1. Rooting is safe in every devices. Its actually the process of letting you access the System files which would be locked by your Device Manufacturer. But before rooting, you must have a knowledge on why to root? Do I really need root? etc. and knowing that rooting voids your warranty. Rooting actually doesn't affect another device-specific applications like Bravia Engine or Radio app etc. but make sure you are doing it right and if these bugs have been reported be ready to face it too. Read through the Xperia U section for more info.
2. CWM = ClockWorkMod recovery, its a custom Recovery which has lot more options than your stock recovery which is coming with your Stock ROM. CyanogenMod is a customized Android ROM which has additional features built on their own and incorporated by themselves, and will be pure 'Vanilla' android which is as seen in the Nexus devices. In short, no skin'ing or theme'ing on UI will be there like TouchWiz UI by Samsung, Sense UI by HTC or Timescape or Xperia UI by Sony.
Bootloader is the space between you and your device which controls the device booting, partitions, recovery, fastboot etc. In short, messing with the bootloader will brick your device if its done wrongly. In Sony devices the Bootloader will be locked and Sony has provided detailed instructions on how to unlock it. I guess, bootloader is to be unlocked if you want to install custom ROMs, recovery etc.
3. Yes, you can. No drawbacks. 90% of XDA member's devices are rooted.
I suggest you read this thread - Getting Started:Rooting,Bootloader Unlocking,Recovery,Custom ROM installation & more and browse through your device forum for more. Cheers !!

[Q] What to install/tweak after rooting your device

So, what would you do after you root your phone, considering that you dont plan to install a custom ROM?
Personally, I have an HTC Desire C, and after rooting it these things come in mind:
1) Install CWM Touch Recovery
2) Install Busybox/Titanium Backup/SuperSU/Terminal Emulator/SetCPU
3) Install preferred misc applications (messenger/browser etc)
What do you do after you root your phone?
Also, what are other ways to customize your device after rooting it (tweaks etc)? What do you suggest?
Thanks go to everyone who takes a minute to answer this question!:fingers-crossed:
This one's easy.
Very first thing, save my efs folder.
Second, install wifikill to boot random arses from hogging the internet

Sounds good to me. I dont know yet why you would want to save your efs folder, but I will look it up.
Any other suggestions?
Conserning tweaks, i found this and this.
Are they any good? Im not saying that the original posters didnt do a good job, I just have no idea conserning tweaks.

Forget about using these modded scripts.
For your Desire C, flash this custom rom: Nameless ROM
There's a heavily modded version of this ROM on page 34/5, which has got those tweaks integrated along with an OC Kernel to flash.
I'd recommend using CWM to backup your stock rom and to repeat this after each "tweak" or re-flash of roms.
hello and sorry if i'm in the wrong thread

Do you mean the Sony Xperia Live Walkman?
If so, then I found this thread that you might find of some use.
As for unlocking the bootloader, sony have their own guide and method: check this guide.
As Sony mention, your warranty, if you have one, will be void once you have unlocked your bootloader, but imo it is worth it!
Once you've done all that, flash a copy of CWM and from there you can flash any custom roms that are available for your device!
Remember, always backup your current rom before flashing a new one!
If you need any other help/advice, PM me as your post is in the wrong thread!

[Xperia J] Hi! Noob here!

Hi , I just get Xperia J and I'm noob on Xperia J forum. I searched all day and I didn't find the best way to root phone,to unlock bootloader- i have 13w04 code,is it ok to unlock bootloader, and please post all links. And yes one thing I need is what is the best rom ,can be also custom for Xperia J,post link?
Thank you ! It's hard when you know all things about xda x8 thread and then you get new phone and I'm noob again :good:
Info:
ST26i
4.0.4
11.0.A.7.5
Is it safe to root and unlock bootloader with flashtool,on x8 I did all things with flashtool ??? There's no drivers for xperia j for flashtool! I'm really scared,I don't want to get hard brick
Unlock bootloader via sony site, root with unlockroot.com, make sure you DL the unlockRoot Pro version, you don't need to buy it, just DL it.Run it afterwards, go next on everything but the adware it tells you to install, just press cancel on that(toolbars and such). After it is installed connect your device with debugging on, launch unlockroot, and click root, select your device, let the app do its magic, afterwards you'll get a popup about a powersaver app, press no, and on the next screen it will ask you to reboot your phone, reboot it and you're rooted.
Flashtool here is used only for reflashing stock fw when you mess up/reflashing kernels. It doesn't play a that much important role.

