[Q] Re-partition memory to have a larger data storage - General Questions and Answers

Hello,
I have an XPERIA U and I'm running out of memory (no SD cart slot). I noticed the storage is partitioned: 2go for app storage and 4go for data (which is full). Is there a way to partition it so I have, let's say 750 mo for apps and the rest for data(music, files, etc).
I have seen a lot of tutorials but everytime, they're intended to be applied on a specific phone. Maybe I'm not using the correct term to designate the "mass storage" partition.
Thank you in advance!

Im thinking you mean 2GB for apps and 4GB for data? You need to clean out your sd card,by repartitioning, backup what you want to keep, but the way it looks right now, theres no way to do that at the moment, try scouring the forums and see if theres an alternative... http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1515

Oh ok...
Is there a way to move big game files (download by the app after the installation) to the app storage?
Edit: I managed to free 1,5gb using DiskUsage (looks like I can't provide external links, 10 post limit)! It provides a really nice diagram of your storages, allowing you to see useless files or big folders

Wooops! Yes I meant GB, we say octet instead byte in french, I didn't notice I wrote it this way.

MicroSD or Internal Memory?

Hello everyone I'm just wondering what is "better?" To install applications to the MicroSD or to the internal memory? I mean, for example, if it's an application that I rarely use, I'm sure everyone will say "MicroSD" but if it's an application that's constantly in use? What is better? Or does it not make a difference? Does it eat up a lot of memory constantly writing to the micro SD? or does it not make a difference in that sense either?
Do most people install to Micro or Internal Memory?

Nope. However, older firmwares may consume a lot (about 5-6M, as opposed to better-optimzied ones with only 500k-1M) of additional RAM memory with the card in. I recommend my previous storage- and firmware updaterelated articles; I've answered all your questions in them.
Add the poll question "Equally Both" as I split mine between them. There are Apps I have found the run better on main and the ones that don't matter, I put on Memory card.

Likewise. In fact, there are some applications that tell you during installation that it would be better to install them on the device's main memory.
Sure! How do I change the poll ?
I have read that HTC Diamond isn't having Memory Card Slot...It's really very disappointing.

... and this is relevant to the thread how?
i like storing most of my apps on memory card as i don't like using system memory not unless a app doesn't work right from sd card.
Like most, I put everything on the memory card unless the developer specifically states that it should be installed in main memory.
If it's a program that runs all the time, such as a today plugin, then it would be prudent to install it on internal memory to avoid problems. Everything else can go on the storage card.
I'm going to disagree with the majority here (as usual...)
I think you should you use as much of the internal memory that is available as possible. Why? First, it is faster to read/write to flash ROM than to MicroSD (flash also). Second, I believe it uses less power. Third, IS THERE AND CAN"T BE USED FOR ANYTHING ELSE! (just like my 401K). I know in ancient times, when I loved my iPaq 2210, you only had RAM memory for both programs to run and storage of files. Then you could adjust a slider to assign or reserve more space either way. But, AFAIK, in my Hermes, they are two physically different memory locations, so why don't use the storage memory? Of course, there should be some free storage memory always available for temp files and other stuff that changes over time.
Anyway, just my opinion.

That's exactly what I'd like to know. Is the power usage to R/W onto the SD disk that much higher? Or is it insignificantly low? Also, I agree, a program that CONSTATLY uses the memory card to read / write would MOST LIKELY use more power than installed on the main memory.

SD as program memory

Is possible use a part of my micro-SD on wm6 as program memory?
In a word, no.
Have a look at an SD card. There are only 8 contacts on it. It behaves as a serial disk drive as far as your phone/PPC is concerned, even though it attached to the "\Storage Card" mount point. The storage can be used by the phone but it is not directly addressable by the 32 bits of the CPU. It can only be paged in and out similar to the swap file on your PC.
Ok...
thanks for the reply
Is there any programm that allows you to use it as swap?
(Do you mean something as the virtual panging that windows do on the hard disk?)
Sorry, I think it's still no.
There is a lot of chatter on this over at
http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2005/11/17/494177.aspx
But the prognosis does not look good.
the least you can do is install as many applications as you can on your storage card...
tho not all apps can be installed on it.
remember, that if you used any software to make a part of the SD card become program storage space you will be still experiencing the same need to move page files to the ram before it can be used by the device.. so there's actually no point in doing that.

