I have a Inspire I just recently picked up from a friend, and was wanting some expertise in how to root, and what not. I noticed in the forums aahk is not longer supported. Is the easy ace root tool supported then.. I kind of new to htc phones, but I know a good bit about flashing and what not. If I could have a little guidance, much thanks will be given.
Thanks,
Tank

The key here is to search.
While you are new to HTC, you are also new to XDA. Please read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?a=81
There are countless posts in this section that offer great information for what you need to know. There are also countless YT vids that will help you through this process.
I understand and all, but everything read is not relevant to within the last month or so.. Everything is older, as I was just looking for some help on what would be the most relevant and smoothest today. I've done some reading, and it appears the ace hack kit is the most recent. But I have noticed others have problems with it at the same time and was just looking for guidance..
Thanks, though

I would suggest posting in one of these threads, to determine what others did to remidy the issues.
Here are 2 YT vids that may help~

I've been browsing the xda-devs forum and been Googling quite a lot about rooting, and recently just took the plunge to root my Wildfire with Unrevoked.
Now that I've rooted, what can I do next? I've been through quite a bit, and I don't see any topic that lists out some examples for us root newbs to get started with.
I've been playing with Apple devices quite a lot, and I have the first gen iPod Touch which I have been active in jailbreaking and modding, but semi-retired ever since I got my HTC.
Would appreciate guidance from fellow forum members. Thanks. A list of things we can do with a rooted phone and guides on how to do it would be awesome.
First on behalf on everybody on XDA let me give u a big welcome . As to your question, there is a lot you can do with your newly rooted phone. You can find all you need here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=678 Hope you will find this link very handy.
PS: I used to have an iphone 3g also, i jail break it and unlocked it. But now i have a HD2 running android.

Thanks for the prompt reply mate. I've skimmed through those forums, but I can see that most of the topics are questions about this and that instead of 'guide' forums... so I thought it'd do us all good if somebody compiled a list of things we could do after our phone is rooted.
Sounds nifty, no?
Ok, So I got my new inspire 4g. I just wanted your guys' advice on rooting. Since its so new, and seems to be kindy buggy; would you guys recommend that I wait a little bit longer until there are more rooting options? (IE: one click root, more stable roms, no sound issues, etc)
I have the know how to root my device with the hack kit, but I would really like someone else's opinion.
Thanks in advanced guys. I am new to this forum but I have a lot of experience in rom-engineering(Worked on the EVOX team back on the original xbox) and application development. I completely believe in open source code and I am looking forward to contributing to the forum!

attn1's hack kit works very well (see the pinned topic) - just follow the steps, and if you have issues, they are extremely helpful in the forum. It may seem daunting at first, but it's really not that difficult.
if you use attn1s hack kit and follow the steps in the readme, you should be just fine.
also, this should probably be in general, not development.
Thanks for the advice guys.
Also: didnt notice I was in the development forum, meant to post in general.
Ok im off to get started!
Hello all, I'm trying to update my phone and get some new firmware on it, but I'm very basic when it comes to updating my phone, and I don't want to ruin it in anyway. I have a friend who constantly updates his, and I would like to get mine out of the stone age.
My current phone is the Samsung Galaxy S (SAMSUN-SGH-I896) on Rogers in Canada. The firmware I'm running is 2.1, but I can't seem to update it from my phone in anyway.
Is there a way that I can update my firmware easily? Or can someone point me in the right direction, because everything on these forums looks like french to me.
Thanks in advance.

Get Kies mini from Samsung. You will be able to update to 2.2 from there.
Please spend a little time searching, reading the stickies and looking around before starting new threads. What you asked is the heart of this forum and investing a little of your time looking for info that's already here rather than expecting personalized service is appreciated.

The heart of this forum is helping others and modding our phones. It sounds like all he wants to do is update to 2.2. no need to berate him for asking a question and in no way answering it.
to answer the question what the first poster said. Use Kies mini
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
These are very explicit and easy to follow instructions for updating to Froyo(Android 2.2) using Kies. Although the tutorial is for the AT&T version, all steps are the same. If you follow them to the 'T', you should have Froyo on your phone in less than an hour. Good Luck!
Is 2.2 the most up to date version I can get?
Officially released. Yes.
Much appreciated, I work on Macs at work, so I'll have to give this a shot when I get home. Thanks for the help, if anything goes wrong, I'm sure I'll be back on here with questions!

If it does go bad, be back on here searching, not asking questions or starting new threads. While we are here to help, it is annoying to come in asking for help with the same problems that have alrewady beenh solved dozens of times and can be found by doing a search. Nobody in here is paid to be here, so helping yourself is always appreciated. Of course, if you are really stuck, then ask, but it is always better to post to an existing related thread than to start a new one.
Hi, sorry if this a completely noobish question but im really new to this site and anything to do with rooting so bear with me
Basically I want to upgrade to the sense 3.0 through rooting because the network im on (three) are taking the absolute piss with updating it over the air.
I'm just going through the process of turning my phone S-off and i'm about to root it. i was just wondering how often bricking occurs. I not really fussed about overclocking my cpu of my phone. so basically i was just wondering if there was any possibility my phone could get bricked just from updating to sense 3.0 with the ruu. Again sorry if this question is ridiculous but i really have no idea!
Thanks in advance!!