Thanks man! What about custom roms are better then stock? On x8 custom roms was better then stock. But on xperia J stock rom is great! I buy phone yesterday and I have 50%,they say to me that I must to use phone until battery die,I listen to music, call ,wifi,fb,temple run 2... After one day I get 1% and I left phone,I didn't using it,after 30 minutes my phone have 2% . Now it's still have 2%. I can't wait that my battery die,I'll charge phone to 100% and I'll root my phone, maybe soon I'll unlock bootloader
CM is the only available ROM atm for J if i'm not mistaken, but before you flash the one from the FXP topic, please try adfad666's CAF kernel one.If it works as it should, you could get the ball rolling and get better kernels for the J, and if later possible ,all devices. It is also CM.I have a Tipo atm, but CM has a huge effect on the battery(lower standby time, etc)
To be honest, I only use it cause it has a working DSPManager and I can't DSP to work on a stock ROM.
I forgot to mention this before, just before you unlock bootloader, type this in dialpad:
*#*#7378423#*#*
Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with unlocking bootloader. If it's no/it's not there, you cannot unlock and do not attempt to unlock.

I'll stay on stock rom then,I'll just root phone and delete all unused apps from system Because battery time is very, very, very good!:good:
One question: If I unlock bootloader, will be phone faster or what? Do I need to flash custom kernels..?
If you unlock the bootloader, all your data on phone(not on memory card) will be erased, so make sure you backup what you have. After that you will be able to flash custom kernels and such.I recommend unlocking bootloader and flashing Rachit Rawat's Vengeance kernel in the original android development section, for J.Try 1.33 in the mediafire folder, I see it's only for J.Flash kernel via fastboot with flashtool.Once you flash that kernel, you can also root it with one of the available zips in the thread's 1st post, I recommend SuperSU.
It has a OC to 1.3ghz, which reported by a handful of users so far, makes the J lagfree.

If I'll flash one of this kernel, what will be diferent?
The thread says what the kernel features, most important the OC function.Don't worry, it's tested and it's stable on the J.
Try 1.33 from the link in the 2nd post.

Ok,thank you very much for helping me! What about if I want to get back stock kernel, can you send me working one link?
And can I root and unlock botloader on 11.0.a.7.5???
There is no need for custom roms at the moment. We need to wait till developers make some good rom.
Unlocking the bootloader is just adding the permisson to flash custom roms which have nothing to do with stock rom or custom kernels. Will not affect your phone. You should just root it.
If you are not satisfied with the performance of your phone then flash custom kernel. But they are not complete or stable yet.
But you really need to root it to delete unused apps, install custom roms which are stock rom mods (for both bootloaders), install some apps, mods.
Once you flash the new kernel you can root with one of the zips in the thread.Yes, that fw is rootable.Just flash kernel and use one of the zips.I'm recommending the kernel hard because it is THAT good. For the stock kernel, I don't have it as it is in the stock FW.Let me DL it and I'll upload the stock for you.

Okey Because I have x8 before and without unlocked bootloader stock rom was crap!
Can I root phone firmware 11.0.a.7.5???
Stock FW is rootable as I mentioned before with unlockroot.com's UnlockRoot Pro, which you can DL for free, just press Download instead of buy now.Install it, cancel on the adware stuff, launch it, connect device with debugging on, and you're good to go.

