[Q] Root trouble after updates (JB and Moonshine S-Off) - HTC One SV

Hey sorry to bother you but you seem like a guru in almost every Android topic but i have an issue at hand.
I have a HTC One SV from Boost Mobile. At first i was running ICS with root and CWM as my recovery, as your aware the JB update came out and i really wanted to update so i did the method from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...0&postcount=18 i was successful in the update, i did not check if i still had roost after the update. So i also noticed that there was a moonshine s-off method available and i proceeded with the method and successfully removed s-off. I also noticed that by doing the s-off method it also included root; so then i decided to check if root survived but i come to find out that i lost it. My original root i was using was ChainsDD superuser and the moonshine uses SuperSU, what options can i do in order to fix and gain root again? or did the JellyBean update patched root access?

Did you flash a recovery like cwm or twrp, after the jb update?

yes i i flashed the CWM recovery for JB but originally it had the CWM ICS recovery, i dont know if that makes a difference.

You need custom recovery for boost, look here.
From within the custom recovery you should be able to flash something like this.
This should bring you Supersu app & SU binaries.

Gain root access on the latest 1.55.531.3 update, ONLY IF you are S-OFF

I found out that it is possible to gain root access in an 'unrootable' update, IF you are S-OFF, by flashing ClockworkMod thru the bootloader, and then flashing Superuser thru ClockworkMod. I found out that this worked on the G2, as described here by rdmerck:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1206930
So all i did was replace the android_info.txt and the recovery.img in his zip, with the ones for our device. I just tried it, and it worked! i have Superuser access in the new 1.55.531.3 ROM.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Pretty simple...
1. Download the 2 attached files, put them both on the root of your sdcard, and rename the CWM_HBOOT.zip to PG59IMG.zip.
2. Boot into the bootloader however you prefer, let it read the PG59IMG.zip, and press volume up to update when prompted. When it finishes, it will prompt you to press Power to reboot.
3. Now boot into recovery however you prefer, and it should be ClockworkMod(I used the Modaco 4.0.0.9 version, basically because i had it conveniently lying around in .img format. I'm sure Rom Manager could now be used to flash the latest 5.0.2.7 version of CWM). Choose 'install from sdcard', then 'choose zip from sdcard', then choose the Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip and choose 'yes'. As has happened in the past, i had to flash it 3 times until it successfully installed. But it did work.
4. Choose to reboot, and enjoy root access on the latest stock ROM!
I figure a lot of people probably won't need all that instruction, but i included it for people who are newer to flashing stuff thru the HBOOT and CWM. I also figure that the user base for this will probably be very small, as most folks who are S-OFF probably are not choosing to run the stock ROM. But anyway, if you DO have S-OFF, i wanted you to know that you can have root access on the latest update. I figure this will also enable us to make nandroid images of the new ROM, if that would help development at all.
Anyway, here are the 2 files:
ClockworkMod: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18474790/CWM_HBOOT.zip
Superuser: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18474790/Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip
Note:
-This worked for me and should work for you, but use at your own risk.
-You must be S-OFF to do this.
-Hopefully this is only a temporary solution for those with S-OFF, until either Team Revolutionary cracks the update, or HTCDEV fixes whatever is preventing their bootloader unlocker tool from working on our device.

Yeah man, sounds good. I mean, perhaps this will be helpful to at least a few people, lol. It's an interesting and very simple idea tho... probably useful mainly on stock HBOOTs where fastboot is blocked, but S-OFF had been attained.

Well, since nobody has made a custom rom with the latest OTA bits, you will have to do what I did:
You'll need to downgrade yourself with the stock PG59IMG.zip, putting that file (found here) on the root of your sdcard and booting into the bootloader.
That will basically return your phone to stock and, IIRC, revert your status to S-OFF Locked. Then you'll need to boot up and check for system updates. You'll definitely be given the first small OTA update, but you very likely wont receive the latest OTA update via system updates.
For that you'll need to download it (from here) and flash it through the stock recovery. Once you've done that you can use the instructions in this thread to re-flash clockworkmod recovery and re-root.
Your phone will still be S-OFF but you'll have a locked bootloader.
Still can't figure out what I need to do to root my phone. That's on hboot 1.45.0013
Guess I might have to wait til Revo find a fix for it.

Since you're S-OFF, you could flash ClockworkMod on the update and then flash a custom ROM, but I believe that would leave you with an old ROM and the new radio, which seems to have caused issues for people. Since there aren't yet any custom ROMs based on the latest update, you should probably stay where you are if you want a custom ROM. But if you do install the update, you would still be able to downgrade and get back to where you are now.
Wonder how long it will/could be before revo crack the current HBOOT

You could run this ROM, which is based on the latest OTA release from HTC, so no OTA updates are needed. It is optimized, deodexed, and tweaked just a tad. I use it as my daily driver with great success. http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12063-devrom12192011-stock-12853110-r2-deodexed-crtgpu/

I think possibly we've been thru this before, lol, but that ROM isn't the very latest... there has been a pretty big update since then that thus far is only available as an official OTA update package.