The question kind of takes care of the answer, buddy...
The probability of your phone getting bricked is inversely proportional to the time you spend reading the threads on Guides, FAQs on this site.
Other than that mathematical certainty, there are no published statistics on actual percentage of people who brick their phones while playing around. Doesn't happen to so many, despite them flashing ROMs and MODs many times, EVERYDAY, while some poor souls end up dead on their first attempt.
Precautions??
1. Read the Guides and FAQs thoroughly. Nodefect maintains an excellent data bank over at the general thread. Then when you think you've understood it all, read some more.
2. Read a little more.
3. Use the search function on xda. Hogwarts stuff, this one..!! Its plain lame when people post that they used the search tool but couldnt find a topic... its powered by google for f***'s sake. If its there on xda, search WILL find it for you.
4. DO NOT PULL BATTERY. Find out more about this before you even contemplate moving forward.
5. Finally, if you do happen to get stuck, post a new thread with a clearly worded topic in the correct section.... Desire Q&A.
Don't worry, I may sound a little gruff to you but we are probably the most civil bunch of people over at xda, the desire s gang. You will receive the best help you can imagine. Hell, even i started out here as a panicked noob, screaming for help when my phone got semi-bricked. It's safe and sound now, in case you were wondering, again thanks to the community.
And finally, Welcome to the 'hood.
If its just Sense 3.0 / GB 2.3.5 you want, then creating a goldcard and running the RUU would probably be easier and safer than S-Off/rooting.
Rooting is not really risky, as long as you know what you're doing. EVERYTHING is tested (A LOT) before it is released to the public, so it's pretty much noob-proof.
There is always risk involved, but no one can tell you how much. You can compare devices on how likely you are to brick them, mostly manufacturers (Apple < Samsung < HTC) but no one can pinpoint a percentage.
The risk is worth the reward, i would even say it's too low, considering the awesomeness you get. I would advice you to go for it, just don't pull the battery, EVER. Also, don't download multiple apps at once from market. You should be fine.

I help A LOT of people here on xda all day everyday some donate some don't. its very hard to help people on xda cus when helping them other people jump in and start either telling the person im helping don't do that do this or they just plain old spam. i have helped a very large amount of people on g talk and they have told me they like to be helped MORE on g talk than on xda because we have 100% full privacy to do what we need to do. please choose how you like to be helped Either xda or PM or g talk. at the end of the week ill count all of them up and from the results i will help people based on the results on this thanks very much.
To put the poll into better context I believe that you should also read this thread Although I've quoted the relevant posts below:

Hello, Paul,
Firstly, thanks (again) for your input into the forum. I'm genuinely not intending to create conflict here or trying to play the role of a mod. Now, I know that you've had this sort of comment before, but, I agreed with it then and I'm afraid that I still do.
While at times the PM route can be useful to resolve issues, it shouldn't be the only or primary option. The whole principle of XDA is openness and sharing, so resolving an issue in thread permits that the next user(s) (and there is always another, who suffers from the exact same problem) from hopefully using the Search function and then following the resolution from the thread by themselves.
That way we're working towards creating a valuable resource rather than loosing useful input into hidden PMs.
PM's do have there place for 'user to user' communication, that would otherwise populate the forum unnecessarily but once a thread has been created I believe that it should be used to reolve the original issue.
If a new user needs that much hand holding then one wonders whether they should be risking their £200-£400 device in the first place! before reading up some more....

me helping people over PM is better because its faster and more safer for the person im helping. if im trying to guide him then other people jump in and comment he isnt going to know who to listen to and he will get very confused. this has happend before. by helping over PM or my gmail is better for them, and me. and i ALWAYS ask them after to write a guide as to how i helped them and what they did. i at NO point mean to upset anyone. but you have got to understand that this is the only way that i can help these people as you may well know here on xda people have got there opinions and they like to jump in whenever they want. if i tell him to do somthing some1 might jump in and say no or do this and do that. i have had EVERYONE i have helped say thanks to me and its better this way. i have helped MANY people achieve proper s-off. i will no open a poll. and it will ask the people of xda if they would prefer to be helped via PM or Gtalk or on here. if more people prefer xda then i will start helping via xda

As someone whom Paul has helped through gtalk, It was very beneficial to me as we were able to quickly and easily communicate, as any other method is rather slow and crude. I definitely do agree with your point on xda being a repository for information however, therefore communicating through gtalk or similar could withhold information from other users. However I have now written up a short guide of what I did to solve my problem on the original thread, and I believe that if people do this then everyone wins tbh, and it has the added advantage of the treads being shorter and more concise, therefore it is easier to find the relevant information.
As someone who has done all his stiff by reading through threads and others opinions, I will always advocate all discussions on XDA
Sent from a Desire S waiting for Kernel 3. WAKE UP HTC!!!!
On the 16th the poll will close and whatever the winning method is thats the way i will help people from now on. i do wish ALL people will take something out of the way i help them. as me getting them properly s-off uses alot of things like commands running adb , fastboot and so on. by helping them do these things it then in turn helps them. as if i didnt help them and they needed to to adb or fastboot commands and they never knew howto that could result in a not needed thread being opened **How to use adb or fastboot** this is a good way for me to help these people. i think people should help people the way they do and let other people carry on with the ways they do things. ( no offence meant ben your opinion means alot to me your a good person ) but if it states in the rules ( only help people on xda ) then i will stop if it dont then i will carry on as im not doing anything wrong. and even so if you guys think your losing out on infomation. i will open up a guide covering absolutly EVERYTHING on the desire s from fastboot adb changing roms, splash, radio, hboot and covering everything on what the desire s is capable of doing. what limits it has and other things. this in a sense will be the desire s XDA user guide let me know if u think thats a good isea ben. and as i go along anything i help people out with thats not in the new guide ill just update it ????????????

I do but there are already several threads like this, so one must be careful not to pollute the forum with too many similar guides which would just lead to further confusion.
There is the Complete Tutorial for beginners and others, but I'm guessing yours would be a more technical and slightly more advanced version?

The one thing I would say though, is rather than re-invent not just the wheel but the car, I'd recommend that you source, link and reference as much of the existing documentation where ever possible.
