[Q] Sim unlock not working on rooted phone -- [Solved] - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

My situation: I rooted my ATT One X using 2.20 xfactor exploit that changed my phone's CID. I am now running the King Kang ROM. I got my sim unlock code directly from ATT but it keeps giving a failure message. I read another similar thread on this topic but that was from a few months ago and was not resolved.
My question: does the rooting/bootloader unlocking process affect the ability to sim unlock my phone? If yes, then can I restore the phone back to factory settings including the original CID, etc. so that I can try to use that sim unlock code again? Will re-locking the bootloader and flashing a 2.20 RUU suffice?
Thanks,
Sathya

It shouldn't. I can't see any connection between the two. SIM is for service, bootloader is for the phone.

I had this problem.
You have to be on a Sense ROM (doesn't have to be stock) in order to SIM unlock the the HOX.
Backup your current setup, wipe and flash any Sense ROM and then try to unlock. Works like a charm.
Once you're unlocked, you can go back to restoring or flashing AOSP-based ROMs

That worked! Thanks a lot!
I flashed to CleanROM 5.0, sim unlock worked like a breeze once I put in a non-ATT sim. Flashed back to King Kang.

i'm on htc one x with ATT, trying to unlock it to use with tmobile.
bought code from cellunlocker.net
went from CM10 to cleanROM 5.0....unsuccessful.
the imei number i provided to cellunlocker.net is the same as in phone settings and when you do *#06#.......
BUT...i noticed the imei in phone setting does not match the imei on physical sticker on phone or the sim insert plate...wtf is it different. i got the phone directly from ATT!
already email cellunlocker.net for unlock code for the IMEI on physical sticker/sim plate.
any suggestions...or other ways of sim unlock.
Thanks

Had a unlock issue when I first got the phone. Was running king kang couldn't unlock so I flashed back to stock with a locked bootloader and it worked.

Lockrf bootloader and went back to 2.20 ruu...still didn't work... Suggestions??. Should i go to 1.85!!???

You have an imei issue based on what you explained. Get at&t to unlock the phone for you or provide you a phone with matching numbers.

Well .. the dumb thing is i called att...the imei they have matches with the one inside the phone... And they claim they didn't have an unlock code for it...called twice...both rep tried to look up unlock code for me.
Maybe i shld try to get unlock code for the imei number on outside of phone...on phone sticker, box, sim tray...????
Why the heck are the two imei numbers different??? Should i go to att to complain n get diff one... although it has been about a yr...doubt they'll do anything about it.

Is root required to unlock bootloader

I follow all root how to but fail due to permission denied error.
People say you can unlock bootloader without being rooted.
But all unlocking how to, state that phone must be rooted.
I have XL, 1.88.
Can anyone confirm that I can unlock bootloader without being root initially?
You have to be rooted. Sorry.

Not entirely true. You need to be rooted on AT&T, since BL unlock is not officially offered for us and we need to change the SuperCID.
Not sure if this is the case with SingTel. Most carriers are allowed to unlock their BL officially. If HTC offers the bootloader unlock for that carrier CID, you do not need root. And root is easily achieved after BL unlock (just install a custom recovery and flash SU).

Sorry. Unfamiliar with other carriers. Plus, I never saw the One X in the list on the dev site at all. Has it changed? Or, are you saying that some carriers don't lock the bootloader at all? I wonder why AT&T even cares about locking it down.
If your phone is NOT on AT&T, you can unlock the bootloader with HTCDev.com
That means you do NOT i repeat NOT need root.
Just choose "All other supported phones" in the list of phones.

To everyone else: The singtel phone has the tegra 3 chip, not ours

I lol'd at this. No offense taken. Actually, you are quite correct. I've been unhappy in general with AT&T, but not much of a choice is available. Glad we had that break-up of Ma Bell so long ago because of deregulation. Sounds like we need that again.

Are you sure? It is listed as a HTC One XL with LTE coverage and their firmware works on everyones S4 phones.
Where is your info coming from that the phone isnt a S4??
To add facts:
Singtel previously offers both: HTC one X and HTC one XL (LTE).
Now, I think Singtel only offers One XL.
Singtel 4G Network Just about 3 months old.
BTW, I successfully Unlock Bootloader and gain root upon Rom Flashed.
I encountered no trouble at all. And did the following:
. follow HTCdev literally
. flash TWRP recovery image using fast boot flash command
. flash custom rom zip file thru TWRP
=) +1 rooted HOXL

Imei shouldn't have changed unless you changed it.. cid is what changes.

Will I have my gsm relocked if I flash a 2.20 RUU (today i`m on 1.85)?
I`m from Brasil, so I can`t get the OTA update from AT&T.
Thanks in advance.
If your phone was imei unlocked, then updating won't change a thing. And your imei cannot change: you can spoof it, but it never changes permanently.