Yes... in fact i usually try to install apps on the flash memory... but lots need to be situated on the main memory... and the hermes don't has much of it...
Thanks a lot for the reply
(ps... sorry I'm not english and i could have written same/lots of mistakes..)
unfortunately ram isn't expandable on pdas..
again, the best you can do is install as many apps as you can on your storage card.

Internal Storage 2GB? Why Is that?

So I managed to get a ROM going on my tab that came today, and all is pretty good so far. One question tho; I went to my settings --> SD card usage or whatever its called and my internal memory is showing 1.79GB total space.
My SD card is 16GB and that's showing up fine as 14 or whatever FREE, since I partitioned at 2048/0.
I don't get why the internal storage is 1.79. Shoudn't it be 16GB or whatever since that's how much this tablet has? I'm confused.
Thanks!
I may be wrong on this (Developers, please correct me if I am wrong) but I think the 2GB is reserved for the Android system and the remaining space is what you can use for apps, etc.

if thats the case, why won't it show the remaining 14G or whatever hmmm
The 16gig is divided as 2gig for apps and 14gig for storage (/sdcard). After format and overhead you get what you see.

So how do i mount my internal? Im only able to mount my microsd card..
Actually I take that back. I can only mount my internal storage to my computer but not my microsd card. I have no idea how to do that...
That's normal behavior for the gtablet. There is no built in method for mounting the external SD to your computer.

Low Memory!!!

I continually run out of space on my blaze's internal memory.I can't sync certain things, like evernote does not have enough space to save notes. I can't do any backups because there is not enough available memory.
I don't think I have an excessive amount of apps, and have put as many on the external sd card as possible. I don't have any games stored on the internal memory, nor any media save a few pictures.
If I look at the applications on the sd card(the internal card) It says I'm using 1.3gb. Just a quick tally and I hardly have more than 70mb in the size of the applications. Am I missing something? Previous phones I have used with less memory have not encountered this. Is there any screenshot or other info that may help?
Any assistance is gratefully appreciated.

Are you on custom ROM/kernel? If so, which ROM/kernel are you using?
some questions
are you using a custom rom? do you have CWM? If you have cwm maybe a backup is on there along with titanium backups... that would eat up a gig.
Best advise is to connect it to your pc and check where all the space is being used.

I believe by default the pictures and video files are saved to internal storage so I would check on that too.
I am using the darkknight rom build 3. Sorry for not mentioning that. But I encountered this same issue while running stock. I know the majority of the pics are on the external sd.
I do have cwm and ti on this. THese cannot be setup to use space on the external sd can they?
I would suggest booting to recovery, format /cache and dalvik-cache partitions.
Fix perms, and reboot.
You stated you had low MEMORY so that leads me to believe your device is cluttered with temp and cached files which can be easily removed by doing what I stated above.
Keep in mind ladies and gents, memory is different from storage.
However, the issues you stated above could indicate a low STORAGE issue.
So, if you are having a storage problem, then you need to figure out what is taking up so much space on your device. That can usually be determined by going to settings>storage and looking at the output that is displayed.
For more advice, please let me know that it is a low MEMORY issue or a STORAGE issue.
Try out an app called DiskUsage, it works a lot like WinDirStat for PCs.
That way you can find what's taking up a ton of data
I'm a little confused. I thought i read somewhere the blaze had 4gb of internal memory. Why am i only showing up with 1gb system memory. But also like 2gb usb storage but what is that?
Thanks for any help.

It comes with 4gigs internal and 4gigs external. The internal is used for the OS and system apps. I installed GTA anniversary edition and it took up all my USB storage...then it got deleted.

