I bought Sony Xperia L (C2104) just a month back. Already faced quality problem regarding photo and video capture.
Today it fell from my daughter's hand (only from 2-3 feet height) and the screen got too many cracks. Though the touch screen is working.
I have used (and dropped many times) many phones--- Nokia E51,E75, C6, Samsung Ace, Samsung S2, this is first phone which broke like this.
Even cheaper set sony Xperia J has Gorilla Glass, why this set doesnot have only sony can tell. Actually it was my fault, I thought a mobile in this price range must have a gorilla or alike glass.
FYI.
Does anybody know the approx charges required for replacing the screen? I think its better to sell this phone in ebay and buy another gorilla glass product. What do you suggest?

Gorilla Glass doesn't really prevent screens from being cracked. Its most important role is to protect the screen from being scratched.
I've seen lots of devices that have Gorilla Glass with a broken screen.
Your phone just felt the wrong side.

you're right man...my sensation with gorilla glass have cracked because fall from my shirt pocket 4 feet's away...and it cost 145 US Dollars for replacement..and I just sold it and bought a new phone...
Wat ? Xperie J has a Gorilla Glass ? Haven't heard of it.
Also Xperie L has a scratch resistant glass preventing glass being scratch. It's not build to protect the glass from being cracked.

Sony mobiles's service is also pathetic
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
I am wondering what is the use of these glasses, only for better touch experience and looks? what about durability? My old nokia C6-00's plastic screen with a screen protector looks as new as it was earlier.
I found sony mobiles's service is also pathetic. The sony mobile's service center is not in my city, I asked them the approx charges to replace the screen / digitizer so that I can order it and later when the same will available with them I shall then send my phone for repairing.
But the arrogant people in the service center, reluctant to tell me anything in advance. They want me to sent the phone after that they will tell me the charges -> order the same -> wait 10 -20 days .. blah blah blah..
Pathetic.
Well each phone has its own facts , all the gorilla glass are not strong as hell ! My friend has lumia , before buying he was impressed with the durability of it as it was demonstrated by the person at nokia shop ! But his phone felt suddenly over a steel and phone is broken !

Yes!
Mine felt around 2 or 3 feet on tile. It was no problem.
Then it felt around 4 feet or a little more (on tile) but nothing happenned.
I will repair it asap because my connection between the two parts of the slider are broken. Need to buy an other slider.
It also depends how it falls.I dropped my old lg o1 on hone, cement, between stairs for 2 floors, etc and it worked very well.I find the most damaging dropping it on small rocks(gravel) ... I also dropped my XL from about 3 feet or a little more on a corner on a hard plastic surface and it didn't even got a scratch.I find the back cover really really resistant to scratches.I went for 1 week in a holyday and on the beach the sand scratched a lot my screen protector but the back cover looks like first day.I also kept it in girls bag with tons of other stuff like keys, coins, lighters, other phones, etc and not even scratch.I think it's the best back cover that i ever seen. It's almost like it doesn't need a case, but due to further drops from a higher area one case is needed.
About the screen...I really can't say how resistant it is.I think i don't want to know

You're right
My XMP (and my X)L have plastic edges around the screen. I think it helped me a lot when it felt
Concerning the bakc cover: I saw an other thread with members who were dissatisfied about it. But I hope it will last longer than my XMP one.

I find my HTC Sensation very a solid and hardy phone; I've accidentally dropped it a few times but thankfully it has emerged unscathed each time. I personally hate the idea of putting on a case but I'd like to hear some of your own experiences. If you have somehow damaged your phone, I'd like to hear how that happened (fell from what height, on what surface, dragged across how far, etc), and also post photos of the resulting damage. This whole post might sound a bit sadistic but I think it'll serve as a good lesson for the rest of us and perhaps it could also give us a better idea of what to look for in a case should we finally decide to buy one.
So, fellow owners of the HTC Sensation, show us your phone's battle scars!
This is actually a very good idea! I'm really curious about this too!
Well I unfortunatly thought the same about my phone after having dropped it a couple of times and it surviving unscathed. I was in my kitchen and I lost grip of my phone, sending it plumetting down to the hard tile floor. It fell about 5 feet and landed facedown on the top right-hand corner. The end result was a spread of cracks along the top of my digitizer. Moral of the story: sensations are NOT indestructable. Resilient/mostly scratch-proof? Yes. But a bad fall on a hard surface WILL result in moderate-severe damage. If you feel that you can adequately keep your sensation safe and hate cases as much as I do then the risk might be worth it, but if you hope to keep your phone completely unscathed no matter what, get a case.
You sir, are way too lucky. I decided not to use a case (AND THIS IS THE ONLY DAY I didn't want to use a case *big sigh!*) totally forgot my phone was in my pocket. Took it off to put on another pair and of all places... I was standing on hard floor. Thank goodness the screen didn't crack! The cover however, is already replaced. Thank goodness it's that easy! (I just with the antenna's werent there)
Just a bit of damage, the rest seems like dust. but there's mine

