DON'T make it water proof. Instead give it a proper heat dissipation system. It seems that so many breakthroughs happen in colleges, maybe your technology will be used (with royalty) by Samsung or Apple.
Make sure it has a mostly metal (aluminum works best) backplate. Then, this will act as a heatsink, which will dissipate heat faster than a plastic back.
The bezel/midframe should be injected TPU. TPU is durable, RF transparent, grippy and shock absorbing. It should protect the screen via a 1mm lip. Also, should the phone drop, the TPU should absorb the impact, not the chassis or screen.
Don't take ergonomics into consideration. It should be the shape of an iPhone. Just a (much bigger)box. You don't even need rounded corners. This doesn't have to look pretty, it has to be functional.
Put the buttons to the sides. It is way easier to press a power or volume button if it is to the side.
Dont use capacitive buttons. Use a Nav bar like the Nexus and X and G2. Those are highly customizable and can be remapped according to preference unlike capacitive buttons.
Use a 720p display. Those are much cheaper.
Lol I'll add more if I think of anything. I'm just listing the mistakes of current MFG's.

Question:
Where are you going to get an SoC?
It would be cool if you could get an S800, but I'm pretty sure you can't just pick them up like potatoes.
Are you going to build your own microchip? And modem/radio? For data and WiFi and Bluetooth and NFC?
Same with the camera. Where are you going to find a single module?
I guess you could theoretically cannibalize a device that has the parts you want, but... I dunno.
EDIT: Lol I just realized. You could get an OEM main board from a website and cannibalize that. Or even use it as is?

Thank you very much for your suggestions. We were planning on using an aluminum casing to keep it cool and prevent overheating but we plan on somehow implementing waterproof capabilities also. In the future we do plan on making our own chips but for now we're focusing on design and battery. We using donated android phones that we can take apart and build around it. Thank you specifically for the drop/impact consideration. Slipped our minds. For the screen I just thought about having it cave in so if it does fall flat on the screen in hopefully a flat surface it wouldn't cause cracks to form on the screen.

Oh a more serious note however, an AM/FM receiver as well as transmitter would be aweosme.

If you use a concave screen, you will lose precious space, something you can't afford to do with a homemade smartphone. You could try using silicon anode batteries, which will leave you a TON more space, but those dont last too many cycles and are still in the testing phase. Instead of not letting water get in, maybe you could spray the internals with a water replellant? That would make the circuitry hydrophobic and would still allow you to make the phone's case porous.

First off: receiving AM requires a Ferrite bar of some sort, something that can't be fitted into a smartphone.
Second:Transmitter? I think that would take up a lot of space and power.
But the OP said to bring it on, so...

Oh and if you end up using an Aluminum case, remember, you need to somehow make it RF transparent. You can't just make it like an iTouch because then you wouldn't get any cell signal.
I recommend using a polycarbonate chassis/frame to mount everything on, with an AL backplate glued or screwed onto the back and TPU injected into the sides via a sort of exoskeletal mold.
Then, just glue the glass onto the edges over the LCD/digitizer.

~ dule-booted out of the box with Linux and Android
~ dockable
~ long battery life
I've been doing research down the lines of new powering methods (batteries and charging) and work publicly on dule-boot methods so feel free to hit me up on that and I'm willing to help out however I can.
Edited 08122013- to add link. Note; the same tech for "painting" the image with a fast moving mirror is now being used for a new kind of "stedy-cam" ... Link to that to that now added ... I imagine that it might be possible to have the cammera and lasers co-habitate and use the same mirror. This would alow for an auto corect on the image being projected to run and ensure a good viewing experiance.
One more feture for the entertaiment side of things; Bluetooth out to another android, I'm working on an adaptive soround sound that works off GPS and pipeing out sound bassed off location... curently in the resurch side of R&D'ing that with my dule-boot setup.

i've always preferred practicality and functionality over aesthetics.
some of the things that i would like are:
1. dedicated camera shutter button.
2. dual boot out of the box.
3. hardware enclosure for the camera lens.
4. full size USB port.
5. i dont mind if the phone is a bit thick, but do provide a decent battery.
6. xenon flash for Gods sake.
7. A spectacular 2.1 speaker system, (my old chinese mobile had this, an actual woofer in a phone)
8. a screen not bigger than 4.7".
So my friends and i were talking about how the SGS4 has the barometer and all of those weather sensors and we were thinking that it was no use. What do yu guys think? Is this important to you? A barometer and temperature sensor seems useless to me as well. You can get this info from weather services. If you're inside, knowing the exact indoor temperature is not necessary for most situations.