Sorry for not clarifying, its a storage issue. I should have been a little more exact with my posting...
Incidentally, I cleared up about half a gig by deleting the ti backup folder's contents,
You can change the location of your backups in Titanium by going to preferences-> and scroll down to 'Backup folder location'. Look next to the 'DETECT' button and that will show you the current path. It defaults to 'mnt/sdcard/TitaniumBackup'. Change it to 'mnt/sdcard/external_sd/TitaniumBackup' by pressing the back button and navigating to the right place. The removable storage (sd card) on the Blaze is the sdcard/external_sd path. That way you will still be able to have your backups.
Thanks, there was about half a gig in the ti backup folder, so this should fix my problem.
Is there a way to store apps on the external sd and still get the widgets to work? And also to free up the internal storage?
Thanks
No, sorry, widgets need to be on the internal storage to work properly.
How do i get games like gta and spectral souls to install to my external?? Those games took up all the internal memory. It type suck because theres no space to cache up music from my google music library.

OK so this is my problem...and need help quick BEFOOREE!!
Ok....so I've had the phone for about three months now and i'm beginning to think that this is a problem that I can't resolve on my own..meaning I might have to get a new phone...I'm running the custom ROM and have not rooted the phone.. The problem started when I tried to sedn pictures through my messages. The phone would say..Not enough memory get rid of some stuff.... so i started uninstalling apps that i really don't need. Problem didn't seem to resolve itself, so since everything is backed up to googles ( as far as contacts and apps) I did a system reset to no avail. Seems like I'm having the same problem. Now I have an 8Gb Sd card mounted in system and when I try to move apps into the Sd card it says not enough memory??? Even after system reset. So this is what it says on my storage window... System Storage 0.89GB....USB Storage ( by the way wtf is this??) 1.40 GB and then the SD card with Total space : 7.40 GB Available 7.35GB...I can't seem to move anything into the USB or Sd cards... and yes the Sd card is mounted, or so the system says.... for the sake of not throwing the phone out of the window please help!!
I'm noticing....*whilst* playing around that it seems my phone thinks this USB storage is the SD card. when i check applications and see those in the SD card it shows me those on USB storage...and nothing seems to go to Sd card. I tried downloading apps2 sd and it says same thing...not enough memory...because those few appas I have are taking the whole 2 GB's of space in this invisible usb storage??? Still need help. what the hell is this usb storage and what makes it...looking around i found on the samsung forums that (You must enable USB storage to mount the SD card) i don't remerber doing this and have looked everywhere to turn it off...btw I have the phone replacement thing from T-Mobile..would rooting the phone affect that?.Since it looks to be my only option...I though doing a system reset would fix this but seems not...
in settings-storage, the sd card shows your external sd, usb storage shows the internal space and system shows the system space. this phone has very small system space. my solution was to root the phone and remove the unneeded apps and the "bloat" that tmobil gave us so kindly. you can find guides that show you what can safely be removed, or you can install a custom rom which already has been thinned out. aside from this, clearing the app data in setting-applications can recover some of the space but depending on which app you clear you may need to login to apps like facebook the next time you use that app.
the options in there will have a 'move to sd' button if the app can be moved otherwise it will be greyed out. moving any that can be moved will help.
next will be the stock messaging app that stores its info in system, consider trying out go-sms or handcent as your messaging app and they will store most info on your external sd and help save system space...

Guess ill try rooting it. My problem seems to be that the phone thinks the Usb storage is the sd storage...and then external sd is actual sd. Sucks...cause it seemed to be a decent phone..but your tight..the bloatware is rediculous..any. smooth custom Roms u can reccomend?

dji crystalsky /data 1,5gb full limitation.

how can I use more than 10 apps?
which twrp, app2sd, dalvik symlink can I use, bec their lack of reason of designing /data partition to 3gb? (64gb inside)
Assumed your device has slot for external SD-card and assumed your device's Android supports Adoptable Storage then you can extend Android's storage memory up to capacity of external SD-card.
Note: Android still installs the apps on the internal memory and dumps their data on the external SD card. So, you are deprived of installing any further apps if your phone has a scarcity of internal storage.
FYI: Once an APK got installed, you can delete the APK to regain storage space.
it does have 51gb more free space on that internal 64gb, so but im tryin to solve it with link2sd, and a 2partitioned external sd

You don't want to load and slow your CrystalSky down with much more than you need to fly. It wasn't exactly meant to be a tablet.

I installed a few programs regularly from appstore (also side loaded) then after they installed moved apps to SD card. Saved a lot of space on the Crystal Sky, but there are a few system apps that can't be.
