[Q] Is it mandatory to connect the charger with the HDTV Adapter ?

Hi Guys,
I've got my HDTV Adapter for a stock Galaxy Note 10.1, I'm a bit disappointed because it looks like it's mandatory to connect the charger (the cable already has got an extra slot for connecting the charger) in order to make the note send what it is displayed on its screen to the cable so I can see it on the computer screen for example.
Does anybody have an idea if this is true or not ? I'd love the idea if it is an option but not an obligation !!!!

My experience is yes, power is required. But this can be as easy as plugging in the usb to the tv or monitor if it has a usb port, you dont HAVE to use the charger

Well, let me tell you why I'm a bit disappointed, I used to have an iPad which used in a lot of meetings moving here in and there with my pad and cable, now I've to have a power source around or even a computer, with a at least two cables with/without a charger, I'm not bothered with that at home but while one business this note didnn't prove to be a stand-alone, I'm not sure if an app that may simulate charging can deceicve tthe note on that aspect or not but so far, this can be considered a draw-back

Best accessory purchase for Nexus 4

I've found a mini-usb to hdmi connector so you can plug in your Nexus 4 to your TV. I know Miracast is out there but I haven't read anything good about it yet for the Nexus 4, and this thing works really well. It's the slimport SlimPort® SP1002. High Speed micro USB (male) to HDMI (female) connector cable (4.26cm x 2.21cm x 0.99cm)-Supports Full HD and 3D at 1080p @60Hz, 24bpp.
And when I get the LG wireless charger from Puremobile, I'll never run out of batteries while streaming to the TV!

Unfortunately this drains the battery faster than you can charge it. I've been using this set-up for months.

Have you tried using a 2+ Amp charger?
the slimport adaptor is a very desirable accessory for sure; others (which i have acquired so far) include:
- to make up for the N4's weak battery, an external battery pack. i have the anker astro3 which can supply 10,000 mAh @ 2+ Amps -- never run out of juice again!
- to make up for lack of expandable storage, a wireless drive. i have the tiny pqi air drive which accepts sd cards up to 64gb.
- i also have an adonit jot stylus for precision note taking.
- Bluetooth keyboard. i have the igo stowaway which works perfectly.
- Bluetooth mouse. not been able to make one of these work as yet -- hopefully after 4.2.2 !
- to make up for low headphone volume, the tiny fiio headphone amp and finally, an x-mini II capsule speaker (or 2, for stereo!).
anything i've missed?

I'm also interested in a good stylus. (I bought a very cheap one, which as expected serves for nothing)

Are you talking about using the wireless charger like the OP mentioned? Or do you mean even plugging directly into the adapter?
Also, what's the power on the charger you're using?

I checked the USB port and found it's exactly same as my Note 2, so I suspect MHL 11 pin adapter will work with Note 8.0.
Has anybody tried yet?

My S3 adaptor works. I tried it out the other day. I assume that is the same adaptor for the Note 2.

Queries on connecting to a Projector
I too had a similar question, well now at least I know which adaptor to buy!
I am planning to buy the N5100 as soon as it is available(a couple of weeks in India).
I need to hook it up to a Projector so that it can mirror the Screen. Now a few questions:
The Projector only has VGA or RCA inputs. Would an HDMI to VGA converter have any problems with this setup? Would buy from eBay
The Projector has a native resolution of 800x600(SVGA). Which resolution does the Note 8.0 output at? Is it adjustable?(because I don't need 1080p)
Is the output stream from the Tablet exactly the same as that on the Tablet screen itself, or are some elements left out? If yes, which ones?

I bought a cheap one for 10 dollars and it worked pretty well.
Try rebooting the note after plugging it in, some people have had such problem.

Is it compatible with this adapter or there could be some problem with the samsung HDTV adapter

Is this an original adaptor from Samsung Or a Chinese compatible one?
MHL devices are compatible with all HDMI Inputs,The special compatible TV's can also power the adaptor eliminating the travel charger.
Try other HDMI inputs, if possible, other adapters or on other devices like some friend's s3

Its original Samsung for galaxy S3.
May be I will get it checked with samsung service center.

Make sure you use the note8 power supply to drive the hdmi adapter, my samsung mhl doesn't work with note8 when I use a lower power supply.

Won't work
I'm on my second HDMI adapter and I still cannot get my Note 8 working.
Am I supposed to change a device setting ot something.
Attached are the items I purchased.
Any ideas?

In an earlier post it was mentioned you must use the power supply from the 8.0. Are you doing that?
I just tested the one for my s3 and it works fine on my 8.0

No luck for me either and yes I am using the power supply that came with the note. The same adapter works with my S4. It uses an adapter to make it 11 pin. Between the very weak infrared remote and now this not sure I will be keeping this thing

Yes, I actually tried 3 different chargers, that's why I thought there must be a setting. I wonder if the type of HDMI cable is important ?

I didn't do anything special just plugged it in. Have you tried different TVs or different ports? Also do you get any reaction at all from the tv?
I bought mine from mono price for about 10 or 15 bucks.

Dang!
Why? Just tried my HML-adapter bought and working with the Samsung Note N7000 phone (the first Note phablet) but I can't get to work with the Samsung Note8 N5110 tablet.
The Note8 is signaling that it "got it in" and charging the battery but no picture on the TV.
The Note N7000 on the other hand, automatically sending the picture to the same TV, that Note8 fails.
Is there something that has to be changed in the settings on the Note8?

Seems like XDA member davp already had the answer for my question.
The SonyEricsson X10 Mini power adapter gave 0,5mAh while the Note 8s gives 2mAh ...Trying the Note8 adapter now.

MHL HDMI Adapter

Hey guys u was wondering about getting a MHL 2.0 adapter. I mistakenly ordered one from amazon that doesn't work(apparently Samsung uses a different pin arrangement?)
Will any GS3 mhl adapter work but still need an auxiliary charging port? Or is there a specific MHL 2 adapter that I will need?

The Galaxy S3 and Note 2 MHL adapter works. It will not charge your phone while it works, but it works. To charge your phone at the same time, you have to attach the charger to the MHL adapter.
The MHL adapter for the S2 will not work with the S3 or S4 unless you get the 5 pin to 11 pin connector.
The S4 MHL adapter (which is twice the price of the S3 one) will charge your phone when connected to the TV without an additional adapter. It also has a higher refresh rate (60) vs the S3's MHL adapter (24).
The S4 MHL adapter is also backwards compatible, but still needs a charger attached to it to charge your phone at the same time.
It all depends on your needs and your willingness to pay.

it works, you need a 5pin mhl adapter. (the one for galaxy s2)
it's pointless tho, you will get stuck at 1080p30 on full hd tvs, making it choppy for playing anything other than 30 fps videos

I've used a generic USB-HDMI cable with the Relay and it works. The Relay does NOT use Mini or Micro HDMI. It outputs HDMI over USB. This is called MHL. You can read about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-Definition_Link
The cable requires power to work. You must plug your charger into a passthrough port on the cable. The cable appears to have some active circuitry to get HDMI from the 4 pins of USB.

Any advice of where tu buy in UK?
Proper seller from ebay or amazon or any internet shop (bad experience with MHL cable from china, it's working somehow but discharging phone and sometimes no voice).
I've seen some Samsung cables for 99 pounds which is mad, I would like to spend about 10 or so...

the discharging is normal. apparently, it is very intensive for the phone, so much that it discharges while charging. as for the sound, dunno, may be a defective unit.
anyway, MHL 1.0 is crap. it's like the beta version of the thing. mhl 2.0 and slimport should work as intented, but right now only S4 and nexus 4 have them
