[Q] Infinity Lag - Should I RMA? - Asus Transformer TF700

After getting fed up with my Infinity, I finally called ASUS. They gave me an RMA number. Is it worth it to send it in since I have to pay to ship it?
The problem I have is the keyboard lags so bad most of the time. It will not register anything for 5 seconds, then try and insert all the letters you typed at once. The browser also closes itself down randomly without an error box. In general it's just extremely slow. Made more apparent by the fact that I have a Galaxy Note II that I use every day. It's frustrating to use a $500 tablet that is so much slower.
I'm afraid it's just the nature of the tablet, though, and I'm wasting money shipping it. I've done several factory resets and cold boots. Lags even when typing on the setup screen after a reset. I'm not rooted, everything is stock.
Should I mail it off?
Thanks.

It is doubtful that the RMA will make the tablet any faster. The symptoms you describe are unfortunately very typical for the TF700 if not optimized. The bottleneck is very slow I/O performance and nothing they could do at the repair center will fix that.
There are a number of ways to speed it up a little. For browsing you could try the Boat browser, it's much faster than stock.
You can try the app Greenify. It hibernates unseen background services and helps managing what's running at any given time.
If you are willing to root, you can try SD Booster, implement the Browser2RAM script, install Titanium Backup and get rid of or freeze apps and services you don't use.
But the real difference makes to unlock the tablet and flash a custom ROM. I am running CROMi-X and now the TF700 runs like you would expect from a $500 tablet.
If you decide to sell it, be quick about it. A new model is due this fall.

My biggest concern is that I do have an internal hardware problem. If I root and install some kind of custom rom but it doesn't fix the issue, I won't be able to send it to ASUS. I do have a 2 year Square trade warranty though I don't know if it will be covered by them if rooted.

Well, then send it in and let Asus check it out. Since you got the RMA - better safe than sorry. But with the Squaretrade warranty you're all covered anyway. They don't care if you root and unlock AFASIK.
Check that on the forums, but I'm pretty sure Squaretrade has you covered no matter what you do software-wise.

I doubt that you have a hardware problem. What you are describing is what many people complain about on the stock experience. Rooting may help as you can use B2R but realistically the only way to solve your issues is to unlock and install a custom rom.

Speaking with Asus about JB issues +advice from them

Recently, I contacted Asus about the issues that we have seen since the JB update. Since I support a number of these tablets for clients, I have had lots of backlash since the update. I emailed Tien and Gary about what advice they could provide when dealing with these units. I have included the last response that I got from him that addresses factory resets and cold booting, as well as a method he recommends for installing software after a reset:
"Hi Jordan,
There are people out there who believe doing multiple factory resets works, but I do not think so. Once a device has been reset, there is no user data left on there. Everything is back to factory. There should be no way data can be conflicting. Restoring a device that has nothing on it in the first place would not make a difference. However, multiple cold-boots do seem to help. Start with a factory reset and then as you reload your data back on (apps, media, e-mail, ect), cold-boot after something has been loaded on. For example, once and app or 2 has been reloaded, cold-boot the device before you load another app. This is the same for new app s being downloaded also. You want to keep the cache clear as much as possible.
I understand that a firmware update, or even news of a firmware update would be a lot easier, but again, I apologize as I do not have that kind of information. HQ releases the updates, and for the most part, they are pretty tight-lipped about them.
Sending in a bunch of units might not the best solution - you are right. I would try cold-boots u for now. JB is still new and there are definitely some things that need to be worked out with it on the TF700. I would give them some more time to deliver a solution.
Tien"
I have yet to try this process on my tab, maybe someone will beat me to it. Hope this information helps someone out there.
The issues that I reported are:
1. Graphics related issues that show as a flicker of the top 1/3rd (sometimes the entire) screen while in landscape, also a line of black pixels flashes for a moment on that same part of the screen. I have seen this in many apps at this point including the stock browser and in the XDA developers premium app. It seems unrelated to the application since I have seen reports of it on the desktop. (this is driving our users crazy- need a fix quickly!)
2. Backspace key is not respected in many applications if the asus keyboard is enabled. There are lots of examples on xda but this worked in ICS and now, does not.
3. The auto screen dimmer does not work properly and will dim, and not increase brightness when tapped. It also seems much more distracting and does not dim as gracefully as before(I know it can be disabled).
4. When docked, a Bluetooth keyboard that is paired with the device, will not function. A usb keyboard will work, but it is odd that Bluetooth keyboards will allow no input at all while docked.
5. Crash of the device with a white screen- have seen this 3 times.
6. Wifi direct removal is a major disappointment as many users had a need for this functionality.
This is good information, thanks. The only real change I have witness that's a problem is Google navigation freezing or rebooting the TF700 during trips longer than a few minutes. Intermittent problem but it has happened on three separate trips.
I'm getting the occasional black lit screen crash/freeze

