[Q] Galaxy R LCD Repair - Samsung Galaxy R i9103

Sadly today i broke the front glass of my 1.5 year old galaxy R. I took it immediately to a Samsung Galaxy R SCC only to find out that they are charging in excess of INR 7000 to replace the digitizer of the galaxy R. I also approached other local mobile repair shops but they all are asking in excess of 4000 INR which I frankly think is too much to spend on 1.5 year device (despite the fact that i absolutely love my galaxy R). I then started searching online for the galaxy R digitizer and found a site called parts4repair.com . It seems to have an awesome inventory of galaxy R spare parts along with spare parts of other phones too. However i am confused as to whether i should trust this site as they are asking for 20$ including shipping which is quite less compared to what everyone else has quoted so far but still a large enough amount that i would not like to go to waste. Could anyone tell me of their past experiences of the site if anyone has ordered anything and also any other cheaper alternatives to repair my phone. The LCD which produces the image is fine but the front glass is cracked and doesn't respond to my touch anymore

How is that rather than addressing my problem you are more concerned about which category I should have posted in. When i post in XDA I am looking for help and not criticism of my actions. And if the Mod thinks it should be posted in the QA section then i am sure he will take the necessary action.

IMO you should get it repaired from local shop. doing this you will get it repaired in very short time and its better that an experienced person fits the screen rather than you do after buying online.

@vipul12389mehta is correct.
we have Mod that doesnot mean that we can post anything anywhere and let Mods sort all the threads in proper section.
Being a member of XDA you should follow rules and post it in correct section.
Post in proper thread next time onwards.

Hold you hand buddy. we know that you are in so much bad situation but please Dont be panic else this kinda reply will tend to stay away other users from this thread.
@vipul12389mehta buddy was just suggest a Rule not asked you to adhere to it strictly.
You may trust the site but have to ask site (using call or mail) that what kinda delivery they will do (Means courier services). also keep on tracking the courier when it will be ordered. Hope all will go well.

Maybe you can ask other fellow members by pm about what they did in similar situations

Best way is to buy a LCD with the front glass (because it is fused) and then replace it. If you can't do this, ask something who can. But disassemble is not very hard and I'm sure that u can do it yourself

hey buddy, what did you do finally? Sadly Im in the same boat as you were.. I accidentally dropped my phone and the screen has multiple cracks. only a small portion of the touch screen is working, rest is dead.

finally got my phone up and running again... bought the screen and lcd set for Rs 4600 and repaired it on my own ...

isn't it too much?

Not really, even online from China if I would order the LCD and glass kit it would have costed around 90usd..
And it turns out that many people are right, it's extremely difficult to separate just the glass from the LCD..its almost like its fused, so we need repair with the kit only...
The service center here quoted almost 8k, so I saved Rs 3000

In need of repair

Hey guys, my screen has a huge crack. It appears to be behind the actual glass though.
Its a refurbished phone, and its not under my name, the best I can find is like $180 to repair, if not more.
What can I do? Any services here? Running out of options....
Thank you for your reply

Your best option is to get a new screen off ebay and isntall it yourself. The avg price is about 150$ atm but has been as low as 80$.
There are quite a few videos (mobile tech video has one I believe) on how to do it.
I know this link isn't helpful to you now, I post it to show that occasionally a good price shows up for a captivate screen and digitizer.
~cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320684839256&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT~
I bought this a few weeks ago for my wife's captivate, and it was pretty easy to install with the help of some youtube videos.
This is the cheapest I can find today:
~cgi.ebay.com/LCD-Touch-Digitizer-Screen-AT-T-SAMSUNG-CAPTIVATE-i897-/260771750264?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cb7352178~
**** kall. Att said that u lost the phone and they will send u a new 1 that's what I did and just pay those 125 deductible.

Thanks for the reference guys. PM sent I actually do them for a little more than the cost of the assembly. I do the full digitizer/lcd for a professional repair with OEM parts.

Thats a good page but unfortunately they dont sell 1 piece items.... they supply in high quantities and only if you have a company that repairs/resells/etc phones... they ask for a series of data like business name and legal stuff... i remember i tried to purchase 1x samsung OEM battery cover... haha they basicly laughed at me saying i need to be a company and buy at least 10x.

also, when disassembling the phone to replace the housing, is the screen at risk of allowing dust particles in? or is the screen/digitizer sealed? one of my pet peeves is dust behind the screen

No, my brother in law got it, and frankly speaking it's not that much better than i9003. It is very good, but I will rather wait for next generation, unless I get some good bargain earlier.

