[Q] Wireless cover and camera grip at same time? - Nokia Lumia 1020

Simple question: Can the camera grip and wireless cover be used at the same time? Haven't been able to touch them in person yet but seems like it should be easy to answer.

wireless cover and camera grip
no you cant use the camera grip with the wireless charging cover on...
was just wondering why do you want to do that, as you will not be able to charge the phone while you are out of the house, unless you have the wireless charging power bank with you..

several reasons I asked:
Didn't want to mess with changing covers back and forth. The camera cover in particular is a pain in the neck to add/remove.
Wireless power in available in other places. Some cars even have plates in them now, as does the Lumia car dock.
Wanted the wireless cover to be "set and forget" coming from a 920, but it can't be if I need to take it off to use the camera grip.
I've since bought both and generally keep the (nasty feeling) wireless charging cover on it, only messing with the camera grip when travelling in general, living without it day to day.

I know what you mean, I have a 920 as well, but the charging cover for 1020 is sitting next to my charging plate as I hate covers and like the solid phone feel.
I read some where that some one was able to place the wireless charging coil inside lumia 925, most likely it should be possible on lumia 1020...
hope you can find a solution for your 1020.

Good case that works with wireless charging back?

Just got the Samsung wireless charging cover and it works great, however my beloved Spigen case no longer fits. Wondering if anyone has any good case recommendations that fit over the wireless charging back.
Thanks,

Most TPU based cases work well like cruzerlite or diztronic work well
Anyone have a link to a genuine seller of the TPU cases?

For tpu cases try Cruzerlite: http://www.cruzerlite.com/cases/samsung/galaxy-s-iv They come in a variety of styles and colors plus their TPU cases work with wireless charging backs. Hope this helps.
Still searching, cases don't fit or are extremely too tight and I'm afraid that it will hurt the phone longterm
Rocking the Roocase bumper which was a little tight but not insane and has finally adjusted, would like something high end while offering a little more protection
Does anyone know if the Spigen cases would work? They say TPU, so I'm wondering if they would fit?

I just received my wireless charging cover yesterday.
Ran into the same fit or in this case, not fit issue with my BodyGlove Nova cover. It appears that the wireless charging cover is 1 - 3 mm thicker than the original cover.
I called BodyGlove and they we rather adamant that they WOULD NOT EVER design a case for anything other than a device with the original cover. They will not design a case for a device with en extended battery or wireless cover.
I got on chat with Samsung and they indicated that the NFC cover is the same thickness as the original cover and that standard cases would work. Unfortunately, the NFC cover is not available in the US.
I got back on chat with Samsung and they indicated that the standard Case Plus (S 8878121) would work with the wireless cover. I went out to BestBuy and picked one of the Cover Plus'. Will report back how it works out.
I do think that I might be able to mill down the BodyGlove case internal surface enough so that it will fit the phone with the wireless charging cover. My neighbor has a precision mill that he uses for his home business. He makes specialize, custom parts (Plastic!) for the oil field industry. Will give that a chat and see how it works out.

The OEM Samsung cover will not work with charging back. There is already thread on this with many posts and pictures. etc. The Cruzerlite TPU cases works with my S4 and wireless charging back. 9 bucks at Amazon.
Save yourself some $$$ I have the OEM wireless back and this receiver pad. The receiver pad works very well and works with the normal back allowing for use with OEM cases.

If the Spigen Neo Hybrid is your thing, it fits with the wireless charging cover. It creates a slightly raised area on the back, but I actually prefer it. I wanted to get the aftermarket wireless receiver posted above, but there wasn't a consensus as to whether or not it was slower to charge. Although, so far it's taking the OEM base and cover around 3 1/2 hours from ~15% to fully charge the battery - that's not exactly great.

