Usb otg isn't working - General Questions and Answers

Hi XDA DEVELOPERS,
I have a problem with my Android Phone's USB OTG, lately it can read USB's around 16GB and Below, and now there's seems a problem in reading the USB (I've Tried almost the possible things that might help, inserting USB's through USB OTG in my phone with 2,4,8,16GB of Capacity, to card reader with inserted microSD, Executing "init.usb.rc" using Root Explorer but nothing seems to work). In some case the phone still supplies power to the USB as the USB's L.E.D Blinks.
Do you think there's a System Bug/Problem in my phone? Or the power might have gone low to supply the USB? Or Else, any virus that modified my system ,???
Could anyone Help me with my problem?please? This is really frustrating as I do really need USB in our School (my Memory Card is always on Capacity Shortage so I always deal with my USB)
And last, if anyone also do have an idea about android tweaking for my phone to be able to read a 32GB USB, please reach me THANKS!!!

[Q] G Tablet Reboot with External HDD

Hello,
I thought I'd try and see if anyone else is having a similar issue.
I recently picked up a western digital 500GB passport external hard drive.
I formatted the hard drive to fat32 and double checked there are no extra partitions on the drive.
I'm mostly running CyanogenMod 7 with stock kernal lately and I've found when I hook up the hard drive, the tablet stutters a bit and then reboots.
On bootup it gets to the unlock screen, and when it starts scanning the sd card, the scanning message starts to cycle quickly and the tablet reboots again.
I restored to a backup of vegan5.1 to test on it. Same thing, on insert the tablet starts to hang and reboots.
On vegan though, on the next reboot, it would start normally, but for some reason its not mounting the drive. I search under usbdrive and don't see the folder and file i put on it for testing.
Anyone else having issues like this? Could the problem be its a 2.5" drive and no external power? I know when its hooked up, the light comes on and I can feel the drive spin up and vibrating, so not sure whats going on.
Thanks for the help
That (not enough power) sounds exactly like what's happening, I.e., the drive is drawing so much current from USB that it's either causing voltage to the gtab internals to drop to the point that it resets.
Jim
If this is the case, does anyone know what 2.5" external hdd's will work with the power requirements? (Someone who has one that does work?)
You could always get a powered USB hub, provided that isn't too inconvenient to carry around.'
Edit - Most 2.5" external drives that didn't require external bricks that I have seen have a 2 prong USB adapter. One for data and power and the other for more power only, since each port maxes out at around 500mW I think. Obviously we have only one port, so a powered hub or a jury rig.

I think others have gotten some drives to work, but not sure if they were 500gb. Also, even w a specific model, if the current draw or voltage are just 'on the edge's of working/not working, you may or may not get lucky.
BTW, have you tried w a thicker/heavier USB cable? Thinner/smaller gauge wire has more resistance, so voltage drop would be less over a shorter, heavier gauge cable than over a longer, smaller gauge cable. I have actually had drives not work, then switched to a thicker USB cable then it worked.
Jim
On a similar note, just yesterday I purchased an external USB DVD+/-RW for use with my netbook and tablet and it would not work without a powered hub between the tab and the DVD.
My 160GB ipod classic works fine, but my 1TB external drive that has an external power source doesn't work with any of the ROMs.
Does anybody know the maximum current supplied by the GTab's USB host port?
My 2.5" 500 GB External came with only a short (single) usb A to usb mini cable.
And it gets powered up fine from every laptop/netbook I have tried. They have always displayed 500 mA max current for each port.(when I look in Windows Device Manager, USB Root Hub).
Can the G-Tab supply up to 500 mA from it's USB host port??
I want to make sure it will work on a GTab before I buy it.
confirmed working external HD on g tablet
Using tnt lite 4.2.4, i personally have a 500gb formatted in fat32 working
model 500gb free agen go flex.
I've tried the latest WD passport SE, spun up and didnt detect in astro, ES file explore or stock file viewer
i have over 100gigs on this drive, about 80 of music and some Tosh.0 and everything pops up instantly and runs all the music fine out of MORTY music player... plays perfectly. Must have for your powerhouse. Hope this answers all the unanswered questions about external HD's on g tablet.
I have not tried stock rom or any other roms.
If you are looking for different external hard drives... make sure they are LOW POWER and NOT 3.0. 3.0 seems to require a driver to work. So its kinda hard to walk into a store and buy 2.0 only devices now.
Goodluck all.... i was using a patriot xt 64gb rage flash drive before this but 130 bucks is outrageous vs 75 i paid for the 500gb seagate.

