[Q] HH Gregg will allow me to swap my failed Transformer for a new one.. questions

I have a transformer with a failed display (it still runs, but I can't access anything). Per ASUS' warranty instructions, HH Gregg will swap it for a new unit within 12 months. Based upon the posts I've read about the regularity with which these things crap the bed, I wish I could swap it for a different MFR..
Anyways, had a few questions:
Mine is about 40 days old, any chance the stock is better at this point?
I have a ton of personal data on there, any way to get it wiped without the ability to see the screen or have inputs? I have lastpass on it and multiple websites with my passwords cached, and the thing is synced with my gmail. I'd hate to have to reset everything.
Seems like all the tablets are currently the same exact HW. Any reasons for me to try and sell the new on on CL and get something else?
I had been fairly impressed with the thing before it crapped out, and then getting on here and reading the tons of problems people have had, I'm weary to just get the same thing again. I could always hold on to it, and return it later when there's a better tablet out there I guess.

1) What's your build number? (first 3 letters/number of your serial). Mine is B6O and its noticeably better than the B3O and B4O models I've had. Here's a good thread with real examples of build quality between the different batches.
2) Edit: didn't thoroughly read the question. Someone on here might have a solution via NV Flash? I'd recommend looking through the Dev thread. I think that would be your only method.
3) In my personal opinion, no. There are no other tablets out there that have the mixture of performance, design, and screen quality that can compare to the TF. That said, some people have had issues with all three of those and its been noticed, not only on the TF, but some other Honeycomb tablets like the Galaxy Tab.
Definitely take the opportunity to exchange it.

Correct me of i'm wrong but you can wipe by pressing both the power button and volume down for about 15ses. After that press volume up once and that's it

Oh, duh! Good point Yes you can do this method (assuming your device is not rooted with CWM). The big issue you run into though is you have no idea if it started and if it finished and no way to check. I guess the one way you could confirm that it worked is to wait a while and assume it restarted and try to unlock the device by guessing where the lock normally is. If the lock sound is enabled by default then you should hear it. Hopefully someone on here can confirm whether or not it is on by default.

I noticed a few of our local HHGregg have the latest B60 series transformers. I would always go for the latest series, but I am not yet aware of any improvements in the B60 transformer (dock is another story).
HHGregg also has discounts on transformer stuff. I got my new B60 dock for $143 USD.

If your device IS rooted, you can wipe with ADB by issuing this command
adb shell
adb format DATA
sassafras

Damn.. I already have a B5O.. this does not bode well.

[Q] Poor screen response?

I've just got back from looking at the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0" on display in the Carphone Warehouse.
Has anybody else noticed that the screen doesn't respond smoothly to pinch-to-zoom gestures in Google Maps? I tried exactly the same thing on a couple of other tablets on display - e.g. TF Prime, Galaxy Tab 7.7 and they responded exactly as I would expect. The errant behaviour I noticed was that the zoom didn't always change the way I expected it to - some gestures resulted in wildly different zoom levels than I was expecting, and it just didn't do a good job of tracking two fingers at once. (Just sweeping one finger over the screen was okay so far as I could see.)
For some reason, the stock web browser seemed to be pretty well behaved. I tried rebooting the device, but that didn't seem to make any difference. Have Samsung cheaped out on the input digitiser, or was the unit in the store faulty?
I'd appreciate any feedback - at £200 I was walking into the store ready to buy one, but my experience with Google Maps really put me off.

I would never use a store model as a performance benchmark. They are good for getting a physical feel for the device but when you have a popular device that just came out that tons of people are using, installing different (Possibly malicious) apps, and just basically abusing they tend to never perform the way they will when you actually own the device.
I will test out maps myself but I believe this device is plenty fast enough for anything you throw at it.

I don't have any issues with Google Maps on my tablet. I haven't used it that often, but I don't notice anything unusual when zooming in and out.

I made a video and went to post it to youtube but it's not letting me. Basically Maps is smooth as butter. I had no trouble zooming in and out and moving around the entire map. No lag at all.

Thank you both for your responses, it's been very helpful to get some real world opinions! I clearly need to give this tablet a second chance.
I'll report back soon once I've made a second visit to the shop...