Not sure where you are seeing this. Wifi Direct was not removed with JB. In fact, I noticed it performs much better.
The option for sending a file via WiFi direct is avialable under the share options. If you are looking for it directly under the settings menu, it was just moved to a different place (not an ASUS thing.....it was moved by Google). Go under Settings -> Wifi and click on the menu button to access it (3 dots in the lower right hand corner).

Thanks for that! I had a couple of users who complained that it was not there. I emailed them to let them know it how to access it, they appreciate it.
--Would have been nice if Tien had mentioned it-- ya think?
Never even tried that feature and assumed it was removed since Asus listed it as a feature that would be removed with the update. I get it now.... they removed their custom support of it in favor of the stock android setup.
Kind of funny that an update announcement was posted today, I have been back and forth with them quite a bit in the last couple of weeks and the last email I sent to Tien and Gary said this:
"Unless you have a newer firmware with some of these issues resolved, I am not
sure how offering to send them to you will do any good....
Please let Gary know that this is effecting companies that have purchased over 50 of
these tablets at a time. We need resolution!"
Maybe I got his attention. I have to support these tablets, and so does Asus, they are an international company that is trying desperately to be THE go to hardware partner for cutting edge tech. Partnerships with the big G and M$ are evidence of that. I hope they realize that this is a defining year for them, either they will get their support in order or they will fold under the pressure of the added user base.

2. Wifi drops out and fails to reconnect or slows down to be unusable state
Well if looks like some of the issues have been resolved but some still remain. Has anyone had time to try the method tien suggested in my op? Unfortunately i have not gotten time.

I also don't have the time to try, but I have my own share of doubt regarding these suggestion. Cold-booting my device after loading one or 2 apps is just too much of a hassle and I doubt that it provides any practical benefit. My friend's Nexus 7 haven't been turned off for weeks and I don't see any slow down or problems. The same thing can be said about my phone as well. I know they are different devices, but I don't think Google designs Android in such a way that you need to restart your device every time you install a new app.
Overall, I believe all of the problems above can only be fixed with OTA updates, and no amount of cold-boot or factory reset can fix it. I might be wrong, but it is just my opinion.
Anyway, thanks for sharing. Maybe someone will benefit from this discussion.
Since nobody has tried this method, I guess I will give it a shot today. Of course I have major doubts that this will actually work but if Tien said that there is some benefit, I have to at least try it. He is one of the only reps at asus that has ever given us any real help with the TF series.

Seriously? You think cold booting is a hassle? My friend it takes an extra second of hold the power down button when turning your tablet on. Come on stop lazy. Also if the op isn't blowing smoke, then these suggestions are directly from asus, so why would they lie? I personally have seen a huge benefit from cold booting after a couple of app installations. I do it anyways because i do like to keep my cache clear.

If a computer requires regular cold booting to work properly, it is defective. A Linux-based system should be able to reach uptimes measured in years (theoretically, if no updates were required).

Seriously? If you buy this expensive gadget you shouldn't be doing extra hussle like cold booting after installing an app or two. It should work without. This is the only Android device with this kind of problems. Not sure if this is some kind of memory leak or what is going on. Still its interesting that for example on Galaxy S 3 even beta roms work better than these official ones from Asus.
Asus designs beautiful units, then manufactures them with horrible QC and finally don't seem to know much about software optimizing.
Finally got around to trying this process.... Maybe I installed too many apps at one time since after the first few installs, i was doing more than 2 in some cases. No difference doing this method over factory reset. I am going to contact them again today with feedback from the process and latest update.