Samsung Galaxy R is discontinued, so says Samsung outlets

I contacted Samsung's flagship outlet in India. They said that this product is not being manufactured anymore.
I guess Samsung stopped manufacturing this product. Could be the reason for price drop.
Even with enormous demand for this phone, I don't think they will restart manufacturing because they will be releasing Galaxy S III very soon and will start working on a cheaper variant of Galaxy S III
Maybe calling it a Galaxy R II or Galaxy S III SC-LCD.
That's a really heartbreaking news for me. I really expected this product to be available abundantly and many of the Devs to buy it.
That could've taken our device above the Optimus 2X in every aspect.
Anyway, I would say that this a one sweet sexy baby that we all got.
Hey, but there are some weird thoughts that is crossing my mind. Have you people checked Samsung India's Galaxy R page?
When we click on the link to buy it, it takes us to Letsbuy's website.
That's just a normal online shopping website.
Is there any chance that there is some exclusive deal between Samsung India and Letsbuy that Samsung are providing the stocks exclusively to Letsbuy?
If you check, Letsbuy is the only website that has Galaxy R in stock right now. That too at a price of 21k INR (420 US$)
Could the members from other countries comment about the availability in their respective countries?
Dude if you wanna buy this Phone try on ebay...its available.....also check in your near local stores....dont go to samsung outlets...
i got mine for 20500rs...a week ago frm a dealer....
That's a pretty decent deal that you got. The lowest at eBay India is at 23.5k INR
Out of stock on FlipKart,i think its the cheapest you can buy online for 21k
I bought this phone last Sunday for 21K and that guy sold 3 phones in front of me in few minutes.
It was the cheapest deal i found. This phone is really awesome
We have it in Russia about from $530 to $620 USD in internet stores and regular shops
But we are paying about $170 USD for russian goverment test mark inside
Its still easily available.. atleast on ebay
its been thr on "Deals of the week" from past few weeks...
It is available on eBay, a place where you are supposed to get at good prices. But it's at 23-24k minimum. There's a shortage for the device that's sure. I only have a doubt regarding the production status. Because Samsung stores and many of the dealers said so. I really hope that the device comes back to all the dealers and it is available adequately. More the people who own it ≈ More members in our community ≈ More developer support of it.

I guess the Dev's are gonna need all the help they can get from those owning the device. Chances of getting ROM's other than Infected are looking slim.
Sent from my GT-I9103 using XDA App
An AOSP port is in the works. If you ask me, if the ROMs are good, all that we require is 3 good ROMs for any device. One based on stock like Infected ROM, one CM and MIUI.
Actually, if the ROM is really good, having only 3 is the best. You wont be confused about which to choose. All the members of the community will provide more concentrated support. Having lots of ROMs could make you want to flash each and every ROM and updates to finalise which you like the most. It could take a toll on your social life. (www.xda-developers.com/announcements/do-you-have-obsessive-rom-updating-disorder-ord/)
The AOSP ROM might take a while to reach usable stage. I think that we wont be able to use conventional methods to port AOSP to Tegra devices. Once nVidia releases the ICS sources and the official ICS rolls out, we can expect a surge in the development.
Spain still sells R via the only carrier that has it. No prob at all.to buy it from carrier here, no probs of stock either

From little bit what I know of Marketing, it may be the case that Samsung Galaxy R is actually cannibalizing the sales of Galaxy S/Plus in India which still sell a lot, considering novice users dont know theadvantages between single/dual core processors. Samsung may want to push the sales of galaxy S/ S plus until stocks are out and then restart stocking Galaxy R. OR they may actually cease from selling Galaxy R in the Indian Market. The situation on Dev support would become apparent once its known whether other markets are going to discontinue Galaxy R also.
(Btw: Sammy, if you really did this then God bless Apple f**k you. If not, then let the hunter become the victim.)
Try Sulekha.com. I got it for less than 19k from there! It still sells around that price if you keep tracking (cycles price almost every day)

Really good post, It's not only marketing here though, I would even mention some microeconomics as well
i have read that many galaxy r owners are facing random shut down problems which might be due to hardware issues and also samsung may not wamt to keep this phone running in market for so long, that it would affect sales of other models like s2 and s plus

Does Samsung Galaxy tab 2 have a scratch resistant glass.?

I own a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 GT 3100 and I

the blogs mentioned that tab 310 uses
Samsung's patented scratch resistance glass
but on the other hand in many of the blogs it

Hopefully my doubts will be cleared in this

Not to be rude but everyone that has responded is a senior member. These forums are not a place to have people do your research for you. If anyone knew for sure they would have posted it already or they will when the time comes. If Samsung has even released the info then it can be found with a little bit of research. You could even send Samsung an email. If they give you no response then its something they are keeping a secret for now.

I do hope it is scratch resistant in some fashion... I have asked my local ghost armor vendor to get in some tab 2 10.1 screen protectors. The one on my galaxy nexus is perfect!
Well it's certainly not break resistant I've dropped my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, 7.0" from hip height onto the street, it hit the street first with the glass and that was it..
Now since the device still works, even the touchscreen still works well, I am trying to find a replacement glass. Does anybody know where I could find one?

Thanks for the links man!
I think I'll go with that one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Touch-Scree...y-Tab-2-P3100-P3110-P3113-Tools-/111051728473
They include a set of tools and are also quite cheap: 25$ with free shipping from china (every time I order something from there I wonder how it's possible that they can offer free shipping from china to europe, even for 5$ items)
On dx.com you can find 1-2$ items with free delivery... Chinese .
To make it more easily, watch disassembly P3100 videos on youtube.
Yes it has.
I have never used a screen protector ever since I bought mine november last year. the screen is still pristine and scratch less. i use it every and put it in my backpack. my 3 year old son even stepped on it screen side up and nothing happened. so the screen is as advertised by samsung.
FWIW I don't think it's gorilla glass because I can feel the extra drag. GG is more slippery, at least whatever kind is on my gs3.
I much prefer naked screens so will try to dissuade the wife from putting a screen protector on it.