I would definitely say at least restart the tablet before you start using it. Makes a world of difference.

It's my experience that this tablets screen is a little unresponsive. My phone has a very responsive screen as compared to the tablet and when I use the tablet with a mouse all the issues go away. I use a Logitech mouse (M110) I bought locally for under $10.00 with this tablet. When using the mouse there is no lag and unresponsiveness.
I still think this tablet is great and am very happy using it daily especially with the app "tablet talk" installed.

I have to agree. Sometimes it's perfect. Sometimes it acts like it's doing something else and too busy to respond. It seems to be most prominent in the all the different browsers I've tried. And it seems to get worse as I add more apps - though I never get past more than half-a-dozen or so before it becomes so bad that I give up and start over. I've tried to isolate it to one specific app, but it even does it in a box-stock configuration. Performing a factory reset fixes it for a time, and then it gradually starts to degrade again.
Sadly, I'm returning it.

wow never had anything close to this
I notice a stutter sometimes when I am loading the screen up from sleep with the widgets, but after that its fine and I purposely never reboot just to see how it all lasts.

Reboots seriously do help me though. My home screen will be laggy about hallway through the day but I reboot and then, its smooth.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. It almost sounds like there could be a couple of hardware versions out there. Is there any way to find out, as one does with Device Manager in Windows, what the exact hardware configuration is of an Android device? A useful app from the market?
Does ICS come with an easily accessed CPU usage monitor? It sounds like the screen response might be worse when the processor is loaded up...?
(I'm also not familiar enough with Linux to know what command lines might work, if there's no app which would show hardware configuration.)
I'm hoping to get back to the Carphone Warehouse tomorrow, and will ask the salesperson nicely if it's possible to try a new device that hasn't been put out on display...

I'm pretty sure it's bad form to keep replying to your own topic, but here goes anyway!
My plans changed at the last minute this morning and I had another chance to visit the shop. I discovered the CPU usage overlay in the developer options, and noted that when idle there didn't seem to be any gremlins sucking up all the CPU time. Maps was still a problem, and the gallery was a bit wonky too. It might just be me, but I also found precision selection (e.g. picking a hyperlink out of small text in the browser) to be a little less likely to succeed than I expected.
I wanted to speak to the staff about looking at another example of the P3110, but they were generally uninterested and I had to get back to work after hanging around for 20-30 minutes. Anyway, after looking at their returns policy, it seems like you have no rights to a return an item you buy in-store unless there is a fault which you can convince the staff about. Given their lack of interest in the problem when I brought it up on my last visit, I'm not really willing to risk that!
I'd suggest that anyone interested in buying one of these tablets does so over the phone or internet, because you then have a 14 day return period. The Carphone Warehouse terms and conditions state that if you want to return a tablet ordered online or on the phone that you must adhere to the following:
"Tablets:
* You can turn the tablet on and try it out. But you can't make any calls or send texts or emails, or add anything to its memory (such as saving numbers or taking a photo)
* The tablet must be returned in its original condition"
...So presumably, keep it clean and do a factory reset before you take it back!
For my part, I wouldn't want to buy one without a get-out clause, so I will be considering this option.
To conclude:
After this second visit, I think that many people would be fine with the device - it does respond to your inputs, it's just that under some circumstances it might take two or three goes to get the desired response. With a little patience this is not a problem at all, and considering the price point it's probably acceptable.
Unfortunately, I guess I'm not so patient as I once was - I'm too used to the way that my Galaxy S (Stock 2.3.5 ROM, XXJVT) responds to inputs, and I'd rather not take a step backwards. Ultimately, I'm now considering combining my desire to have a small ICS tablet with a mobile phone upgrade, in order to justify a Galaxy S III with its larger display (once the blue version is fixed/available).
Samsung would probably be happy with this outcome - after all, I'm now talking myself into spending £500 on one of their products instead of 'just' £200!

Intuitively, the first thing I checked. In my case, nothing obvious indicated by the built-in task manager. I even tried using the setting Developer Options -> Do not Keep Activities
I hadn't seen that before, but it didn't help.

