MHL HDMI Adapter - Galaxy S 4 Accessories

Hey guys u was wondering about getting a MHL 2.0 adapter. I mistakenly ordered one from amazon that doesn't work(apparently Samsung uses a different pin arrangement?)
Will any GS3 mhl adapter work but still need an auxiliary charging port? Or is there a specific MHL 2 adapter that I will need?

I am curious as well, ran across the same issue.

maybe this will help.

The Galaxy S3 and Note 2 MHL adapter works. It will not charge your phone while it works, but it works. To charge your phone at the same time, you have to attach the charger to the MHL adapter.
The MHL adapter for the S2 will not work with the S3 or S4 unless you get the 5 pin to 11 pin connector.
The S4 MHL adapter (which is twice the price of the S3 one) will charge your phone when connected to the TV without an additional adapter. It also has a higher refresh rate (60) vs the S3's MHL adapter (24).
The S4 MHL adapter is also backwards compatible, but still needs a charger attached to it to charge your phone at the same time.
It all depends on your needs and your willingness to pay.

Galaxy S4 (i9505G) MHL woes - which accessory(ies)?

So I went and did some research into this. Here's what I found so that others can avoid the issue that I ran into.
MHL is connection agnostic. It does not have a standard connector, which is both good and bad.
The original Galaxy S II MHL adapter was a 5-pin design. Samsung still sells it, but there is no point in buying it (keep reading)
Samsung HDMI Smart Adapter - $39.99
Later products, like the S3, Note II, and S4 use the 11-pin design. Samsung also sells an adapter for this, but again, not worth buying (keep reading).
Samsung MHL HDTV Smart Adapter (11 pin) - $39.99
For those using the old 5-pin design (or a monitor/HDTV with native MHL support and a 5-pin cable), Samsung sells a 5 to 11 pin converter, which is smaller than a thumb drive. This is worth buying if you already have the 5-pin cable(s). Otherwise, keep reading.
Samsung HDTV Adapter Tip (5 to 11 pin converter) - $9.99
Next up, Samsung now sells a universal kit, which is a combination of the 5-pin cable and the 5 to 11 pin converter. This is the best deal for those with mixed devices as it will work with anything, and costs the same as the single cables (best deal, this is why you kept reading!).
Samsung Universal HDTV Adapter (5-pin) w.5-pin to 11-pin MHL Conversion Tip - $39.99
Lastly, Samsung now sells the MHL 2.0 adapter. My understanding is that this will ONLY work with 11-pin devices, so mixed-device owners may want to stick with the 5-pin + converter combo. However, MHL 2.0 does a few advantages over the prior spec. MHL can only pass 0.5a to charge the device while in use. This isn't enough to sustain a charge in most cases given that the screen remains on, so the device will eventually run out of juice even when plugged in. MHL 2.0 nearly doubles this to 0.9a, which is enough to run and slightly charge the device in most cases. Also, MHL is limited to [email protected] MHL 2.0 does [email protected]
Samsung MHL 2.0 HDTV Smart Adapter - $39.99
Keep in mind that while the S3/Note 2 can use this adapter, those devices are not MHL 2.0 compatible, which leads to the other advantage of MHL 2.0. The S4, being MHL 2.0 compliant, can power the adapter, meaning that an external charger is not needed. For the S3 and Note 2, the external charger will still be needed, because while the adapter is MHL 2.0 compliant, these devices are not.
Here's some more information on the subject.

What you really need is this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYX0Q-E31yk
I know for a fact that one works. I got mine on ebay actually, and was worried it might not be legit but it works for my s4 on any hdmi tv, without having to connect external power.
This is the one I bought: http://www.ebay.com/itm/271221429430?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
Cheaper, seemingly same one and more importantly it says: "no external power source needed"
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MHL-2-0-AV-...Phone_PDA_Cables_Adapters&hash=item3f272962c4
I know it sucks, but I've been through multiple adapters and had problems with all of them. Only a genuine s4 mhl adapter worked for me in an acceptable manner.
Updated OP with better information.

eBay one works properly like genuine? 1080p at 60fps?
As far as I remember yeah. I'll plug it up again and test. I was more concerned with it working without needing an external power supply, which it does. I played a few games on it and it was working without any disconnects or lag.
I've also not tried plugging my ps3 controller into the extra micro port to see if it will work through it. I assume it won't, but I'll try it anyway!
my query with these MHL adapters is with regards playing back 24p movies. touched on this in another thread. most mkv movies are 24p (actually 23.976). does the MHL 2.0 adapter ONLY output at 60p? or can it also output 24p? if the MHL 1.0 adapter does output 24p, then bizarrely it may playback 24p mkv files better...
---------- Post added at 07:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:08 PM ----------
...also, can anyone confirm that these 2.0 adapters do actually pass charge to the s4 while attached? i don't mean whether they need a charge supply to operate, i mean if they actually charge the phone on their own when connected to the TV? there seem to be conflicting reports on this.

I can't confirm it, I don't have a TV that can do it but here's a list of the TV's that can supposedly provide a charge through the hdmi port: http://www.mhlconsortium.org/productlist/display-devices/
Normal HDMI ports won't pass power as far as I understand but an MHL compliant TV will.

HDMI cable??

guys whats cable works for S4?
You need a special adapter cable.