Do you know if this will work with the Samsung Wireless Charging Pad?
There is a big difference besides heat between the wireless receiver pads that fit inside the stock cover, versus the samsung wireless charging back.
From the three receivers I have tested all with varying heat levels and different issues with NFC is the charging behavior once it reaches 100%.
With the wireless back cover, once it reaches 100%, nothing happens. It stays off and keeps the charge at 100%. With the wireless receivers, once they reach 100%, the charging stops. Then a 2-5 minutes later, the phone turns on again as it reaches 99% and starts charging. This cycle continues on and on and from testing overnight most of the heat seems to be generated from this. Have to turn the volume down on the phone otherwise it is beeping everytime it recharges, 15-20 times an hour.
Not a lot of fun when using the wireless charging over night near the bed. Between the beeping and the screen turning on and lighting up the room anywhere from 2-4 hours after putting it down, it can start to drive you crazy. If you turn the volume down and have a full flip cover, then I guess that will allow you to sleep tight.
This does not happen with the samsung wireless charging back. The phone notifies you it is wireless charging when you place it on the pad the first time and that is it. When you wake up, it is at 100% and is cool to the touch every time.
I have tried 3 different recommended receivers from the other giant thread and besides dealing with positioning, heat, etc.. the biggest pain in the butt was this on/off on/off behavior. Total deal killer.
Cases that fit?
Forget the cruzerlite androidified. Total garbage. I tried it on stock cover and it was loose and flimsy, with the wireless charging cover it is still loose. The sides come off from the slightest touch. The cutouts for the buttons I think is what makes the case so weak and loose. The plastic along the cutouts catches on everything and is super flimsy.
I also tried the TUDIA slim melody and that actually fit nicely, much better than cruzerlite.
Ordered 2 other TPU type cases and will update with pics and vid of all of them hopefully early next week.

Wow, these are great points. I didn't think about the whole on/off thing. Crap.
Another question, what's the best wireless charging base? I'd prefer one that used a micro-USB for power as the Verizon pad does not.

Yeah I guess I am unusual in that I do not charge my phone by the bed or even in the bedroom. My lg charging pad is on my home office desk. I have noticed a little more heat from the receiver pad but nothing bad.
I also have the Samsung charging back which is great but it makes the phone too big and heavy. I use it if I am staying inside but replace the back if I am going out...or I used to until getting the receiver pad which allows a regular case.
I have the cruzerlite tpu case and it is fine for when I am using charging back. I also have the Roos bumper which works but I did not like the back being bare.
The easiest solution is the receiver pad which works with any Qi charging pad and allows for using regular cases all for $10. If you charge the phone by the bed at night, just plug in your USB charger. The value of wireless charging is when you are using the phone during day and do not want to plug in each time you lay the phone down or talk with a wire attached to your phone. My opinion.

This is a really good point. I noticed that my "excitement" of going with wireless charging was really more than what reality was. Is it really that inconvenient to plug the phone into a charger? No, it is not. The main thing would be when you are often using your phone such as during the day at work or at home. Using the phone with the cable plugged in is a hassle.
Honestly, I can go all day without charging my phone. I leave home around 6:30 am and the phone is anywhere from 50 to 25% when I go to bed around 10-11pm. Depends on how much I use it, and in reality, I don't use it too heavily. Weekends are a different monster where I have more time to play games or watch videos and often have to charge it. Having the wireless charging pad downstairs also is nice as I can put it on the table next to the sofa and watch TV while it is charging and pick it up when I want.
Is there a need to wireless charge at night? Absolutely not. If the 3rd party receiver allows you to use the cover you prefer (I prefer a S View type that is a case, not just a back cover) then having a charging pad around for convenience especially during the day is a good thing. No need to use wireless charging at night.
Have gave it some thought over the past day and now am considering a dock/speaker type stand that I used to have for my iphone. It was nice to use it as an alarm clock and listen to audio books while in bed. This will also effect my choice of case also, as the s view flip cover won't be ideal for that at all... oh well.
I can also confirm that the Neo-Hybrid Spigen case works with the Samsung wireless charging back.
However, if you are using the tetrax car mount solution with the Spigen Case.... you may want to take the case off prior to wireless charging as the magnet needed to hold up the phone to the mount will get EXTREMELY hot and not sure how that affected my wireless charging case ><;;;; however, it WILL still work even with that magnet bulge on if you really are too lazy to take it off... from what I can tell, not sure if that magnet really messed up my samsung wireless back... but the battery doesnt really charge if the screen is on... I will test again later.... I hate not having the screen on if the phone is charging ><
Then the question becomes why even get the wireless charging solution if you have to take the case off..... because I can =)
Update: Will be ordering a iOttie HLCRIO104 and fix the tetrax magnet to it that way I dont have to remove case every time for the magnet. Will respond with my fix

Cheap ebay magnetic charger cable isn't that great!