I guess I'm in the same boat. I'm really looking for a 7-inch Droid X - without the phone.

Seems like some of us are having issues and some of us aren't, might it be a faulty hardware thing or a bad batch?

It reminds me of the first attempt by VZW/Moto at rolling out GB on for the Droid X. Some people praised it. Others cursed it. Some people got a new X2.
I was a cusser. Happily humming along now, still on FroYo.
It's true, though. Hardware continually gets revised and updated - not always for good. It could be as simple as changes in tolerances, or supplier's manufacturing processes.

I lined up my square trade and unlocked. agree 100% with OP.. this thing is a whole new beast. Not worried if something happens down the road because I lined up my warranty first. Plus needed the warranty in case something tragic like a drop or shatter happens in next couple years. Losing the manufacturer warranty really is minor to me. Not like they would cover if I accidentally shattered the screen.. of course as all post IMO.
EDIT. I just got an email from Squaretrade. I can't guarantee this for all, but the email says if you go to their Facebook today 11/1 and like it then enter your email you can get a 40% off coupon. Think about it. 2 yr protection including accident and water cost around $100 to cover a $500 product. Take 40% off that. Unlock your device and have fun. . I haven't tried since I already have. Just figured I would share for those that might be able to use it.
One more thing. sorry for the updates.. the small print in the email states that the promotion is from 11/1-11/15. If you do it you will get your code in an email on 11/16. So not instant, but still. Hope this helps someone. Hate to sound like I am selling them..

I'm sure the Nexus 10 will be a great device, but it's certainly not going to be *that* much better than the Infinity. It amazing how many people are making decisions purely based on specs...

Well, my decision is purely based on screen res. I do photography I like to enjoy my photos on a tablet with a high-res screen.
I do really enjoy iPad 3 screen, Nexus 10 one is going to be even better.
On a side note, I really hope that Samsung will provide a decent flash memory controller, so the thing flies with a stock rom.
Once CleanROM is available for Nexus 10, I will be one of the first ones to install it !

Lol seriously? lol some of you guys are hilarious. The tf700 screen is one of the best on a tablet for its size. Looking at the side by side views of the tf700 and the N10..then look EXACTLY THE SAME. Lol at this screen size condensing any more pixels is just novel. You are basically doing what apple fanboys do, see specs and swear that it will revamp your entire experience, when in actuality your just wasting your money... And like J said above, throw you tablet to someone who will make this beast even better!

Man, I would take you comment seriously if not a stuck power button in my TF700.
I had this tablet for only 1 months now and already got a physical damage.

I just got my Prime swapped out for a Infinity last week. This thing is like night and day compaired to the Prime. I haven't crashed yet (knock on wood). I'm also amazed that everything works like wifi and gps. Also a little added bonus is the Sd card doesn't stick out, so I don't have to worry about it.
Now if Gameloft and EA Games would just get off their asses and make some games compatible.

We understand that manufacturing defects are very frustrating.
I'm completely happy with the TF700T and this is after just about tossing in because of really shi**y performance.
The latest developments for this tablet are just some stunning work!
Remember those guys working out of their garage back in the late sixties building a PC prototype housed in wood.
Goes to show me the little guy still matters.
Man I'm amazed everyday at the XDA development community and the many who are eager to help the less knowledgeable.

That sucks, but ive had mine for months, use it everyday for school and for games/movies and have no physical defects. Honestly it comes down to how well you protect your tablet. If you are a person who tends to get physical damage easily, then it wont matter wether you have N10 or 700, you will eventually get damage due to your usage tendencies. Sorry man but honestly your reaching now to justify a purchase of the N10 so soon after the launch of the 700. Your never going to be satisfied if you buy products with that kind of mindset... Just my two cents

How is the BT audio streaming on CleanRom while streaming Hulu or Netflix? Is the out of sync lag still apparent or is it a lost cause due to hardware?