I don't have a picture as I quickly sold mine. I got a brand new sensation a while ago and within less than a week, I found a scratch on the so called scratch resistant gorilla glass, the worst part is that I don't even know where it came from. I've taken good care of the phone within that one week period and have never dropped it or anything. At that point, I quickly bought a screen protector and bought a new phone considering the cost of replacing a cell phone costs less than replacing a digitizer. Moral of the story, always use a screen protector if you don't want scratches, the advertising for gorilla glass being durable and scratch resistant is drastically exagerated.
Im from Serbia, and getting case for phone here is VERY hard..
I got my own Teracell (copy of capdase) for sensation. But i hate it cause my phone feels fat and big (when you are holding it in hand.. i know this sounds weird to weirdo' people ).
So i bought Hard Shell .. link.
Its not same as Teracell protection but it has better looks..
As far as screen protectors - some one told me, here in Serbia, that due to curves on the edges of Sensation screen, it is impossible to fit any good screen protector..
Can u recommend any to me ?
Thanks
@KAwAtA Ooh that looks nasty. Glad to hear the glass was intact. When it dropped the frame didn't pop out from the main phone body I assume? And looks like just scratches and no really major dents to the frame. Thanks for the photo btw!
@Laynee I agree with you, I don't see many screen protectors marketed to work specially for Sensation, and my guess is also due to the curved glass. But I have never been a fan of screen protectors (and phone cases) anyway. My previous Hero survived 2 years without visible scratches with normal wear. Pretty happy with the Gorilla Glass so far.
@Radio_Dude how was the scratch, was it actually very clearly visible? I've honestly not seen phones with Gorilla Glass scratched and I'm intrigued. My old HTC Hero had Gorilla Glass and it took quite a lot of punishment being in my pocket with various other items; the glass was unscathed but the metal frame didn't fare too well. So far so good with my Sensation!
@Marioag_0412 That sound really painful, I really feel sorry for that! 5 feet does seem pretty high. Like you I hate cases too, and dropping phones seem rather inevitable. Hopefully if it does fall, it won't be from such a height and on a rather forgiving surface.
Why people resist using cases and screen protectors is beyond me. They're cheap, and there are PLENTY that are virtually unnoticeable on the device but give better grip and protect better.
Be smart. Protect your investment with a case and screen protector.
fiz3nigma: believe it or not, it was quite noticeble especially under light. When I moved my nail over it, I can even feel the presence of the scratch. I heard that gorilla glass is especially prone to being scratched by sand (being made from silicon and all). Nonetheless, i'm playing it safe now and have put on a screen protector as soon as I got my replacement sensation.

Hey d-iivil, why don't you just buy a digitizer from the internet and do it yourself. Here in canada, there are stores that are willing to do the work for 70 bucks and buying the digitizer separately cost around 30 bucks from ebay. that's only 100 canadian, who ever is charging you 270 euro is obviously ripping you off, for that kind of money, might as well put it into getting a new phone

In reality I had to pay only 30e since the insurance company paid the rest, that's why I also didn't want to do the job myself. Htc repair changed the digitizer and lcd.

Hi Guys
I ordered this phone yesterday and now I'm actually just waiting to receive it.
I think the phone seems awesome at its price, although I was close at buying a brand new replacement LG O2x for only 66% of the price of Galaxy R.
I'm still a little in doubt if I will keep the phone or not, mainly due to the fear of a screen which is easily scratched. Most other phones out there uses Corning Gorilla Glass, but Galaxy R only uses "scratch-resistant" glass.
Also the new announcements at Mobile World Conference have my interest, e.g. to have a smaller-in-the-pocket phone with similar or better resolution.
What are you experiences so far? Have you made minor surface scratches or is the screen actually quite sturdy?
I would prefer not to use a screen protector.
Best regards, Martin / mhca
The screen glass is pretty sturdy and is actually scratch resistant.
But it would be recommended for heavy users that applying a scratch guard would be better and you can have a peace of mind as you would have to care less about scratches.
About better handsets available in the future only time will tell. But one thing wont change, that is Nvidia's huge efforts to bring game developers to support Tegra devices which will have very few parallels in the Android handsets market.
Till then tuned !
yep SGR has less sturdy scratch resistant glass.. I would prefers gorilla glass.. but sometime it is overrated too lol!...
so my phone already got a tiny scratch after 4th day bought it.. hehe..