2 5 6 7 I fully support.
1 could be replaced with a conveniently placed power or volume down button.
I don't understand 3. Does that mean the camera module and lens are independent of the rest of the phone?
4, it would probably be better to make a micro USB to full USB adapter. It would add a lot more space for a big battery.
8 would be nice! Unfortunately, unless OP is a magician, he won't be able to reach that. It's something to work toward, but I think it might be too hard for the first run.

I skimmed through most of what everyone has posted so far and I didn't see anyone else suggesting this yet, but if its been suggested I apologize.
Solar power charging capabilities.
For example fabricate a small solar panel that can fit behind the battery cover so that when you're driving/ working outside you can be using your device and it also can be charging without having to be connected to a power source. I Dont even know if that's possible but it would be cool.

If ya take a look at some of the ramblelings over here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1936855
(3 Cell battery mod)... that I've been having with another user you'll find some useful links on solar tech that's flexible, simi-transparent, and thin. There be other things such as graphien(sp?) super capacitors that are strong, conduct heat and electricity well, so well that in the future we may have devices that have a 5 to 10 minuet re-charge with tens of hours for discharge... I kinda keep an ear to the ground and an eye on the sky...
Edited to add some links
Next link points to a person that's video logging their steps to make graphene at home
http://www.google.com/url?q=http://...3EkkkQ&usg=AFQjCNFDlqglra1Lrj4-Xo5yzIZD8uSQvg
Next link points to one of many flexible solar options available. I think this would be nice on some kind of pull out that allows the user to expand the surface area on demand.
http://store.sundancesolar.com/powulflexthi.html
Next link points to transparent solar, which could be used for part of the device's screen
http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/...at-will-allow-your-smartphone-to-power-itself
Next link wraps it back up with graphene doing it all? Quite possibly... and if so then really all one would need is the correct build methods and resins to make a very hard to break, long lasting charge, persistently charging, and almost what ever shape wanted
http://dailyfusion.net/2013/05/tran...ode-makes-flexible-solar-cells-possible-9390/
There be more out there but using those as a start point will get anyone caught up on some of the sweet things happening down those lines.
Now on to another, so far, un-mentioned feature that would be amazing to have tossed in...

Is everyone else's power button on the ATT HOX feel like it's hard to push? Maybe not hard to push but it's such a low profile that I feel that I am having problems pushing it... Hard to explain. Just making sure there isn't something wrong with the phone that I have. Just took back a case to Best buy because the power button was soooo hard to push in it. Sometimes didn't register.
Thanks all
AJ
Not just you. I'm having a hard time getting used to it from my old Captivate. (Of course it's about 12 times better in every other category, so I'm not too upset!)
Oh I'm not upset.....I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy S2 and this phone is by far the best phone I've ever used so far but since every phone I've ever used has had a raised power button be it on the side or top, I was just worried that maybe I got a defect but I guess I didn't.
That's why I love this board. So friendly and polite. Thank you.
AJ
Hmm... Was your case the platinum holster one? That's what I'm using right now and It's kinda ridiculous how hard it is to press. It registers maybe 25% of the time I press it. I use my nail now though so it works every time almost.

Thanks all
AJ
Hehe, thought it might be the same one. I noticed the packaging to my case was actually opened when I bought it. Someone might have returned it Sunday morning xD.
Not really sure what other cases are available that fit correctly. I recommend not getting one on eBay. Most block the camera. There's a thread about cases and pouches in the accessories section.

I got a rocketfish gel/silicone semitransparent grey case at best buy for $25...it is light, fits snug and doesn't cover the speaker..covers the back well so that when you sit it down, the camera lens is in no danger of being scratched as the camera protrudes a little bit without case...I have same issue w power button but it's not hard to press...it's that it's so low profile that its hard to feel it...fantastic phone and battery is amazing...got 26 hrs out of first charge...got about 9 on my Vivid...but it was a 1600 mah battery where this one is 1800 or 1850, not sure though..and phone is about 1.5 ounces lighter..battery is better because it is embedded...you lose power anytime you 'plug" in a battery where the contacts are...this battery is directly on the board so there is no loss...same principle applies to hard wired appliances compared to those with plugs...coax cables with multiple splitters result in signal degradation on tvs...I think this is why HTC opted for embedded batteries as people complained about battery life...although my various iPhones in the past had poor battery life...but it is best to charge phone ONLY when battery is down to 10% or less...every time u charge, you lose approximately 30-45 seconds of total battery per charge so the less you charge the better...
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Seriously? Do you really think your great batterylife is due to it being "embedded"(which it really isnt) and not having contacts(still has a connector)? Really?
Do you really think you lose 30seconds off your battery life by charging it before it is run down?
Ponderous.
Really erroneous info guy. Not helping. Did you just decide to make things up?
Battery life is better because of improvements with hardware. It uses less juice. PERIOD.
Lithium ion is extremely tolerant of charging from any level. Should have no adverse effect if you charge at any time, full, empty or in between.

