[Q] How do you let testers test paid apps? - Other Tools & General Discussion

I noticed that if you want to let testers test paid apps in the merket they have to buy the app (what I think is not right...)
I can't make the app free cause their no rollback to paid option.
How do you let testers test your paid apps?
(I have to test it with the market cause I want a feedback about the way it license the app)

The problem is not when I test my app, Its when I want other to test it.

I used testflightapp (its a website not app). Good service which lets you upload an apk of say your full version, and then set up a list of testers. The testers will get notified and when they login to the site with their device connected, it will download the apk to their device.
Having the testflight site handle installing the beta apk is good since it also tracks each copy so that if one of your beta testers releases your apk into the wild you know the guilty party.

Any help with this?
I'll ask again, How can I let other people test my paid apps with out the need to buy the test app...?

What I've seen on the market are:
Locked features - choosing which features are essential and which are gimmicks is key
Demo version - after x minutes or after opening x times app dies and only gives message to go buy app.
Free older version - self-explanatory.
Stable + Beta versions - beta is testing with sporadic improvements and possible sudden incompatibility whereas stable costs money but ensures compatibility and great performance.
I don't think I've seen any other way of doing it, it really depends on what type of app it is though. The pros and cons for each of these differ, but I'd ask myself: "How would I want to test someones paid app?"
I feel that's what's going to get you best results and better user feedback/experience.
So what type of app is it?

I think that mine is the last option: Stable + Beta (Alpha) versions
Can you please explain Where did you see this options and how they help me let testers test my paid app for free???

What he means is that you release 2 version of your app on the market!
1. Stable version that needs to be paid for.
2. Beta version with bugs/unstable for free and testing!

Technically they were both free, but the idea is there. I saw it with Firefox Browser.
They do a stable release and their beta that let's you test out the new stuff and provide feedback.
You can do the 2 apps then charge for 1. Hell, you can do 3 apps, 1 alpha, 1 stable, 1 old version to let other people who aren't interested in helping the app improve, but still want to try it, I'd keep it several versions behind.
If you did 3 I'd say keep the old nice but somewhat bare bones. Then have the stable version with everything that you know works, then the alpha with all the new stuff plus the added features of direct e-mail + constant self logging (keeping only last 3-5 minutes) + auto attach crash report or something to that effect to make the suggestions/bug reporting easier on those helping you, this way anyone not savvy enough to give a detailed report can simply say what they were doing at the time and the attached crash report can give you more technical info than just "I clicked on that button and it closed". Just in case something isn't right, your user will already be telling you which button, in case the crash report has the call/command/etc mislabeled.
Since you'd be releasing alpha first, you can get feedback on how much your users would be willing to pay for it (if there isn't anything else like it on the market). This way you don't overcharge and lose potential customers, but also you won't undercharge too much and lose those extra pennies. They add up quick.
***edit
Just came across Neutron Music Player.
They do a 5 day trial.
You could also try something like that, though I'd say a week instead of 5 days. But that's just me

Ummm, Yeah, post 1 as paid and 1 as free. Make the free version your Beta. I don't think Google forces you to put a charge on your apps if you don't want to. Course, I wouldn't know for sure since I've never posted an app on the Play store.

You send the version through distribution platforms like Ubertesters this way they are not going through the stores and the testers do not have to pay. Further more the distribution is in push mode so they get it to their mobiles when you like it.
Ubertesters as a Mobile APP Testing Platform has many more features that will help you monitor and communicate with the testers

[Q] TotalCare -- anyone tried this Android security app?

It looks like a great free alternative to remote security apps like WaveSecure, but I don't want to be the first one to try it. Is there a way to check whether an app like this is doing shady things with my data?
http://www.appbrain.com/app/totalcare-remote-management/com.care
Developer's site: http://advantal.net/totalcare/
App was being unpublished on d market for few days. Its available again though. Excellent app if you ask me.
Could have earned a few dollars if it was paid.
I contacted the developer. He's onto it's Pro version which will be a paid one with server support. Just grab this one in case they remove it again.
Cheers 2 d developer.
Anyone else?
Ok... I'm d developer of this app...
The app is quite trustworthy... more than 2000 hits till now...
I guess that much is enough to try it...
Its not in beta anymore bdw...

[APP] App Inventor Market Helper

For some time now I have been getting emails from random people who have seen my apps on the market, and then see that I used Google's App Inventor to make them, and then see that I was actually able to publish the app in the market. And they all want the same thing, for me to make their apps market ready. So that is the main point of this app, To help you, help yourself. First I will try and show you how to do it yourself, with a video, and then I will show you actual forum where I learned how to publish the app. And then finally if you so choose you may send me the app and I will set it up for you. But please don't send me junk. I will be looking at each app just to make sure, I don't want to be the cause for filling the market with more useless junk.
Requirements:
App Inventor Extender
The actual .apk file for your app saved on the sd card
Active data connection
Once I receive the app I will do my best to get it done right away for you, but im not a machine so even though it only takes about 5 minutes to do it. Expect most of them to be done my 10pm est because that is when im home working on this stuff. Maybe you can use that as an incentive to learn it on your own lol.
One last thing, I am offering this service completely free of charge, but if you feel inclined to perhaps deposit a few doubloons into Paypal account I will have a donate link in the app just for that occasion. Or maybe you don't feel like donating through Paypal, you could always consider the donate version of my pet game, but of course you would need the free version for it to work properly. But weather you do or don't, it doesn't matter, I will still work on your app

[Q] Paid full or lite for free?