Exactly what I'm worried about. I would never keep the phone in my pocket together with coins.
However, sometimes I toss it somewhere lying together with other stuff, e.g. when passing through airport security.
I'll make up my mind soon.
I'm still very interested to hear more comments from users with experiences.
I used my phone without screen protector for one week after I had bought it. I must mention that I was kinda a cautious and never put coins, keys and mobile to the same pocket. I haven't had any single scratch.
I use a silicon case and plus a hard plastic pouch case when I'm carrying it on my pocket. Not even a single scratch

yeah that was silly of me.. putting the phone in the pocket with coins.. I was rushing with my hand fulls with stuffs..
but the wierd thing was.. I had my HTC Legend once..(Gorilla glass and no Screen Protector) and my Legend did not have any scratches at all for few months..
my bro also using his Galaxy S for a year without any scratches. He does put his phone anywhere though..
still.. Gorilla Glass "a bit" better than normal scratch resistant glass..

I think it would be a bad decision to choose the LG 2X.
About the screen of SGR... I don't have any scratches yet and don't read in other forums that people complain of this issue.
You can find lots of people with Gorilla Glass phones who have scratches and break completely in a normal drop from the hands.
I would buy the SGR definetely.

Me and my wife using it heavily but carry it inside the original pouch or my wife in S2 pouch which completely protects the phone when kept inside a women's purse!
I hate using screen protector and not even using a case, still the phone is entirely scratch-less all around (not just the screen). If you are reasonably careful, I am sure it can last like my S1 or S2 which are scratch-less forever.
the screen is very good with scratch
i dropped it from waist height on the concrete and nothing happend to the screen - i use screen protector though.
i'm starting to doubt they tricked us - that R actually has a gorilla glass

Uh, dude the OP is from February.
I have CGG on my moto xt720 and i have had few scratches when kept in pocket with keybunch and coins..!! That was after 1-2 months. Then i realised i should always put a screen guard (not the privacy guard which interferes the touch sensitivity) on any smartphone whatsoever..!
Now, on the day i bought my SGR, i put a screen guard and with a fake capdase back cover, its super safe and no visible scratches .. even after 5 months..

I use a screen protector since the first day, and when the protector is scratched, I only have to replace this, another thing is that with time, screen protector makes work bad the screen, it turns crazy. Then, I must replace the protector.

Yup I might be the first A-hole to shatter my screen. Dropped on top left corner from 5 feet. Completely anhiliated the screen to the point that by the impact zone a crater of gorilla glass is gone. And the bezel, well yea a piece of that disappeared as well.. Its completely my fault, but I will def be reconsidering plastic devices in the future. Could it have killed them to include a legit metal bezel... Time to go cry haha
Anyone know if new screens are even available yet?

Drop tests aren't always accurate, as quite a lot depends on where the point of impact is after the fall. Overall though, given that the S4 did survive a few of the drops is a good thing, as it seemed the S3 is a bit less durable.
Either way though, Gorilla Glass isn't meant to offer a ton of protection for drops - It's scratch resistant, not shatterproof.

Haha I most certainly am... I'll be posting pics today. I'm just most upset that the bezel chipped apart. I think that if it were able to absorb some of the impact or if there was a simple metal bezel the device would have fared much better.
Actually, the fact the plastic bezel broke too meant that even a metal case wouldn't have saved you.
Read up about "crush zones" in cars and how if the frame (bezel in this case) is crumpled, it reduces the damage to the people inside (screen in this case).
It sounds like your phone hit the corner and hit hard enough that unless you had a TPU case, it would've been dead either way.
+1. A lot of factors go into how phone damage occurs when you drop it. Five feet without a case purely on the corner is enough to damage the best of builds but throw on a decent tpu and your phone might live to see the light. Also would like to add that as long as you can replace the screen with ease, which luckily Samsung designed the phone well enough to be disassemble, it's not that bad of a situation.
At the end of the day though you should really get phone insurance. It's the best case money can buy lol

If you're a little handy with fixing phones and what not then you might be in luck. The glass and lcd can be separated just like the s3. Lcd which is the display has the touch built into it. The glass is just for protection. Ive done it on the s3 many times. With a heat gun and a blade. The glass alone cost $30-40. Find your local repair shop at most you should pay is $150.

In the past ATT always gives you a month to add insurance. It's a $200 deductible but might be worth checking out.

The device still works and I will post pictures tomorrow.

Dude! I totally feel your pain. I cringed and had flashbacks from when I did the same thing to my Captivate a while back. Same height, landed on the spot and same result. I had dropped it from 5 feet and higher before but that sweet spot is death for a phone.
Mine took the plunge from a bunk bed, yours?
As the phones screen size increases the phone will crack easier from drops

Yea its a heart breaker, I was using anbold iPhone 4 for 2 months waiting on it.. Talking smack to all my iPhone 5 owning family members.
I live in Phx and the weather just hit 100 the last 2 days, come home from work and one of the 2 ac units was broke. In the dark using it as a flash light, trying to pull the disconnect on the ac and then the crash. .. wanted tovcry but manned up and held it in haha
Thanks everyone for the the suggestions
I just had the worst moment with my gs4 so far. Dropped it from pocket hieght with a cade on and the screen shattered. Obiously gorrila glass is horible if it broke with one fall in a case, my lg thrill had at least 20 drops from above my head and survived each one. Does anyone how i could get a replacment OEM digitizer online and install it without gettimg dust on the inside of the phone?

