Radio question - HTC Sensation

Hey all, I'm new to this device. I received it with S-off already, 4ext recovery, running CM 10.1 4.1.2 kernel compiled by bruce it appears.
I wanna check out PAC 4.2.2 rom , but I saw some posts around here about certain ROMs working better with certain radios (which sounds strange).
Current radios
11.69.3504.00u
11.22.3504.07m
On T-mo.
Should I be good?
Much thanks.

if your device works well with PAC 4.2.2 rom there is no nned to change radio
check it and see how it goes
if you want to change radio use getril app from playstore
it will show you the best combination of radio/ril

Hi, it's good to check this thread about our device radios, RILs and their combinations: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202867

Thank you both. I had skimmed a bit thru that thread. It seems the radios I have are way old, and the ROM/kernel that were last flashed on this are from DEC 2012. But, as stated, it is CM 10.1, which all others are based off, so I'm probably good.
Thanks.

Radio flashing

I'm am running leedroid 3.1.2 with the recommended radio but my signal is up and down. So my question is do I need to flash is again. I flashed it when I first installed leedroid 3.0.1. Also has anyone noticed any lag with 3.1.2 mine seems to have a lot compared to 3.0.3. Any suggestions would be great

Unfortunately, a Radio may not work as well for one person as it does for another. For the most part, it's going to be location based. The recommended radio is just something that works well for the Dev, based on their location. You can always try a different radio, but your results will vary. And in some cases, you may not even see a difference at all. Worst case scenario, you can always go back.
Thank you. I was just reading about ril files didn't know if I needed to look into that as well? Any ideas?

The way I understand RILs (and I could be wrong) is that they are basically drivers. If that's the case, using the wrong RIL would be like just using whatever HP driver for your HP printer. It's a crapshoot as to whether it'll work, and it might not work well if it does.
Well I went ahead and flashed the latest ota radio and ril files I'm gonna give it a try got the highest speed test so far 4.0 down and 3.0 mps up. Thanks for the input!

If you haven't already, there's a new radio thread by tribalartgod in the dev section that you should keep an eye on, as well as the "radio without eng s-Off" thread by shadowfox. There's also the RIL thread and original radio thread, both over in the desire hd section.

[Q] CM9 nighty and CM10 ??

I've noticed on the CM website there are nighty builds for CM9 being released relatively frequently. My question is that are these more advance than the stable CM9 releases? Or are they beta builds for CM10? If so, why aren't they labelled CM10?
That's because there not cm10. They haven't even started to release one build so they won't be.
Nightlies are more stable then the stable build
Your so called stable build is just a label. It's just another nightly
Sent from my Sensation using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for the response. Why do u think they are just labels rather than proper stable releases?
Is there a change log anywhere so u can see what new features have been added or fixed?

Fair enough.
I think I will just go ahead and update to the latest version of CM9 then in the hope that battery life improves.

Why don't you just use one of the custom cm9 roms there better
Sent from my Sensation using Tapatalk 2
Two reasons I think. Both of which make me sound like a wimp by the way.
I don't want to venture away too much from aosp and I don't have the technical knowledge to see what the main differences are with the variations.
Also because I've only installed two roms, both have been CM ones and I'm too cautious to try something new!

There's like nothing wrong in trying in the other roms. If something is wrong with them then just restore your backup
Sent from my Sensation using Tapatalk 2
True. I just don't like having to install all apps again etc. Plus all of my apps are installed on my SD card (the ones that allow anyway) so I hate having to format my SD card to get rid of all unnecessary stuff (I'm ocd about that!).
I will start being more experimental I think though. Its the only way forward!

ROM Toolbox Pro or Titanium Backup works pretty well in restoring non-system apps across ROM changes but not sure how it handles apps moved to SD card.
If you restore ROM from nandroid backup, it will be like nothing has really changed. It's worth trying different ROM's given different optimized ROM's and even different kernels are out there. Or Bruce CM10 which is pretty awesome.
I've heard nothing but good things about Bruce's ROM so I think I may head over there. One of the things stopping me is that there are so many updates being released for it all of the time I feel I should keep waiting!
Thanks for all of the advice guys.

Updates are awesome. I could hardly notice difference between updates but I like keeping my phone updated.
Best thing you can just flash new update on top of whatever you have no need to wipe even cache. Totally effortless.
If it fails, flash previous ROM.
I wasn't aware it was that easy. Thanks for the information. When I get time I am definitely gonna give it a go.

I have one more question please.
So if I want to update my current version of CM9, which is the most recent stable version, to the last version released, which is a nightly build - do I have to wipe everything (phone, cache etc) or do I just flash the rom and that's it?
Many thanks once more.

Wipe Dalvik and Cache only, then install. (You might not even have to do that, but I don't know if the CM9 install scripts wipe those for you.)
When it boots everything will be just like you left it.
That's ONLY if you are upgrading to the newest Cm9 build.
If you want to go to any CM10 builds do a full wipe first.
If everything is going to be as I left it (apps, settings etc) I will try the latest cm9 before I try cm10.
Many thanks.

