Samsung Galaxy Note 8 [CASE MOD] - Larger S Pen Holder - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Accessories

Ok, so this is a really simple modification, but it turned out to work really well and deserves a post.
I recently started using the Poetic Slimliine Case for my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 tablet and really like it. Thin, light, Sleep/Wake function, and good protection. The only thing it is missing in my opinion is an elastic holder for a larger S Pen. I realize the Note 8 already has an smaller S Pen inside the tablet body, but the larger versions you can purchase from Samsung or Wacom are better for taking notes as they are the size / weight of a normal pen, and the back works an an eraser tool for most applications that work with the SPen (S Note, Papyrus, etc). Here is the one I purchased. It works really well, much more accurate that the crappy types of stylus you can get for other tablets, accurate and feels very close to pen / paper.

To fix this issue, I commissioned my wife to help with her sewing skills. Purchased a roll of 1.5in wide black elastic from Hobby Lobby, and had her sew some loops on the top of two bands.
I was going to glue the bands to the inside of the case, but found it wasn't necessary. The friction grip that occurs once the tablet is snapped into case is plenty strong enough to keep them in and from moving around.
Here we have it installed. It keeps the Pen securely in place, and is very easy to access. Also doesn't get in the way when holding the tablet in any orientation.
Here is a shot from the back. It is flexible enough to easily plug into the headphone jack. Doesn't hinder anything on the device.
Overall, this little $2 upgrade has made this case perfect for me now. Very happy with how it turned out.

That's a pretty slick idea. I just got the Note 8 and SOMEHOW haven't seen this pen in the year I've had my Note II. Time for an amazon order.

Great idea, I'm going to see if this works on the Samsung Book Cover. Was wondering how I could keep my Bamboo handy.

Thanks for this, great idea. I'm going to buy the Wacom Bamboo stylus for my Note and will do something similar to keep it close to hand. I've got an official Samsung case, but think that shouldn't make too much of a difference.

Incipio Fixie Universal Tablet Stand
Many of the cases we found that do double duty as tablet stands only offer one or two resting angles and aren’t always stable enough to hold up to tapping or on-screen typing. The Fixie from Incipio is versatile, sturdy, and really clever, which makes it a favorite. The stand is made up of two pieces that fit together in four different ways for four different viewing angles. Rubber grips are there to keep the tablet steady and the aluminum material used keeps it light while remaining strong. When not in use, the two halves are compact enough to slip in even a small bag without taking up too much space.

Very cool! Just got my pen and all I had were 1/2" strips, still works great. Thanks for the idea!

is that the genuine spen for the note 10.1?
link to pen here
and you have no problems with accuracy? because if so I need one

Are there any cases that...

I have not seen one, but there are a couple of apps on Google Play that are supposed to help you with this if you just use any cover that covers the proximity sensor.
One of them is called CaseSensor, I have not tried this one myself and based on the reviews it may not work that well...
This one does not; however, here is my review on the case I bought. LOVE it.
Ok, my case just arrived. In a word, amazing.
Quality - Outstanding.
Fit - Perfect. Tablet is in there snug. Zero wiggle or shift.
Protection - As good as it gets.
Looks - Expensive.
Feel - Back is soft felt - very comfortable to hold. Inner sleeve small enough to still easily thumb type.
Convenience - Portrait and landscape with REMOVABLE INTERIOR..
Pen Access - Comes with own pen holder designed for the s-pen.
I mean, I am hard on cases and return them in a second if don't like them. I'm keeping this. I love it. I am truly amazed they can produce a case of this quality for $17.95.
I'd take some pictures myself but it looks just like this.

I had that one for 10 minutes . Returned it . That velcro releases too easy , and then when you want to put it together it takes 2 tries to adjust camera cutout . You have to stylus in the holder on the side and not in it's original place like intended . When it's in original place you can't pul it out . After i returned this one I ordered this one http://www.amazon.com/Acase-Samsung...409002&sr=8-10&keywords=galaxy+note+10.1+case

There's an opening in the case for the pen so you can keep it in the original place, it's just too small. You can pull it out, it's just not very easy to do. I'm getting better at it though. I would like a bigger opening like the one on the case you linked to.
Anyway, I thought I read that when the pen is not inside the tablet slot, the Note executes pen detection code. If you store the pen outside the tablet, wouldn't that drain your battery? There's even an option (in settings) to turn off pen detection when it's inside the tablet slot.