Was your 8088 hardwired to your A/C at home so it was more efficient? Programming != electrical engineering.
Yes there is a TINY bit of loss by using contacts. It's an easy check with an ohmmeter. But it really only applies to high current applications, which we are not dealing with here. And no, it's not enough to make any measurable difference. And your coax analogy is ridiculous. We aren't dealing with gain, SNR, taps, etc. Geez.
Going back on topic, I now get 95% registers with the power button. If you press on the far left of the button it works almost every time with the platinum case. I think it just needed to be broken in.

Well thinking of all the patent wars going on has me thinking of ways to improve and get away from the way functions work on other os.
As far as the pinch to zoom....I hate it as is, I rarely use two hands with my phone so pinching the screen isn't natural.
I think pressing the screen(.3? sec press) in the area you wish to zoom in/out and make a circular motion or gesture clockwise/counter clockwise.
Another would be the same slightly long press from say bottom left corner of display to top right corner to zoom in and then top right to bottom left to shrink. Wouldn't have to be corner to corner obviously as that would be too much zoom but that's the best I could explain.
What would you like to see
I agree with you on pinch thing.2 hands are no good on a phone...and i like your ideas...this is not new but I like the swiping gestures.

Here's my situation. I have an old laptop that, for a fun, little project, I am going to disassemble, upgrade and mold a case to make it a touch screen windows 8 tablet. The problem I have is that I cannot, for the life of me, find just one touch screen (either resistive or capacitive) overlay. Everything I find is a minimum order deal. I'm looking for something to fit the 15.6 display I already have.
Also I'm open to suggestions for any cool ideas while I make the tablet itself.

You might want to look into buying a touch screen, as opposed to a digitizer you'd put on top of an existing LCD. Windows 8 makes use of gestures coming in from the bezel, so ideally the touch-sensitive portion and the bezel would be flush.
Also, this should probably be posted in the section for desktops and laptops, and not here.

almost all of these work with USB some require you to solder and some you hook up through the port on the outside, Lifehacker had a post on the best route to go building a touchscreen pc, it was using a netbook, ill add that link later when i can find it
also i remember searching for touchscreens, they were rather easy to find, so either you were being lazy or your using a different internet, even now trying to find the sources that once used were rather easy to come by
the elotouch screens and the controlboards and screens from eeti work hand in hand, eeti even provides up to date software drivers etc for linux mac and pc

Looking at the specs you can narrow down the power usage and even find a DC powered monitor.
Hi
s4 some new smart feature in software and octa core processor in international version also has some smart cases & covers
to see notification maybe
or brief of some info
to work with S health & etc
http://reviews.cnet.com/2300-8900_7-10016135-5.html
Accessories showed up at the unpacked 2013
i don't really understand the smart cover, is it not just a normal cover with a slot cut out of it?
what's smart about it?
EDIT - just watched cnet explaining it. that is quite clever.
but surely the entire screen is switched on behind the cover??
also, in the videos the only way they are able to switch it to s view is by opening the case - doesn't that defeat the purpose?
not released yet but something to work with S-Health & etc
Thats a cool idea. When I first saw it I was like wtf?

maybe works by pressing the power button?
also is it magnetic like the iPad?
It appears to be magnetic but I don't understand how it displays the information without switching on the entire screen, in which case why not have a full screen of info.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 come with an AMOLED display which doesn't need additional backlight
that means that each pixels is emitting it's own light
and when the cover is on only the pixel that's displaying info is on
other pixels are told to be black so it's not using any power....
This means that it will not turn on the entire screen like LCDs and will have better black levels

Well, at least the flip covers and the S View covers will be the same price. I would've bet that the ones with the holes would cost more

right, but anyone who's used NoLED (can find it in the market) can tell you, its not simply about how much of the screen is used or not.. its the wakelock keeping the phone from entering a deep sleep that turns your 10 day standby into a 3 hour standby..
Samsung is clever tho, so I'm sure there's more to it than meets the eye. maybe its a solution to getting a notification and your pocket not bumping the screen keeping it on for an entire hour while you run...

Loving how many genuine accessories that will be avaliable from Samsung. Theyre really stepping it up with the variety.
Have a Xperia Z at the moment and there are 0.

