So I spent some time searching and looking around on the forums and couldn't seem to find an answer (for starters, everything was about TVs), so here we go:
I am trying to hook my TF up to a 1080p capable 25" computer monitor via HDMI. The picture shows up, but it seems to be a much lower resolution just blown up to fit the 1920x1080 size (possible the native 1280x800). I notice that when the TF switches to HDMI mode, a small black bar appears along the bottom, which I presume auto-corrects it to 1280x720 for 720p output. However, while playing GTA III, I notice that on the computer monitor, everything looks quite pixelated, much worse than an actual 720p signal. I also tested watching a TV episode I have stored on a microSD card using MX Video Player and the video resolution on the computer monitor was just as bad as GTA III.
Is there any way to get the TF to output an actual 720p signal (or even a 1080p signal if possible)?
Bump
Nobody's tried connecting to a computer monitor? I don't have an HD TV to test with
I have an older TV without an HDMI port. Is there a way to stream video from my phone to the TV?
I believe this should do the trick:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HDMI-3-RCA-RGB-A-V-Component-Conversion-Cable-Male-/170659070304
And then you need MHL adapter for the phone:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-MHL-Micro-USB-HDMI-Female-Cable-Adapter-HTC-Samsung-S2-/150867197550
EDIT:
Now that I think of it Iam not sure how well thats going to play out. Its very likely that the resolution the phone puts out is too high and the image will be strecthed out of the screen.
My Surface will connect to two Insignia TV's and work great but when I connect to a Samsung TV it does not detect the TV on my Surface at all. Any ways you know to fix this? Thanks.
Won't work for me on my LG either. This seems to be a common problem
Works on my LG, but no sound output. It just plays on my Surface speakers.
I don't really care about the sound working part I really want the video to work. I don't get why it doesnt on certain TVs.

Try another tv or cable. I had a problem with the adapter sold from ms store. Im using a micro-hdmi / hdmi cable now and its working fine. Btw i have an old lg tv/monitor that doesnt get sound but its not a problem with the surface, this tv won't work with sound with any of the computers I tried (4 in total counting surface).

I did try two other TV's and they did work, I just don't understand why my Samsung TV won't work.
Check your HDMI feed settings on Samsung

Depending on the model of TV you can control the HDMI feed settings to accept Native image size and feed. I had issues on my Samsung TV and was able to resolve them in the menu, HDMI settings portion of the menu.

720P Not compatible resolution
I have a somewhat older (5/6 years old) Sony Bravia LCD tv, that is 1080i, and 720p hd support. It is old, and only has 1 hdmi port, and the settings in the tv do not give me any HDMI options - therefore I cannot ask the TV to accept the native resolution. When I plug in my surface, and try to use it, the start screen comes up, live tiles update, etc. but I cannot launch any apps. I get an error that my resolution is not supported (720p).
I have tried to mirror, extend, and only use only the 2nd monitor - all get me the same error. I open the resolution settings, and it doesn't allow me to switch the resolution on the 2nd monitor.
Is there any hope - or should I just bite the bullet and get a VGA adapter?
I really don't want to spend 1500$ on a tv just because my surface wont mirror to the screen. I just for the life of me cannot figure out why MS wouldn't support native 720p resolution - considering there are probably 10's of millions of TV's that utilize that HD format.
This is the first major fail in my book for this device. Other than this, still loving it.
1) Don't buy Samsung crap
2) For sound, go to Desktop > Right click on volume > playback device > Select HDMI and click by default > Then restart the app which was using sound (if it was opened).

Thanks - I saw that - My TV only has one HDMI, so switching the port obviously isn't the issue.

You need and you must have a 768p minimum. Check which resolutions your Surface supports in settings.

Yes, I know, I just don't understand why MS would do this considering the 1000's of devices out there that max out at 720p. Either way, I ordered a VGA adapter, and will see how that works. Anyone know if I need to buy the MS one, or can I just get any MicroHDMI to VGA off of amazon?

Press win + p and select second monitor only, it'll output to 1080p and all tvs will work. Some tvs won't accept the surfaces native red over hdmi. U can also use desktop display settings to 1280x720 if U want mirroring.
Mine works on all of my TV's, but my damn HDMI port has to be forced too work

really marco dont buy samsung crap... Samsung tv's are great. Also fyi it works fine on my samsung 1080p tv except the audio but im not using the tv for its audio so.
When I connect my Atrix 2 to a full regular 1080p computer monitor via an HDMI cable, regardless of whether I choose Webtop or Mirror Mode, it is clear that the resolutuon being output is only 720p, even when I choose 1920x1080 in the Display/Resolution settings.
A website such as:
http://www.whatismyscreenresolution.com
...reports 1280x720 resolution through all browsers, text looks blocky and fuzzy and out of focus, and furthermore threads like this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1959614
...regarding the original Atrix but equallyu applicable to the A2, confirm that only 720p is ever output by the chipset and HDMI port, regardless of what the user selects under Settings.
So my question, is there any sort of fix or patch or hack than can change this and enable true 1920x720 output resolution, in either Webtop, Mirror Mode or both? Alternatively, is there a way to change the DPI on the fly when connecting an HDMI cable, so as to get the next best possible result?
I am aware that ROMs like Paranoid Android can enable DPI-change on the fly, however PA-based ROMs also do not have HDMI-out working at ALL for the Atrix 2, so that just isn't an option.
Any help is appreciated, thanks!