I can't say that I'm surprised, but I really appreciate your effort. Thanks for sharing.
To be honest the response seemed like a "SYA" response that was so far fetched and so much hassle you wouldn't bother to try it and they could push your issues aside.
I find it funny that they claim "Jellybean is still new..." when it has been out in the wild since around July or earlier. That seems like plenty of time to get the software optimized for your flagship device(s). If you want my honest opinion, the TF700 was placed on the back burner a little bit because of the Nexus 7 that Asus and Google partnered up for. That took priority but I do find it odd that the hardware in the Nexus 7 almost mirrors the TF700, yet the Nexus 7 does not exhibit the same odd behavior or issues we are experiencing (some of us anyway) on the TF700.
I must be one of the blessed ones because I'm not experiencing all the issues that are mentioned here. I had the hardware issue of screen flex and bent adapter port, but other than that and getting a replacement I'm pleased. I actually considered getting a galaxy note 10.1, but just knew I wouldn't be satisfied with the display. The screen is the major aspect of a tablet and you really can't find a replacement at this time for the full HD of the tf 700. I have noticed that my pad is running really well after the last update and I'm really happy I didn't go with the note. I'm totally stock and not rooted. I may root one day if needed and there is a method that doesn't void the warranty by using the bootloader (if there is please let me know...I'd love to use titanium backup with root).

Root does not require you to unlock the boot loader.

ICS can be rooted easily even with the locked bootloader. If you are already on JB, follow the guide to downgrade to ICS 9.x.x.30, root using the debugfs method, use OTA Rootkeeper, and then apply the OTA to JB.

Extra insurance for unlocking needed?

Hi all,
I'm thinking about unlocking my TF700 after all things I heard about CleanRom. However, Asus stupidly decided that it voids all warranty (idiots). So I seek your advice. Is it really worth to unlock the device for that ROM and is it recommended to take extra insurance? If so, does anybody know a good one in The Netherlands?
Thanks!
Anybody? Really eager to get the ROM on but that is the only thing that is bothering me and preventing me from doing at this moment :crying:
It's worth unlocking.
How long have you had the tablet?
If you have absolutely no manufacturing deficiency and are happy with the tablets looks.
Then unlock it and flash CleanROM.
Don't let Asus hold a gun to your head.
IMO Asus isn't helping the tablet much with OTAs and their RMA process can be a nightmare.
If your still unsure "Squaretrade" is a good way to go, yet in opinion not worth it.
Thanks!
Well there are two complications I've had the tablet for about 3 - 4 weeks and it is the best Asus tablet (in terms of defects) I've owned yet (before had a TF101 that has been 4 times for RMA and have had 7 Primes). There is also the catch. After lots of complaining, I came in contact with the marketing manager of Asus Benelux who agreed on swapping my Prime (after first sending me in some more Primes which all had some kind of problem) for a TF700. So I don't have a receipt, everything should probably be dealt with the manager directly. Furthermore, I don't think SquareTrade is availabe in The Netherlands.
Have you tried CleanROM, is it worth the risk and really makes the tablet fly? I find it very sluggish atm...

It's right below in my signature...
Been running CleanROM for about 4 days now.
I have difficulty putting the tablet down, I run the battery down everyday now, My Infinity has become my go to device.
I really-really like the tablet now, prior to CleanROM I was really-really hating it.
The Infinity is no longer a sluggish device!
Definitely worth the risk!
My recommendation hold it tight because you will be using it more and more.

I see you type Benelux, so if you are from the Netherlands there should not be an issue. The Dutch law protects you against such unreasonable warranties. The Dutch law says that a manufacterer has to deliver a proper functioning device.
Hi bought mine at BCC and bought an extra warranty that covers all stupid actions for about € 100,- ex.btw. for 3 years.
When repair is needed no questions asked, broken screen, bricked etc.

Great Performance! This thing flies!