Hi all!
Q: What app do you prefer: paid full versions, or lite for free?
I mean, how important for you is it to have the opportunity to test free?
Q: How often do you buy the application without testing of lite or trial?
I find it incredibly important to have a free version (with ads) to at least get a feel for an application if at all possible. The 15 minute time limit is simply too short to test features of some applications.
I've only paid for two applications, and I used the lite version before upgrading on both of them.
As a developer I have had moderate success using this model, though I have ended up making more with the ads in the lite version than I have with the paid!
free version + adfree
I have no chance other then using free apps because without a creditcard there is no way to buy something in android market. I could use some alternate market and buy with paypal but most of the apps I like aren't in those markets.
The only app I bought was LauncherPro
So, you want the developers to just build you apps and not get anything for doing it? Click an ad, it makes the dev happy!

[APP 2.3+] 3C Toolbox (aka Android Tuner)

Dear users,
Considering all 3C apps are now based on the same source code, they all behave the same way, and will exhibit the same issues. Any queries will also likely applies to all apps.
To make my life easier while continuing to provide support here (and start with a clean slate), I decided to close all my app threads and open a fresh new thread here.
With your continuous help and support, the past 4 years have been a great adventure and experience. Let's take a fresh start and continue this amazing adventure.
Thank you all!
*** See at the end of this post on how to get support for any issues ***
The most comprehensive toolbox to save battery, tweak, tune, backup, secure and monitor any Android devices running any ROMs, any kernels.
What is 3C Toolbox
Replaces 20+ apps easily worth 30€ for the price of a couple of beers!
NB: Starting with version 1.0.3, Android 2.2.x and 2.1.x are no longer supported. App supports Android 2.3 and above, including Android L preview.
Safest root app on Play Store: I run the app and all its features on at least 4 devices every day, and change 3 of them frequently for testing purposes. With about 250.000+ actual users, it's pretty safe to assume the app is very safe. App can create a reset package to disable all system tweak features from CWM/TWRP at any time. App has automatic fallback in case of boot loops while re-configuring the CPU.

Please explain this in a support request from app settings, help and support so we can provide the appropriate option to use in 'mA retrieval method' of battery / monitoring settings and add out-of-the-box support for your device. All necessary information is provided in the request's attachments.
◊ How to get support for any other issues
Please send a support request from app settings, help and support. You need to clearly explain your issue, attach any relevant screenshots showing where and how the issue occurs. I will not provide any support here.
All I ask is to provide reasonable details for me to be able to help, empty requests are mostly trashed, I keep one requests per device for the sake of a possible source of information for how the app supports things, to possibly fix things too or compare between variants of the same device.
For example a support request contain the following (you can check the content before sending it!),
all discovered SD cards, very useful for any related issues, including the mentioned read cache stuff.
app installation path and configuration, for xposed, battery, cpu, tweaks, apps or task managers problems.
battery history and configuration for any battery problems.
CPU configuration for CPU problems, including thermal, mp, voltage, etc
The idea is that you explain the observed issue, possibly add a screenshot so that I know exactly where to look for (app has 100+ screens and sometimes words don't mean the same for you and me), and there I can really do a good job at helping you.
PS: And so you know, I hate liars, insults, disrespect and myself. So please try to avoid those when requesting support.
Actually if you want support, posting the whole support request content, the screenshot and details here should be ok. Doing otherwise, I'll either ignore you completely or send you elsewhere very quickly, you want to leave me a one star rating, so be it: developing is my passion and I love it, you want my help, do it the right way or don't at all. I don't develop for stars, I develop for fun.

Hi 3c,
Not a bad idea to make an "all in one", just need to see about memory, battery and CPU usage... but I am pretty confident about that
No more update for System Tuner pro?
In all cases I buy it! (although slightly damage the impressive increase in the price ).
Thanks and congratulations for your new app

I've updated the first post with more information about that. Will publish an updated APK to ask user permission before installing it within the next hour.
EDIT: Didn't expected you guys to be so quick while I finalize the publishing of all required information.
By the way, the uninstall process can't uninstall other stuff, but as a rooted device, you should have no problem getting rid of this APK.
Please try the new APK published a minute ago (available in a couple of hours) that will allow you to refuse the APK installation.

