So I spent some time searching and looking around on the forums and couldn't seem to find an answer (for starters, everything was about TVs), so here we go:
I am trying to hook my TF up to a 1080p capable 25" computer monitor via HDMI. The picture shows up, but it seems to be a much lower resolution just blown up to fit the 1920x1080 size (possible the native 1280x800). I notice that when the TF switches to HDMI mode, a small black bar appears along the bottom, which I presume auto-corrects it to 1280x720 for 720p output. However, while playing GTA III, I notice that on the computer monitor, everything looks quite pixelated, much worse than an actual 720p signal. I also tested watching a TV episode I have stored on a microSD card using MX Video Player and the video resolution on the computer monitor was just as bad as GTA III.
Is there any way to get the TF to output an actual 720p signal (or even a 1080p signal if possible)?
Bump
Nobody's tried connecting to a computer monitor? I don't have an HD TV to test with
I have an older TV without an HDMI port. Is there a way to stream video from my phone to the TV?
I believe this should do the trick:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HDMI-3-RCA-RGB-A-V-Component-Conversion-Cable-Male-/170659070304
And then you need MHL adapter for the phone:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-MHL-Micro-USB-HDMI-Female-Cable-Adapter-HTC-Samsung-S2-/150867197550
EDIT:
Now that I think of it Iam not sure how well thats going to play out. Its very likely that the resolution the phone puts out is too high and the image will be strecthed out of the screen.
My Surface will connect to two Insignia TV's and work great but when I connect to a Samsung TV it does not detect the TV on my Surface at all. Any ways you know to fix this? Thanks.
Won't work for me on my LG either. This seems to be a common problem
Works on my LG, but no sound output. It just plays on my Surface speakers.
I don't really care about the sound working part I really want the video to work. I don't get why it doesnt on certain TVs.

Try another tv or cable. I had a problem with the adapter sold from ms store. Im using a micro-hdmi / hdmi cable now and its working fine. Btw i have an old lg tv/monitor that doesnt get sound but its not a problem with the surface, this tv won't work with sound with any of the computers I tried (4 in total counting surface).

I did try two other TV's and they did work, I just don't understand why my Samsung TV won't work.
Check your HDMI feed settings on Samsung

Depending on the model of TV you can control the HDMI feed settings to accept Native image size and feed. I had issues on my Samsung TV and was able to resolve them in the menu, HDMI settings portion of the menu.

Thanks I will look into this.

720P Not compatible resolution
I have a somewhat older (5/6 years old) Sony Bravia LCD tv, that is 1080i, and 720p hd support. It is old, and only has 1 hdmi port, and the settings in the tv do not give me any HDMI options - therefore I cannot ask the TV to accept the native resolution. When I plug in my surface, and try to use it, the start screen comes up, live tiles update, etc. but I cannot launch any apps. I get an error that my resolution is not supported (720p).
I have tried to mirror, extend, and only use only the 2nd monitor - all get me the same error. I open the resolution settings, and it doesn't allow me to switch the resolution on the 2nd monitor.
Is there any hope - or should I just bite the bullet and get a VGA adapter?
I really don't want to spend 1500$ on a tv just because my surface wont mirror to the screen. I just for the life of me cannot figure out why MS wouldn't support native 720p resolution - considering there are probably 10's of millions of TV's that utilize that HD format.
This is the first major fail in my book for this device. Other than this, still loving it.
1) Don't buy Samsung crap
2) For sound, go to Desktop > Right click on volume > playback device > Select HDMI and click by default > Then restart the app which was using sound (if it was opened).

Thanks - I saw that - My TV only has one HDMI, so switching the port obviously isn't the issue.

You need and you must have a 768p minimum. Check which resolutions your Surface supports in settings.

Yes, I know, I just don't understand why MS would do this considering the 1000's of devices out there that max out at 720p. Either way, I ordered a VGA adapter, and will see how that works. Anyone know if I need to buy the MS one, or can I just get any MicroHDMI to VGA off of amazon?