I think it would only place a small drain on the battery if the pen was close enough to be registering and then you would get the hovering icon which you don't get until the pen is quite close to the screen.

Broken S-pen

If anybody has an S-pen that has broken, please PM me. I am trying to make my own and need the circuit card to make it work.
I make pens and pencils out of wood on my lathe and want to try my hand at a S-Pen stylus. I have been unable to find any pens that look decent and thought this might be a good solution.
Alternately, if anyone knows of a source for the circuit boards (both pen and eraser) please let me know. If I can put together a workable kit for these I might consider selling a few.

You might want to check out this rather lengthy thread on styluses. There are some desings/ideas for pen holders that dont destroy the original spen. I would not advise taking a spen apart. However if you are a king with wood working and can produce objects that are accurate to a fraction of a millimeter then go ahead. The board has to fit correctly and support the tip. The tip of the pen with the coil seems very fragile to me. I would advise making a holder around the spen shell instead of designing a new pen from ground up.
I made a simple printable spen holder which can be found here, you should be able to make it from wood too.
Here are the photos and dimensions of the circuit board.

Thanks for the help. I'll take a look at your references. As I stated earlier, I already have an older pen with a broken tube. I have dismanteled it and made some measurements. Being a much older mode,l for a tablet computer, it appears to be a little larger than the current models. I have been able to come up with a tube to support the internal circuit card. It fits nicely. The only issue I have is the tip. Since it can't be metal, it will take a little more work. I think I have all of the deminsions worked out and have tested the functionality on the mock-up. Now I need to get to the lathe and see what I can do.
I like your idea of "printing" a pen. Based on all of the deminsions needed that seems like a great way to get the design you want. I wish I had access to a printer. We have one at work but I'm not sure I can get access to it for such a project.

Great job with the PDF, thanks!! The newer design does look a bit different than the older one I have. It appears that the width of the coil/tip is slightly larger than the circuit card giving it a tapered look. The overall design lends itself to a mulit-peice pen design, which works well with the wood pen construction methods.
The S-Pen I have also has an eraser. The eraser is a seperate circuit card. This piece fits nicely either on the opposite end of the pen or in the cap pending on the style of pen.
I don't really like the 'pen-holder' concept as I am looking for something with a more classical look. A one piece sleek design. I'll try to put something together this week with some pictures.

So, here is my first attempt at making a me S-Pen. Not ideal, but I'm still working out the details. I decided to forgo the button on this one but hope to have it on the final version. This one turned into more of a Stylus-holder rather than a pen. It's a little longer than I intended but I like the size and feel of it. It's really esy to write with.
I made this one from an old Tablet PC Stylus with a broken barrel. He advantage is it has an eraser and seems to be accurate as far as position goes.

I really like the design of your pen, looks nice and classical. Not something I can manufacture with my tools.
I personally like my design, because I store my pens in my tablets and have the holders in my bag. It's a simple design which works, for me simple is "beautiful". My initial design actually covered the whole pen, but I figured that it's just a waste of material. Even worse it scratched the spen quite a bit, because I take it out of the holder a lot. For me the button is crucial, because I use it to switch to the eraser in lecturenotes. I'm interested in how you are going to incorporate it in your design.

Since mine has an eraser built in I don't use the button much. The tablet pen I found was missing the button and I didn't want too make one for this Pen. Now That l I have built one l Know what changes to make for the next.

