[Q] GPU Overclock? Is it possible... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Is it possible to overclock the Adreno 225 GPU, I play mostly N64oid and FPSE on my phone. Its for FPSE mostly because of the Open GL plugin might see some increase by overclocking the GPU. Also dose any one know what its running at currently, i'm not really sure if overclocking the CPU also overclocks the GPU if they are synchronized or something.
Any other emulator users out there that love using their phone for game play?

Yea.....I was just wondering if we had a kernel that had it OCed yet....that is what I meant by possible...with some chips the CPU and GPU need to be scaled the same to work correctly. So if the stock CPU speed is set so is the STOCK GPU speed......I think...do we even have a kernel OCing the CPU for the VGSIII?
Not sure if your trolling or what but Desktop GPU and Phone GPU are two different beasts. Not many people really even care to check what GPU is on a phone and how is stacks up against other phone GPUs. For example the Mali 400 in the Galaxy S II in the US makes the Galaxy S III GPU look like an old Voodoo card next to a GTX 480.....just saying we got ripped on the GPU hardware upgrade for the US iteration of the Galaxy S series. Its actually a downgrade and it blows now that I don't have sprint(because their network is trash).
Currently Verizon does not have a GPU in a phone with 4G that can match the Mali 400. I don't want to wait until the Galaxy Note 2 comes to Verizon...seeing as it has the same hardware as the international version of the Galaxy S III just with a bigger screen. However if a OCed GPU does not get me the performance I am looking for then I will be jumping to the GN2 as soon as it comes out.

The OP of the kernel thread you decide to look at should say whether the GPU is OC'd or not. For example, both TW kernels Trinity and Leankernel have the GPU OC'd to 480 mhz. If you're asking can we users manually OC the GPU, then I can't help you with that.

No problem, Leankernel is only available on Rootzwiki whereas Trinity is available on both sites.

GPU Overclocking

I'm that this has been brought up before but could someone tell me how overclocking the GPU is done? It seems to me that the CPU is the most stable and is fine at 1200 MHz and going any higher is just a battery killer. But the GPU seems like it's severely underclocked. (or at the very least could do with some OCing )
Are there any apps that support it on the Charge or some tutorials that can show me where I can experiment with some numbers. I know my bro's Galaxy Nexus kernel has GPU overclocking built into it.
Feel free to give me bad news but if there is any hope i'm up to some leg work and phone sacrificing. lol.
It requires kernel support. PBJ overclocks the GPU some, but it isn't customizable. Beyond that, there isn't a way on the Charge.

GPU OCing from a UI isn't possible on this device-AFAIK its only possible on the GSII (maybe the nexus). The PBJ kernel OCs it a bit, but imnuts wants to ensure stability vs raw speed.

Yeah. You just have to make the modifications to the kernel and recompile the it yourself. However, when I did it, it actually ran better at around 400 or 450.

Could you pm how to do it
I haven't been able to successfully build the current version of the kernel, so I can't really help at the moment.

[Q] Overclocking SGX540

Anyone tried this? I've come across a video for the galaxy s ii overclocking the same gpu. After looking into, it seems that this gpu has been used in many different platforms at different clock speeds. i dont have the "know how" to overclock a gpu, but would it be as simple as changing the system values?

So far the only way to overclock the GPU is by overclocking the FSB, which will also overclock the CPU. Some kernels have it cooked in (Trinity for example), some offer a way to do it (Live OC enabled kernels) and some have an hybrid (Marmite has GPU overclock for 1.1GHz but not for 1.2GHz).
I'll check those out

what is the FSB??

Front side bus. The frequency of the CPU is determined by a multiplier X FSB.
CPU runs at 1000MHz. FSB is at 200MHz. GPU is on a 1:1 ratio with the FSB, thus runs at 200MHz
Every megahertz added to the FSB will make the CPU run 5MHz faster.
210MHz FSB x 5 = 1050MHz and 210MHz GPU
Marmite kernel has a 1096MHz step for CPU that comes with a GPU oc @ 220mhz

Does this apply to all SOCs or just the one n the nexus s?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium HD app
Marmite is only for the nexus s, and I believe every soc is its own unique methods and limits of oc

What is up with our beloved sgx540?

