My wife's phone got water damaged a few days ago and I took it apart and removed as much water as possible and put it in a bowl of rice to set.
I finally tried turning it on today and it seems to work fine (I think, syncs etc.) except that the screen does not power on. I can see the backlights when I look at it from an angle so it appears to receive power of some kind.
I took it apart further to see if I could see anything and I found that on the display cable there is a black area which looks like it is damaged/burnt on the cable. There was also a little bit of black on the connector but I believe I got most of that cleaned off, but the area on the cable does not seem to be able to be cleaned.
I don't really know anything about electronics or parts of a phone and was wondering if anyone that did could suggest what my next steps would be to restore the phone/screen to operational condition? Part replacement etc.
Thank you.
It sounds like the chip connected to that cable got fried, hence the burnt spots.

If that's the case I'm assuming there isn't much I can do? I don't want to solder anything but could can replace anything that just snaps in.
Thanks.

Bump for last ditch effort to get some opinions before giving up.
Hey,
Its been a while, but i dropped my infuse from a pressbox and it fell many feet to the concrete ground :/ The screen glass itself isn't cracked but the underpart of it is (LCD itself most likely). Im not getting any screen interaction or visibility at all....It is rooted and running a custom ROM but i can't remember which. I would love to get as many files off of it as possible. It still works for sure though. I can hear it get some notifications and the backlit bottom keys light up and still respond. My hope is that someone has a good suggestion for me.
Ive got two possible ideas at the moment:
A) Somehow blindly use CWM and get it to mount USB storage to get some of the files off of it.
B) Buy one on craigslist and replace the motherboard. (Sounds reasonable....I've already taken it apart before so it shouldn't be hard.....but don't know if it would work...)
So......
A) Do y'all think either ideas would work?
B) Can you guys show me some shots of the CWM mounting usb process and i could see if i could do it blindly?
Thanks y'all
The same thing happened to me. I went the craigslist method. Replaced the motherboard and it worked like a charm!

I have searched for similar issues, nothing posted. My phone went swimming with me the other day, DOH!
I have thoroughly dried the unit in rice/dehydration powder (works REALLY well by the way). Unit is completely dry, boots up, recognizes sdcard, radios work etc.
Unfortunately the touch screen doesn't work. I have read that the unit may simply need to be recalibrated. I have carefully disassembled the unit cleaned and checked all leads etc. The unit again reboots, everything works but touch screen.
I am thinking about odin new image to see if it recalibrates screen solves problem, any thoughts advice etc?
Might have to replace the lcd

A friend if mine experienced the same problem. And now none of the speakers work nor does Bluetooth. Phone is also going in to safe mode quite often. Is it fixable? I've repaired plenty of iPhones, and did remove the back to try to disconnect and reconnect the flex cables to see if that would work but to no avail.

Did you trip the water sensor? I had a similar issue, did not trip the sensor though. I tried some of the recal methods, not sure off the top of my head but i think you have to hold your finger for a certain amount of time in one of the corner, I am sure someone will know how to do it.
However what I ended up needing to do since the re-cal didnt work. I bought a usb otg adapter to connect a mouse to my phone, followed the steps to return it to stock, odin, unroot, triangle away etc, and sent it back to verizon for a replacement with no problems at all.
Same issue:
Phone was soaking in my gym bag because one of my water bottles leaked. It was in there for a good 10 minutes. I took it out. Dried it and put it in rice asap. 24 hours later I take it out and it boots fine, can connect to my computer move files everything. However, the touch screen will not work. Any tips for self repair? Will leaving it in rice longer fix my issue?
I probably know the answer to this but is there any way to return to stock while not having use of USB data?

I think there's probably a small crowd of people that are looking for this ability. I've not heard of a solution to go back once you lose USB.

I know of one but our device isn't supported but it's too use mobile Odin , I think I'm just gonna fix the port via replacing it but I don't have all the tools to do so, I need a small tip for my soldering iron

Cheap fix
I may be the only one that gets this lucky, but I was having a lot of trouble with my usb port being seen by computer. It got to the point that I had to get the phone ad cable just right to charge. I decided last night I had to do something or replace phone. I powered down phone and squirted lighter fluid in the usb port, then took a toothpick and piece of rag and cleaned best I could. Phone is working great now. All of my cables are charging and being seen by computer.
I was at point of replacing phone anyway,so don't try if your not prepared for failure, but good luck and let me know if you have success with this.

And so it happens.
I hooked up my phone and made a file transfer and then...usb stopped functioning.
I tried a whole bunch of stuff, thinking it was just the pc or the driver recognition..but no go. Even after pc wipe and reinstall OS and drivers. No luck.
The sad part is that I was on a rooted 2.3.6 but after a wipe, the stock sammy recovery replaced the cwm recovery.
No usb means no return.
I did try to use alcohol, wiped and scrubbed. I even opened the phone and try a few cleanings. Even disassembled
No luck.