:good:Yes, this is yet another thread about the TF700 Infinity but this one is to counter all of the negative threads created by folks who come to xda--a developers' site, crying about their laggy Infinity, when all they have to do is unlock, root and mod -- choose from CleanROM 2.3, Clemsyn's OC kernel, Cyanogenmod (official and un), Baked Black Bean, Paranoid Android and others...take your pick!--to make it the fastest jellybean tablet with the highest resolution screen in existance. Come on guys! No more whining.
Regardless of that, I'm still buying Nexus 10 and throwing tf700 away.
I lined up my square trade and unlocked. agree 100% with OP.. this thing is a whole new beast. Not worried if something happens down the road because I lined up my warranty first. Plus needed the warranty in case something tragic like a drop or shatter happens in next couple years. Losing the manufacturer warranty really is minor to me. Not like they would cover if I accidentally shattered the screen.. of course as all post IMO.
EDIT. I just got an email from Squaretrade. I can't guarantee this for all, but the email says if you go to their Facebook today 11/1 and like it then enter your email you can get a 40% off coupon. Think about it. 2 yr protection including accident and water cost around $100 to cover a $500 product. Take 40% off that. Unlock your device and have fun. . I haven't tried since I already have. Just figured I would share for those that might be able to use it.
One more thing. sorry for the updates.. the small print in the email states that the promotion is from 11/1-11/15. If you do it you will get your code in an email on 11/16. So not instant, but still. Hope this helps someone. Hate to sound like I am selling them..

Well, my decision is purely based on screen res. I do photography I like to enjoy my photos on a tablet with a high-res screen.
I do really enjoy iPad 3 screen, Nexus 10 one is going to be even better.
On a side note, I really hope that Samsung will provide a decent flash memory controller, so the thing flies with a stock rom.
Once CleanROM is available for Nexus 10, I will be one of the first ones to install it !

Lol seriously? lol some of you guys are hilarious. The tf700 screen is one of the best on a tablet for its size. Looking at the side by side views of the tf700 and the N10..then look EXACTLY THE SAME. Lol at this screen size condensing any more pixels is just novel. I just got my Prime swapped out for a Infinity last week. This thing is like night and day compaired to the Prime. I haven't crashed yet (knock on wood). I'm also amazed that everything works like wifi and gps. Also a little added bonus is the Sd card doesn't stick out, so I don't have to worry about it.
Now if Gameloft and EA Games would just get off their asses and make some games compatible.

That sucks, but ive had mine for months, use it everyday for school and for games/movies and have no physical defects. Honestly it comes down to how well you protect your tablet. If you are a person who tends to get physical damage easily, then it wont matter wether you have N10 or 700, you will eventually get damage due to your usage tendencies. Sorry man but honestly your reaching now to justify a purchase of the N10 so soon after the launch of the 700. Your never going to be satisfied if you buy products with that kind of mindset... I'm using stock everything, but I'm perfectly happy with this tablet.
So, I have to wait 5 seconds when opening the stock browser. Which is exactly what Firefox and Chrome do on Windows, too. Used to it.
Copying files internally is a little slow. Yes. Wow. Ever tried copying 10gb of photos on Windows? ETA about 2 hours on XP, 5 hours with the ridiculous 'calculating' W7 does. Over USB it goes as fast as internally on my pc itself. Don't see the issue.
It crashes maybe once every other week. Again, I'm used to Windows.
WiFi works fine, JB actually improved it for me.
25GB MKV (Timescapes 4K) plays without any lag in MXplayer when on performance mode. 3GB MKV's work fine in balanced mode.
I haven't had any whitescreens, only the very occasional line (three times since JB update when it came out.) and not a single game lags.
Maybe it's because I'm used to WinXP, or I have more patience (haha..), or I'm just lucky, but it works fine for me. And I photoshop, Game (hardcore, not casual), watch videos, type and whatnot all day long. So it's not a lack of use, either.
I do not expect my tablet to do more than my gaming PC. It's a mobile device, not a bloody Quantum computer.

If your Windows installation crashes "every other week" there's something wrong with your installation; hardware or software. Maybe you're running Windows 98?
Windows has gotten pretty damn stable over the last few years. It's far from perfect and sure, driver issues can cause reboots, but they're usually solved with a driver update. With the TF700, you're **** out of luck until Asus decides to fix the issue. If they ever do.
If a regular app crashes the tablet running stock rom, it's Asus fault, not the app. As long as Asus is supplying the entire software and driver stack for the ROM, they're the ones to blame for instability issues. A regular app running with regular, limited privileges should not cause reboots.
(This is of course when running stock and non-rooted. If you're testing new kernel modules and it suddenly reboots you're probably to blame for that.)