Stock rom is still crap, just there is nothing better at the moment.
Developers working on it...Till then wait.
We can now only mod Stock rom to make it better.
Or use incomplete versions of stock rom which have serious bugs and are worse than stock.
Okey I root phone and unlock bootloader. I want to ask if I flash cstom kernel, can I use it on stock rom? Or custom kernels are just for cm roms?

[Q] Help regarding complete rooting process

Okay, first of all, I'd like to say that Sony sucks big time, since they didn't provide an official update for a beauty such as Xperia L. It's been almost 1.5 years since I brought my Xperia, and having voided the warranty already, I'd like to root the phone and flash a custom ROM and Kernel.
Here's the problem, though. I don't know the exact steps to do so. According to my knowledge, you have to:
Root Phone
Unlock Bootloader
Flash Kernel
Flash ROM
Another set of specifics I'd like to add -
The ROM I want - CM12 by Varun Chitre (That guy's a genius!)
The Kernel I want - ThunderZap (Again, by Varun Chitre)
Can anyone please tell me the steps I need to follow in order to flash the items specified above safely onto my phone? I'm really confused, because everyone seems to have their own app/software/method to do so.
Also, I did try rooting my phone by downloading the RootKit for Xperia L. However, when I open the SuperSU app (I've updated the app too), it says: "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!". After encountering this error, I backed off! Can someone please, please explain the proper steps to do it? Links will also be infinitely helpful!

Hello fellow android users. I would like some help with rooting my phone. My phone is an Xperia L C2105
I have never rooted before and I am not sure how to do it or what files I need and where to download all these files. I would like to root to install custom roms and make my phone perform better overall. I am not sure what the best roms are for the Xperia L.
If there is a guide or links to certain roms etc. or if somebody could guide me through on how to root. Much Appreciated.

Hello thank you. I have rooted the phone. How would I unlock the Bootloader? I have tried multiple ways from the forum posts but I can't seem to do it. I have tried following each step and just can't do it. Is there any video which shows how or a post which shows every single step? If someone could show me how to do it once then I will know how to everytime. At the moment it looks all complicated and not sure if I have messed my phone up.
I'll help you if you want! https://www.facebook.com/iasashvili Get flashtool, all neccesary drivers, get unlock code from sony.... Go to fastboot mode and tick on Unlock Bootloader mark... Than paste the code and reboot. If you get bootloop,it's normal, just flash stock ftf from flashtool. In case of problems, pm me on facebook

