[FYI] SIM Unlock HTC One X Evita - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

For folks interested in getting their HTC One X Evita sim unlocked so that it works with any GSM carriers I'd like to share my experience since I could not find any relevant info our forums:
First you will need a sim card from a different carrier.
Request your sim unlock code from your carrier or as an alternative you can go to Ebay (this vendor fonecare was great, cheap and super fast, got my code within minutes for less than $5 but there are many others). In both cases you will of course need to provide your IMEI number (*#06#)
Here is the BIG ONE: You need to be on a stock rom! All attempts to sim unlock on a custom rom (cm, aokp, etc..) will result in a message telling you the "sim unlock attempt was unsuccessful". After 5 unsuccessful attempts you will "permanently" lock your phone (Well not so permanently as you can reset the counter by running an RUU, but it's PITA...) If you're indeed on a custom rom (if you're not I don't really know what you're doing on xda?!) read the following:
Make an nandroid backup of your current setup with your recovery of choice.
Push a "stock rom" to your SD card, I used the latest 3.18 since AT&T is my network here but you can also refer to @redpoint73 exhaustive index for a list of all the stock rooted roms available for the Evita here
You may or may not have to flash a radio depending of whether your "stock rom" of choice comes with it or not. If needed go to @taylor.fowler thread on radio here, pick the matching radio and push it to your SD card
Reboot in Recovery
Wipe cache & Dalvik and Factory Reset.
Flash the "stock rom" you moved to your SD card (as well as the radio if needed.)
Wipe cache&dalvik again (don't really know if it's necessary, i think the jury is still out on this matter but it doesn't hurt)
Reboot to your "stock rom" to make sure everything is fine and dandy
Power off
Remove your current network sim card and replace it with another carrier sim card (this will trigger sim unlock prompt once you're rebooted)
Turn your device on
You should be prompted for sim unlock (not to be confused with sim pin which some carriers require before you get to the sim unlock prompt)
Enter your sim unlock code and hit "ok", should be followed by a "sim unlock request successful" et voilà
Reboot in recovery, again wipe cache&dalvik, factory reset and restore your nandroid backup. Amen

This is very useful information for me. Thanks for sharing!

Now if someone could post the way to SIM unlock for free...

Requesting from your carrier should be free.
There is a method for the one s with s-off that involves decoding the unlock code from the phones mmc files. May work with one xl. I havent seen anyone try yet. I would but I don't have a micro SIM from another carrier.

Haha, assuming you're still with Telus, as am I, you know that that's wishful thinking, unfortunately.
I have yet to unlock my bootloader because I don't wan't to lose my warranty just yet, so I can't really test anything anytime soon. If you have any old regular SIMs from another carrier, maybe you could cut one down to micro and test it? :fingers-crossed:
On a separate note, even though I haven't unlocked/rooted anything, my phone does show ***TAMPERED*** at the bootloader, so maybe it's too late for my warranty anyway.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean any offense, I just meant that there are many guides, and you should pick whichever you prefer best.
I've had success using a procedure similar to this guide:

Thank you so much for this guide. I had tried to unlock my phone on AOKP 3 times and was beginning to panic. This worked perfectly!

I was able to just tell ATT I was travelling out of the country and they gave me my code for free.
Also, you don't need to be on a stock rom to sim unlock, but you do have to be on a sense-based rom. I was able to unlock no prob on ViperXL.

Thanks for sharing the useful information here!

Just a thought, but is this going to be a similar process to the One S (method here), except using p11 instead of p6?

i thou it is illegal to sim unlock your phones after Jan, where do you guys buy the codes from.

Anyone know if a used SIM card will work to unlock?

Now when you say stock...does that mean just sense 4+ or any version of sense (sense 5, for instance)?

[MOD][22/09/11] -Yet another sim unlocking method

Here we go with yet another unlock solution.
This one applies to almost (if not all) devices which are radio S-off, it’s fairly easy to use and doesn’t wipe data/settings nor have that ugly side effect (when using diag files) in which you lose conectivity to mobile network.
Supported devices so far:
HTC Sensation (pyramid)
HTC Evo 3D (shooter)
HTC EVO 3D GSM (shooteru)
HTC myTouch Slide 4G
Click to collapse
(by the use of revolutionary)
and:
Sprint EVO 4G
Droid Incredible (HTC Incredible)
HTC Desire CDMA (HTC BravoC)
Click to collapse
(by the use of unrevoked 3 – not tested)
These are the required steps you have to take:
1. S-off your phone by using Revolutionary (if you haven’t already done that).
2. Fill in the form with the required data. This will generate an unique Config.dat file for your device. Please enter a valid email address, as you’ll be sent there the link to download the file.
This step you'll have to take here
3. Put the file on the root of your sdcard and reboot your phone into HBOOT (adb reboot oem-42). Once you’re there, navigate to Simlock and press Power. The phone will load the file and remove the simlock. Some text will appear on the screen and at a certain point you’ll be asked to press Vol-Up to restart the phone.
4. Just do it, and you’ll be done!
PLEASE NOTE!:
This solution is heavily linked to the device it's being applied to by the use of IMEI, which can be considered a breach in security.
DISCLAIMER:
This solution provided for you on this site is given AS IS and in GOOD FAITH and is based on the research I made. I may not accept any liability or responsibility for the use of this applicaton.
If you still want your device unlocked but not by the use of this method, see this thread!
If you find this tool useful and appreciate my work, Paypal me a beer, it helps development a lot..

thanks this is great can't wait for it to work without s-off
For s-on we need smartcrd.io, which I haven't figured out yet.