Really? Manufacturing defects are, what, a conspiracy theory? These things happen, even if you're ever so careful with your gadgets. And don't tell me Asus is spotless when it comes to manufacturing quality and QA, you all know that's bull****.
Maybe the guy actually does throw his tablet around, runs his car over it and lets his dog chew on it. Fine, he's to blame. Or, just maybe, Asus did **** up? Way to go being condescending about it and blaming the person for being careless with everything he owns just because your tablet doesn't have this fault.

Actually, not really. Most of the software issues are easily fixed with a custom ROM. So, you're not *really* out of luck until Asus decides to fix the issue. It can be fixed in other ways, without waiting for Asus.
In my opinion, if you are still on the Stock ROM, you are really cheating yourself out of a great experience with the TF700. Sure, it voids your warranty, but honestly, I don't think that I've *ever* used a manufacturer warranty (and I am an electronic junkie!). Usually, if there is a hardware defect, it either occurs within the retail return period or well after the manufacturer warranty expires - at least that has been my experience.
If you are really worried about the warranty, you can get a two-year, cover-everything warranty from SquareTrade for $87. Well worth it in order to make the TF700 all that it can be... The SquareTrade warranty even has you covered if you brick the TF700 due to a bad flash or whatever.
With the TF700, I actually did purchase the SquareTrade warranty since I was a little concerned about a few things (physical button quality, etc). $87 is a small price to pay for two years of coverage, including accidental-damage coverage!

XP SP3. I game a lot. (Old games, too, hence no 7.) And ever so often, games cause reboots because of terrible scripting or lousy porting.. (Skyrim was ridiculous. It just rebooted every hour, if it even lasted that long. Took them till patch 6 to fix it... ) So does VLC when viewing blurays, because VLC hates blurays. (Common problem.)
So what you're telling me js that in order to have a lag-free, quick Infinity, I need to forfeit my warranty? Sounds like a great deal.

SquareTrade is US and UK only. Also, I'll say it again: having to give up your warranty COMPLETELY (even for issues that are clearly Asus' fault) is unreasonable in my book, especially since you're not given access to nvflash.
I have yet to unlock my device. If I'm to unlock it and void my warranty, I want a (near-)perfect device hardware-wise, which means I'll have to return this one (crap volume buttons, "clicky" display, backlight bleeding, etc). Hopefully I'll also get one with the .26 bootloader which means I can get access to nvflash.
I wouldn't have needed to deal with this if Asus would still honor RMAs for hardware/manufacturing faults even when unlocked.
I'd very much like to unlock, but I'm not doing unless I have access to nvflash at least.

If Skyrim crashes your computer, it's the OS and/or drivers that are to blame. A regular application running in user mode/ring 3 should not be able to crash the entire system. That's why there are kernel and user modes: to avoid this (and security issues). Of course, buggy drivers (very common nowadays, sadly) ruins this where a game can crash the driver and cause a reboot/BSOD. Now, I'm not saying Skyrim was perfect, but in an ideal world, their bugs should not cause reboots
My previous post was a bit of a tongue-in-cheek response though, sorry about that. My point is though, that while you expect your PC setup to crash every now and then, it should not be expected of a device like the TF700. Fixed hardware, fixed software. (Again, not valid if you're running custom ROMs or kernels).

No, you don't *have* to - the TF700 actually runs OK on stock if you ask me. But, yes, if you want the TF700 to perform as well as it possibly can, then you'll need to unlock and install a custom ROM (which will void the warranty). Best bet is to get a third-part warranty. Well worth the $87, in my opinion (even less if you go for a one year warranty, I'm assuming - $87 is for a two year warranty that includes accidental damage coverage, as long as you use a coupon).
In the end, what good is a warranty on a device that you are not happy with anyway?

[Q] Is it worth it to lose warranty in order to unlock?

