in front of the TV), so HDMI made more sense.

FWIW, the new HDMI 2.0 spec (I believe announced a few days after your post) supports 4K content. We ought to start seeing products with it by the end of the year.
Just an FYI but display port and thunderbolt both support daisy chaining devices, HDMI does not. This means you can attach multiple monitors to a single display port with the correct adapter.
HDMI is limited to a single output. You can amplify and split the output but it will not allow multiple independent displays.
I would much rather have a display port than an HDMI port.

My guess is that some devices can repurpose the pins on their HDMI port to output component video or VGA instead.
I'm fairly certain our devices don't fit into this category.
im surprised ours can even fit hdmi into micro usb.

My goal is to play the movies off of my Samsung Infuse in my Toyota Prius Plug In during long trips.
I found a company in Japan that sells a video in adapter for the Prius but its only a Composite RCA input (Yellow, Red, White).
That means I have to use the MHL adapter on my infuse, into an HDMI cable, into a video converter box, then composite rca's from the converter box to the Prius adapter.

MHL adapter connected to a HDMI/Composite RCA cable, then straight into the Prius adapter.
I dont know if this second option would work though. Do I need a converter to go from HDMI (digital) to composite (analog).

Many of the reviews labeled the video-out port as micro-HDMI, despite MS' saying that it requires a proprietary $40 adapter. Can anyone plug in a micro-HDMI cable and get a signal out to your TV?
It's not proprietary. One of the reviews from one of the bigger tech sites (can't remember which one right now) said they used a standard cable and it worked.

Confirmed. It works connecting to a 1080p TV. And, you can either extend, mirror, or display only on external monitor just like with a normal laptop external HDMI connector. If display only on external monitor, the resolution becomes 1920x1080. Very nice...

yep, its not proprietary. got mines working with no issues using one from ebay. connected to my receiver and outputting 1080p. windows RT actually auto installed a driver for my receiver so it could output sound via hdmi.
The exciting features of the Nexus 4 just keep on coming. It seems it will support a technology called SlimPort which allows you to use the micro USB to connect the phone to a second display via HDMI, DVI, VGA and DisplayPort.
The only connector available at present is for HDMI, which also charges the device while connected. Other connectors are to be released in the future.

In my Nexus 4 review, I noted that the device was the first shipping handset to include support for SlimPort via an Analogix ANX7808 SlimPort transmitter. When I wrote that review it wasn't immediately clear what advantages SlimPort offered over MHL, which has become relatively ubiquitous in the year or so since its introduction. Since then I've acquired the SlimPort microUSB to HDMI 1.4 SP1002 and VGA (D-SUB) SP2002 adapters from Analogix for testing out SlimPort on the Nexus 4.
SlimPort is a new video output standard which works over microUSB, and is effectively an MHL alternative based on the DisplayPort standard administered by VESA. SlimPort is offered both license and royalty free, and supports up to 1080p60 or 1080p30 with 3D content over HDMI 1.4 (up to 5.4 Gbps of bandwidth), in addition to support for DVI, VGA (up to 1366x768 and 720p at 60 Hz), and DisplayPort. What's different about SlimPort from a user-facing perspective is that external microUSB power is not required for the adapter to work and is instead only required for optional charging. At the same time, the adapters draw no power from the source to operate.
I've spent some time playing around with the SP1002 HDMI adapter, which I believe is based on ANX7730, and the SP2002 VGA adapter, which is likely based on ANX9832. As of this writing, the Analogix SP1002 adapter is available on Amazon for around $30 USD. I haven't seen the SP2002 available online anywhere yet, however.
When connected to the Nexus 4, the HDMI adapter rotates the UI into landscape and mirrors the display just as expected. Resolution is scaled to 1080p60 on the Nexus 4 up from the panel resolution of 1280x768, which results in some letterboxing. As expected there's no requirement to have microUSB power connected to the adapter, I tested it with and without external microUSB power, all this does is just enable charging.
I posted a video review (shot on the Samsung Galaxy Camera) demonstrating the Nexus 4 doing mirroring with the SlimPort SP1002 adapter and received a query about whether the combo enables multichannel audio over HDMI as well. I tested VLC for Android with some .MKVs I had laying around with 5.1 AAC tracks and found that VLC will decode the multichannel audio and ship it over as 5.1 PCM to my A/V Receiver, so this does work, surprisingly enough. There's no bitstreaming support as far as I can tell, however. As an aside I was able to playback a number of 720p MKVs with hardware decoding checked in VLC for Android and 5.1 audio out with no dropped frames. The Nexus 4 seems to be a passable platform if you're looking to play the occasional 720p video over HDMI — provided you have the free storage for it.
I also tested out the SP2002 microUSB SlimPort to VGA adapter, which has a longer cable and correspondingly beefier module for accommodating the D-SUB connector on the end. I tried with a Dell G2410 LCD display and XGA resolution DLP projector and saw an output resolution of VGA (640x480 at 60 Hz), which wasn't quite what I expected. The SP2002 should work just fine with 720p60 over VGA, and I know both monitors expose the proper EDID, it seems as though the Nexus 4 just defaults to this mode. Just like the HDMI adapter there's a microUSB port on the back for optional charging, though the dongle doesn't require external power to operate.
Thus far I'm fairly impressed with SlimPort. I enjoyed discrete microHDMI connections on devices when that was the norm, though finding a microHDMI to HDMI cable was always the challenge. Later MHL seemed a step in the right direction, but requiring three cables to do display mirroring seemed like a bit much. With SlimPort I think we've finally arrived at something close to ideal with the standard not requiring external power to function. It will be interesting to see how SlimPort, MHL, and Miracast adoption fare in the coming year as mirroring to a larger display is in the cards as a convergence trend for smartphones and tablets.