[Q] How to enable UMS/Mass storage mode??

Yesterday I made a custom usb Y cable and connected it to a USB OTG adapter to our phone and supplied a external +5v power then connected USB keyboard and mouse both worked.
But when i tried connecting my pen drive it did not shown any sign of life.
I searched and narrowed these methods:
http://www.chinadigitalcomm.com/how-to-mount-usb-flash-drives-t1865.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334444
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=997187
According to these two methods I should get sda1 and sda 2 in dev/block after connecting a USB pen drive but that is not happening.
Then I searched and found out that our kernel should have UMS enabled to mount any usb storage device as stated here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22597744&postcount=3
I am really confused now, I know I have enabled USB Host mode as usb mouse and keyboard are working but dont know how to modify our kernel to get usb pen drive work.

you won't be able to modify our kernel with our locked bootloader, but your problem could be elsewhere. the drive requires more power than a mouse or keyboard, so it just may not be getting enough. will your power supply give a full 500mA that is what a normal usb port gives, and is probably overkill for a flash drive, but it would prove whether that is the problem or not.
Does the drive have a light on it that usually turns on when you plug it in? if so, does it come on when you plug it in with your splitter into the phone.
It may be that it is just not supported on our phone, but I think a power problem is much more likely.
EDIT: once you think it is getting power, check for it in /dev/block by running this in terminal emulator. you can check before and after to see what changes, if anything in case it is not named /sdxx
Code:
ls /dev/block

That is right, our phone does not provide power on the usb connection, it is a one way charge only, no matter which cable you use, it is an issue with moto's implementation of the USB protocol.
---EDIT---
I do think that I read that someone was able to get it working by using a powered usb hub attached in between the A2 and the usb device. WARNING some assembly/dis-assembly was required!

devices do work as long as you provide external power, which is what he has done. basically you cut the power wires out of the cable and hook them up to a power supply, thus givng the power and giving the data to the phone. Since it supports host mode, it SHOULD work with a flash drive as well as mice, I have heard of people doing it.

I know this does not explain it, but it is mentioned that a powered hub is needed.... This person was thinking of making basically a DIY HD doc, and there was someone else on here that has done it too, but I can't find that post and I can't remember the users name.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462541
A cheap hub will do the job much better, and I have heard of other users having trouble with the otg cable and usb storage.
Just more information to think about and look into.
Try this

Motorola lied and I'm still locked mb865
I've tried every single thing that I can to make Usb flash drive work but its something in our software that is restricting it detect any of my storage devices.
I saw one more thread yesterday it was for XOOM which says kernel has to be modified in order to get usb Drives work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068999
I now understand that with locked bootloader it will not be possible to modify the kernel so i am abandoning this project and hope we find a way to unlock bootloader soon in the future.
You can try by using a self powered hub which provide power to devices, If it works do post the results as I am also looking forward to use USB HOST feature

Ive done this. I have a powerd usb hub, otg cable hooked up and it does not recognize drives or mice. None of it is working. Beginning to think there is not a way to make this work.
It does work when you connect pen drive to lapdock so its not software/firmware/kernel issue.
Easy solution: buy a lapdock or a media dock with usb ports and connect your drive there.

I did finally get this to work.
One caveat, you have to connect the power directly from the cable to the otg cable. Basically power the hub and the otg cable from one line even though they are connected. This is what did the trick for me.
Ill post pictures when i can if its still foggy.

