Hey everyone, thanks for looking at this and hopefully helping me out. I'm new to rooting my phone and installing new roms and stuff, but I researched about as much as I could for about a week before I even rooted.
Now I've moved on and installed a new rom (CM7). Before installing I used clockwork and formated the /system, /data, /cache, and dalvik. At first everything was ok, but after about 15 minutes it turned off. I read up on battery problems, so kept my phone plugged in all weekend (got up to 4.196V-ish, with 0mA in or out) then deleted the battery file, rebooted, unplugged the phone and let it drain completely (even while it still had a charge it would turn off randomly but I figured it would be ok). After it was completely drained I completely charged it again and it still randomly turns off.
At first I thought maybe it was just the rom, but no one else seems to have the same problem as me (that I can find), so I downloaded an ICS rom to try that. Same problems. So far I have done the following to try and find out WTF is going on...
Installed Elixr to see battery drainage (sitting at main screen doing nothing its roughly -8mA, but right after boot or opening a program it jumps to -300mA to -480mA)
Done NUMEROUS battery pulls (with and without deleting the battery config file)
Switched ROMS
Any help would be amazing
PS: Before rooting or flashing a new mod my phone would shut off on its own, but only once a week, maybe. Now it turns off as soon as I unlock my sim card. However, it doesn't turn off at all if I have it plugged in.

Well, if you were having this issue before the rooting took place, this very well may be hardware related. There are a few things I recommend before the dreaded unroot and send back to manufacturer route (assuming the phone is under warranty still). It's been proven or at least shown that battery calibration (the whole charge to 0Ma and then fully discharge and then recharge) is a pipe dream.
I would first say find out if the CM7 ROM you're using is OCing or UVing, while you may see some people OCing to 1.3 or higher and UVing -75, not all phones are created equal in capabilities and some phones will randomly freeze/turn off if they don't like your OC and UV settings. I would also suggest flashing a different ROM to see if this problem persists. Cleardroid is what I recommend just to get an idea if it is in fact a OC or UV problem as I believe cleardroid is set up to default stock settings.
You can also try a new battery, I have heard/read/seen that bad batteries can cause reboots. Again though if this was an issue you were sometimes experiencing before, you may have hit the tip of the iceberg on a hardware issue and its finally starting to show now. Hope this helps.

I guess the issue is with the battery itself. Try getting a new battery. I heard some guys experiencing the same and sorting things out replacing the battery....
Leave the charger plugged in. If it doesn't reboot then that will let you know most likely it is the battery.

That was my thoughts exactly. However, if the ROM or kernel or whatever is set to shut off the phone at a certain reading of discharge from the battery, ie -500mA, this could also be the problem.
I thought it could have been a problem with the phone as well, but before it would shut off on its own MAYBE once a month. 90% of those I attributed to overloading the phone, closing facebook, opening the internet, starting to load a webpage then open a new txt I just recieved while the phone was still vibrating type things.
Now it still feels like it's just quitting on me, it never turns off while the screen is locked or while its charging. So far after the new ROM it has shut off when I place a call, when I receive a call, clicking on a notification, opening the messaging app, clicking download in the market, and my favorite when I unlock it from sleep.
I will download a different rom right now and try it. Just to double check this is what I've been doing to install a new rom... I boot my phone into recovery (vol- and power), go to recovery from the boot screen (opens clockworkmod), scroll down to mounts and storage, have it format /system, /data and /cache, go back to wipe data/factory reset, then install zip from sdcard, select the rom and go... I know some roms require inspiremod, should I still install this if I'm USING an inspire??
Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate it
If it does turn out to be the battery or you just decide to get a new one to test it out. I recommend these, they are awesome and the only thing anyone should try besides HTC factory replacements. Good luck and I hope this works out for you.
Anker Batteries
i only skimmed this. but cleaning battery contacts can help also check the side door, sometimes that can cause issues as well. air can out everything and clean metal contacts with rubbing (ipa) alcohol.
So I installed cleardroid. Once again everything worked fine for the first 10-15 minutes and then the shutdowns started again, always when making the phone do something (unlocking, clicking a notification, opening a program, etc) but never when the phone is charging.
I'll clean off every bronze or gold contact I can find but I think I might be fighting a lost cause lol. Three different ROMS, all with the same problem leads me to believe its a hardware issue. Since all the chips in these phones are all small and use multilayer boards I won't be able to replace anything myself so I see a new phone in my near future.
Thanks guys!
If it doesn't do it when its chargeing then it is the battery. I had bought my inspire from someone and it was having those issues ordered a new HTC stock battery from newegg for like $12 and has been working perfectly since then and honestly if you want the best battery rom absolution is the rom you should check out. It's a non sense rom but again I'd just buy a new battery. I had mine timed it'd reset at 92% 74% and 49% xD