I'm using stock everything, but I'm perfectly happy with this tablet.
So, I have to wait 5 seconds when opening the stock browser. Which is exactly what Firefox and Chrome do on Windows, too. Used to it.
Copying files internally is a little slow. Yes. Wow. Ever tried copying 10gb of photos on Windows? ETA about 2 hours on XP, 5 hours with the ridiculous 'calculating' W7 does. Over USB it goes as fast as internally on my pc itself. Don't see the issue.
It crashes maybe once every other week. Again, I'm used to Windows.
WiFi works fine, JB actually improved it for me.
25GB MKV (Timescapes 4K) plays without any lag in MXplayer when on performance mode. 3GB MKV's work fine in balanced mode.
I haven't had any whitescreens, only the very occasional line (three times since JB update when it came out.) and not a single game lags.
Maybe it's because I'm used to WinXP, or I have more patience (haha..), or I'm just lucky, but it works fine for me. And I photoshop, Game (hardcore, not casual), watch videos, type and whatnot all day long. So it's not a lack of use, either.
I do not expect my tablet to do more than my gaming PC. It's a mobile device, not a bloody Quantum computer.

If your Windows installation crashes "every other week" there's something wrong with your installation; hardware or software. Maybe you're running Windows 98?
Windows has gotten pretty damn stable over the last few years. It's far from perfect and sure, driver issues can cause reboots, but they're usually solved with a driver update. With the TF700, you're **** out of luck until Asus decides to fix the issue. If they ever do.
If a regular app crashes the tablet running stock rom, it's Asus fault, not the app. As long as Asus is supplying the entire software and driver stack for the ROM, they're the ones to blame for instability issues. A regular app running with regular, limited privileges should not cause reboots.
(This is of course when running stock and non-rooted. If you're testing new kernel modules and it suddenly reboots you're probably to blame for that.)

Really? Manufacturing defects are, what, a conspiracy theory? These things happen, even if you're ever so careful with your gadgets. And don't tell me Asus is spotless when it comes to manufacturing quality and QA, you all know that's bull****.
Maybe the guy actually does throw his tablet around, runs his car over it and lets his dog chew on it. Fine, he's to blame. Or, just maybe, Asus did **** up? Way to go being condescending about it and blaming the person for being careless with everything he owns just because your tablet doesn't have this fault.

Actually, not really. Most of the software issues are easily fixed with a custom ROM. So, you're not *really* out of luck until Asus decides to fix the issue. It can be fixed in other ways, without waiting for Asus.
In my opinion, if you are still on the Stock ROM, you are really cheating yourself out of a great experience with the TF700. Sure, it voids your warranty, but honestly, I don't think that I've *ever* used a manufacturer warranty (and I am an electronic junkie!). Usually, if there is a hardware defect, it either occurs within the retail return period or well after the manufacturer warranty expires - at least that has been my experience.
If you are really worried about the warranty, you can get a two-year, cover-everything warranty from SquareTrade for $87. Well worth it in order to make the TF700 all that it can be... The SquareTrade warranty even has you covered if you brick the TF700 due to a bad flash or whatever.
With the TF700, I actually did purchase the SquareTrade warranty since I was a little concerned about a few things (physical button quality, etc). $87 is a small price to pay for two years of coverage, including accidental-damage coverage!

XP SP3. I game a lot. (Old games, too, hence no 7.) And ever so often, games cause reboots because of terrible scripting or lousy porting.. (Skyrim was ridiculous. It just rebooted every hour, if it even lasted that long. Took them till patch 6 to fix it... ) So does VLC when viewing blurays, because VLC hates blurays. (Common problem.)

So what you're telling me js that in order to have a lag-free, quick Infinity, I need to forfeit my warranty? Sounds like a great deal.

SquareTrade is US and UK only. Also, I'll say it again: having to give up your warranty COMPLETELY (even for issues that are clearly Asus' fault) is unreasonable in my book, especially since you're not given access to nvflash.
I have yet to unlock my device. If I'm to unlock it and void my warranty, I want a (near-)perfect device hardware-wise, which means I'll have to return this one (crap volume buttons, "clicky" display, backlight bleeding, etc). I wouldn't have needed to deal with this if Asus would still honor RMAs for hardware/manufacturing faults even when unlocked.