I bought a couple of these from ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151247910444?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
The USB plug end is huge, and the magnet is very weak. It's OK if you leave it flat on the desk, but picking the phone up means it's more than likely going to fall off.
I'd be wary of this kind if you're thinking of getting one.
I'd like one with a very strong magnet so that I can plug it into a USB battery pack and leave it in my pocket without wondering whether the magnet connector has fallen off.
Any suggestions?
I also bought such a cable. Mine is actually pretty good so far. Magnet power is good enough and the overall cable is just as good as a standard Sony cable. And only 3 euros incl. shipping.

I don't think you will have any luck finding one like that, as the connector was never designed to be used as a stand alone cable, it was always meant to be inside a charging stand/dock. Even if the magnet is very strong when pulling straight out from the connector (like being able to lift the phone with it) it will still come off super easy if pulled at an angle.
Maybe you could buy a cheap dock, then cut some in it so that all that is left will be like a clamp that goes around the edge of the phone and holds the cable steady? Or maybe some cheap case where you can glue tha connector to the case and only use it when charging?
Are they no official magnetic charger available? Isn't anyone here using?

I That's given me an idea, perhaps these cables with some Sugru so that it aligns to the edge of the handset might do the trick!

The only official magnetic charger is the DK32 charging dock. The cables that most people buy are the same cables that is inside the dock, but it's impossible to know whether they are original parts or just copies since Sony doesn't officially sell that cable as a separate unit. The ones that sellers claim to be originals could very well only be meant as replacement parts or a simple way for phone repair shops to charge the phones.
The magnet is weak and actually takes some effort to get it to align, I was hoping that it would suck itself in like a MagSafe connector does. It also charges at about 70% the speed of the original USB charging cable even when connected to the same ipad wallwart.
I'm unimpressed with my knock-off cable but for the price, I can accept the mediocre quality.

Well I paid 15 for mine (bought from a retailer) and they don't do refunds.
Lesson learnt...
What do you expect from such a small magnet? Imo it's quite strong already. I got this cable, which doesn't have a stronger magnet but aligns better, and it's cheap - I'm from Germany though: http://www.ebay.de/itm/-/291037184668
I also have the one the op has, with that one the phone started charging but it was so slow that it never finished. Modifiying the plastic and pins didn't help.
Not sure if it fits here, as my cable was not bought through ebay...
I got the OEM Magnetic Charging USB Cable for Sony Xperia Smartphone Black with Sony logo on the magnetic plug and it doesn't look too good: cheap to the looks and touch. The cable is thinner and feels flimsy compared to the USB charging cable that came stock with the phone. The magnet holds so-so but won't do too well when grabbing the phone, answering a call or whatever. The USB plug is huge, feels and looks cheap as well and can't be fully inserted into the charger; a bit of the metal part will stick out, that is.
I didn't do a full charge so far, so, can't commend on that part. I didn't measure the time but from what it felt like, the magnetic cable charges pretty fast - I'd say about the same rate as the stock micro USB cable (both with stock wall socket charger). But pay attention if you move the phone; the magnetic plug comes off really easy and might cause some bad surprise the next morning (the moment you wake up and notice your phone died on you and didn't wake you up ... about 2 hours ago, which was about an hour before you should've left to go to work and so on).
Now, if I'm not mistaken, witrigs says somewhere on their site that there would be huge difference between the Original OEM  cable and the cheaper 3rd party ones the also offer. Honestly, I can't imagine the really cheap ones are much worse (as far as look & feel and usability goes).
I bought two of the following a few weeks back (for work and home) and overall am quite happy. The magnet is reasonably strong - I can lift the phone to check an email etc without it falling off - not sure about a phone call with it attached though...

The magnetic ability is okay, not very strong but if you let the phone on your desk, it´s no problem.
I don´t know if a stronger magnet can damage the phone.
I placed a cable of this in my car-holder and fixed it with a little point of glue and there´s no problem with vibrations while driving.
And also good at this cable:
You can not reverse polarities!
I hope i could help you.

