People say the S600 is slow... I say ya right - Galaxy S 4 General

Like the title says, this SOC is actually pretty damn fast especially the Adreno 320. Here are some benchmarks. 2.05ghz CPU and 627mhz GPU. Running CM 10.2 and Chronic-Kernel 2.0

I'm not comparing it to the Exynos or anything else its just to show What the S600 is really capable of. And yes some people complained about the S600 was not that fast compared to other chips

I don't wanna start war or something, but for me the Snapdragon version is just better. Lots of custom roms, improved connectivity and more battery efficient than my friends i9500. Performance of S600 is still enough to play best games for next year, and UI? smooth as oiled ass.

I have to be honest the launcher, software feels slower on the S4 compared to the HTC One (i had the One before)i think Samsung should optimise software it would get better.

According to what we saw about the benchmark performance of the gt i9500 you can say that it has the same performance with some under the hood temporarily overclocking .. but to be honest i thought every manufacturer did this with pretty much every high end phone ... since it seems that the community is taken by surprise with the lastest new about the gt i9500 i tend to believe that this may not be the case after all

No not at all. The only thing that happens is that the processor is just put on performance governor where all cores are just clocked at 1.89ghz. Over clocking is something completely different. The exynos variant has its GPU over clocked to 533mhz for certain benchmarks. In normal use and gaming it will never go over 480mhz

Thanks !

Actually the spec is 533, it NEVER overclock, but underclock to 480. You can't call something overclock when it is within spec

This is a completely different story and you're totally right. Samsung and every OEM from this point should focus more on the software optimizations and not just gimmicks. What they (Sammy) proved with the S4 is that no matter the "engine" insight, when you put a firmware of 1.6 Giga loaded with crap...you deliver a crappy experience. This is why a ditched touchwiz roms for 4.3 GE ones (completely different story...and so i made jealous an iphone fanboy friend ).
On the topic, whats the point with this OC benchmark? Does it feel better in everyday experience or its just for fun?

In a way its overclocked because that clock speed will never be used in everyday usage unless you benchmark your phone all the time. But the S600 runs always at 450mhz and 1.9. benchmarks don't change those values to lets say 2ghz CPU or 487mhz GPU

Faux kernel onky allows 450 MHz on the gpu. Which kernel are you using to get higher clocks ?

With Perseus Kernel, you can set the gpu speed up to 640 Mhz, the A15 cpu up to 2 Ghz and the A7 cpu up to 1500 Mhz.
You can also undervolt each step for the cpu's and gpu.

Im getting more than 6hours everyday screen on time. Is it not enough?
Heat issue? thats normal but it doesnt come to the point that its overheating and its very minimal
Rom available? There are stock based roms available out there and now cm and aosp progress is faster than you know
Which is better? it depends on the user, they are both s4, you dont buy a phone to flash rom every day or every week. you get it because you need it for calling, texting, emails, browsing, music etc.

Why overclock??

Hi people. Im new to forums in general so try to use small words lol.
Can someone explain whats the reason behind overclocking a phone?? Ive underclocked my galaxy s down to 800mhz to save battery and you only notice when i have a few apps running which i never do anyway. Im not dissing anyone who does, id just like to know.
If theres a guide covering it ive missed please post it and ill read up

Speed increase.
It is useful for applications the require more grunt.
If you want to understand it use psx4droid to play a game at 1.2GHz then at 800MHz

I like everything to be snappy on my phone. Overclocking my desire from 1ghz to 1.25 makes it cruise!
I think the SGS is fast enough and you can play all the games available without lags. So overclocking is just for fun, but in normal use you don't see any difference.
how fast do you want your phone?
I overclock to 1.3ghz on my epic 4g when I use emulators and when I am not far from a charger but other than that I generally scale down to 800mhz

I have a feeling most phone overclockers are getting a placebo effect.
If you were to hand them a phone and tell them it was 800mhz, they'd feel like it was slower than if you handed the same phone (unchanged) and tell them it was 1.2ghz.
Mobile phone companies configure thier devices for maximum age. However overclockers push limits beyond stock. With right procedures, you get upto 50% speed boost resulting stunning output. Just your cell phone will die early :/. But not that soon. I am using DHD. Overclocked to 1.53ghz ( stock 1024mhz ). Rest, you can reckon.

How come some phones get high quadrant scores?

Hey
I overclocked my Galaxy S and I did some tests in quadrant to see if my clock gave me lower performance.. Anyways I got 2950 as my best score @ 1.5 GHz but I see some HD2's getting 4400 in socre @ 1.5 GHz. I thougt my Galaxy S would get a better score then a HD2. Is it becouse the HD2 running a slimmer rom with less background processes or are they just lying?
I believe quadrant scores are heavily varying and dependent on the device, and for the most part, do very little to reflect "real" performance.
I don't have a straight answer, but I wouldn't worry about it too much. Your scores are still magnitude's higher than my Hero, my absolute highest (with unsafe tweaks to the clock and kernel) was about roughly 500

Overclocking is just ramping up the processor in your CPU to higher frequencies for faster performance. There are limits, you can't go too high because you risk damage and overheating, and going too low can cause severe slowdowns and instability.
BUt finding a sweet spot for the minimum and maximum processor speed can result in a much faster phone when the screen is on and a way better battery life with the screen off.