RooCASE Origami review

The good fellows at rooCASE have sent me their Origami case for the Nexus 9 to review. After a few weeks and of testing, here is the my review.
http://www.amazon.com/roocase-Googl...id=1437516245&sr=8-1&keywords=nexus+9+origami
Pro’s:
First up… it has to be the right price or it won’t’ work for me. MSRP on the case is $49.99, but it sells for $19.98 on Amazon. And it is quite the case, albeit not perfect, for $20.
This thing looks awesome and feels awesome (I’ll revisit feeling in a little bit). The hard shell back is a polycarbonate and is really, really solid. It looks to be a quarter inch thick in some places and thicker on the corners for when you drop it. I do like how the N9 is “pinched” into the case as it will allow for the glass screen covers and you don’t have to worry about the case grabbing on to it. I’m not a big fan of NFC, but for those of you who are… no worries, the thick case still allows for NFC transfers.

}
The cover is made out of polyurethane. The inside cover is like a non-slip surface so when you have the N9 standing, it won’t slide around. The multiple ways you can fold the cover (hence the name Origami) give you plenty of options for your seating position. This is a great option for those who are “road warriors”. After that, the usual stuff you get with most cases is provided such as wake/sleep, and hey… it protects the screen when closed (another topic I will revisit below)
However, looks and feel only get you so far. This case held up to being thrown in a backpack to go to work and to some soccer games just fine. However, I don’t see it as ideal for those rugged people. If you are one of those people who are consistently biking, camping, mountain climbing, sky-diving, and/or warrior against fire-breathing dragons… you may want to check out that Orb System Versa Tough case by rooCASE.
Con’s:
So let’s get back to those things I said I would revisit. First off, I stand by my words that it looks and feel awesome. However, the case does absorb oils from your hands. It takes a little bit to wipe it clean… but keep this in mind. Next thing, and probably the biggest thing is the cover itself. The non-slip surface of the inside cover also sticks to debris. So the chances of scratching the screen is there (but the case does allow for glass screen protectors). The magnets that hold the cover to the case barely, and I mean barely keep the cover closed. As you can see in the photos, the cover opens up in the middle when it is upside-down. So I highly suggest keeping this case to the office/school/home use. Do not use this case for outdoor use (beach, camping, fire-breathing dragons, etc). You will more than likely get debris inside the case and scratch the screen. The last con that I have (and is probably the reason for the loose cover) is that it is not flush to the side of the N9 when closed (see picture of overlap). This is due to how the cover attaches itself to the case.
End Result:
Is the case worth it? I can say yes, as long as you know that the limitations are there. This case looks awesome in the business environment, sleek enough for school, and the cut outs for ports are perfect. I would love to see a better connection of the cover to the overall case to eliminate the flap that hangs over and I would love to see a bit stronger magnets used. The case weighing 0.4lbs adds a small amount of weight… however maybe the guys at rooCASE can develop a skeletonize version of the case can save weight and cost (I can dream, right?).
Either way, it is a great option and worth the $20.

Anyone have issues with the magnetic sleep/wake being activated when the cover is folded behind the device? My tablet will go to sleep if the cover is pressed against the top backside of the device. Think holding the device with your left hand in landscape orientation. For now I have resolved the issue with a small piece of material along the top edge of the device between it and the hard plastic shell. It pushes the top of the device out just enough to prevent the device going to sleep.

roocase Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 Case - Origami 3D Review