I did. But I am in Europe, so, it doesn't say anything about shipping within Asia.
However, for my order, delivery took about 2 weeks, which is pretty fast compared to most of my previous orders from China (usually 3 to 4 weeks without the customs interfering).

I may order a magnetic charging cable from witrigs along with a glass back replacement part so I'd get more out of the shipping fee and shipping time.
There are options for shipping via different countries with different shipping costs (at the bottom upon checkout)

Best wireless (Qi) back for N910?

There don't seem to be any OEM Qi backs left., which is what I wanted. I got an aftermarket one, which is as thin as the stock non-wireless back, but that 1) doesn't fit all that well; there's always a gap at one corner or other, depending on which end I start with when putting it on, and 2) is at least moderately durable.
The one I have is starting to split, 3 months in. It charges fine (800mA at 5VDC, which is better than my Note 3 with OEM charging back)
So... if you are using a wireless charging back, which one are you using, and how do you like it?
BTW, I've been using a number of these wireless charging docks ($10 on amazon) and they're great if you want a spot you can just plonk your phone down and have it charging.
Hello, I'm using this on my phone and it fits and works perfectly.

I use it with this charger. I read a lot of reviews that the wireless charging is very slow and someone even said it was more like a toy... For me, the wireless charger easily charges my phone as fast as a 1 amp charger. You do have to have a minimum of a 1 amp wall adapter.
https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Cha...90870&sr=1-11&keywords=wireless++fast+charger
EDIT: I forgot to mention, I use a rubberized case with my phone, so it is rather thick and have no issues using the charger with it.
I think the charger and back that bishop mentioned are fine. I used similar, but I actually stripped the charging circuit out of the back, removed the black plastic cover and put it into a standard (genuine) Samsung back, which I know fits perfectly. In fact, I bought 2 of these backs and stripped out the charging circuit in both. I put one in a standard back and another in a Samsung S-View cover because the Charging S-View cover from Samsung is no longer available. Now I have the choice of either S-View charging or standard back. charging for when I use the VR headset. BTW, looking at the circuit for the backs I used, it looks like NFC is in there as well.
I bought two different Qi receivers (and used the original back), and I regret it. The first one died after a month or two, and the second one heated up the phone while charging and ruined the battery.
So I broke down and bought Samsung's wireless charging back, and it has been working perfectly.
where i can find original oem samsung back QI ?

I also use this back, (sold under the h-ber brand name on amazon) and it works fine. Of course the back does fit a little tight, and sometimes, you have to put it on the bottom (near USB port) first, or the clips don't clip.
I have phone in a incipio case which is two layer TPU and polycarbonate and pretty thick, but it charges fine.

I have used a samsung fast charging qi dock, and a pleson fast charging dock, which both work fine, but will only charge at normal qi speeds due to lack of qi fast charge support on the note 4.
I get the original one for $60 in my country

What are you doing to hold those stripped pieces in place? Is it just packed so tight that you don't need anything or did you attach it somehow?

I just put the circuit panel onto the phone in the right position and then glue on the cover and then fitted the cover without moving the circuit panel. Press down well and the charging receiver is now glued to the case and in the correct position.

Thx a bunch for your prompt response. Sorry, what kinda glue is this? I know it gets hot back there and I've never been this best at choosing proper adhesive materials. I'm specifically using this setup for a contraption I found for the gear. I purchased a built in back but don't trust it's quality. Here is the gear contraption. It will be my 4th fan setup but this time, wifi charging is a possibility:

I used double sided tape when I did mine - not quite as permanent as glue, just in case it moved before the glue set.

Best car mount for Note 9

MOD EDIT: LINK REMOVED
Per the forum rules, posing affiliate links is not allowed on XDA.
The best in my opinion is the Schosche Magnetic Mount (the small sticky version). It really sticks, and is convenient. But on the down side, you can't use the wireless charging with it.
here's a link:
I planned on using the cd mount that I had with the note 8 on the 9 but after it popped free 3 times in a row driving down the road I just ordered a mount from proclipusa.com. That worked out so well I ordered another for my other vehicle. No point in taking any chances with this phone.
These guys have a couple of different options but for me this is the best one for any phone.