Ah...Good old days!
Anyways, there are many many ways to cheat quadrant.Running the app from a ramdisk, patching SQlite, running a rom from SD(I think) all boost the scores. That is,however, because Quadrant relies heavily on I/O,which gives unreal scores.Remove I/O benchmarking from the test and you have a helluva accurate benchmark.Pretty good too.
But on the SGS,let me make my guess. Are you running Cognition rom?If yes,are you using interactive governor?Again,if yes, switch to performance governor and yay,4000+ points in Quadrant!

Cannot agree more. It sure is fun showing around your quadrant score but a quadrant score never reflects true real world performance. Maybe, Neocore would be a better benchmark but then again non of these benchmarks would show how fast apps could load or how smooth you switch between apps.
I use an LG GT540 Optimus. I was able to reach 64.3fps on neocore and 1250 on quadrant after overclocking to some 800MHz with performance controller.
Quadrant also doesn't reflect the core memory/cpu usage. ie Sense UI eats more resources than vanilla. So, same phone running vanilla and sense will have different scores.
I believe Samsung uses TouchWiz. Perhaps, you could score better with a vanilla rom or cyanogenmod.
Last but not the least, Quadrant scores could be faked just as easy as you could fake version numbers in About Phone.

The Infuse has an updated Hummingbird (S5PV210)- Basically the P1000's first-gen Hummingbird (S5PC110) was never tested to reach 1.2 GHz but many likely can. Just like our processor was never meant to run at 1.6 but many people can.
That was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.

Stock voltage on my Infuse says 1275.
I will say this.... I have a captivate, vibrant and galaxy S...... And neither could really handle being over clocked.... Could go to 1.2ghz on each of them but it would suck so much battery id have to revert back.... And forget about 1.3ghz or higher..... Phones would overheat, reboot, crash and just be very unstable..... As I would expect it to be the same with your G Tab.
Now my Infuse I have been running at 1.6ghz for months and its completely stable for me..... With good battery life still...

I just kept the stock voltage and stepped up the clock speed, but I did see what you saw at 1.3ghz, I get a instant lockup unless I overvolt which I don't want to do. What we are seeing is differences in the silicon being used. Some hummingbirds just can't take being prodded with a stick

[Q] GPU Overclock? Is it possible...

Is it possible to overclock the Adreno 225 GPU, I play mostly N64oid and FPSE on my phone. Its for FPSE mostly because of the Open GL plugin might see some increase by overclocking the GPU. Also dose any one know what its running at currently, i'm not really sure if overclocking the CPU also overclocks the GPU if they are synchronized or something.
Any other emulator users out there that love using their phone for game play?

Yea.....I was just wondering if we had a kernel that had it OCed yet....that is what I meant by possible...with some chips the CPU and GPU need to be scaled the same to work correctly. So if the stock CPU speed is set so is the STOCK GPU speed......I think...do we even have a kernel OCing the CPU for the VGSIII?
Not sure if your trolling or what but Desktop GPU and Phone GPU are two different beasts. Not many people really even care to check what GPU is on a phone and how is stacks up against other phone GPUs. For example the Mali 400 in the Galaxy S II in the US makes the Galaxy S III GPU look like an old Voodoo card next to a GTX 480.....just saying we got ripped on the GPU hardware upgrade for the US iteration of the Galaxy S series. Its actually a downgrade and it blows now that I don't have sprint(because their network is trash).
Currently Verizon does not have a GPU in a phone with 4G that can match the Mali 400. I don't want to wait until the Galaxy Note 2 comes to Verizon...seeing as it has the same hardware as the international version of the Galaxy S III just with a bigger screen. However if a OCed GPU does not get me the performance I am looking for then I will be jumping to the GN2 as soon as it comes out.
The OP of the kernel thread you decide to look at should say whether the GPU is OC'd or not. For example, both TW kernels Trinity and Leankernel have the GPU OC'd to 480 mhz. If you're asking can we users manually OC the GPU, then I can't help you with that.

The real question is why not? LOL. Honestly though I just like finding new things to do with my phone and coming from a locked Galaxy S4 I have to say I'm enjoying the amount of things I can do with this device that I couldn't on the S4. The extra 600MHz was because I was hoping it would drop any chances of lag with my favorite apps & Xposed which always seems to cause a delay or two for me. On the other hand I like squeezing what I can out of it. Same with my Desktop too, get maximum stable over clock and stick with it. ;D. If there's some downsides such as life shortage feel free to mention it though because I'd rather know early on than when it's too late. Sorta the point of this thread

Well with normal use it gets like 40-55 C (CPU) and during an Antutu benchmark just at the beginning it hit 75C sooo not very happy with that.... especially considering that's in the highs for a lot of desktop processors, can't even imagine how bad that must be for a phone processor LOL. It was @2.803 MHz with voltage of "1130" & ondemand governor. Not so sure as to what "1130" is based on though as I'm new to mobile over clocking, guess I'll figure it out tomorrow!
Edit: Forgot to include that just a few minutes ago I flashed a new kernel due to some random lag, old one never hit above 50 even on tests (with intelliactive). Also using ondemand/interactive now. Gonna re check the differences on those two governors tomorrow and decide which one I wanna go with! : D