* Origami cover folds into landscape, portrait and a typing display
* Smooth polyurethane cover with soft non-scrach interior
* Matte rubberize polycarbonate 3D shell. 4 corner tablet protection.
* Magnetic front cover
First Impressions & Packaging
The case was packaged nicely with a retail package that indicated it contained a quality product inside. It is obvious from the packaging alone that roocase takes pride in its products. I'm not a packaging expert, nor a advertising expert so I will not give this a star rating. However, I was VERY pleased with how it looked before opening the package. Sometimes, most times I feel compelled to throw away product packaging, but this is not one of those times. I'm keeping the packaging as long as I keep the case. Besides, I found a use for it, as it is storing my Samsung Simple case now, LOL.
Second Impressions & Case Design
(4.5 out of 5)
Holding the case for the first time was a WOW moment for me. It is clearly the nicest case I have ever owned for a tablet. I love the design and the flexible top cover which slightly over hangs the edges when closed. The cover can be put into so many different positions that I actually lost track, lol and not only that it has a stand mode that is just absolutely perfect for fetal position bed reading (which I do a LOT in the middle of the night), without needing something propping it up. Sadly, the Samsung Slim case could NOT do this at all and I found that to be the #1 reason to not use the Samsung case. I couldnt imagine a better design than origami case and trust me I spent nearly two months trying to mentally improve upon it. I give the design a 4.5 out of 5 stars mainly because I know they will find a way to make it even better, but how I do not know.
Usage
(4 out of 5)
I've been using this case for nearly 2 Months now and it has not disappointed. Folding and grasping the top cover in a handle like motion is just perfect while walking around with it (pic below), its like having a built-in easy to grip rubber handle, because well that is what it is. The usage and safe handling like this is near perfect for me. 4 out of 5 stars because I actually like having a cover strap to put my hand inside which is what my Nexus 7 case does. But I think a cover strap would be unwelcome by most users seeking a thin case.
Durability
(5 out of 5)
I really do not believe in giving a product a perfect score because with time EVERYTHING can be improved upon, which would suggest your perfect score was really not perfect after all. However, I have dropped my tablet once already onto a hard wooden floor by accident and was fully expecting a destroyed screen. And when I opened the top cover to see no damage what so ever I was surprised as it hit the floor pretty hard. So as for solidness I think this case is excellent and will give it a 5 out of 5 just because it survived a very hard fall from about 4 feet or more. However being as thin as it is I would NOT try dropping it intentionally. I probably just got lucky, YAY!
Fit
(4 out of 5)
The Tablet fits into the case near perfectly, however on the bottom right corner I find the tablet popping out of the case easily, almost too easy. If I try to remove the tablet from the case from any other corner I find it very tight and the case does not want to let go, however If I try to first pop it out from the bottom right it just comes out with NO effort, almost too easily in fact. Not sure if this is by design or a slight fit flaw but it seems like the bottom right corner just does not have the "snap" feel to it like the other corners do. Also, one note to mention, you must remove the case if you need to change out microSD cards. Overall I give the fit a 4 out of 5 stars.
Finish
(4 out of 5)
The finish of this case could not be any better as I just love the feel to my hands (and to the eyes when cleaned), although I do find the back cover capturing every finger print like a law enforcement finger print scanner machine, haha. I have had to wash this case under warm water once already just because it felt like it was sapping oils out of my hands, lol. Also the inside of the top cover, which is a light grey colored rubber material on mine, likes to darken from holding it which is surprising because I am a hand washing addict, maybe to the point of being a germaphobe. Yes I wash my hands probably 15-20 times a day but that hasn't stopped the cover from getting darkened quite a bit in the fold areas where skin contacts it the most. Either this is dirt (I doubt it though) or a better explanation would be hand oils that is trapped inside the rubber material because washing it did not restore the darkened areas to light grey. Also, one little note I almost forgot to mention, because the top inside cover is a rubber material with a honey comb texture, this texture leaves a slightly annoying design on the screen which has me wanting to wipe the screen down far too often, after every openeing in fact. Maybe the top inside cover would be better if it was made from a microfiber material? Over all I give this case a 4 out of 5 for its beautiful finish when cleaned.
My thoughts after 2 Months of use
Well I must say that I think the ONLY thing that can be improved would be weight, and maybe material used for the inside of cover. For a Slim case I think it weighs a tad bit much. However for everyday use around the house or the office this is THE case to get. I love the black and grey color combination and the texture of this case is fantastic, however I'm not much of a fan of the honey comb marks it puts on the screen, but this can be ignored. Over all it is well worth the asking price and built like a tank without the weight of a tank. If only they made it almost exactly like this but with microfiber material for the inside of the top cover, that would have been my preference, not to mention dropping about 100 grams of weight off of it at least.
Overall I give this case a score of 4.5 out of 5 stars, as its just really that good!
Images below provided by roocase. Last one taken by me showing how I like to hold it, with its built-in handle. This is where the rubber material really comes in handy as its VERY solid and feels like its impossible to drop in this manner.