What can we stock users expect from a custom rom like cleanrom?
Is it really that much faster?
Will the input lag be solved ? Because now my tablet takes a few seconds to catch up with what i wrote.
I get a lot freezes where applications hang. Especially the stock browser, every few minutes i get "program is not responding" wait or close
Overal the tablet feels laggy and slow and i wonder if cleanrom will fix all these issues or that i have to accept it as it is

Yes, it worth to run cleanrom 2.4. It makes everything works the way it suppose too and it makes the device worth $500. Without cleanrom, I would return my tablet. Seriously, I was once afraid to unlock because I don't know if it really better, and now people whom are not happy with their devices should unlock and flash this rom, then kick yourself in the bud for not doing it sooner.
YES!! Unlock it and use the CleanROM & Data2SD mods. I was previously on CleanRom 2.3 only but it was still lagging, especially when I'm updating an app and trying to surf. Ofcourse, this is caused by the inherently poor memory Asus installed in this device. With the Data2SD mod, I'm able to multitask without the lags. TF700 + Jellybean + CleanROM + Data2SD = iPad killer

I keep looking for new updates and fixes, so i guess pretty desperate. I have tried lots of resets but i can't really say that it was helping. I have been experiencing some weird problems lately, the screen will sometimes not respond on my finger, it looks like the device is stuck but when i use the dock to navigate it works normally. With a restart it goes away but i do fear it might be some hardware issue, altough it's probably very unlikely. Problems like these make me wonder if i should give up my warranty. On the other hand i feel that i'm not productive on this tablet the way it runs at moment. I have downgraded to ICS, i have done a few factory resets, nothing helps, at the moment i'm running JB which seems just as bad. Ever since i got this device i have been resetting and updating, hoping to get rid of some problems, i would like to use my device and stop worrying about these kind of problems. It gives me some hope that cleanrom users report some improvement, thanks for the feedback.

The echo of desperation there it seems
Is it possible to return the Asus for a different brand or perhaps another TF700?
If not a new ROM would be the next step.
There are a few pre-unlock tricks, although the ultimate fix for some would be the custom ROM route.
Do custom ROMs fix the lag transitioning between apps?
Really the only lag I notice on mine is when I use dolphin to browse the web, and during Netflix. That's really it. Not sure if a custom ROM will fix those issues :-/

My Infinity spontaneously crapped out, so I'd say don't ditch the warranty unless you have e.g. SquareTrade aftermarket warranty as a backup. Asus's QC is just too poor to trust these devices to last.
Yes it is
I had the warranty officially for 5 days. The improvements with using CleanROM are astounding over plain stock. Plus, you will be able to make this tablet a beast for many moons after Asus stops updating the software. And the modifications are almost endless
No, it is not.
I unlocked mine and 2 days later I am faced with non-functional, bricked unit, without any warranty (this is completely hardware related, not software). It was a $500 mistake. It was very very good, for two days.
Go ahead and roll those dice, you riverboat gambler . . .

Without any more relevant information, I'd strongly hesitate in establishing a cause/effect relationship here. I'm sorry for the fact that you are out of warranty (seemingly), but I'd still take it up with ASUS. Unlocking the 700 probably didn't have anything to do with -- unless yo udid something stupid -- which we all do sometimes.
Uhh, I did anything but establish a cause and effect relationship. That's why I said my issue was hardware related. It had nothing whatsover to do with unlocking. My point is that with a [seemingly] very high defect ratio on these machines, the consequence of completely removing all warranty (even for unrelated issues), is severe.

I unlucked my device and so far I'm very happy with it, it's unbelievable how much of a difference it made, at first i was skeptical about what other users reported but i can confirm that it's true. ASUS is doing a terrible job with their software, taking away warranty because users want normal use out of their device...they should be sued, anyway this will be my last ASUS product ever, I'm content with my infinity now thanks to the custom roms on xda, but i feel ASUS should see the consequences of their policies, the only thing i can do is stop supporting them with my wallet.
I don't know how it works in the US or other places, but here in europe there is a law that states that customers should have two years of warranty, i doubt ASUS can overrule that law by a simple " I AGREE " statement.