Sensation stock ICS Root

I flashed the stock ICS ROM found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542192 but now my phone is no longer rooted.
I tried to follow the old procedure for rooting found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300 but the list of HBOOT versions in the revolutionary website do not include my new HBOOT version (1.27.1100).
Any ideas?
1. Wrong forum - should be in Q&A
2. Are you still S-OFF? If so, flash CWM manually and then root again
i think you post to wrong subforum...
but anyway... for now the only way i think is to RUU downgrade but its RISKY to brick your device. if you lost S-OFF look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522351
Sorry for posting to the wrong forum - maybe a mod can move the thread
Anyway, I am S-OFF, with EXT4 recovery.
I tried su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip, it said in installed correctly, but none of my root apps (eg root explorer) work.
I found su-bin-3.0.3.2-d-signed.zip at http://androidsu.com/superuser/ and installed it, now root explorer works, and I will start checking my other root apps (e.g. screenshot).
Thanks guys
Is it even possible to brick the sensation I rooted 3 samsung phones for friends and family and bricked all 3 before I got em rooted talk about a pain in the ass those phones suck to work with at least the Odin program works great
Bad news. Root explorer works, but any new root app I install says it needs root to run.
Any ideas?
Use the latest SU package and not an old one not for ICS perhaps?

Rooting + Ota updates

Hey guys I will get my phone this week and I was wondering what these OTA updates are?
When I press update in the options of oneplus, is that it?
I wanna root my phone but I heard OTA updates might not be available.
So, are they available or not? Should I root the phone? I really need it but I don't wanna miss any oficial updates.
I hope I don't lose my root later or something!
OTA updates are Over The Air Updates, and usually they include bug fixes, new functionalities or even a new version of android.
I red in this forum that rooting the OPO does not void the warranty and the phone continues to perform the OTA updates.
Can anyone confirm?
If you change the recovery you may lose the ability to receive the ota updates. But, you're in luck, you can boot into a custom recovery and flash the zip file to gain root access without installing the recovery on the phone itself.

A couple tutorials floating around and I believe stickied explain this.

if you root the phone you can flash the updated file or any file for that matter. So to not root your phone to update it to the latest rom to then root your phone and put something completely different on it makes no sense.
Now if you are rooting just to keep stock and root - again you can root and flash stock rom from this forum.. Win Win for you

I had Nexus 4, Now I am using Nexus 5. I bought OPO to gift to my Dad and wanted to use adfree or adaway and give the phone as it is. But for them to work I need to root access. My understanding is once you put a unlock boot loader and have TWRP, then root it. I will loose OTA. I will not be able to flash the phone every time there is an update as he lives in a different country and I cant travel quite often.
Thanks

I have one risk in such case. I will not have an Nandriod Backup with default recovery.

Stock recovery can always be reflashed and you follow the directions as posted to the tee and yes you boot into recovery flash su binary and thats it. To my understanding you will be flashing twrp but instead of it sticking it just flashes for that session so that you can flash the su binary.
I would go to that thread and ask in there directly for those that have done it or google it. This is of course if that is the route you would like to take
I have received the ota & updated on twrp.No problems

From what I have seen, you cannot have just root on 4.4.3. Verizon has patched that exploit. The only way to have root on 4.4.3 is to be s-off and unlocked.
With that being the case, if you choose to go s-off route, I would try and s-off with 4.4.2 version using firewater to see if that works first. If that does not work, you will need to use sunshine and pay $25 to get s-off and then you can root your device using a couple of different methods. Sunshine will work on 4.4.2 or 4.4.3 so it would not matter if you updated your phone before or after.
Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but that is what I have been reading.

You are fine to let it update. You will not loose s-off.
What I would do is let it update, then I would install a custom recovery, TWRP from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2717928. You can download the image and try this to install:
You will need temp root to install recovery with Flashify. Sunshine http://theroot.ninja/ will allow you temproot when you run it, install flashify and flash recovery.
Once recovery is installed, flash SuperSU.zip
If that does not work, follow this to install.
Download the above file into your platform-tools dir.
Turn off your device.
Turn on the device and keep holding volume down until a menu shows up.
Select fastboot from the menu list.
Plug the device into your computer.
If you have the right drivers installed, your screen should now say FASTBOOT USB.
Run the following command via the command line:
fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilename.img
Note that you will need to change the last part to match the name of the file that you just downloaded. This method requires that you have the drivers installed that come with the HTC Sync software that are available here. You will also need adb and fastboot for your computer.
Next you could install the SuperSU zip through recovery from here: http://download.chainfire.eu/452/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.zip. Here is the thread if you have questions on SuperSU. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
Boom, you are stock HTC Sense w/Android 4.4.3 with root.
You can stay on stock from there or flash a custom rom that already has root built in.