Yes, just contact me with the order lists (bmw, system tuner and the new android tuner) and I'll refund old apps. This is the migration plan I'm working on.
EDIT: As of December 20th, 2013, direct refunds on Play Store are no longer possible. This was the only available way to offer discounts in a decent way. PayPal was an alternative available until February 2014, but it was abandonned because of the complexity, 30+% extra fees and the lack of global support (some countries could not receive refunds).

Yes, high price for now to avoid users who just try any apps and put comments after a few minutes of testing. And also to be able to offer discounts by refunding old apps paid version.
Nevertheless there will be updates on existing apps (not everyone wants an all in one app) with existing improvements, except features that require additional permissions.
Do you think youll ever add ability to spoof app permissions? And let user input the value... This would be an ultimate feature!

I'm looking into this actually, along with a smart "renicer", but both requires hacking Android or every APK to monitor and it turns out to be very complex.
There's 3 existing solutions on Market today:
- Hacking of Android class loader, as done by LBE Security app.
- Hacking of APK installed, as done by SRT Guard
- Patching the ROM like PDroid does.
They all have their advantages and problems, but the APK hacking seems the best option to go for as it results in a more stable experience, not as dependent on Android version as the 2 others and probably less disruptive as LBE can be when it messes up one's device. But then I'm not sure an APK can actually be installed properly
That said, I'm still looking into the first solution hacking app loading directly.

Is this [really] compatible with gingerbread? It lags, 'freezes' on screen and I have to long click the home button. I am using a sensation 4g 2.3.4. I'll get a logcat if you will find that that will help.

Thanks, appreciated. I'm sure your new entry will be more useful to new users.
So I still hope you can enjoy my new app and report any of your findings, directly here or best is using the 'support request' from the app settings, it provides a lot of useful information for debugging

Yes it is compatible. When did it lag? After requesting to install the system app or at some other times?
When lagging, the OS usually creates a file in /data/anr/traces.txt. If you experience a new lag, you can send it to me, possibly using the support request feature in the app settings. You can then attach a file to the newly created email.
When it comes to lags (or ANRs for that matter), logcat is useless. It only mentions a reference to the traces.txt file

To me (if I'm wrong it's all user error) the system apk it was requesting to install (it appeared to me) was for ics/jb, so I refused the install. Your app kept requesting to install the extras. After a little thought - is the extra apk mandatory? No intention to cause any concern if what I'm experiencing is nonsense. I have not rated your app on the play store.
It lagged randomly.

The extra APK is now only for specific toggles as I manage to find a different work around for the JB logcat issue. Those toggles include the APN (mobile data), background data (this one's obsolete), debug mode, unknown sources, gps and wifi localization. The 1 useful toggles is for GPS though.
Until you press 'do not ask again', the app would continue to request the APK installation ;(
As for the lags you're experiencing that seems like a bug. Have you found any trace.txt in /data/anr directory by any chance?
It's just fair to be concerned with things like that, I can understand. But installing an app requesting 35 permissions, then granting root access to that app and then being scared about a 40Kb APK being installed on /system folder is quite funny actually.
If I may make this comparison, it's like letting a heavily armed man (the 35 permissions+root) in your home and then being worried being he is hiding a wallet (the 40Kb apk) in your home!
Anyway, bad comments always call for improvements

Seems permissions are about the same as some system apps. the taces.txt is up for you. Hope it does something helpful. Thanks for the app. I had sent a PM with the information about the purchases. I do not use google wallet.
Awesome news that you are working on user defined app permissions. I really hope you can find a good work around. And I do currently use SRT appguard in conjuction with Android Tuner and I did notice it seems to handle disabling app permissions pretty good. The only downside is that you won't get app updates from market but that's not a big deal to me. I think if you can get the spoofing action to work, a lot of people are going to want your app. There are plenty of times I haven't downloaded an app because I didn't like it's permissions. So being able to control them without breaking the app will be a dream come true.

[APP][FREE] Android MOD Market

I have been working on this app for a long time. I think it is finally at a stage where I can say it is stable and ready for the masses to take hold. It has been listed on google play now for over a year as a paid and free app.
When I worked on ROM's it was tedious updating so many threads after completing a new update. So I developed Android MOD Market
Android MOD Market is an app that scavenges through CyonaogenMOD, MIUI-US and XDA searching for APPs, MODS and ROMS; reads the posts, picks out information and makes it available in an easily searchable and categorized app.
I guess you could call it a ROM, MOD and APP search engine with some added features. You can set presets for your favorite listings and have it notify you when the listing is updated.
Unlike ROM Manger, GOO-IM or many other popular apps and update notifiers, AMM does not require the developer to do anything additional but post it to a forum thread. New listings are usually picked up by AMM with in a few hours and any update is available immediately to a user.
You can view the AMM website (in my sig) and view the listings there, get the free app from Google Play (ad supported) or if ads aren't your thing feel free to purchase an ad free version also Available on Google Play.
Check it out here...