FAQ for Z3 all models

Hello everybody, as not only in this subthread I see many questions being repeated I thought it could be nice to have an explanation for most of them. Please feel free to add answers! Questions are sorted into:
General
Root
Recovery
Xposed
Bootloader
Rom
General
Q: Which specs does my phone have?
A: Have a look at gsmarena.com, they provide splendid information to all devices.
Q: Where is the difference between (e.g.) D6603 and D6633?
A: The Xperia Z3 series is mainly divided into: Internationally available (e.g. D6603), Dual Sim (D6633, D6683), and branded (D6616). While the first group covery most internationally used frequency bands, the branded ones offer LTE support for T-Mobile and Verizon in the US. The disadvantage is that it is harder to develop for the latter.
Q: How do I seek support for a questions regarding xy?
A: If you have flashed something specific, ask in the thread you got the link from or where it originates. If you have more general questions, ask here or here. Note that many questions have already been asked, so please use the search function before asking a new question.
Q: I read up a little on various flashing related stuff and saw flashtool was mentioned. What is it? How do I get it to work?
A: Flashtool is a tool created by @Androxyde and it allows us to flash every file that we have in the .ftf format to our phones. While most of its steps are explained here, it is to note that if you use Windows 8 or higher, you may have to take an additional step to install the correct drivers for your phone. Look here for help on that.
Root
Q: What is root?
A: Root enables you to have more in depth access to your system. If you don't know what it is and want to aquire it, first inform yourself, for example here and find out what advantages it could give you as well as disadvantages and consider if it suits you. Never forget: Your warranty will be voided! While you can get it back, it might be quite some trouble if you're not somewhat experienced. On the other hand, people are always eager to help. If you don't try, you won't find out .
Q: How can I root my device?
A: There are two possible methods it root your device, one being way more risky than the other.
Method 1: Downgrade to 4.4.4 (if you are not already there), then use giefroot, get a recovery and flash a pre-rooted updated ROM. Sounds complicated? Thanks to @G-FACE it is not! Look here to see how to root and install recovery on your handset!
Method 2: Downgrade to 5.0.2 and use Kingroot. This method is not recommended at all as it sends your IMEI, so your unique identification number to a Chinese IP address without knowledge who the receiver is. While it is possible, I would definitely recommend the first method.
Q: Help! I messed up on the way there!
A: Ask in the appropriate thread (depending on in which step you messed up), there are always people helping out! Generally speaking, flashtool will be one of your biggest companions. If you have questions regarding that, look at the prior section.
Recovery
Q: What is a recovery?
A: A custom recovery is either TWRP, Philz or CWM (different versions), which allows you to install .zip files onto your phone on the go, without using your PC.
Q: How do I get it?
A: Please refer here.
Q: Which of the three (CWM, Philz, TWRP) is favourable to do xy?
A: To be honest, it depends. While most of the time you won't use CWM, it is up to you to use Philz or TWRP. Note however, that some Roms or wipes may require a specific one of the two. Always refer to the OP of your file source. If it states you should use a specific recovery, do so, as you may encounter problems if you do not.
Xposed
Q:What is Xposed? What can you do with it?
A:Xposed advanced framework is an awsome tool created by @rovo89 and helps you to easily mod your phone with tons of modules! For example you can blur your system UI, control which apps boot on start, or mod your phone to infinity. These are just few examples, I for my part use 13 xposed modules at the moment to get what I want from my device.
Q:Where do I get it?
A:Download it here if you're on LP or MM. Use the arm version, e.g. xposed-v79-sdk22-arm.zip
Now we have already learned the basics, so let's go a little further
Bootloader
Q:What is a bootloader?
A:
In literal terms, bootloader is code that is executed before any Operating System starts to run
Click to collapse
Refer here for further explanation.
Q:Why do I need to unlock it for a few Roms?
A:This is due to them using a different kernel, which would not work with a locked bootloader.
Q:I want Rom xy now, how do I unlock my bootloader??
A:Sony makes it a little easier than some other companies do, so have a look here. Note: Your warranty will be voided and you will lose your DRM keys!
Q:What are DRM keys? What is the TA partition?
A:As mentioned, unlocking your bootloader will wipe your DRM keys. These are unique keys generated by Sony to enable your access to some Sony-specific things. These include but are not limited to image capturing & viewing enhancements and access to PSN. The TA partition is the part of your phone where these keys along with your IMEI is stored. Before unlocking your bootloader you should backup your TA partition. How to do so? Have a look here.
Q:Help! I messed up/unlocked my bootloader without backing up my DRM keys.
A:I'm sorry to hear that. While you will not be able to get back your warranty, you can get back most of the functions. Look here for help.
Roms
Q:What are Roms?
A:To make it short: They are your OS, so your system that you're running on.
Q:What differences are there?
A:While we have many people use plain stock Roms, many here at xda favour modified Roms, be it to include Root or Xposed, or to go further by unlocking the bootloader (look prior topic) to flash Roms not based on stock, such as Cyanogenmod.
Q:How do I install Rom xy?
A:As long as you have it as a .zip file use your recovery, if its a .ftf file use flashtool.
Q:Where do I find (stock) Roms?
A:Luckily, there are collection threads for Roms here. Please refer here for pre-rooted stock Roms. If you want to reset your phone to its original state, use XperiFirm, it will help you download the .ftf for your phone!
Any further questions? Anything I missed? Please write it down below, I will add more Q&A's as we go
Feel free to link to this thread if one of these questions is repeated over and over in your thread!
It took me quite a while to organise this thing so please consider pressing "Thanks" if this post was helpful.