How about an updated root thread for 4.4.4 (Verizon) ?

I also would like to see a new something to help with rooting. I have been running root on my M8 for a while and went through the weaksauce method until that was no longer available them I switched to the Towelroot method and also used sunshine. Now after the update to 4.4.4 (which I knew I should not have done) I cannot use any method. I am hoping the update to Sunshine 3.0 comes soon and that fixes the problem. Also some better instructions to turn of the firmware updates and stop those dumb notifications would help a lot.

If you used sunshine you are s off. Boot into fastboot and flash a custom recovery and then flash a supersu.zip. If s off you are beyond needing exploits.
Thought after I donated for unlock and S-off with Sunshine, I tried to flash twrp recovery as usually do all my flashing through computer (adb)
well it was no possible, weird thought to gain root I just need to flash custom recovery and superuser. Nope It was my M7 At&t with 4.4.2 Sense5.5, (hboot 157000) was untill I installed and run TowelRoot (after Sunshine) it did the root. then i flashed inmediately twrp and sense6 OTApkg.
So i hope that jcase-beaups instruct to or write a guide how to root the M8 4.4.4 after Sunshine 3 be released . It will help alot of users that think Sunshine will root as well and awesome will be if they include the root exploit along with sunshine, I know some people do not want to root just unlock-s-off but without root privilege it make no sense a least for me. I will be waiting for Sunshine3 to unlock _S-off-root my new HTC m8, I took the ota knowing that Sunshine will not work for a while ( I wanted to take the M8-firmwares-4.4.4 from VZW) truested that sunshine will do after.
I did with my M7 as well took the ota and then used Sunshine a small support to those great developers that put all their work at our hands. Thank you.

That's what I though but some users run into Root annoyances included me even after flashing Recovery and Su.
and yes I used root exploit in order to root. (towelroot)
so I hoped Sunshine for 4.4.4 fix the small problem. jcase said will include su in the next version

The problem is users who are s off are trying to use hacky (towelroot etc) means of getting root back after taking an ota.
They should be using twrp or cwr flashed via flashboot. Then flash the su.zip of choosing in recovery. That's the only way you should be rooting a rom after getting s off or being s off and taking an ota.
Can't tell you how tired it gets trying to explain to an s off user who keeps trying to run an exploit to get root. First link you posted the guy used towel root after flashing twrp. Wtf. That's not how it works. That's how it breaks. /rant

I don't know if they are trying to hack ? i just point to a annoying may be a little bug with the intention to enrich info about sunshine and users
experiences. In my case I did Sunshine on the wife M7, never rooted, pure stock, she took the OTA, and I want to try Sunshine.
after s-off and unlock I couldnt flash recovery and Su have no binaries , use to flash from recovery su.zip to correct this problem but this time
with out custom recovery you cant. I was s-off unlocked. then I recall towelroot, run it grant me root inmediately, flash recovery and Su binaris updated immediately.

What prevented you from flashing a custom recovery?
An unlocked s off phone will flash recoveries and firmware for that matter all day long without a complaint.
And by hacky I mean a hacky method to root. It's not clean.

You would be using fastboot to flash. If you want I can help you get a working fastboot/adb setup via team viewer at some point it works for both of us.

finanandroid, I received an error using fastboot when flashing a recovery. Turns out I was using a fastboot.exe from 2011. Once I found a newer fastboot dated 1/17/2014 the error went away. Might want to check that. dottat knows what he is talking about. There is no need to use towel root to gain root access on an S-Off Unlocked M8.
- Just flash twrp (http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/164)
- Boot into recovery
- Hit the reboot button
- Hit the system button
- twrp will prompt you to install SuperSU. Allow twrp to install SuperSU
- Once finished boot into your phone and open SuperSU to complete setup.

Thanks for your input, I don't doubt that Dottat is right about it, I didn't post a problem to seek a fix I fixed it since I posted, Just wanted to share sunshine user experience. however the problem wasn't fastboot adb.
the problem was with the HTC M7. state it in my first post.
So I have sun shine on my m8 and its rooted and working great. Verizon keeps trying to push the 4.4.4 ota update on me.. Is there an update i should grab or let it install since I have sunshine..
Thanks Kyle
Greetings,
Thread cleaned.
Not everyone in these threads are at the same level...if you can be helpful then please do so if not move along.
After all we were all noobs at one point.
Thanks,

i think this is the information i was looking for also.
is the problem only that sunshine wont unlock a 4.4.4 device?
but if, like me, you are s-off and unlocked already you can update by any method without worry and still be unlocked and s-off.
if you then re-lock your device (for whatever reason) after updating to 4.4.4, then you cannot re-use sunshine (until sunshine is updated)
please correct if i am wrong.
i am waiting to update to 4.4.4.