If you don't want to spend $100+ on a Weller micro-solder setup or on the "professionals" take a look at this item... might fit the bill for the project.
http://www.amazon.com/Coopertools-S...78319450&sr=1-3&keywords=micro+soldering+iron
btw... what's that discoloration on the main circuit board shield? it almost looks like some kind of chemical corrosion took place .... just sayin'
Please keep us informed on how it goes. The naphtha which is a stronger cleaner than alcohol worked for a little while, but I'm starting to have a few cables not read again

Ya know..come to think of it, I think that resembles water and chlorine dried up on a metallic surface of PCB board doesn't it? I'm still trying to figure out how that happened.
@deathblade:
I had on old solder iron I bought from Big Lots years ago for about $4-$5.
I filed the point down using a whetstone. You can use a file or just the rough surface like cement, brick, clay or just the bottom of a ceramic plate.
The one Zen suggested looks good.
Here is another inexpensive source:
http://www.harborfreight.com/30-watt-lightweight-soldering-iron-69060.html
Just take your time.
If you never done it before, open an old electronic part and practice.
I'm not an expert at this. I feel comfortable in sacrifice my phone for parts but I don't like the idea of messing up someone else's phone.
It's better if someone else messes up their phone though.
I did buy 10 of the usbs charging port. If it works and you guys need one, hit me up, I mail you one at cost and stamp. (~$1.70ea + stamp)

The, I understand where your coming from I do have some experience with soldering but not as much as I'd like I to however have plenty experience with replacing non soldered hardware, and do to past events I don't have any old devices to practice on, I might take you up on that offer for the part, though I wouldn't know how much the stamp would be, as I never mailed anything before, you wouldn't happen to also have any spare power buttons would you? Lol my Cappy's doesn't work, tried to reset the solder as I've heard that might help but instead it turned everything displayed on the screen blue for a while <<<weird lol

yeah. I recalled that. but you need that board and the riff box and others. not feasible for one infuse unless you are planning a side line business of jtagging infuses.
for the cost of that setup, you could buy 2 working infuses or a later phone model

I had severed the 7 pins with an exacto blade.
de-soldered the points
cleaned up the points
socketed in the new port
seems to fit
soldered in the new port.
slightly sloppy but seated well
re-assembled.
no reading or charge
I think it's due to poor new pin/old pin contacts.
prolly could have used better equipments or techniques
I left the new port in place and prolly will just send it to the mobiletech guys
i have 9 brand new ports available.
Just an update guys...
I soldered the new port on. My first attempt. Kinda sloppy actually. I wasn't able to clean off the old materials very well as I had concern about over heating the board. I think having the correct materials, solders, flux, magnifiers, and heat shield cloth and such may help. My attempt did not work. I suspect I was not able to get the 7pins to touch or connect properly.
I sent mine to mobiletechvideo without the port.
It's about 10 days turn around. It came back working. I was not expecting it to boot up and was ready to flash it back to stock myself but it came back with the leaked GB KK4 firmware installed. Kinda odd I guess as most of the return to stock on XDA were either UCKE3, UCKJ4 or UCLB3.
Although when I have the Infuse on the data cord at an angle that stress the connection, the computer reports the device as unknown. I suspect it is not as good as factory ship but good enough for me to restore the phone to function.
I'll have to keep an eye on the connection for now.
Conclusion: it can be done..but better success if you have the proper equipment for micro welding.
Glad to hear it's working

A couple of days ago my phone started not responding properly I have been using viper 3.1.2 since it first came out I am s-off with updated firmware and radio with 4-ext. It doesn't appear to happen when in recovery but happens randomly mostly on the left side of the screen sometimes just one or two touches but quite often there is five or six touches on the screen. I have tried the foil trick and discharging the battery and charging trick and even downgrading firmware and radio and installing a different Rom and nothing seems to fix it. Does anyone have any ideas or do I just need to get my digitizer replaced. It is just wired that it doesn't happen in recovery just in the Rom. Thanks in advance for any help.

Either that, or try changing the phone. There's probably dust underneath. If digitizer is expensive, try pulling it out, give it a personal service like dusting and vacuuming(make sure you dont vacuum some of the easily loose part out. I did that with a small portable vacuum, works like a charm.
OK thanks I will try that

So I can try to clean the surface between the digitizer and the lcd panel before getting a new one ????
I already try "the FIX" but it fix nothing on my phone, so I decided to buy a new one from ebay, not the original but the one of XE edition, I hope that the constructor made it better than the original one ...