Hi people!
As the title says. Why am I getting low scores and performance these days using Jelly Beans (both 4.1 and 4.2). The only cure is Trinity kernel. Let's dig in deeper. The Galaxy Nexus has a sgx540 aswell. It scores around 2600 depends on the device's mood. Other phones with the same gpu too. Without Trinity I score around 1600. When I install Trinity kernel "the problem" disappears. So what did Morfic do and could the other developers do it too? Or is it just me?Do you guys experience it too? I'm running Helly Bean Jan 5th version with it's pre installed kernel. Waiting for reply!
Cheers, Zunex

I do know that question was different. What does trinity has what others don't. I achieved a score of 2300 in Antutu myself. So there is got to be something.

oc bus speed also gpu too as far as i good remember. not only oc cpu thats the difference.

This is the Trinity Nexus S/4G kernel for Jelly Bean with 1440MHz CPU And 240MHz GPU clock for ANY Rom (Uses rom's ramdisk).. Tuned colors. optimizations, leaner build.

That's what I was thinking of too but Bedalus has gpu oc'd kernel too. And +1000 pts with +40mhz OC? There's gotta be something else. But thanks for the answer.

People say the S600 is slow... I say ya right

Like the title says, this SOC is actually pretty damn fast especially the Adreno 320. Here are some benchmarks. 2.05ghz CPU and 627mhz GPU. Running CM 10.2 and Chronic-Kernel 2.0
Your... 'putachen' must be very long now. ^^
No one said it was slow there is just a faster chip out there.

I'm not comparing it to the Exynos or anything else its just to show What the S600 is really capable of. And yes some people complained about the S600 was not that fast compared to other chips

I hate you hahaha. Didn't know what it meant and google searched it...
I don't wanna start war or something, but for me the Snapdragon version is just better. Lots of custom roms, improved connectivity and more battery efficient than my friends i9500. Performance of S600 is still enough to play best games for next year, and UI? smooth as oiled ass.
I have to be honest the launcher, software feels slower on the S4 compared to the HTC One (i had the One before)i think Samsung should optimise software it would get better.

According to what we saw about the benchmark performance of the gt i9500 you can say that it has the same performance with some under the hood temporarily overclocking .. but to be honest i thought every manufacturer did this with pretty much every high end phone ... since it seems that the community is taken by surprise with the lastest new about the gt i9500 i tend to believe that this may not be the case after all

No not at all. The only thing that happens is that the processor is just put on performance governor where all cores are just clocked at 1.89ghz. Over clocking is something completely different. The exynos variant has its GPU over clocked to 533mhz for certain benchmarks. In normal use and gaming it will never go over 480mhz

Hello
Which Rom exactly do you use please ? you said cyanogenmod 10.2 (it's a 4.3 android version) then you said used the 1.2 version of the Chronic-kernel (it's for the 4.2.2 , no ?!) so i don't understand how can it works together ?
Thanks !

Actually the spec is 533, it NEVER overclock, but underclock to 480. You can't call something overclock when it is within spec

This is a completely different story and you're totally right. Samsung and every OEM from this point should focus more on the software optimizations and not just gimmicks. What they (Sammy) proved with the S4 is that no matter the "engine" insight, when you put a firmware of 1.6 Giga loaded with crap...you deliver a crappy experience. This is why a ditched touchwiz roms for 4.3 GE ones (completely different story...and so i made jealous an iphone fanboy friend ).
On the topic, whats the point with this OC benchmark? Does it feel better in everyday experience or its just for fun?
Running Kuban's rom and faux kernel i get 12347 on quadrant

In a way its overclocked because that clock speed will never be used in everyday usage unless you benchmark your phone all the time. But the S600 runs always at 450mhz and 1.9. benchmarks don't change those values to lets say 2ghz CPU or 487mhz GPU
Faux kernel onky allows 450 MHz on the gpu. Which kernel are you using to get higher clocks ?

With Perseus Kernel, you can set the gpu speed up to 640 Mhz, the A15 cpu up to 2 Ghz and the A7 cpu up to 1500 Mhz.
You can also undervolt each step for the cpu's and gpu.

I9505 users saying bat life in i9505 is better?
Im getting more than 6hours everyday screen on time. Is it not enough?
Heat issue? thats normal but it doesnt come to the point that its overheating and its very minimal
Rom available? There are stock based roms available out there and now cm and aosp progress is faster than you know
Which is better? it depends on the user, they are both s4, you dont buy a phone to flash rom every day or every week. you get it because you need it for calling, texting, emails, browsing, music etc.