If Skyrim crashes your computer, it's the OS and/or drivers that are to blame. A regular application running in user mode/ring 3 should not be able to crash the entire system. That's why there are kernel and user modes: to avoid this (and security issues). Of course, buggy drivers (very common nowadays, sadly) ruins this where a game can crash the driver and cause a reboot/BSOD. Now, I'm not saying Skyrim was perfect, but in an ideal world, their bugs should not cause reboots
My previous post was a bit of a tongue-in-cheek response though, sorry about that. My point is though, that while you expect your PC setup to crash every now and then, it should not be expected of a device like the TF700. Fixed hardware, fixed software. (Again, not valid if you're running custom ROMs or kernels).

No, you don't *have* to - the TF700 actually runs OK on stock if you ask me. But, yes, if you want the TF700 to perform as well as it possibly can, then you'll need to unlock and install a custom ROM (which will void the warranty). Best bet is to get a third-part warranty. Well worth the $87, in my opinion (even less if you go for a one year warranty, I'm assuming - $87 is for a two year warranty that includes accidental damage coverage, as long as you use a coupon).
In the end, what good is a warranty on a device that you are not happy with anyway?

[Q] Convince me to unlock

I'm trying to convince myself to unlock my week old Infinity. Obviously I'm worried about the warranty, but need to know if these symptoms I'm experiencing vanish with a custom ROM.
First, and I guess this is the io problem, but the general pausing I occasionally get while browsing, will that go away? Also the slow to pop up keyboard issue? Will the overall system be snappier? Does it somehow fix the slow io?
I guess I'm just trying to figure out exactly what a custom ROM will do for me and if it's worth it for me. I did read through the stickies at the top but didn't see anything specific.

If you feel this way, do it. But why? Are you missing apps?

Why what, why do I want to unlock it? All the reasons I just outlined, it kinds a little annoying having to wait 5 seconds for the keyboard to pop up randomly, or the little stutters and halts when you browse as the page is loading. I just don't know for sure if there are ROMs out there that will take care of these for me, or if they fix the IO issue, or if that's even the culprit at all here.
I'm also running into a really annoying friggin typing issue here where it will double press keys, and when I go to backspace, it copies and pastes the word I'm trying to delete a line above where I am. I think it's only this forum, but it renders typing on the tablet here useless.

I unlocked because I was receiving the update notification for .30 and I wanted NvFlash access (which I would not be able to do after accepting the update). I now have a fully unbrickable, and fully flashable and downgradable tab. The biggest pain is that the updates don't work, but they can be downloaded from asus's website and flashed manually. Cleanrom as virtually free of the IO issue, and CM is slick all around.
Also try using an alternate keyboard such as swiftkey or hackers keyboard.

when you say free of the IO issue, have you tried transferring large files to the onboard storage (not SD)? iirc it was a hardware issue so no amount of software fix is going to fix it. IO issue != stuttering when browsing

Well, I'm pretty sure I'm going through with it, I'll probably wait a bit yet just to read up some more. I'll get the SquareTrade warranty with the 40% off coupon as soon as I figure out how to get the code just as a crutch/safety net, and I'm thinking of going with CleanROM Inheritance.

I hear what you're saying, but the SquareTrade warranties will still apply to unlocked devices, won't they? I plan on getting the 2 year from them just in case the **** hits the fan, I can get 40% off the normal price which puts it below $60. I think I read something here about them honoring the warranty even if the tablet gets bricked.
As far as the "other paths", what would they include? I rooted and froze some of the bloatware on here, I wasn't aware of anything else that could be done without unlocking. I'm used to tweaking everything computer related, I've just never done this before so if there's a thread that has a step by step with pictures so I don't go in blind that would be good. Even without the screens I'd be alright, I'll be sure to read up about it more.

You can also search the "TF201 and TF300T" vids on DD some of those procedures will be the same as the Infinity.
Other things to try would be stepping back to ICS from JB.
JellyBean has proven buggy for a number of tablet users.
Turning on GPU 2d rendering under settings.
Not using the stock browser try an alternative.
If your using the Asus keyboard try the original Android keyboard.
Use the Asus task manager to shut down recurring apps.
Turn down screen brightness.
Turn off Bluetooth.
Turn off GPS temporarily.