hmm, I would say try a new battery before getting a new phone. Worst case scenario is that you spent $15 to learn you need a new phone as opposed to spending $100+ on a new phone...this is of course assuming you want to keep the inspire and not just looking for a reason to get upgrade ahaha
I agree. It still sounds like a battery issue.
I would agree this definitely sounds like an internal short in the battery. Sounds like it's shutting off whenever it gets a significant load on it. Try a new battery first.
I had a similar issue though I was tweaking the CPU. Learned my lesson.

Yeah, Id bet money that its a bad battery. I had this same exact issue with my Inspire. If it shuts off more in low reception areas but it isn't shutting off when plugged in, its definitely the battery. I would try to find someone with an Inspire and try switching them batteries and see if it stops.
If I tried to use the flash with my camera, the phone would shut off. My phone would randomly reboot or turn off. ATT told me they had "some" bad batches of batteries. My phone was still under warranty so ATT sent me a new battery. All the problems went away!
The battery door on the Inspire becomes wonky the more you open it, I was having a problem like yours, new battery and new door has me going good.
I have been running the new cm9 ics ROM for about 2 days now, and had just got all my data and apps sorted and fully working. I sat down, watched some TV, and after 30 mins i checked my phone. Black screen ( i assume its locked) i tap the power button, nothing, again nothing. I now think i must have turned my phone off. I now hold the power button, nothing, again, nothing. I grab my charger, put my phone on charge and notice no orange or green light. I have repeatedly tried to revive my phone but nothing works. I don't know if its the software, battery, charger, Im so confused. Please if anyone has had the same problem, or has any suggestions, i would appreciate it very much. Thanks.
some extra details: i charged my phone over night the day before, so it shouldn't have died ( i know you shouldnt charge overnight, but i do :/)
i wasn't trying to flash anything or messing around with files, it was in my pocket.
i didn't drop it

Don't panic. Stay calm. The most of our ics roms suffer from reboots or freezes at this stage of development. Your phone simply froze, this can happen with screen on or turned off. If the three button combo (power and volume + -) does not work, You need to wait until the battery drains out.
if you pull the battery there is a chance to freeze your emmc chip and really brick your phone. If you connect the phone to PC before pulling the Batt there's a little lower risk. But I still don't recommend to do so. After your phone is running again, you should overvolt by 25 to hopefully prevent your phone from freezing again.
Ps.
Really, please stay calm, this happened to me about 20 times on ics roms and I'm not the only one.

thanks, i will just wait then, is it normal that adb won't recognise the device? and also two things, how long roughly will it take to drain completely? and when it is completely drained, what do i do? charge as normal?
thanks a lot

1. Yes, if it's frozen adb does not recognize the device
2. Depends on how much loaded your battery was. Could be between 1-12 hours
For me very often it didn't need that long, phone restarted by itself after some time.. (30 mins?) But sometimes I also had to wait long..
3.yes, charge normal
Edit: since your screen is off it could take even more than 12 hours
post your results
Sent by my fingers to your head.
Nothing yet i think i will have to wait to tomorrow
EDIT: 11:00 am GMT still nothing, it's been almost 24 hours; should I just keep waiting?
And is there any way to tell wether it's frozen, or the Emmc chip is broken? Thanks
Hey, I've been looking around the forums, and it seems to me that my phone's emmc chip is fine. I admit I did, in a panic, pull out the battery and re-insert it, but on other forums people with a 'fried' emmc chip can at least boot their phone, mine is just completely un-responsive, with a black screen and nothing, when you put it on charge. Am I right or could you shed some light on the problem?
Thanks

Seems to me exactly like the freeze I and a bunch of others are suffering from. If you think you can take the risk, you could try pulling the battery.
1. Connect to PC first.
2. Pull battery.
3. Pull USB cable
4. Insert battery after few minutes
5. Try to reboot recovery with adb
As I said there is a chance of freezing your emmc. You might succeed, but you might totally brick your phone too. I'm not responsible, I told you the risk..
Sent by my fingers to your head.
I had a spare battery lying around, did what you said above, instead putting the other battery in and not going on adb, but nothing happened. I think I am going to have to try what you said above ^^^
Oh and once I have put the battery back in do I turn the phone on? It might sound stupid but I don't want to get it wrong :/
Alright a few details:
My phone connected to the computer with a battery in (I don't have a clue how full it is) is not recognised as a 'device with removable storage'
It won't charge (or the orange light won't come on)
Yes, to see if it's booting, I would suggest to turn it on
As I said, try to reboot via adb.
And I would recommend to reboot into recovery and flash another ROM or backup, you don't want to freeze your phone again today, do you?
Sent by my fingers to your head.
I've taken my bay out and am just waiting a few minutes :/
Alright it seemsbe booting, could be a boot loop though
Edit : it's working I'm on the home screen of cm9
You don't know how much I love you right now thanks so much for all the help (I didn't even need adb, it just booted normally 0.o)
Keep your fingers crossed
Edit: glad you already solved it.
You're welcome mate