You can stick this thing on practically any surface.

Hi Guys,
I'm trying to decide which car mount would be the best for this device.
What car mount do you use? would you recommend it?

Depending on where you put your metal at you can still use wireless charging. I have a magnetic mount on my car and two pieces of metal slapped on the bottom of the case. Holds both upright and sideways just fine. Wireless charges as well.

would you mind showing us how you placed it and what kind of metal plate you have? cause mine is a bit too wide so it covers mostly the entire back of the device so wireless charging wont work.
I've got the iottie one touch 3. Holds the phone firmly and it's easy to put in and take out as well.

You can't get better than Brodit. I think they're sending me one to review, so I'll post a video once I've done it. For now, here's one for another phone.

Brodit is Proclips on this side of the pond. I agree it is one of the best I have ever used. I do wish the note 9 holder came with the clip for the charging cable like the one in your video.
I'm using a Proclip mount with an iOttie easy one touch 4 head and it works fantastic.

I need to move it down, and use 2 of the smaller one. Since I wanted it to also hang sideways I used two plates to have more force to hold the phone in place. I looked at the video of where the wireless charging pad is on the phone so there is some wiggle room.

thanks, i actually found this https://bit.ly/2CZ4xiZ i can see that the metal plates are quite thin and can be put on the closer to the side of the case. so hopefully this would work.
My only problem with this is it's not fast wireless charging.

Keep in mind (main reason why I didn't look at wireless charging for the car) if you have android auto and other things running the wireless charging couldn't keep up on the charging. That is why I just plug in if I am going on a longer trip and short trips just quickly mount it. This phone has done amazing on battery life.

get the iottie wireless fast charger car mount.
I've had this mount for a few years now, even bought a new one when I bought a new car. Simple, easy to use, it works well, and it's only $9.

This is a good one; It's almost identical to the Schosche, but it's cheaper and comes via Amazon. The one I use is just the one that comes from Walmart. But yeah, I've ordered one of these also.
For those with the magnetic car mount. Does the magnet not effect the s pen anymore? I remember seeing the old notes loose sensitivity or touch with the s pen when a magnetic case or mount.

Not that I've noticed, I do notice my screen comes on for an off screen note sometimes when I put my phone on the magnet a little to the left.

Very cheap foldable wireless charger.

Got this charger for £12.99 on Amazon:

Feels cheap and looks cheap but it works and does the job well enough. It's foldable too, so you can use it either horizontal or vertical.
Worth it, if you need to buy a cheap one to leave at the office.
Would be great if wireless charger can work even with a metal piece on the back of casing for magnetic car phone holder

There are magnetic holders that claim to work without blocking the wireless charger. They use a metal piece shaped like an upside down "U" instead of a square one. Given all the warnings against mixing credit cards and metal on cases and what not with wireless charging, I'd be weary of trying it out myself on my own phone, but they do exist. Just search for wireless charging compatible magnetic mount, I'm sure some will turn out.
Could be that I'm missing something (perhaps even a crucial factor), but why couldn't you use a wireless charger at the same time you have a metal plate in your case? It can't be harmful to the phone right?
I have a strong enough carkit so I can use a relatively small circular piece of metal in my slim fit case for the Note 9, works a charm. I've tested the location in the case, so I can use this in my car and still be able to put it down on a wireless charger so it charges without a problem. Okay, so when I put my phone on the charger pad a bit to far down or up, it doesn't charge, but that's just a matter of trying which position is best and this will become a non-issue the more you use it (since you know exactly how to put it on the charging pad).
Please enlighten me whether or not it could be harmful in any way to the phone because I don't want to risk a $1250 phone for the convenience of charging wirelessly. But I haven't ran into trouble this way just yet. Been doing this also with my Galaxy S8 for over a year btw, it still works like new.
Btw, @OP, can you share a link to the charger?

I put a link to charger on the video description.
I just bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C5KCQQ4/
Fast charges a little slower than directly plugging the Samsung charger into the phone (as expected).
The hinge is a tight friction fit, so the angle is adjusted wherever you like.