That sucks...
Ebay or Amazon. You'll start to see replacement screens there first. But i don't know of anything available yet...
Gorilla Glass is not break resistant. This is directly from Corning...the manufacturer of Gorilla Glass. I've seen phones dropped lots of times, some being my own. It all depends on how it lands. They're more likely to break from a face flat drop than from an edge hit drop. Just my experiences though.
"According to Corning, with its new Native Damage Resistance, Gorilla Glass 3 has been developed to provide improved durability to withstand deep scratches and cracks in the glass. As a result, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with Native Damage Resistance provides enhanced scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility, and better retained strength once a scratch occurs."
I heard the lcd and digitizer might be glued together and if thats true i would have to replace both of them. Thats messed up samsung, this phone is not strong at all

Unfortunately, the digitizer and glass is glued together, until both are released, Samsung charges 169.95.

i would not say it is weak, every drop test i have seen the phone only cracks from high drop on the corner or face down drops. that being said until a super strong glass tech comes you should get an insurance plan or a case.
You're probably going to want to be more careful with your 650.00 toy.
I have a case on it and it wasnt even that bad of a drop, just saying im surprised it broke that easy

i hope someone file a class lawsuit against corning!
it said "Gorilla Glass 3 offers improved scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility, and improved retained strength"
i also cracked my s4 screen from like 15 inches high to the sink, it cracked on the first drop!
i dropped my Note1, Note2 multi times and nothing happen!
if you dont have insurance on the phone, try to claim it on your credit card!
i just checked my Citibank, Discover, and American Express, they protected the product against theft and damage for the first 90 days!

So let's sue because you dropped your phone? I don't see how someone else should be responsible for your accident/negligence. Just because something is resistant to damage doesn't mean it's damage proof. It's a piece of plastic and thin glass, how strong do you expect it to be?

i have no problem if they just cut their bullsh*t!
"Gorilla Glass 3 offers improved scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility, and improved retained strength"
that' fault advertising!
i have read 3 people (including me) cracked the screen on galaxy s4 on the first drop!
where is the "improved retained strength"?
i dropped my Note, NoteII, multi time, nothing happens!
Dunno how u did it but my cousin dropped his from a bunk bed onto my Z-5500 subwoofer (google it. Hard wood) thats lil more then 2x ur pocket height. There was no screen crack or dmg from the incident and no case!

sounds like an iphone 4 design flaw all over again. I guess this is my only phone that ill need a heavy case on because it is so prone to shattering. Anyone know who to contact or where to go to ask Samsung for a repair?

Bad news for ya, almost all smartphones these days have the "iphone 4 design flaw" where when you drop it the wrong way without decent protection, it will break. If you are prone to dropping phones then insurance is the best answer for you. I always get a screen protector with a good case in order to skip the insurance and have my phone looking brand new for resell each year.
You dont need to replace both. It is possible to just replace the front glass. I do at least 3 s3's a week. Just takes alot of patience. Heck of a lot cheaper

Before you go bashing them, you should go read up on the product.
The retained strength has to do with micro-scratches and nothing to do with dropping the phone...

You just have to be meticulous. I just ordered 3 replacement glass from china yesterday. Theyre selling around $26 each. Ill be doing a s4 when they come in. I custom cut my adhesive. Thats the secret to keeping dirt out. 2 layers mininum of high grade 3m adhesive.

I've had my S8+ for just over 3 months now. I generally keep my phones pristine. Always in a case. Today my phone fell out of my pocket whilst getting out of the car, falling screen first onto the rough concrete. I picked it up off the floor and found that, surprise surprise the screen had those dreaded spider webs over the two top corners.
The phone still works exactly the same so the digitiser seems to be unaffected by the drop.
My question is two pronged.
1. How much would a screen replacement cost (samsung and 3rd party repair shop)
2. Is it possible for just the screen glass to be replaced instead of the full oled screen?
If yes then how much would it cost?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers.

Would samsung charge the same for just the glass replacing?
Might be cheaper to sell the phone and get a 2nd hand S8.
I will speak to samsung tomorrow.
Thanks
I'm sure I saw a post here on xda Samsung quoting some one s8 front glass replacement 170 mark or could be 315 mark that's USD it was a while ago.. Can't really remember exact figure. best to ring them or sell on ebay and get your self a mint one...