Verizon Moto Mod Case Review

I picked up the Moto Mod Case from Verizon a couple of days ago and figured I'd do a quick review for anyone else who was thinking about getting it.
I tend to be a person who likes to carry a lot of things with me just in case I need them. For a couple of years now I've had a small camera bag kept in my backpack that I take with me to and from work or anytime I travel. In that camera case were chargers and cables, some memory cards/flash drives and a multi-card reader. This was my "just in case" bag and worked well, except that it was relatively bulky and fat. Now that I have a Moto Z Force and I've picked up a couple of mods, I figured I'd look at the Mod Case as an alternative to this.
The case it's very nicely sized for me... while taller and wider than the camera bag I was using, it's about an inch less "fat", which means it fits better in my backpack where I have plenty of vertical space but didn't want my bag bulging so much.
The case itself is a relatively rigid shell wrapped in fabric. It feels like it's good quality. There's a carry handle at the top and a loop with a carbineer attached. The loop doesn't feel SUPER solid, so I don't think I'd ever risk hooking it on the outside of a bag and not worrying that it might get ripped away.
The zip feels good quality and has a double zipper head on it. When open you're presented with three "zones." The first zone is the inside cover. Here is a soft mesh pouch that closes with a zipper. In this pouch you can put chargers and cables, etc. There's a decent amount of space here, but do note that it's not overtly deep, perhaps a cm or 1/2 and inch. You can put bigger things in here, but they will bulge beyond the the normal thickness.
The next zone is a Mod "Folder." This is a flap that is attached to the case at the handle end. It's wrapped in a soft fabric/foam and has pouches for four mods, two on the top, two underneath. All three of the modes I have (JBL, Projector, Incipio Battery) as well as a couple of back fit very nicely in these pouches. Tight enough to hold them securely, but loose enough that it isn't super hard to get out. You will need to hands to remove them generally.
The final zone is the bottom of the case. Here are a couple more pouches made of the same material mounted to a board that is held in place by velcro. This is a nice option as you can use 'em for more mods if you want (or other small things) or take the bottom piece out all together to put in a larger item like a laptop chargers. The bottom is a little deeper than the pouch in the cover, but remember it's designed to handle two mods more or less touching each other.
Over all I was very impressed with the quality of the case. It feels really nice and seems like it'll do a good job. Further, I'm happy to report that it isn't branded as Verizon... there isn't a single Verizon logo on the bag at all so if that's would be a negative to you, you needn't worry. The bag is mostly black with a few red highlights (nod to verizon there I guess), and it has a small metal logo plate on the front that simply says: DROID.
Let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

Nice review! I didn't even know this case existed as I just picked up my Moto Z yesterday. I might have to take a look at this case as I to carry around a bag (I have for years) and one designed a little more for Moto Mods would be handy.
Also, do you know any good sources (besides Verizon that is...) for reviews of Moto Mods?
They seem to be slim due to the phone's lack of popularity...
Probably the best place would be right here. I have three mods (other than the back plates).
Projector: I have a bit more involved review of the projector in another thread. But the short version: Cool toy, but not really worth the price unless you do a LOT of presentations. Works okay in a dim room, needs a pretty dark room for things like movies an TV shows that aren't really bright. If you've got the extra cash lying around it's nice to have an works great if it's dark enough.
Battery Pack: Highly recommended if you're a power user or often away from an outlet for extended period of time. Wireless charging if a nice add on. Doesn't add a lot of thickness and some (myself included) keep it on all the time except when using other mods.
JBL Speakers: Great sound and really nice if you use your phone a lot for music. Probably more expensive than comparable BT speakers, but also nice to not have to worry about pairing, also has a battery but can draw from phone battery too, so, unlike a BT speaker, if you run out of battery but still have some in your phone, you're okay. The kickstand is nice too... I actually used the Speaker mod on a plane trip just for the kickstand!
this case looks cool
just re-read that, and it is a great review. i bought this case this week, it is pretty cool, just need more mods to fill it up
Got the case and love it