As I said, overvolt by 25 to hopefully prevent the phone from freezing again.
Or simply do flash a stable ROM. I would prefer this as I don't like to freeze my phone and brutally pull the batt

I'm trawling through pages and pages of ROMs I think I will stick to stable ones now
If you want sense, try endymion, by far the best.

But did you try VolumeUp + VolumeDown + Power button combination.
Which can often reboot a hung/stuck phone?
Well I think I finally bricked my Nexus S. What's weird is that it's been working fine. Had JellyBro 20120817 installed for the past few days with no issues. Last night I plugged my phone in to charge and went to bed. Woke up this morning and clicked the power on button to see what time it is and it showed just fine. 20 minutes later I went to check the time again and NOTHING. Pulled battery, tried every button combo, everything. My wife has a Nexus S also, so I tried her battery with the same results. No lights, vibrations, nothing. Plugged it into my computer to see if I could get any response and still nada. Tried Fastboot and device is not found. UGH. If anyone can give me any advice on what to try feel free to chime in. I've been around long enuff to realize that I'm pretty sure it's toast. Either way... it's been a nice run.

No it doesn't show as charging at all. Won't find device in adb, no lights, no vibration when trying to power on, nothing. It does get warm when the battery is in it tho. And it is discharging somehow, because I tried my battery in my wifes phone and it showed 33 % when I know it had a full charge before it died. GNex is on its way.

Same Problem here. It was working fine on jelly bean and rooted with clock work recovery. I removed the battery out to change the sim and now it wont power on, fastboot doesn't work and the USB JIG also doesn't work, doesn't show the charging animated when plugged in.
i tried AdamOutlers Resurector tool, it didnt detect the phone, so i made the hardware mod and now it detect the phone, but still dead after the tool loads the files. but when i choose GALAXY S from the drop down menu, the tool and the phone, both shows download mode, heimdall detect the phone but doesnt work as it is not a GALAXY S.
At least now you have a reason to upgrade. But that sure sucks, if you still want to revive it you could give this a shot... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ecp8jKmm48k
Three people with Nexus S's with Jelly Been roms just spontaneously get bricked phones? Just flashed mine to CM10 Nightly yesterday...
Hmmmm
I'm not sure if I would call mine a true bricking since most bricks happen directly from a rom flash. Mine was actually working fine for a couple of days after my last flash and then suddenly stopped working. It was an almost 2 year old phone and heavily abused internally with almost daily rom/kernel flashes and overclocking. I think maybe it just got tired LOL. Oh well...we have 2 other Nexus S's in our house, so now we have a decent parts phone since externally the phone is flawless.
Try cleaning your the phone's usb slot with a toothbrush and medical alcohol. also after removing your battery, try pressing the power button for 10 Secs(without battery) this cleans any extra charges in your phone. Gd luck!
Sounds more like hardware failure than bricking.

i had flashed the latest bootloader and 4.1 once it came out , but then i back to 4.0.4 and decided wait for AOKP JB.
and , my phone was also unable to power up after i pull out and change a new battery ! , first of all i was thinking battery's unstable output current damaged hardware or something , but now i am more convinced it should be the problem of bootloader as i read before
Hey all, I just got through with this hurricane sandy business and now I find my phone not working at all. First off I'd like to say that there is no water damage to this phone and it is NOT rooted. The problem is that it just won't turn on at all, and won't charge when I try to charge the device. The day before I charged the phone and it worked fine. I can provide more details if needed but I need to find a solution to this.
Did it run down on battery completely before it did this? You might need to charge it for a bit before it turns on. Also, see if you can get your hands on a spare battery to see if it's the battery's problem. I would also try removing the battery and putting it back just to make sure it wasn't jostled loose.