Thanks. I'm doing a lot of those already, I just enabled the GPU 2d rendering and my benchmark score shot way up on that front, not sure where I'll notice it in real world applications though. Why is it even disabled by default, seems like that's the way it should be from the get go.

Depends on which browser you use. In most cases, it will improve considerably, but if you use the stock browser you can achieve the same effect with some tweaking (after rooting).

As I said, you'll have to do the convincing yourself, as that is a decision I have nothing to do with. Taking a swig of my own medicine - I unlocked at the first opportunity -- I'd say that the benefits are significant.

Because a large minority of apps seem to have compatibility issues, causing them to force-close. Legacy reasons, in other words.

That was also the main motivation for me - the big decision if I want to be forever limited to what Asus provides, but with warranty and automatic upgrades, or if I want to take full control over my own tablet, with the risk of having to pay for hardware faults.
Knowing that I could not upgrade past 9.4.5.26 without either unlocking or forever losing full control over the bootloader forced me to decide. I still waited for a few weeks, then I finally unlocked, made the nvflash backups and upgraded to stock JB. After a few days I installed CleanROM. Not all lag issues went away, but I still think the experience is better than before.

Unlocking totally worth it for me
I've had my infinity for about 4 months now, I rooted a while back. I just recently unlocked and started using CleanRom Inheritance (now at version 2.5.5). I was always happy with the tablet, but had some of the issues you mentioned and after 4 months I figured what have i got to lose? (I also have a ST warranty)
★★ CleanROM 2.5.5 Inheritance | 10.4.4.20 | OC/UV Kernels | JB 4.1.1
I can tell you it's made QUITE a difference in the overall responsiveness and eliminated just about all of the stutters and pauses I thought was just a natural part of the infinity ecosystem. Check out the thread, check out the quadrant scores and see if it's something you'll find worthy of unlocking for. I'm very happy I did it. No regrets and I feel like I have a brand new tablet that performs the way it was supposed to all along.
The customizations built in to the Aroma installer alone is worth a look.

I think that it's important for you to state where you live (which continent).
Because if you live in Europe, you have nothing to fear. If you unlock your device, you cannot be held responsible for hardware (/production) issues. The repair centres will always replace anything for free the first 6 months after your purchase.
In the United States customer service will help you out as well, as long as you bought the device from a somewhat bigger and respectable store.
To be honest, unlocking the device is the best thing since sliced bread. It fixed a lot of issues and I can easily get above 6500 on Quandrant on the normal mode and I get 6900+ on performance mode.

Thanks for the replies, lots to look at and go through. I looked through some of the CROMI thread and the last few pages had me a little worried, seemed people were having troubles but I didn't go back far enough to see if that was user error or what.
Once I do this, if I make it through the process without issue does that mean I'm out of the woods in terms of danger? I mean most issues people have occur when they're trying to flash a ROM, right? So if I get through that part it's not like something debilitating is going to pop up down the road out of the blue?

If you got worried about the issues some people seem to have, just flash CleanROM 2.4 -- it won't be updated, but it was rock-stable. It seems that there is quite a bit of variability between our devices, as there have been lots of issues experienced by small numbers of users (sometimes even only one) that even Scott found hard to reproduce.
The riskiest thing you can do is flashing a bootloader -- even there, if done correctly, the risk is minimal, but at its highest point. Just flashing a ROM in itself doesn't carry that much of a risk at all -- you might end up with an OS that doesn't boot, but then you could always enter recovery, wipe date/factory reset and just flash an earlier version, or another ROM altogether. As long as you keep a working ROM .zip file handy for emergency flashing (I have one on my SGS2 that was amid-life ICS version of RootBox), you'll be able to save your bacon.
Oh... don't forget to get a good backup program *I'd suggest Titanium Backup Pro), and set a (preferably daily) schedule for the backups. That way, you won't lose more than the data modified since the last backup. That has worked out nicely for me the past few years.

Flashing a custom ROM will not make a hardware problem rear its ugly head. It would've been there before, so check for the known issues thoroughly. If OK, flash away.

Ive had my TF700 for awhile, always had it rooted but today unlocked it.
Took 10mins to get Teamwin and install liquid smooth.
I should of done this months ago, this rom let alone makes a huge difference in speed, plus the customization never ends.

