hey guys. i have external HDD which is over 500GB and i want it to connect to my xperia mini pro (rooted and bootloader is locked) i have searched the net and i found and about the OTG cable however i also read that you need power the HDD and phone is not enough to do it alone. I have researched that you would need external power supply. My question is what can i possibly use. i would prefer to buy some adapter/cable if something similar exists rather than experiment to make it myself.

I read about few kernels offering USB OTG support and we need a externally powered keyboard or mouse to use it. How does it work with USB flash drives? Can we access data from that or do we need externally powered flash drives for it? Sorry if the question is stupid, yesterday was the first time i knew this was even possible in nexus s
They need to be powered from somewhere else, generally through a USB Y cable of some sort. Some devices require external power AND some power from USB, and this will again require the Y cable. Quite a pain considering the negligible power needed to run a USB, but then again the Nexus S wasn't expected to have even this much functionality anyway.

It should be 5 v dc i believe at 1000ma.
Apparently someone have had success with a 128gb HDD... No external power needed...
waiting for a case then will try with my new 128gb SSD...
Hi guys
I was just wondering if i will need extra power if I want to connect my nexus 5 to a portable hard drive via OTG? If there are any that don't need extra power, what are they? I'm in the UK thanks.

A portable hard drive will need external power. Don't know any that don't. The power draw is too high for the device to handle it.

I have a 250GB Western Digital Passport, 1TB Samsung M3 and a 500GB DIY portable HDD I made with an old laptop drive and USB 3.0 enclosure from eBay... and none of them require an external power supply as they're all USB powered.
Also, when I had a Note 2 I could connect these drives to it... so whilst I can't say for sure they will work with the N5, I don't think it should be ruled out.
I'm at work right now and have no idea where my USB OTG cable is, but if I can find it when I get home I'll test them out.
Since the S3, all flagship Samsung have been able to power OTG Mechanical HDD's.
On the N5, many will not power however recently a few people have said they have managed to do so, but whatever. Generally the advice with the N5 is you need a powered USB hub. Some may work without but we dont have a catalogue of what works.
I'd really appreciate that CitizenLee. The Samsung M3 was the portable hard drive I was thinking of buying and I would be great to know first hand.

Hi XDA DEVELOPERS,
I have a problem with my Android Phone's USB OTG, lately it can read USB's around 16GB and Below, and now there's seems a problem in reading the USB (I've Tried almost the possible things that might help, inserting USB's through USB OTG in my phone with 2,4,8,16GB of Capacity, to card reader with inserted microSD, Executing "init.usb.rc" using Root Explorer but nothing seems to work). In some case the phone still supplies power to the USB as the USB's L.E.D Blinks.
Do you think there's a System Bug/Problem in my phone? Or the power might have gone low to supply the USB? Or Else, any virus that modified my system ,???
Could anyone Help me with my problem?please? This is really frustrating as I do really need USB in our School (my Memory Card is always on Capacity Shortage so I always deal with my USB)
And last, if anyone also do have an idea about android tweaking for my phone to be able to read a 32GB USB, please reach me THANKS!!!

Hi. I recently purchased a 1TB Samsung 990 pro SSD along with Asus TUF SSD enclosure.
I'm trying to use it with my S22 ultra and galaxy tab s8 ultra but something weird is happening.
When I connected the drive to my S22 ultra using a type c to type c cable, the drive worked properly.
But when I removed it and tried using it the second time, it doesn't work. I don't know what's happening but looks like a power supply issue.
Now the strange part is that if I connect the drive to a laptop/pc and then I connect it to my mobile, it starts working again. But as soon as I unmount and remove it from my mobile, it stops working again after that.
So every time I have to use the drive with my mobile or tab, I have to connect it first to a laptop/pc/power bank and then use it with my mobile.
Is there anyone else who has faced this issue? Also, does anyone know about an adapter which allows me to connect an external power supply to the drive and also to my mobile simultaneously? Like a type c splitter adaptor. I don't know what is it called exactly. But I want to be able to supply external 5V power to the drive while connecting it to my tab or mobile.
Thanks

Why? It's working totally fine with my laptop. Doesn't look like an SSD issue. Seems like a power supply issue only.
There are USB C adapters of the type you are looking for available at Amazon. Some of these adapters are quite useful and provide connections for monitors, providing connectivity for video via USB C in addition to providing power for an external drive like you are looking for. In addition, some even provide slots for SD memory cards and are great to have in one’s toolbox for when the need arises.