Two days ago I completely let the battery drain on its own because it was draining faster than usual and I was using it very minimally due to the lack of phone signal during the power outage. And yesterday I charged it until it was 100% in the morning and at night I charged it again until 100%. Before I went to bed, I turned off my phone and it was 90% and when I turned it on in the morning it was at 77% (which I thought was weird since the phone was not even on). Now the phone will not work at all. I took the battery out and everything. I even tried turning the phone on while trying to charge it (but it would not charge). The only feedback I got was that it vibrated when I tried turning it on this afternoon and after that was nothing. (it would either get stuck at the AT&T bootup part or I would get no display at all)

Nothing I can think of. It was fully charged by 9PM the other night and shut off before I went to bed. Next morning the batter is nearly halfway drained for no apparent reason. I think I will get another battery to test.
Also I let the battery sit out of the phone for a few days now and the phone still does not work.

Get a hold of a charged battery, then after 1 hour with no battery in the device, replace the battery remove the SD-Card and the SIM-Card, replace all covers. Reboot your PC and go to firewall tab in the control panel and turn of your firewalls, then reboot your PC, then using USB data cable not a charging cable.. with your device being OFF conect to a USB connection in the back of your PC, if it's a laptop use the one next to the intranet connection. Then wait about 1min. If nothing happwned, hold the volume down button then press and release the power button. if nothing happened, hold the volume up then press and release the power button. If nothing happened do the samething this time by holding both up and down volume buttons. If nothing happened with your device connected to the PC go to MY Computer tab right click on C>Properties then go to tools click on check disc tab check mark both options then restart your PC. Before windows tour OS starts, your PC will go through a self check. let it do its thing. it takes a couple of hours. then after its down check to see if it has seen your device. if not then do procedures above once again. GOOD LUCK.

I am having a similar problem with my HTC Inspire, here is my story. I bought it like it a year ago, the first thing I do was to rooted with AAHK and install CyanoyenMod cm-7-20130301-NIGHTLY-ace. Everything works just fine till a couple of months ago. One night I just leave my Inspire and go to sleep, the next morning I wasn't able to turn on, not charging, not turn on. Was not the battery because my brother has another Inspire and I check with his battery. I just leave the phone without the battery and Sim and SD for a day and them come back again, but at next day the same occurs. I try all that time, vol down+power. voldown+volup, every convination but nothing works. So I decide to dissensambly my phone... in the process I broke the ribbon flex cable http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-HTC-Desire-HD-Inspire-4G-Camera-Socket-Keypad-Membrane-PBC-Ribbon-Flex-Cable-/320925341841?pt=US_Cell_Phone_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item4ab8a41891 The phone was in parts on my table like a month till I was able to buy and recieve the ribbon (I live in Colombia). Finally the ribbon arrives 3 days ago, so I assembled the phone again and...magic! the phone turns on. My next step was install the Mustaavalkosta Rom that I mentioned before.... but, yesterday, my phone was dead again. So a try all steps again, put out the battery, Sim and Sd... and again try all the combinations of buttons, but nothing works... So I do it again: dissensably again my phone: Only disconnecting the display doesn't works... I have to disconect the display and the ribbon cable, assembled again and just turn on again.... Now I am waiting for the next black out...
I know is a weird behavior, but may be some one can point me in some direction to fix it.. I am not a developer or anything like that, but I like to investigate and solve problems... any help will be wonderful.
Cheers!
PD: I dont have any apps installed, just trying the Rom as it is.
PD: The next time it happens I will try the niavaran advises.
hey everyone, I have an issue with my girlfriend's HTC Sensation
The phone is almost 3 years old now, and its been acting up lately. It was slow, would freeze from time to time and the general responsiveness was crappy.
She played some game, during which the phone turned itself off, and after a while it would get hot (heating issue). After that it would no longer turn on, the LED doesnt turn on when its charging (or should be at least) and theres no way to enter bootloader/recovery/boot it up. ADB doesnt detect it either.
The LED turned on yesterday while charging and the phone booted up until the HTC logo, then it turned itself off again.
what could be the issue? dead battery or CPU? the battery is also quite old, probably a year+ and it wouldnt last 2 hours on full charge.

if you have a second battery use it and see if you can access the OS/bootloader

I unfortunately dont have a spare battery, I was telling her to get a new one because this one isnt gonna last much longer but she wouldnt listen - it's not my phone so I didnt get another battery. When the usb is plugged in the LED doesnt turn on anymore, I cant really get it to boot up or anything. it only happened once

I only took a fast look, but it says it'll work only for devices bricked by S-ON, the phone was rooted and running CM10.1, she doesnt know how to mess around with software.

yes probably you are right
maybe you won't have any luck with this method
i don't know what else to suggest
the only thing i can tell you is to use a second battery if you can find one
edit: did you check if the battery fits correctly?