If you read term and condition, Square Trade will not cover unlocked bootloader. BTW, running custom rom will eliminated ALL your issues mentioned above. Your device will be fast and smooth just like the way it should be.

Asus will not bring us KitKat

Hi guys, I am afraid I bear bad news . In a recent email exchange I had with Asus support I asked about updates to the TF700. They said the following:
ASUS has not planned a release of a firmware update for the TF700 which will revert the OS to KitKat 4 Android.
Unfortunately we have also not been advised of a release date for new firmware releases for your model. Currently we are also awaiting extra information of our R&D department on the matter.

This seems to suggest we will not get KitKat 4.4 but we may get another firmware update. This would possibly still be based on 4.2.1 with just some bug fixes specific to the TF700 or it could possibly be based on 4.3. However they don't have a release date for this yet.
I know this won't be entirely unexpected news for some people but rather a confirmation of what many of us already feared would be the case. It is indeed a shame given the TF700 is really not that old.

Good to know, Asus won't be getting my money again any time soon, looking at the Samsung note 10.1 to replace this apparently old machine

As far as I know, the R&D Department of ASUS is in Taiwan, and I highly doubt that ASUS UK has close communication with its Taiwan counterpart. Moreover, given my past experience, customer support usually doesn't have much technical knowledge to answer questions about stuff like OTA updates, bootloader unlocking, etc...
2. Comment: The way the quoted email was written is really weird. What is meant by "revert the OS to KitKat 4 Android"? "Revert to" means returning to a former state, which doesn't make sense when you talk about a future update. And what is "KitKat 4 Android"? I am sure that is not the way most people refer to Android 4.4 KitKat. And lastly, "awaiting extra information OF our R&D department" sounds odd, shouldn't it be "awaiting extra information FROM our R&D department"?
Personally, whenever I receive emails with such mistakes, I instantly question the sender's professionalism and credibility.

The initial email was sent using the form on the Asus UK support page, although I do not think the representative who responded was necessarily based in the UK. They had an Asian name and judging from the way the email was written, I think that English is probably not their first language. The reply email was not UK specific either ([email protected]). The guy could actually have been based in Taiwan for all I know.
I think this guy is probably quite reliable as he seemed fairly knowledgeable when dealing with my other queries / complaints but yes he is just a customer support rep so there is a possibility of what he said not being 100% accurate. Still, I think it is the closest to an official word on the matter that we have had so far and seems pretty plausible.

Best way to get any respect on tablet updates is to Go Nexus.
I'm just waiting for the Nexus 10 2. Which will probably release in days if not a couple months at longest.
There are plenty of 3rd party keyboards and cases for 10” tablets, such as the Nexus 10. Which make them function and even look just like our TF700T.
I used to think of the Transformer line as unique. But if you look around. You'll find there's really nothing so special to the Transformer line. Now that 3rd parties have given other tablets, especially Nexus tablets. Every feature that seemed special about the Transformer line.

I gave up on waiting on updates to 4.3 or KK - this last week I finally bit the bullet and flashed CROMI-x. Painful process in that it took days to be successful in unlocking the bootloader - literally took dozens of tries before the tool finally worked. After that, all else was straightforward. I wasn't having any particular performance issues; rather, I got fed up with the random reboots that seem to occur at least once/day. Hopefully, that will improve with CROMI-x.

USB On the Go allows for storage expansion and addresses USB. And the fact the MicroSD storage is not utilized like in the pre-Android 4.0 days, means the MicroSD storage is not well leveraged when running stock. Far as charging, if this works with the Nexus 10 2, that would put Asus behind on that one.
I'm talking keyboards, but if such things interest you like MicroSD and a battery in the dock. You may continue with it and all the issues built into the TF700T. For me, I'm going to take the Nexus 10 2 off ramp.
Edit: I want to add, _that you have helped make the TF700T a better device and I do thank you for your efforts. Even running your kernel now .