I questioned that at first as well. If you follow the link to the adapter and look at the pics you'll notice that it has a USB input. I assume this has to be connected to charge the phone. As far as I'm aware HDMI doesn't carry power.
Only TVs with built in MHL HDMI Ports provide power.

I bought one. It seems like the packaging said something about the micro usb port being optional if you want it to charge, but I threw that stuff away and don't have an N4 to test with.
I think the "HDTV Cable" on the SlimPort site is going to be a cable that's micro usb (SlimPort) on one side, and HDMI on the other without any power input.

As funny as that sounds, that would actually be nice. I know it's not SlimPort, but I use a Monoprice MHL-HDMI adapter currently. It requires power to work. Unfortunately, it can't negotiate high current and the phone shows USB charge mode. But with the screen active, it ends up losing 10-100ma. I haven't researched the actual micro-usb pinout to see if video uses the usb data pins or what. If somehow it doesn't, I might be able to short them out and have it go into AC charge mode.
Or maybe the better MHL adapters actually do negotiation and do charge?
Either way, hopefully the initial feedback on the N4 is good enough that I can overlook the fixed battery and storage.

My MHL adapter charged my GS3 charged when watching the Avengers movie Samsung gave T-Mobile GS3 customers. It was a pretty slow charge, but prevented my battery from dying like it should have.
I think this would be a lot more appealing in dock form.
The cable+block adapters are always a bit awkward to connect up and actually use in my opinion.

Mine arrived from Amazon yesterday but I can't get a picture on the TV, when I plug everything in the screen on the N4 rotates to landscape and the phone loses sound, all good so far. But when I select HDMI source on the TV I just get a black screen.
This is annoying because the S3 worked perfectly with the Samsung adaptor.

Obviously no integrated mini-hdmi port on the device. Me thinks the bandwidth, complex data transport (video + sound) plus dcma characteristics of a modern hdmi interface can not be emulated via OTG (usb port). So I'll wager a semi-educated guess - NO.
Read somewhere the device supports miracast and/or chromecast but haven't dabbled with those directly.

I tried with a mhl cable, which is micro usb like the charging cable and must be connected via normal hdmi to tv and via usb to some sort of powersorce
Chromecast Mirroring works with fireOS 5.3.1. though the resolution is pretty bad.. mirroring is not working with the latest cm12.1 rom. Others reported it worked with an older build of cm12.1 but couldn't find out which built that was and where to get it.

it does not connect to a normal HDMI port, it must be an MHL compatible HDMI port on the back of the display. Usually the letters MHL will be above the specified port.

I have a Xperia Z5 and hdmi via hdml works fine with the same cable and port...
The MHL port has the same form as an HDMI port, but it isn't HDMI. HDMI is High-Definition Multimedia Interface, a standard connector included on most new TVs, which allows for uncompressed high-definition digital video and multi-channel audio via a single cable. MHL also allows for the same quality of video and audio input, and uses the same physical end-connector, but it's a different technology that uses five wires or pins to transmit high-def video and audio from a device to your TV while at the same time sending power back to the device.

Look. My Xperia supports MHL. Mhl works fine with my tv and the same cable. The fire tablet however does not. I hate fire thats why I flashed CM12 today

As previously noted there is no evidence the 5th gen Fire will support MHL due to kernel (and possibly hardware/hardwire) restrictions. I would be shocked of Amazon baked in that capability. Hope I'm wrong ....

Err, no...you can't. Absolutely no way USB2 interface will support bandwidth required by HDMI not to mention HDCP support.

You can use TeamViewer app on your Fire tablet to mirror through PC and mobile. But no capturing audio in TeamViewer, it's only in tablet speaker. You want to using Bluetooth speaker.
Just to contribute, I tried a very cheap and simple looking microUSB to HDMI cable (probably not even MHL, no option to add a power source)
and I can't see any communication between the Fire 7 (5th generation) tablet and my non-smart TV.
Same results when I tried with AmazonOS, and with LineageOS 12.1 recently.
Maybe it would work if there was a way to provide more power to the cable?
However, this cheap cable does not give that option.
And connecting the microUSB part of the cable to the Fire tablet
means that I cannot charge it at the same time.
If I could figure out how to charge the tablet at the same time,
maybe the TV would receive a signal from the cable?
I also tried this cable with my android phone and again, nothing.
Maybe it's the cheap cable. Maybe it's not compatible with anything I own.
My non-smart TV does not seem to have internet capabilities either
but does have USB ports (I have a USB wifi antenna but I doubt the TV has the software to be able to do anything with it).
