first off i have the HTC wildfire and i put gingerbread onto it, and as soon as i got it on everything worked except that google play wasn't there so i downloaded the .apk of the web but when i click of the app, it opens but it comes up with a box saying
"you must add an account to the device to continue. do you want to add one now?"
and no matter what i click on whether it is yes or no, the application just closes.
any ideas as to what i could do
have you tried deleting data and cache of the play store app? maybe that's all you need to do. afaik there's also another system app that's connected to the play store and which could help if you delete data and cache of it.

thank you
Something like this happened to my N7. What I did to fix the problem was go into Settings > Accounts & Sync: Then remove your account, (1*) reboot, then add your Google account with the Accounts & Sync Page.
1*
It might be worth it to wipe the Google play data after you remove your account.
Also, I think that raShMan777 was referring to both Google Play Services, and Google Services Framework. You should try and wipe there data as well.

What gapps baked into the rom that you installed? Make sure that you have the right version. If all else fails, download and reflash gapps before you wipe and reflash the entire rom.

I resolved the problem on my cell by deleting the Play Store's app data with Titanium Backup.
So there are multiple threads on this but I don't see one specific to the Verizon S3.
I recently tried to make the move to a new rom. I have tried both synergy and beans14. On both of them I run into this error and my contacts will not sync with google. I have tried to clear data in contacts and contacts storage with no success. I even tried do a factory reset back to a new rooted stock image using the guide found in section 6 of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709
From there i did another factory reset, complete cache wipes. I think flashed a recovery and tried installing the Beans14 rom again, and the issue is STILL THERE. I tried Beans because there was some talk that backup assistant could be the root of the issue and i beans does not contain this app...
Any idea what the hell is going on? I
If i revert back to my backup before trying to flash these roms I do not have the issue.

Yes the phone itself, try going into settings->application manager->running application->contacts then select "clear cache option" if you see contacts storage under running application clear the cache for that as well. If that doesn't work backup your contacts first and then under the two applications I just mentioned select the "clear data" option. If that still doesn't fix your problems try running the fix permissions utility found in ROM manager. Let me know if you need more help

I have tried all this to no avail. I have also tried fixing permissions within recovery
This issue usually shows up when there is an issue with your contacts. Do you have any apps that can affect your contacts? Mr. Number is one that comes to mind that when it is restored to the phone, can cause the error to show.
You can try to back up your contacts to the sd card. Delete your contacts from the phone, and confirm delete from Google. Then after a wipe, if it tries, do not restore from Google, import from the sd card. Before restoring apps, make sure you don't see the error anymore when opening the contact list. Then restore apps. If it happens again, pay special attention to what apps were restored to find any potential trouble makers.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. I tried to see if this would be an issue with CleanROM as well. Something went terribly wrong flashing that, and now i have a hard bricked phone. So it will be some days before I can even see if this works...
I just rooted my phone from Jelly Bean 4.1 and am running the latest stable CM10 rom out. I also installed gapps, but wasn't sure if I had installed the right version. When I try to open the Google Play store, I get an error that says "Error retrieving information from sever. [RH-01]". My Wi fi and 4G are both on. I can access internet via stock browser. Also, when I try to search something it tells me that Gmail has stopped working.
same thing here, after i installed lots of apps to my microsd's 2nd partition using link2sd, i got all apps except system apps disappeared from 'My apps' at google play store though i could still see them as 'installed' when i search their names at google play store
i used link2sd to link around 900 mb of lib, dex and apk files, my second partition is ext 3, im using jellyblastv3 with kuro kernel that supports up to ext 4 my microsd is 16 gb and partition is around 1024 ~ 1078 mb
This didn't happen to me before, well im not used to link this lot of files but you know galaxy y has 195 mb internal storage and dalvik cache takes most of it and the apps that use app2sd method still take some space from internal so i also linked them.
The methods i tried :
Fixing using titanium backup market doc (after a cache, data cleaning of app store)
Tried to mess with link2sd, tried everything except 'relink all' but the problem is not about link2sd, all my apps are working fine
Deleting play store cache & deleting google framework cache and data, THAT led me to this error, while i was trying to get the other apps to show up in my apps list things gone worse.
I couldn't find any solutions on the internet for link2sd, been googling this for last 3 days, i'd appreciate any help
I've had the same issue. Erasing cache doesn't help, removing Google account doesn't help, reflashing doesn't help. I had to restore a backup to get the play store back.
I had the same issue with my phone, whenever I factory reset my phone I get that error. I had to flash through Odin, to another stock ROM and then go from there. Was never able to get around it or figure out why it wouldn't work.