Press win + p and select second monitor only, it'll output to 1080p and all tvs will work. Some tvs won't accept the surfaces native red over hdmi. U can also use desktop display settings to 1280x720 if U want mirroring.
Mine works on all of my TV's, but my damn HDMI port has to be forced too work

really marco dont buy samsung crap... Samsung tv's are great. Also fyi it works fine on my samsung 1080p tv except the audio but im not using the tv for its audio so.
I'm having a problem with the output resolution on my AT&T HTC One X when I connect it to my Sony Bravia KDL-32BX300.
The output resolution when connected is 1080/24hz. This makes gaming with this set up next to impossible since the frame rate is locked at 24.
What I want to happen is for the resolution to be 720/60hz which is a possible output on the MHL adapter.
My device's native resolution is 1280x720 which is why I'm confused that my TV is outputting 1080/24p video.
If anyone can find a way to edit my TV or device to output at 720p I would greatly appreciate it. No online fixes have proven helpful.
I have no clue where the perfect forum section for this would be so I do it here and hope people find it.
Especially Nvidia devices seem to suffer from a problem that can drive you nuts if you are a power user.
But I had the issue with a few other chipsets and amps as well.
The problem seems to always look like this:
After some use you put your device in sleep mode, turn the TV/monitor off and when you want to continue there is no sound.
All drivers and hardware seem to perform normal and nothing you do bring the sound back until you restart.
Usual recommendations from the web, Nvidia forums, MS and dedicated tech sites include:
Installing a different driver
Using full featured and quality cables
Searching for drivers and services that might interfere
Getting new graphics card or upgrading the TV/monitor
None of the above really works or makes and difference if you ask me.
The fix on many modern TV's is simple and some monitors should have similar settings available.
For me the trick works like this:
Check the HDMI setting on the TV/monitor.
For the affected input you are likely to find something to change/activate/de-activate HDMI 2.0.
Usually this setting is set to auto mode and the system should use the right setting once a HDMI device connects.
And there is the culprit of the implementation for (mostly) Nvidia devices!
Sound will be activated after a video signal is established but the card will do the HDMI settings after establishing the video.
In the meantime the sound part fails to initialise.
Changing the TV HDMI setting from AUTO to anything else will fix the issue.
Of course it makes sense to first check if your device fully supports and uses HDMI2.0, if so enable it otherwise disable it on the TV.
Now, when coming from sleep the sound shouls always be active.
What exactly happened and why does it work?
HDMI2.0 mainly provides a higher bandwidth, so all quality HDMI1.4 cables and equippment will work just fine.
But to make it work both ends must use the same standards.
Some chipsets like Nvidia like to negotiate the standards for best possible performance.
This goes something like that:
Graphic system is activated
Check for HDMI connection, multiple standards supported
Set resolution as reported from the TV
Enable sound
Check HDMI standard and if HDMI is supported switch from 1.4 to 2.0.
The last step here is what messes things up.
It seems that even if the standard remains unchanged the sound will be initialised again but fails to know where to go.
If the HDMI settings on the TV are fixed instead of being set to AUTO it goes like that:
Graphic system is activated
Check for HDMI connection, fixed setting
Switch to the set HDMI standard
Set resolution as reported from the TV
Enable sound
A tiny difference in the approach and the sound finally knows where to go
Special case, amplifiers...
For Nvidia the same problem happens if you have an amp connected for better sound.
There are different ways to connect an amp these days.
Sometimes the amp passes the HDMI signla through and hijacks the audio signal only.
Sometimes you use a dedicated output from your device for the amp.
And in rare cases you feed the amp back from the TV with a dedicated amp output.
The possible options for failure are a bit higher as you can imagine by the number of combinations.
Either way the approach is the same.
If you can change the HDMI settings on the amp then check there first.
After all it could be that the amp tries to negotiate the right standard.
If not then again check on the monitor/TV and change the HDMI setting from auto to something else.
If you use a dedicated sound output on your device, even if it is optical, then please make sure it is set as the default audio output.
Even better, if you only use the amp for sound and make no use of the sound coming over HDMI then disable the sound for HDMI completely.
This way the HDMI output won't get priority or be mixed in, which can often cause crackling sound.