[Q] Purchased SIM Unlock Code does not work

Hey guys. I purchased a SIM Unlock code from an ebay seller. After verifying the IMEI and the code itself, the code failed, twice. I told the seller, got a refund. I then purchased from a second seller but he gave me the same code. So, I know the code is correct. However, the unlock does not work.
I am on a custom rom (CM10). Could be possibly have any effect on this? This is the first time I've had an unlock code not work and it's puzzling.
Thanks in advance!
As said one million times over again you MUST be on a sense ROM to unlock

[Q] Sim Carrier Unlock

Hey guys I recently purchased an Rooted Htc One X from a friend to use as my work phone and was give the carrier unlock code for my device however when i went to unlock the device it did not work. From searching around here on the forums i've noticed that in order to carrier unlock this device it needs to be on a sense based rom. Is this correct? If so does it matter if its viper xl rom?

Any sense rom should work. You just need it for the first time code entry. You can flash AOSP after if you like.
Ok perfect i just wanted to make sure before i attempt to unlock the phone again...Once again Exad you've come to the rescue! Thanks again!

[FYI] SIM Unlock HTC One X Evita

For folks interested in getting their HTC One X Evita sim unlocked so that it works with any GSM carriers I'd like to share my experience since I could not find any relevant info our forums:
First you will need a sim card from a different carrier.
Request your sim unlock code from your carrier or as an alternative you can go to Ebay (this vendor fonecare was great, cheap and super fast, got my code within minutes for less than $5 but there are many others). In both cases you will of course need to provide your IMEI number (*#06#)
Here is the BIG ONE: You need to be on a stock rom! All attempts to sim unlock on a custom rom (cm, aokp, etc..) will result in a message telling you the "sim unlock attempt was unsuccessful". After 5 unsuccessful attempts you will "permanently" lock your phone (Well not so permanently as you can reset the counter by running an RUU, but it's PITA...) If you're indeed on a custom rom (if you're not I don't really know what you're doing on xda?!) read the following:
Make an nandroid backup of your current setup with your recovery of choice.
Push a "stock rom" to your SD card, I used the latest 3.18 since AT&T is my network here but you can also refer to @redpoint73 exhaustive index for a list of all the stock rooted roms available for the Evita here
You may or may not have to flash a radio depending of whether your "stock rom" of choice comes with it or not. If needed go to @taylor.fowler thread on radio here, pick the matching radio and push it to your SD card
Reboot in Recovery
Wipe cache & Dalvik and Factory Reset.
Flash the "stock rom" you moved to your SD card (as well as the radio if needed.)
Wipe cache&dalvik again (don't really know if it's necessary, i think the jury is still out on this matter but it doesn't hurt)
Reboot to your "stock rom" to make sure everything is fine and dandy
Power off
Remove your current network sim card and replace it with another carrier sim card (this will trigger sim unlock prompt once you're rebooted)
Turn your device on
You should be prompted for sim unlock (not to be confused with sim pin which some carriers require before you get to the sim unlock prompt)
Enter your sim unlock code and hit "ok", should be followed by a "sim unlock request successful" et voilĂ
Reboot in recovery, again wipe cache&dalvik, factory reset and restore your nandroid backup. Amen
This is very useful information for me. Thanks for sharing!
Now if someone could post the way to SIM unlock for free...
Requesting from your carrier should be free.
There is a method for the one s with s-off that involves decoding the unlock code from the phones mmc files. May work with one xl. I havent seen anyone try yet. I would but I don't have a micro SIM from another carrier.

Haha, assuming you're still with Telus, as am I, you know that that's wishful thinking, unfortunately.
I have yet to unlock my bootloader because I don't wan't to lose my warranty just yet, so I can't really test anything anytime soon. If you have any old regular SIMs from another carrier, maybe you could cut one down to micro and test it? :fingers-crossed:
On a separate note, even though I haven't unlocked/rooted anything, my phone does show ***TAMPERED*** at the bootloader, so maybe it's too late for my warranty anyway.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean any offense, I just meant that there are many guides, and you should pick whichever you prefer best.
I've had success using a procedure similar to this guide:

Thank you so much for this guide. I had tried to unlock my phone on AOKP 3 times and was beginning to panic. This worked perfectly!
I was able to just tell ATT I was travelling out of the country and they gave me my code for free.
Also, you don't need to be on a stock rom to sim unlock, but you do have to be on a sense-based rom. I was able to unlock no prob on ViperXL.
Thanks for sharing the useful information here!
Just a thought, but is this going to be a similar process to the One S (method here), except using p11 instead of p6?

Now when you say stock...does that mean just sense 4+ or any version of sense (sense 5, for instance)?