I have to agree. This seems very sketchy. I would think twice before sending my IMEI to someone random over the internet. The other two ways to unlock do just fine.

yeah but the rest of them also nuke all your data. :/
Bona Fides
I agree with all of you of being skeptic about this (I would, also).
However, the method is heavily linked to the phone and imei is required. I'm providing all this IN GOOD FAITH and with the hope that I just freed another device from corporate interests.
There are, of course, a lot of other methods of unlock you can use, no heartbreak
So does this mean my phone is unlocked now:
fat32 init ok
reading config.dat
read mccmnc file success
open CID file fail
get device IMEI success
IMEI checking...PASS!
preocess done, reboot device?
Yes, if your phone is s-off. Try another sim card and post back the result!
PS: By the way, we don't have any success story so far, please post back if everything went ok.

Today it was found that the HTC Rezound was able to be unlock from the HTC developer website.
I tried it and it worked great.

I agree with green. Besides, they could (I haven't read that this happens, but I could see it happen) report you phones s/n to Verizon and void your warranty.
Sent from my HTC ThunderBolt powered by KillaSense 3.6
That is the biggest reason I would not use their unlocker. At the very least HTC knows your phone is unlocked, there had to be some agreement with vzw in order for them to unlock it in the first place. I would assume it was a notification of serial numbers after they have done it. Save big red lots of cash with all of the warranty claims they could deny....
the revolutionary method also requires you to give up your serial number

Tor not giving it to a company affiliated with Verizon though. Revolutionary isn't going to report you to Verizon, thus voiding your warranty even if its a hardware issue.

I wasn't insinuating that, just no real reason they (Revolutionary) should even ask for it, I know its used to create the beta key but why the phone serial and not just an email address? just pointing out that both methods currently require giving out the serial of your device.
I still plan to use the Revolutionary method once they update it to work with the new 2.11.605.9 rom. (yes I am aware of the work around, but prefer to just wait)

+1 I've always wondered the same. I read something that they ask so that they have information if Revolutionary starts causing problems with a certain build run. Personally, I'd be a lot happier not to have to divulge the info.

You got it all wrong. The HTCDev site will only unlock the bootloader, allowing you to flash things like custom recoveries. It will definitely not unlock the phone from the carrier.
Also, the Thunderbolt will never work on a gsm network because its a cdma phone.

[Q] Sim unlock not working on rooted phone -- [Solved]

My situation: I rooted my ATT One X using 2.20 xfactor exploit that changed my phone's CID. I am now running the King Kang ROM. I got my sim unlock code directly from ATT but it keeps giving a failure message. I read another similar thread on this topic but that was from a few months ago and was not resolved.
My question: does the rooting/bootloader unlocking process affect the ability to sim unlock my phone? If yes, then can I restore the phone back to factory settings including the original CID, etc. so that I can try to use that sim unlock code again? Will re-locking the bootloader and flashing a 2.20 RUU suffice?
Thanks,
Sathya
It shouldn't. I can't see any connection between the two. SIM is for service, bootloader is for the phone.
I had this problem.
You have to be on a Sense ROM (doesn't have to be stock) in order to SIM unlock the the HOX.
Backup your current setup, wipe and flash any Sense ROM and then try to unlock. Works like a charm.
Once you're unlocked, you can go back to restoring or flashing AOSP-based ROMs

[Q] Why are Sim Locked for some carriers but unlocked for others

Hello,
I have an HTC Sensation 4g that was originally from Tmobile. I rooted it and also unlocked the phone to use on other networks. I verified this by using other prepaid carriers in the U.S and also in Mexico. But now i have an issue I tried a company called Moviestar in Mexico. I keep getting a message saying SIM LOCKED. Why is this?
Also does anyone know how asking for unlock code work from tmobile. I also have service with them with a different sensation can I call them and give them the IMIE for the sensation I want unlocked? Not sure if you have to be using the sensation while asking for the code.
I also found this to change APN but dont the sim cards change this automatically?

Simply ask T-Mobile for the unlock code. They will give it to you. I haven't asked for this device yet but asked for my other device and they gave me the code without any problems. Just tell them you will be traveling and want the code. It shouldn't be a problem. They did it for me before without any issues. Hope this is helpful. Best wishes

No, you're missing 1 step.
S-Off and Sim Unlock are two different things.
But if you have S-Off and Root access you can figure out your own Sim Unlock code quickly and easily.
See here for instructions...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1232107
Then once you have that unlock code, when you put in a sim from another carrier it will prompt you for the code and you simply type it in.
Skipjacks is right I was trying to find that thread wasnt fast enough lol. Cedyathome follow that guide and it should work for most carriers.

It always puzzles me why do people on custom ROMs want to get OTAs?
AT&T JB isn't rolling out yet. When it does, it will get posted in Development in a TWRP-flashable rooted form.
I also doubt the OTA will feature much (if anything) that is not already present in the JB Sense ROMs already up in Development, plus all of AT&T's bloatware crap and other meddling. Possibly including a new hboot that will mess up even more stuff this time.