I bought the cable below and it works pretty well, though the phones battery still drains faster than the cable will charge. Even with the OEM 2A charger. What you should be looking for is an 11 pin MHL cable or adapter (other phones use what I believe is a 5 pin cable). The nice thing about the one I bought is that it includes an adapter for the S4 but it will work with any MHL compatible device.

You are correct. 11 pin MHL connectors will work with the S4, which also means the Note 2, S3, and a few others will be compatible with the S4. However the S2 is a 5 pin connector and will not work.
I was looking for one too. Thanks!
Thanks for the link
Did you check the adapter? What about the video quality?

30pin adapter

I've been looking all over internet for an adapter. In my work car (four different cars) I have a charger mounted for Galaxy Tab 2 (P3100), and I was wondering if I can use that same charger for my new Note 8.0?
So the adapter would have to be Samsung 30pin female to microUSB male.
I'm beginning to think that kind of adapter doesn't exist.
Any help from someone in here?

The note8.0 (official release then and no fake Chinese model) only got a micro usb connector to charge. There is no 30pin connector on the Note8.0.

Yes I can see there's only microUSB connetor available. That is just the reason why I need an adapter between galaxy note 8.0 and 30pin charger.

MHL Cable not working??

Hello!
I just bought an MHL Cable for my GS5 (DeLOCK 83296) and I plugged it into the MHL port of my Toshiba Smart TV: apart from start charging the phone, nothing happens.
I also tried plugging the cable to my Note Pro 12.2 tablet, but the result is the same.
I tried plugging the cable to other standard HDMI ports, no signal.
Is there anything I have to do to make this work? Is the cable faulty? Could MHL version be a problem?
Thanks for your help!
D
That MHL cable uses 5 pin MHL. The S3 and newer Galaxy phones use 11 pin MHL cables. You need either a 5 pin to 11 pin adapter, or a different MHL cable.
Ouch!! Could you please mention a cable that is ok for S5?
Thank you!
I've tried this one Aibocn 3321355, but any cable that says it works with the S3/S4/S5 or that has a 11 pin adapter should work.
Isn't it possibile to have only an HDMI connection on the TV side? Is the USB plug mandatory?
As I sadi, my TV has a powered MHL port...
I bought one of these merely for fun and due to cost.
Works perfectly with both S4 and S5.
Plug into hdmi of tv, usb into a plug and other end to phone, comes on soon as power the usb plug.

Looks like if you get a MHL 2.0 or 3.0 adapter, you won't have to connect the adapter to another power source.
The MHL cable has a 5 pin connection, standard on all other phones. You will find the S5 is 11pin so you will need an adaptor 5-11 pin. Easily found on eBay, $2.00
Hope this helps.

Can't find a working MHL adapter for my Note 4 (T-Mobile)

I can't find a working MHL adapter for my T-Mobile Note 4. The problem: the 11-pin plug does not snap into the phone like the 5-pin plug does, so it does not stay in the phone. Even if I hold it in, the screen is not mirrored. I noticed that the 11-pin plugs are longer, and the two prongs that allow the plug to be snapped in are too far back.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/picture.php?albumid=14195&pictureid=57248
These are the two that I tried which didn't work:
BelindaSupports UHD 4K MHL CABLE MHL 3.0 to HDMI Adapter for Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (Amazon)
Aibocn MHL Kit Universal MHL Micro USB to HDMI Cable 6.5 Feet/2M 1080P HDTV Adapter for Samsung Galaxy S5 S4 S3 Note 3 (N5100 N9000 N9006) Note 8.0 HTC LG and More MHL-enabled Phones (Amazon)
In both cases, the phone charger was plugged into the adapter, and I rebooted the phone while the adapter was held into the phone.
Can anyone recommend one? I would prefer not to buy the official Samsung adapter as those are expensive. Thanks!

I bought one online and has exact same problem. They suck. I ended up buying a better one at Best Buy. It worked good. Don't recall the brand though.
I bought a ScreenBeam Mini2. It works great. Connects in seconds through stock Smart View on MagMaNX ROM 2.0.1. Only complaints: Weak range -- phone has to be right by the dongle. Also, phone screen has to stay on for video (but can turn off for music), so I always feel like I'm overworking the display (and it can be a bit distracting if the phone's in sight). But I'm satisfied with it. After all, it works.
More than I can say for the Accell 10-Foot MHL Adapter. Supposed to work for N4, plugs in fine, lights up when powered, but won't mirror. Looks like another dud product. (Or maybe I need a pin adapter? Really wanted this one to work.)
I have had success with these MHL 11 pin to HDMI adapters on my Note 4 910V, and all samsung phones that support 11 pin MHL.

If you don't have a frys near you, they will ship it to you. Since I have two in my area, I usually wait for a sale when they are around $7 and buy a few for friends and relatives.
I just use my note 3 dock which has the mhl built in and the extra usb ports so I can charge the spare battery at the same time
Thanks everyone for the info. I got my hands on a Note 3, and the adapter that I have fits perfectly, and snaps all the way in. On my note 4, the usb port is not deep enough to allow the adapter to snap in, so it won't work no matter what I try. So, it looks like my Note 4 is not able to use an 11-pin MHL adapter, even though the specs for the phone say it is compatible. I wonder if it is because it's a T-Mobile variant?
it's obvious that note 4 doesnt have 11pin micro USB port. For the note 4 you should get the 5 pin micro usb MHL jack.