I was not having performance issues early on. But the more I used it and the more I added, I found it slowing up big time. While my loaded up phone was having no issues at all. This is when I realized the talk about the slow storage on the TF700T is a big problem. That's when I moved to CROMI-x. It is better than stock, but the storage issue can only best be overcome by using ROM2SD with CROMI-x. (You need a very fast MicroSD.) That does help the most, but still, it's all patches around a big issue. And a tablet that has things right to begin with would run better.

And the fact the MicroSD storage is not utilized like in the pre-Android 4.0 days, means the MicroSD storage is not well leveraged when running stock. Far as charging, if this works with the Nexus 10 2, that would put Asus behind on that one.
I'm talking keyboards, but if such things interest you like MicroSD and a battery in the dock. You may continue with it and all the issues built into the TF700T. For me, I'm going to take the Nexus 10 2 off ramp.
I was not having performance issues early on. But the more I used it and the more I added, I found it slowing up big time. While my loaded up phone was having no issues at all. This is when I realized the talk about the slow storage on the TF700T is a big problem. That's when I moved to CROMI-x. It is better than stock, but the storage issue can only best be overcome by using ROM2SD with CROMI-x. (You need a very fast MicroSD.) That does help the most, but still, it's all patches around a big issue. And a tablet that has things right to begin with would run better.

I've had mine over a year and never ran into any real performance problems. While never as snappy as my 2012 & 2013 Nexus 7's or Galaxy S3, it was much better than my Xoom - I didn't see the severe issues that others have. But the random reboots (most occurred when just "idling", not during app use) were just maddening and made the tablet undependable in my mind. I haven't noticed any performance differences with CROMI-x yet but I'm really hoping that it is now more stable.

Tell me I'm wrong...isn't the Nexus made by Asus? Or am I thinking that just cause I'm old and senile?

The 7 inch Nexus are made by Asus and the 10 inch was made by Samsung.

I tried messaging Gary but I did not have high hopes as the account is dead for so long.
Does anyone know a new contact? Maybe they could say something more reliable about update policy regarding the TF700...

And a hinge. Mine stays docked almost all the time. I get clamshell protection and a handy portable package. Once you start trying to replicate the other features using accessories with other tabs, you get a bulky mess of stuff that you couldn't pay me to carry around.
Not that I'm exactly loving Asus these days, but the transformer certainly was special when I got it.

I totally agree with you. That is the main reason why I still hold on to the TF700 and not get the new Padfone Infinity ( the new Padfone has a Snapdragon 800, 1080p screen, fast internal storage, microSD support with performance that obliterates almost everything else). The only thing holding me back is the keyboard dock, without which the tablet experience is simply incomplete (in my opinion of course). If ASUS manages to bring the dock to the next Padfone and achieve decent size and weight, I will gladly make ASUS my go-to brand for all computing needs.

I have kitkat on my phone, it's pretty nice so far.
So... Anyone else shopping around for an upgrade this holiday season? I was looking at the tf701, but If it's going to have the same lack of development (I truly appreciate the hard work our few, but amazing, devs have put in), then I'd rather go for one of the new waterproof xperias or a galaxy tab. Haven't really looked into the various options yet.. I was excited when we got cm, and especially a pac-rom port, but every time I gave them a try, they just seemed a bit off. Like they were unfinished and obviously made for a phone. Maybe cromi just spoiled me. :shrug:
This tablet has been good to me, though. I got a micro-hdmi to hdmi cable, so maybe I'll use it as a media hub or something... If the native Linux on our device had more development behind it, and was just a tad more stable and compatible, I wouldn't really be looking into a replacement. Definitely not planning on getting rid of it. If I can find the time maybe I'll use it to delve deeper into learning how to develop myself.

I can't imagine a vendor ever matching the features and capabilities the ROM development community adds. I like that Asus offers a way to unlock the bootloader. Samsung would rather that you don't. In the year I've had this, there have been multiple firmware releases. For a minute, cromi was changing every other day. There is a new device they have to sell now. I'm happy. 5.2.2, btw is amazing! well I was hoping for Kit Kat too... seeing as its optimized for lower RAM devices I was thinking it would really help out stock. Its definitely time to flash now. My only question is if anyone knows if they're working on a Kit Kat version of CROMi???