Can't wait for S Bands either, it's a shame that the Jawbone Up things only worked for iOS.
Really interested in the smart cover, the way of working is amazing.
you can preorder the game pad now!!!

Interested in S band and smart cover too. Hope will not be very expensive, S band shouldn't be more than $80. Also hope it's compatible with other devices and brands in case someday I will buy another product too.

All the S band and S scales are an exact copy of the Fitbit accessories which have been around for years and Fitbit announced their band in January. Seems Samsung have finished copying Apple and chosen new targets?
I am not complaining about Samsung but Fitbit have the same products available now which work with ANY android, Ios or other phone why would I buy one that only works with one of Samsung phones?
GamePad seems awesome! It'll take a huge chunk out of potential nvidia project shield sales lol. Same or better processing power, more portable, can be used as a phone. Game pad is dead before its launch.

they ain't the same thing. led cover is always on as long as there are unattended notifications yet the edge screen is on only when the notification is triggered.
Plus, the edge screen is only readable from a limited angle and distance due to its size and position located on the device yet the led cover is more practical as long as it is faced up due to the icon and text size used on it for notifications.
anyways I would like to see such accessories for the most expensive samsung mobile phone ever released.

I totally know they aren't the same thing, but unless you even have the case at the right angle you wont be able to tell either... I feel like it would be redundant to have this, along with the edge, and the led notifications themselves. To much of nothing going on. Hey to each his own I guess. I dont see them making it for our phone, but who knows. Maybe someone else has the information to help you.
that is neat !
i need one to impress the chicks ! hahahaha
but it' not worth 99$ on ebay.

What does the cost of this phone have to do with accessories?

Considering the Edge is now the flagship of samsung considering the hw and the price any (subjectively) cool and compatible accessories should (preferably initially) released to the Edge, imo.
As for the "redundant notifications" statements; well then those who think in such way should never buy a smart watch neither coz their purpose is mainly replicating notifications to wrist.
I use the edge paired with a moto 360 and sony sbh52 and enjoy seeing the notifications everywhere.

I actually don't think the smart watch is redundant. You dont have to pull your phone out of your pocket everytime to see the time. They serve there purpose greatly and it is it's own separate entity that you actually dont have to have the phone for. Thats why I like it. I would like a smart watch actually but cant seem to cough up 300 for one. What does annoy me from time to time is all the notifications. I get the same ones on my tablet as my phone and they are both going off. Cant stand it. The led case to me is like wearing 2 smart watches with both of them doing the exact same thing side by side. One just may be displaying it using a different method. Like I said though to each his own. If you want an led cover then get one. If they ever make it.... Judging by the lack of support or accessories for this phone that is the only reason I say probably not.

Using double-negatives isn't helping your already-weak arguments for something that's incredibly low in demand. You're one of a very few people who want an LED cover, which is why it will likely never be produced. Your thinking is upside down if you believe the price of a device should dictate the extent of accessories available.
Well back on topic.....i really want this case for the edge

I agree stay on topic!! I often ask myself, Why do I need a 7" tab and a 5.6" phone? But heck, to each his own, needed or not. If there is a demand, then someone will make one. So keep asking, go to the manufactures website and ask there too. Get friends to ask also (Even if they don't have the phone) Who knows, they might send you a prototype free to test out and see what the reaction is.
I sent samsung an email about this, hopefully they getback to me

There is no way that will work with our phones the way it's showing... Not have out some sort of custom ROM/software. Save your money, even if it's only a few bucks.
I dont see any chips in the pictures on the inside of case. I kno the s-view cases are auppose to have a chip to activate the s-view, i assume its the same with these so check it out before you buy. I got a note 3 sview last year and it was same advertisement saying it would turn on sview but it didn't have the chip so i got the case free for false advertisement.

Just had a thought? Beside covering the edge screen, shouldn't Note 4 cases or backs fit the Edge?

Whether it works or not, but why not contact the seller for further info. instead of jumped into conclusion.
You can see from the pictures that the front of the case is just a bunch of holes. Some images imply that there is some sort of LED display, but you can see the rear facing camera hole through the holes in the front of the case.
Honestly, even if they make a LED flip case for our phones I'm not sure I'd get one, unless the magnet is stronger than the one for the current flip case. I've watched too many reviews on it and the flap just falls open too easy. I want something that'll stay shut when the phone is held upside-down. Furthermore, I'd like one that could hold 3 cards in it without it affecting how far the flap closes. Just my magical Christmasland wish though, probably won't happen.