Agreed -- apparently, my red flag went up before I had actually read and consumed your reply. My sincere apologies. You're right, but there are loads of people that have been unlocked and flashing away since the beginning, myself included. My guess is that, from a statistical point of view -- which is worthless in your case, where a 100% of TF700s are sucky devices -- most of the 700s are actually fine.

You're right, obviously, as EU consumer law is pretty strict. However, you'd need to bring a lawyer into play, as ASUS will just keep its stance when you contact them telling them so. There's a minimum of two years' warranty against factory defects or "inability to use for intended purpose" -- the last term is pretty broad, actually.
Unlocking and flashing any of these roms is not a magic bullet, thought it will perform better. I'm currently playing around with Paranoid Android and really digging it.
My biggest gripe with unlocking is that I can't view play store movies and tv shows in HD anymore, I wouldn't really use it that often but it's lost functionality and it kinda pisses me off. For instance, took the family away on vacation this past summer and being able to hook up my tablet to the flat screen where we stayed was pretty nice. Now, I'll have to either have movies already installed and ripped from a bluray or just watch movies in, what appears to be, 480i.
Both cleanrom and Paranoid are pretty awesome roms and I highly recommend you check out both and some of the others, if you decide to unlock.
*edit*
for what it's worth, my TF700 boots up in a staggering 35 seconds on Paranoid android as opposed to the 1min 40+ seconds on stock and stock based roms. wicked fast

Is the I/O problem gone? Is JB any better?

Hey everyone.
Im thinking of buying this tablet tomorrow, but Ive been reading about this I/O problem and dont really understand what it is, but it seems it has something to do with the memory speed being bottleneck and causing lag and apps crashing.
Is this problem gone with lastest updates or is it still there and a big issue avoiding me to buy this tablet?
Also I heard you cannot root the device without losing warranty or that I need to contact Asus for it or something like that. Is it easily rootable?
Does the tablet lag big time or slow down over time?
Thanks for the help.
If you are willing to unlock then this tablet can go as fast as any other.
Stock w/root you can still get it going pretty well.
don't know about running without root as I did that day 1.
Mine is stock and not rooted, and it lags too much. Way more than my Galaxy Nexus GSM running 4.1 JB. Chrome browser would have very jerky scrolling and even the stock browser would be unresponsive. I will root and then report back any differences
I 'me very happy with mine - stock with no root. I have two other JB devices, Nexus 7 and Nook Color with CM10 and all show the same startup delay on some apps - so I blame the apps not the devices.
Mine runs fine. Not as fast as my note 2. But the Note has twice the ram, processor is clocked at the same speed as the transformer and the screen resolution isn't close to the transformer.
I'm very satisfied with the speed. I don't notice any lag. And the resolution is great.
Although I have to say I don't use it as much since I got the Galaxy Note 2. (I mainly use my devices for web browsing, and the note 2 is a great size for that)
I still have some really good uses for my tablet, though. In the my cloud app it has the splashtop remote built in which is a nice bonus.

True in some cases not all users have problems with this.
The Infinity's inherent IO slowdown is built in.

As Thats OK ^^ already said, rooting will not cause you to lose warranty. You're probably confused with unlocking -- which is the opening up of your device to flashing (of custom ROMs and kernels). And as buhohitr said, rooting in itself will not do anything to alleviate any problems in themselves, except for some tweaks that lessen scrolling hiccups and such to a large degree.
Unlocking, however, is another story entirely. Although you cannot change the hardware choices ASUS made -- and they are the cause of some issues we are/were having -- you can change to a better optimized version of the stock ROM, or an AOSP/AOKP/CM10-based ROM. It will make your user experience that much better.
And something personal... (I've recently been criticized for typically being unhelpful and rude. At leats this tie, I didn't mean it that way.) Please do make sure you get to a good level of understanding regarding the Android basics of flashing/rooting/unlocking, and their differences and implications, and the same for ROMs/kernels/recoveries. The change of the 700 killing itself is probably close to nil, but with a little bit of ill-informed user intervention will do the trick.
unlocking a TF700 voids warranty. Just something to keep in mind if that's important to you. manufacturing defect (e.g. screen not properly glued) won't be covered either even though it has nothing to do with unlocking.
