[Q] Fastboot error - General Questions and Answers

Hi everyone,
I am trying to install Cyanogenmod 10 on my Sony Xperia miro. Earlier I had rooted my phone using the software "UnlockRoot".
When I type in "fastboot flash boot boot.img" I get an error saying "FAILED(remote:The device must be rooted first)"
I have enabled USB debugging. I haven't followed the tutorial on Sony's site because I thought that the bootloader must already be unlocked since my device has been rooted.
I'd appreciate some help.
Thanks in advance!

Your device is not properly root as fastboot said. Try re rooting with latest binary.

Okay, I'll try that out. Thank you very much for the help.

I re-rooted my phone, and am still having the same problem. How do I get proper root access?
Thanks!

Have you unlocked the bootloader ?
Sent from my HTC Desire C using xda premium

My firmware version is 4.0.4.
I used Unlockroot Pro to root my device. I am not sure whether it has unlocked the bootloader. If my device is rooted, does it mean that it has an unlocked bootloader? Do I unlock the bootloader after my device is rooted, or must I un-root it first?
Do you think this software is safe: http://www.unlockroot.com/unlockphone.html?
Thanks!

If ur device is rooted it doesnt mean that u have unlocked bootloader properly
I dont think the way u have rooted has unlocked ur phone's bootloader
Try unlocking bootloader first
Search for it
This should fix ur problem:thumbup:

You could try to restore a nandroid backup if you have one...
Difficult thing.. You could try to push boot.img and recovery.img again.. but that wouldnt be possible without bootloader.. quite a problem this is mate..
Install stock rom again ??
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Try this bro.. Connect your phone through ADB, and then in the terminal, type "adb reboot-bootloader".. Or "adb reboot bootloader"..
---------- Post added at 09:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:27 PM ----------
Or you could just try to reverse the steps that caused this problem..
stock ruu is having everything you can install that and unlock bootloader again.

Use adb to reboot to Bootloader.
Whenever I boot to bootloader it boots to recovery

Install RUU..
This one sounds tricky. You could build a USB UART rig if that was a Galaxy S device but, well...
It may need direct modification by service center only hardware.
I installed ruu stock completely still nothing

You mean you fixed it? Care to explain how, in case someone else ever comes up against this? (I'm sure it's unlikely, but I'm kinda curious about it)
How did u know u has noooo boot loader
I think it was present but not booting
Is it me or everyone here is throwing the term UART around so loosely? Let me tell you something, UART is useless for most of us, so repeating it over and over isn't going to make you look better. It's only useful if you have the correct tools. On the other hand, I guess it shouldn't be too hard to get the serial emulation over usb if you got the right hardware and software. But heck half of us won't even dare to take apart our phones.
@ShadowCode,
If your bootloader was gone then you would've a bricked device.

I was trying to boot into bootloader infinite time , I also don't know why it was not showing earlier and how it is fixed .
I think it was simply because I was continuously messing up with aroma installer as I wanted to Integrate it in my Rom

*facepalm* Revert back to Android 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 version, then root your phone (but you'll stay in Gingerbread firmware since ICS can't be root directly)
If you still wanna have root in ICS,check carefully in your phone forum section

Locked bootloader (unlock allowed yes) - You can't flash custom kernel or custom Rom that aren't base of stock Rom,but you can unlock it
Locked bootloader (unlock allowed no) - Same as above, but you can't unlock it for other reason (eg.contract phone by at&t,so they lock it permanently)
Unlocked bootloader (unlock allowed yes) - You can flash custom kernel and custom Rom that are not base on stock Rom (yay!),but you lost DRM key and can't use some application like TrackID...unlocked using Official Sony website
Unlock bootloader (unlocked allowed no) - Same as above, but it's not actually 'unlocked',but it's a patched version of bootloader which it still have DRM,but still can be flash custom kernel or Rom...unlocked using TestPoint usually

So I have to unlock boot loader to root my phone?
Or I can flash custom ROM only by unlocking boot loader or root is needed?

No no no,you doesn't have to unlock bootloader to root, and you can ACTUALLY flash custom Rom on your phone with a locked bootloader that are BASED ON STOCK ROM....but I would recommended to unlock bootloader as custom Rom wil usually ask for a custom kernel...

Sounds like you're missing drivers or not in fastboot usb screen in bootloader.
Sent from my One X using xda app-developers app
It says fastboot USB...guess I'll try and reload the drivers.....sidenote...TWRP is on my phone but it won't let me flash a Rom....I'm so confused
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Also aren't I supposed to have "SuperSU" because I don't...and now my screen looks like this in bootloader mode
*TAMPERED*
*UNLOCKED*
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Do some reading
I've read and read and read I actually just flashed the recovery via fastboot and everything went ok I guess but I still don't have supersu and there is no option for twrp when I turn the phone on in BL mode but when I select the.recovery option the twrp pulls up....weird.....but it won't let me.flash anything..
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Well of course there will be no option for trwp in bootloader it's stock ..what do you mean twrp won't let you flash anything what Rom are you even trying to flash
Jelly bam
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
And I thought I was supposed to have superSU
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Nope how would you just think where would root come from....at this point you flash root or a rom a will give you root access
---------- Post added at 03:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:55 PM ----------
What do you by it won't flash
I think you are quite confused. This often happens when one does not read enough and gets excited a starts doing stuff.
How things work:
First off. Super su is an application the exists on a rom that is rooted.
With the one x, you are not actually rooting the ROM that is on the phone. You are just unlocking the bootloader which allows you to flash a custom recover which allows you to flash roms that are already rooted. Once you flash a rom that is rooted you will have a root management utility be it super su or an equivalent.
Make sense?

Installing CWM depends on the device mate. The method you gave will not work on a Samsung device, right?

Yup, that's correct. Unless we know what device the OP owns, its best not to answer anything specific. :good:
With so little information, little can advise you, you can go to your cell forum and see that there will be different tutorials since according to the mobile will have to use software or other