Fixed but still got problems
My error was caused coz i messed up with 'google framework' at gemini app manager too much, it changes app auto runs and i didn't know anything about google framework back then, i re-enabled some autoruns and its fine now, you could also try that app, its free on google app store
BUT i still couldn't find a solution to this :
I have got total of 210 ~ 216 apps installed on my phone including system apps, theres only like 16 showing up on the market (which i reinstalled or newly installed them recently from google play store) the rest aren't displayed at 'my apps' page, but i can still see them as 'installed' when i go to their download pages.STILL i can't update them, while appbrain market tells me they are outdated (its expected as i didn't update any programs due to this problem for last 2 weeks) google play store just shows 'Open, uninstall' options at app's download page
Is there any ways to fix this without losing all my apps data? I tried reinstalling from old backups but no luck, i don't wanna lose my apps data and i don't know how to backup my data without apks included
Bump.
Anyone else figured out any fixes. This seems to be affecting several people.
Go to apps- all google play store, clear cache, data and disable. Then google services framework clear cache and data and force stop. Reboot. Should get a notification for updates and go back into apps- all scroll to the bottom and enable play store. This has worked for me the last few times I got this error.
By the way I solved the problem by flashing the correct gapps for 4.1
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
fix for my error
****EDIT**** : Can only get apps installed from google play store work, the rest (like installed from sd card) won't get linked to play store
looks like i found the fix, reinstall every single app (got 216 atm ) with their orginal APK without using titanium. It seems like titanium had problems while backing my apks up, perhaps its something about titanium failing to sync my data (i usually do full backups with data so this shouldn't happen) Devs should really create some apps - scripts to fix this kind of sync problems, i found only one app @ xda so far, but it scans the google play store database, not all of the databases on the phone, even if i point my ext as database it won't work, its so annoying how i gotta reinstall my whole 216 apps, probably gonna take one day cause i don't have backups of all my apks, only big ones (such as games).
if you don't wanna get same errors as i did :
use the default play store
NEVER use nandroid advanced restore unless you know what your doing
make sure titanium backup works well
always backup your data before flashing anything that has something to do with your system (such as roms, scripts)
NEVER use autorun managers on system apps (last time i disabled some autoruns about sms service, it took 1 - 2 days for my msgs to appear at my friends' phones.)

what is the right gapps?
Another problem...
seems like most of the apps that i install from my SD don't get linked to google play store, they aren't even in the database, only apps that are installed from google store got their links correctly, someone help please
NOTE : i also get 'error retrieving info from server, RPC:s-5:AEC-0 if i wipe dalvik cache via CWM
IMPORTANT UPDATE : It seems like my apps divided into 2 different adroid IDs, probably cause titanium wasn't able to detect my new ID,
Any suggestions about syncing my android apps' IDs without having to reinstall them?

Hello, at the store, the sales did not give me a chance to enter some information (I recall something like machine name, user name, etc). He just pressed skip or next several times to make the machine operable. Should I somehow reset the machine to pre-box opened state or enter the information under settings? I don't know if the system automatically created a default user folder, etc. Thanks.

For your information, under General->Users, I have: You (Owner)
Am I supposed to change this to my name or create another user account?
If I don't do a factory reset, what else should I change?

If you don't do reset, change it if you want.
When you first time boot your tablet (or after factory reset) it asks you those Samsung / Google accounts and what ever it asks..
Now you have to manually set those accounts since they're skipped for first time. I think you can also use your device without setting those, but it might be somehow limited (Google play and Samsung store etc. If those accounts are not added to device).
OK. I did a factory reset. After that, I went to PlayStore. under All, I see all the apps that I had installed or currently installed on my Note 2. Do I have to manually select and install the apps that I also want to be on the PRO? Due to the write sdcard issue with KK, shall I buy a sdcard first before installing the apps? thanks
Yes if you did not select during setup to backup and restore your device on the cloud then you will have to manually install everything one by one. Another way to do it if you want to duplicate what you have on another android device is to use an application like App List Backup to backup a list of installed applications. You then copy the backup list file that the application stores on your device to your new device and use the application to assist you in installing what you want as a batch operation.
You can add the SD card later and if the applications need the SD card later they'll use it. Unless of course your'e the type to want to push applications to run on SD card . .

the google and gmail apps are used for authenticating the user. remove those apps and you remove the OS's ability to recognize a user. from there, it will just crash because it basically doesnt know what to do with the holes in the code created by removing those apps

is that a question or statement?
if it is a question, i would advise not uninstalling anything that is included in your phone and google related for the most part. Of course you can remove hangouts, calendar, calculator, gallery blah blah blah, but its never a good idea to uninstall the email application that google uses for authentication on the phone itself.
from what you listed, if any one thing in that list caused your issue, its removing gmail

factory reset. also, delete the folder on the internal storage called "android". That folder contains app information and isnt formatted during a flash via TWRP or even in Odin. Itll cause app crashes left and right. Delete the folder from within the file manager in TWRP, reboot to download mode, flash whatever firmware youre wanting on it via Odin, let it boot, reboot to stock recovery, factory reset (at least once. i always do it 3 times, and no, im not kidding), reboot and it should be fine from there. The problem youre facing has been experienced by countless people over the years and phones. Ive seen issues VERY similar to this over the last 8+ years, and this is always the easiest fix for it