Though all the features are working on his build now, if there are small bugs that may or may not happen then it's not completely a release candidate yet

I'd check your APN settings. As for the guy above you, it sounds like he is complaining about the normal stock radio performance. For some reason, HTC seems to think it's OK for the signal indicator to bounce around like crazy...Try making a backup and flashing another ROM like CM10 and you'll probably see it go away.

Ahh dude the whole reason I'm in this dilemma is because I wanted the ota update and wanted to stick to stock roms for the time being. Isn't there a way to flash a radio on stock roms? Btw this happened because I super cid my phone.

I'm on 1.06es I think, my signal isn't desperately bad, but a phone like this should be better. Other people report the new ota update solving the H / 3g switching thing, but not for me.

Weak WiFi on jb ROMs?

I have been trying out a few ROMs and it seems the WiFi on the jelly bean ROMs are weak compared to ICS roms. Has anyone had this problem.

I've used Bruce's CM10 builds and recently switching to the official Cyanogen CM10 builds. Last week I tried out Nikez's JB 4.2 AOSP build. I had great wifi on all of them. Like satndin gout in my front yard with the wifi router in the basement in the back of my house good. So it's not the ROM itself. (Though it could be a combination of the ROM and some app or mod you're running)
You might have a weak connection on the wifi anteneas inside the back case of the phone. Take the back cover off, look at the gold pins on the phone, and make sure they are all raised up. You can take a tiny screw driver and pry them up a little more to make sure they are getting good contact with the back cover (which is the antenea). Juts be VERY careful when doing it.
It might not help, but it's a cheap thing to try.
I have tried that too but its strange I can switch to a ICS ROM and I will have full bars in my whole house but with the jelly bean ROMs its one or two bars unless I'm right next to it.

I've got some WiFi tweaks in my kernel that might help. My kernel, Sultan, has the WiFi voltage increased to the max and it has some WiFi signal parameters altered at the kernel level so WiFi networks with weaker signal can be seen. If my kernel doesn't really help then I can build a kernel just for you that forces the system to use the BCM4329 WiFi driver instead of the BCMDHD WiFi driver; that may help. BTW, if you download my kernel then make sure you download the one for Jelly Bean and not the one for Sense.
I tried your kernel and my WiFi is still weak compared to ICS but does seem a little stronger
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda app-developers app
This is a confirmed issue, its not kernel related, because even with the kernels with improved wifi voltage (which is more voltage than stock), its still a weaker signal than on an ICS based rom.

Is it an issue with proprietary drivers/code or a issue with JB itself?
I tried two different ones but both the same still weak WiFi ... I am new to HTC so I might not be wiping something right but anyways what kind of recovery should I use and what should be wiped every time I flash a new ROM

most users who are S-ON(like me) 4ext has a feature which calls smartflash
before flashing any rom you have to enable smartflash before flashing(if you are S-ON)
and then flash the rom
for S-ON devices it is one way to boot a rom after installation
if you are S-OFF you don't need that feature
So if I'm s off then ext4 isn't really a must have for me

4ext was really buggy for me. 1 of the many bugs I experienced with 4ext was that sometimes after flashing a kernel the phone would get stuck at the HTC screen and I would have t use fastboot to flash a boot.img file in order to get my phone to boot; flashing another kernel in the recovery didn't work and it would still be stuck at the HTC screen -_- If you have S-OFF then use TWRP. Just my 2 cents.

help... baseband UNKNOWN.. CM10

Hi, I hate to say this but PLEASE HELP ... lol... been saving that one for a while.
I have a S2 Skyrocket LTE the Canadian rogers version, I have been running great on JB CM10 for months now, and all of a sudden once in a while, or often I should say the phone says "NO SIM CARD" so if i restart a few times, battery pull, it will most times come back and I can use my phone fine for a bit.. than boom.. it does it again..
I noticed in the about section it says Baseband UNKNOW so i did a hour of research and can't find a solution, I am confused why this could happen.. if anyone could help me out i would love you.
Flash the radio again. Try one of the newer ones.

can you tell me where to get a radio, and how to flash the radio ?
I have my phone rooted and unlocked to put in cm jelly bean for skyrocket.. I used another PC i think odin or somthing i used.. it was a challange.
Can i flash a radio in recover mode CWR mode.. or do i need a pc and stuff to do it ?
thanks
Try mohans ucmc1. Find it in the development forum. Flash it in your custom recovery.

So this "radio" you link to, is it giong to work for Rogers in Canada still and allow my phone to be used internationaly with other sims still ?
I know i have a "custom recovery" as I remember something about that, I don't know what it is, i know how to boot up in recovery mode.. I think that is what you mean, and then i just find the file you point to and instal it that way ?
Will this change only the radio and not all my data and system changed on the phone ?
THANK YOU SO MUCH>>
It'll only change the radio. Won't affect anything else.