Update and edit. No automounting at all. Have to use an external program to mount. Been trying to debug this for a while but the OS is not seeing the usb device.
Using USB host diagnostics Android api does not detect the device. Although the claims and classes were found. Kernel is in the green here too. Unfortunitely this makes it so that the USB device cannot be used by 3rd party programs. Still working on figuring this out. I saw a post about shorting out the 4 and 5 line of the microusb cable. Going to try that see where it goes.

[Q] USB Adapter to work with ext hd

Hi,
I was curious if anyone got an ext hd to work with the usb adapter?
Everytime i plug it in, it tells me a "high powered ext hd" is connected but unable to read..i know it was made for usb sticks and keyboards etc but has anyone gotten ext hd to work?
Thanks!

I found my 1Tb Hitachi Touro was detected to start with but the power was insufficient to leave it on. It was not working after a few seconds of being plugged in. Memory sticks are no problem but the HDD sucked more power than the 10.1 wants to give...
Shame that an awesome tablet that runs rings around just about everything else falls short of my Acer Icona A501 for this...:crying:
I used a 1A externa battery to power an HDD and it worked just fine on the Note. The HDD was NTFS, but I used USB Mass Storage Watcher and mounted the partitions.
To get it ti power on you need a split USB/ power cable.
Yeah, my Acer A700 has this ability but unfortunately the Samsung Note doesn't have the power.
The fix is to buy a self-powered USB hub... Or use high capacity thumb drives.
Or use a hard drive with provisions for external power.
I plugged my ext powered hd but still no luck. Oh wells! Or maybe split line usb and ac like someone recommended
Thanks guys!

Split USB is your best bet. No hub needed, just an external source of power like a portable battery.
Yeah, but it bites my kickass up-to-date sammy tablet is put in its place by my 18 month old Acer Iconia A501 that supports the 1Tb 2.5" HDD with no problem.
I think this bites a bit. Makes life hard If I need more storage than most thumb drives supply...
No how am I supposed to take a veritable video store with me to watch....
If you could run an external hd via USB it would drain the battery pretty quickly.
Nope, get at least 6 hours of watching videos from the 1Tb hdd on the acer Iconia A501... The battery is not as beefy as the SGnote 10.1's either...
Just an oversite by samsung...
Just a pain now having to carry 2 tablets around...

It won't because the Note will not provide power to the HDD, you have to use external power.

[Q] Connecting external HDD to android device

hey guys. i have external HDD which is over 500GB and i want it to connect to my xperia mini pro (rooted and bootloader is locked) i have searched the net and i found and about the OTG cable however i also read that you need power the HDD and phone is not enough to do it alone. I have researched that you would need external power supply. My question is what can i possibly use. i would prefer to buy some adapter/cable if something similar exists rather than experiment to make it myself.

USB OTG keeps ejecting

Hello, anybody here with an Idol 3 that keeps ejecting flash drives plugged into the micro usb using a USB OTG cable? I have used 2 flash drives and 3 OTG cables and it still keeps on ejecting by itself. Thanks.
Are those flash drives within spec? If they draw more than 500 mA @ 5V, then they are NOT in spec and hence why the drives keep dropping out. Typically that means a USB 2.0 drive should be used. Or a OTG USB drive (I have one) since those have to be in spec otherwise their OTG usefulness goes out the window).
The same flash drives and otg cables worked with all my other phones so I don't think there's any problem with them. I ended up returning the phone since I was also having problems with crappy photos in low light. I have a zenfone 2 which is pretty comparable to this phone and the photos are better in low light plus no noticeable lag unlike with the idol 3. The only thing I really liked with the idol 3 were the stereo speakers which I'm missing right now.
I dont think this phones kernel supports otg. Says USB host diagnostics. BUELLER?
I tried otg also, in 9 of 10 cases, phone reject usb, in one case connections was achieved, and i can copy files from usb. But, even in that case, after some time, connection brakes. Annoying.
5.5 idol 3 android 5.0.2 .. I have used this phones OTG with flash drive, copy move paste all work and other usb devices also work.
My 5.5 idol 3 android 5.0.2 keeps ejecting USB disk CONFIRM
